The Osceola Chamber’s President/CEO John Newstreet named “Chamber Executive of the Year”

Business Works Better Together… that’s the mission statement of The Osceola Chamber, and given the challenges over the last few years, that should bring solace to those in the business community. Businesses and organizations in Osceola County don’t have to go at alone with one of the best chambers in the state right in Kissimmee.

At the recent Florida Association of Chamber Professionals Annual Awards Luncheon, held this year in Ocala, The Osceola Chamber President/CEO John Newstreet was named the 2022 Chamber Executive of the Year for the state of Florida. Following an extensive application process, which included assessment of the chamber’s membership recruitment and retention, communications, and volunteer management, Mr. Newstreet was chosen by a group of fellow Chamber CEOs from around Florida.

“This award is most humbling,” said Newstreet, “My fellow Chamber executives are all high caliber individuals who selflessly work for the betterment of their members and communities, but no executive can do it alone. I am blessed to have a tremendous team dedicated to excellence and helping others, and I am fortunate to have incredible support from my volunteer leaders and private partners who guide us and enable us to reach farther and higher than we ever thought wise or possible. Thank you to Cindy Lewis, my ‘right hand,’ who makes me look good and keeps it all together. And thank you to my team for nominating me, and for your dedication to our common purpose to be ‘Champions for Business and the Osceola community.’”

The Osceola Chamber was named the FACP Chamber of the Year in 2021, 2017, and 2001. Chamber Executive Vice President Cindy Lewis and Senior Director of Business Development Robin Hughes have also previously won Chamber Professional of the Year in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

INJURY LAW

Draper Law:

minor

Car accidents can happen in an instant. Even though these crashes happen quickly, recovery is not always quick and easy. A car accident can cause a variety of injuries, including back injuries. Even a minor crash can cause back injuries because the back tends to absorb most of the impact in an accident.

If you have suffered a back injury, seek prompt medical treatment. These injuries can be hard to treat, and sometimes can lead to secondary medical issues, such as hypotension, osteoporosis, pressure ulcers, sleep apnea, bowel problems, urinary tract infections, sexual dysfunction, and more. Draper Law Office understands how serious a back injury can be. These injuries can be long-lasting and costly to treat. Schedule a consultation by filling out the online form or by calling their office at (407) 846.0075.

Florida Health Officials Issue Blue-Green Algae Bloom Alert for Lake Marian

The Florida Department of Health in Osceola County has issued a Health Alert for the presence of harmful bluegreen algal toxins in Lake Marian, near the boat ramp. This is in response to water samples taken on 12/05/2022. The public should exercise caution in and around Lake Marian. Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

• Do not drink, swim, wade, use personal watercraft, water ski or boat in waters where there is a visible bloom.

• Wash your skin and clothing with soap and water if you have contact with algae or discolored or smelly water.

• Keep pets away from the area. Waters where there are algae blooms are not safe for animals. Pets and livestock should have a different source of water when algae blooms are present.

• Do not cook or clean dishes with water contaminated by algae blooms. Boiling the water will not eliminate the toxins.

• Eating fillets from healthy fish caught in freshwater lakes experiencing blooms is safe. Rinse fish fillets with tap or bottled water, throw out the guts and cook fish well.

• Do not eat shellfish in waters with algae blooms. What is blue-green algae?

Blue-green algae are a type of bacteria that is common in Florida’s freshwater environments. A bloom occurs when rapid growth of algae leads to an accumulation of individual cells that discolor water and often produce floating mats that emit unpleasant odors. Some environmental factors that contribute to blue-green algae blooms are sunny days, warm water temperatures, still water conditions and excess nutrients. Blooms can appear year-round but are more frequent in summer and fall.

Harmony Longhorns get defensive on St. Cloud Bulldogs, win sixth straight

Frans Richardson scored a game-high 18 points and a swarming Harmony defense limited St. Cloud to just six first half points as the Longhorns rolled to a 50-21 rivalry win over the Bulldogs on Wednesday night.

The win was Harmony’s third straight win over St. Cloud and pushed the Longhorns to 6-1 on the season. St. Cloud fell to a 5-3.

Any chance of a St. Cloud win evaporated early in this one as Harmony came out in a full court press and forced 14 first half turnovers. The Bulldogs hit just 2 of 20 first half field goal attempts and trailed 15-5 after one quarter and 30-6 at the half.

“Our depth was the key to the win tonight,” Harmony coach Duke Leonardo said. “When you play two units it keeps everyone fresh and it allowed us to put a lot of pressure on their offense all night. Our goal is to always hold an opponent under 40 and when we can do that like we did tonight, I always feel pretty good about the outcome.”

About the only thing that kept the game from getting totally out of hand in the first half was the Longhorns poor performance at the free throw line – where Harmony went four for 14 from the charity stripe in the first half. “That’s really not indicative of our team, we’re usually pretty good at the line,” Leonardo said. “Not sure whether we were just tight because it was a rivalry game or whether it was just one of those nights, but it’s was certainly not typical.”

Harmony, which finished the game 6 for 17 from the free throw line (35%) came into the game shooting almost 68% from the line. Both teams were sloppy in the third quarter.

Harmony turned the ball over 10 times, including six in the first four minutes of the period, but St. Cloud was only able three for 14 in the period and turned the ball over six times. The end result was the Bulldogs were only able to close the gap by one point and trailed 36-13 after three.

St. Cloud’s City Council is looking for ways to incentivize Cathcart Construction, the company involved in the city’s downtown construction project, to complete the project as quickly as possible in order to help its downtown business community.

During the city’s Thursday night meeting Trevor Estill, owner of The Garage Bar and Thee Dog House on Pennsylvania Avenue, told Council members the delays are hurting his businesses.

”It has become absolutely dire,” Estill said. “I’ve been one of the most ardent supporters of this project. The outcome will be very beneficial to downtown and the businesses. But we are dying a slow, painful death because of all the construction delays.”

City Manager Veronica Miller said Cathcart Construction informed the city this week that the project again delayed. Cathcart was expecting the downtown project to be most complete by Dec. 2, in time for the Dec. 3 Christmas parade, but because of the impacts of the recent hurricane, along with a number of unforeseen underground conflicts, the construction company has extended the expected completion date.

Creative Inspiration Journey School sees continued student growth amid school facility expansion

From the first day that Creative Inspiration Journey School opened its doors in the Fall of 2019, it was easy to see that it wasn’t going to be just another tuition free public charter school, it was focused on creating an environment of learning for its students unlike any other school in the St. Cloud and Osceola communities.

CIJS uses the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, which allows children to direct their own learning process according to their needs, and in a less-structured environment. This gives the students a apportunity to grow at their own pace, both as individuals – and community members.

Orlando Health hospitals awarded top grades for patient safety

Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital and Orlando Health South Lake Hospital have received “A” grades for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety and transparency in the U.S. health system. For Orlando Health South Lake, this is its 9th consecutive “A” grade from Leapfrog.

“Our clinical teams work extremely hard to achieve and maintain outstanding quality of care across the entire Orlando Health system,” said George Ralls, MD, chief medical officer, Orlando Health. “We have implemented quality and safety clinical practices across our system that protect our patients from harm and ensure the best possible outcomes. Our focus on quality and commitment to excellence has resulted in awards and recognition by other national, well-respected organizations.”

The American Heart Association recently recognized six Orlando Health hospitals for consistently following the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke. In addition, U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, ranked five Orlando Health clinical programs amongst the top 50 in the US, including a number one ranking for Neonatology in the state of Florida in 2022. Additionally, six Orlando Health hospitals were recognized as 2022-2023 High Performing hospitals in a total of twelve categories. And Orlando Health recently received 24 Beacon Awards for Excellence in nursing care from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses – more than any other healthcare system in Florida – recognizing high-quality patient care and a healthy work environment.

“Earning top recognitions for quality and safety is a continual journey,” adds Dr. Ralls. “Every achievement is a reflection of our mission to improve the health and quality of life of the individuals and communities we serve”

5 Tips for a Healthy, and Satisfying, Holiday Season From Orlando Health

It can be tough to resist your aunt’s special stuffing or mom’s once-ayear Bûche de Noël when you’re trying to avoid packing on the pounds over the holidays. The truth is: You don’t have to. You just need to be smart and intentional about what you eat.

The following tips will help you enjoy the holidays – and not feel regret come New Year’s Day.

Try These Strategies

1. Don’t abandon hard-earned good habits just because it’s the holiday season.

Even if you’re doing OK maintaining other parts of your healthy routine, like exercising and getting good sleep, food and alcohol — ever-present at this time — can create special challenges. But many holiday traditions — shopping, wrapping, decorating, caroling — don’t necessarily involve food. Make a list of celebratory activities that don’t revolve around eating, then enlist your family and friends to brainstorm even more personal, meaningful favorites.

2. Don’t skip breakfast — do skip treats you can get 365 days a year. (We see you, M&Ms.)

You can make mashed potatoes any day. But your aunt’s stuffing? That’s special‚ so enjoy it — but skip that store-bought roll. Yes, mindful eating can be hard to practice in a busy season, but the holidays roll around every year — odds are good this won’t be your last piece of pumpkin pie ever. Sugar cravings are real, for sure, and also totally normal. Rather than struggling to eliminate those feelings, try to manage them and find balance in your diet. Give yourself a “cookie budget” — or whatever it is that you really want — and then use it wisely on things that are truly special to you. Ordering pizza on a crazy night? Add a salad. A more balanced diet will help you stay mindful because you’ll get better nutritional value from what you are eating. Just slowing down and making more conscious decisions can cut the calories quickly. But don’t overthink it — if all else fails, eat a vegetable.

Once open in the former Shrek 4-D building in the summer of 2023, Blast will be an interactive blaster game on a “motion-based pathway.” The new attraction will join the existing Despicable Me Minion Mayhem area, which debuted in 2012, and the newly announced Minion Cafe which will form Minion Land in the theme park.
