Oscole County urgers preparation as 2023 Hurricane Season draws nearer

The Atlantic Hurricane season continues to grow closer and on June 1st it becomes official. Hurricane Ian is an example of the tremendous impact that one tropical cyclone can have on Central Florida residents, so preparation is key to safety each year.

Osceola County residents are urged to prepare for the 2023 hurricane season now. One opportunity is the Hurricane Expo today, Saturday, May 20 from 10am to 1pm at the Kissimmee Civic Center hosted by the County’s Office of Emergency Management.

Osceola County residents should also be mindful of the state’s sales tax holiday, which begins May 27 and runs through June 9. The State of Florida will host a second sales tax holiday, August 26 – September 8, 2023, just prior to the peak of hurricane season.

“Our team was tested last year and I’m grateful for their continued dedication and preparation. Their vigilance and planning help keep our community safe when hurricanes and other emergencies arise,” Osceola Commission Chairwoman Viviana Janer said. “Residents should create an emergency plan and gather supplies for themselves and their families in case a storm comes our way.”

Osceola Clerk & Comptroller Kelvin Soto hosts grand opening of Nest Gallery at John B. Morgan Courthouse

Osceola Clerk of the Circuit Court & County Comptroller Kelvin Soto, Esq. recently opened The NEST Gallery, Neighborhood Exhibit for Student Talent—on the second floor of the Judge Jon B. Morgan Courthouse.

The opening, attended by local elected officials, dignitaries, and student artists, was held to celebrate both the gallery’s launch as well as the first installment of 25 pieces of art from Tohopekaliga High School students.

In 2022, Clerk & Comptroller Soto tasked the office’s Communications Specialist, Maggie Rosenbaum, with identifying ways that the administration could update the public-facing interactions our office had with constituents. With hundreds of square feet of available wall space in the Clerk & Comptroller’s second floor Customer Care lobbies, Maggie partnered with colleagues at the Osceola County School District to launch The NEST.

Governor Ron Desantis signs Representative Kristen Arrington’s guidance services bill into law

Representative Kristen Arrington passed SB 196 on the floor of the Florida House of Representatives with unanimous support during the 2023 Legislative Session. On Wednesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill into law.

The law, which will go in effect on July 1, 2023 for the 202324 school year, will require guidance counselors to advise public middle and high school students of all educational opportunities available to them to gain skills that are in demand in the labor market, including technical and trade education programs and how to prepare to obtain post secondary degrees in those areas.

“This legislation will help our children prepare for a better future by letting them know of all the opportunities available to plan and prepare them for a more diversified economy and workforce,” said Representative Arrington.

Osceola Chamber’s Christina Pilkington named 2023 Chamber Professional of the Year

At the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals’ annual conference, which recently took place at Cocoa Beach, Christina Pilkington, Director of Administration at The Osceola Chamber, was named the 2022 Florida Chamber Professional of the Year.

Pilkington, who has been with the Osceola Chamber since 2015, was chosen by a group of her fellow Chamber professionals from around Florida, and played a significant role in the chamber receiving US Chamber of Commerce’s Five Star Accreditation.

The 2023 Osceola County Law Enforcement memorial ceremony honors fallen officers

The Osceola County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony held on Monday, May 17, was a solemn and heartfelt event that paid tribute to the fallen officers who dedicated and sacrificed their lives while serving and protecting the community. This annual ceremony, which took place in Osceola County Courthouse Square, served as a powerful reminder of the commitment and bravery exhibited by law enforcement officers.

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” continues through May as members of the community “walk on the Shingle Creek trail” to experience the beauty and history of Osceola County, while staying healthy, and possibly win some great prizes! The event’s feature sponsor is Kissimmee Utility Authority!

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” encourages the community to live a healthy lifestyle while building awareness of Osceola History’s two museums, Pioneer Village, located at 2491 Babb Road, and the Welcome Center & History Museum, located at 4155 West Vine Street, in Kissimmee.

Nunn, Knox lead Poinciana Eagles past Panthers, 28-0 in Spring Football

Ernest Nunn scored three touchdowns and Akeem Knox rushed for 102 yards and a score as the Poinciana Eagles defeated the Gateway Panthers, 28-0, on Friday night.

It was an impressive showing on both sides of the ball for the Eagles, as they also pitched a shutout on defense – recording five quarterback sacks and eight tackles-forloss; while forcing three turnovers. “I really felt that our defense had a chance to be as good as last fall’s and I still feel that way,”

Poinciana coach Randy Beeken said. “We lost a lot of playmakers on offense and our quarterback situation is certainly unsettled. But tonight we played a back-up running back at quarterback and he threw two touchdown passes. So overall it was a good performance.”

Knox figures to play a key role in Poinciana’s offense next fall. After playing two seasons as a backup behind the Swint brothers and several other talented backs at Osceola High, Knox transferred to Poinciana before the spring semester started and is already penciled in as the Eagles featured back this spring.

“Akeem left, Akeem right, Akeem up the middle, you are going to see a lot of him in the fall,” Beeken said. “He is a tremendous talent and will be the focal point of our offense this year.” Knox’s 102 yards came on just 15 carries and he sat out the last quarter and a half with tightness in his hamstring.

Nunn, who had a solid sophomore season with 385 receiving yards and five touchdowns, looks to be an emerging star for the Eagles. He scored the Poinciana’s first touchdown in the second quarter – taking a reverse and racing 60 yards down the right sideline for a score. In the second half, he beat Gateway deep on a 40-yard touchdown pass and then split the secondary in the fourth quarter for a 26-yard score.

Wilgance Nezius, a backup running back last year, played the entire game at quarterback. “While the starting job at quarterback has not been decided, Wilgance did a great job in playing a new position. Regardless of what position he ends up at, he will be an important part of our team this year,” Beeken said.

Osceola County’s Trasportation Summit in Kissimmee sets the stage for future road projects

Osceola County, in collaboration with the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), the Florida Department of Transportation District 5, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, and MetroPlan Orlando, hosted a highly anticipated Transportation Summit on Tuesday morning, May 9, at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The event served as a platform for key government officials, transportation experts, and stakeholders to share insights about ongoing road projects, future plans, and the positive impact these initiatives will have on residents and visitors in and around Osceola County.

FWC announces 2023 Lionfish challenge to tackle invasive species

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has announced the 2023 Lionfish Challenge, in sponsorship with Zookeeper. HOW COMMON IS THE COLD?

Colds are a minor viral infection that account for more doctor visits than any other illness. Adults, on average, catch two to four colds a year — kids even more — with most cases reported between September and May.

Highly contagious, colds spread much like the flu, by droplets of fluid or inhaled. The most common cause, rhinovirus, accounts for more than 40 percent of reported cases, usually last less than 10 days and can be treated with symptom relief medications and rest.

If left unchecked however, a cold can progress to more serious illnesses. And sneezing, congestion and sore throat also can be symptoms of other ailments.
