The Osceola Chamber to Host 18th Annual Three Kings Day Celebration at Old Town January 3

The Three Kings will once again visit Osceola County in early 2023 in celebration of the Three Kings Day holiday when the Osceola Chamber hosts its 18th annual Three King’s Day Osceola at Old Town in Kissimmee on Sunday, January 8, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

In much of Latin America Three King’s Day, or Día de los Reyes, recognizes the Three Wise Men, or Kings, as they brought their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to baby Jesus. For children in many Latin American cultures, it is the day they most look forward to for holiday gifts and treats.

In the spirit of giving and celebration of Three Kings Day, The Osceola Chamber’s Three Kings Day celebration will include toy giveaways, bicycle and tablet raffles, business vendors, live music, and more. Three Kings Day 2023 is sponsored by Experience Kissimmee.

Serving Osceola County since the early 20th Century, the mission of The Osceola Chamber is to be champions for business and the Osceola community. The Osceola Chamber is nationally accredited five-star chamber and three-time “Chamber of the Year” for the state of Florida.

Osceola County All-stars come up short against Lake County Allstars, 28-26

After scoring on their first play from the scrimmage, the Osceola All-Stars offense went dormant for the next almost three quarters before a frantic rally came up just short in a 28-26 loss to the Lake County All-Stars in the first annual Cure Bowl All-Star Game.

The contest, played at Celebration High School, featured invited all-stars from Osceola County’s eight public schools against an all-star team from Lake County’s public schools.

‘It’s extremely difficult to get any type of consistency with guys that only practiced together for three days and it certainly was apparent with our offense. We simply could not get any consistency. That said, it was a pleasure to coach this kids this week. They are all-stars for a reason and are all leaders. They fought like crazy and got back into the game at the end.”

Osceola’s team, named the Warriors, jumped on top early. After their defense forced a quick three-and- out on Lakeland’s opening drive, Poinciana’s De’kwan Bradly hit Osceola High WR Terry Cruz on a 55-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage to take it a 6-0 lead.

Eustis QB Noel Rodriguez led the Lake County stars on a long 9-play, 63-yard touchdown drive that was capped on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Lake Minneola’s David Ramos to knot the score at 6-6 this 9:20 to go in the first. Mount Dora’s Dante JohnsonTurner extended the lead to 14-6 with a 4-yard touchdown run in the second.

A shanked punt would set Lake up deep inside Osceola territory early in the third quarter. Mount Dora quarterback Matt Butler hit Ramos on a 27-yard pass to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Gary to make it a 21-6 game. Osceola would fight back, as Poinciana running back Davrell Cohn broke off several nice runs and Osceola’s David Buggs capped off a 64-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Poinciana’s Perry Garrett to cut the gap to 21-12.

Celebration Claims Girls Orange Belt Conference Soccer Title

To say that Harmony has dominated the county girls’ high school soccer scene in recent years is a huge understatement. Not only have the Longhorns won or shared the Orange Belt Conference championship for over a decade, they have been dominant in doing so.

So perhaps it was not a surprise when Celebration, one of the many county opponents that the Longhorns have dominated in recent years, exploded into a wild frenzy on Thursday night when the

found themselves on top 2-1 in the Orange Belt

hit

the

“It was really a long time in coming for us,” Storm head coach Rebecca Camis said. “Harmony did a great job with their attack tonight but I was so happy with how we held our form and made sure to stay in position. We were able to pick up a couple of goals on counter attacks and that was the game plan coming in. They (Longhorns) are so sound with both their offense and defense, so we knew we had to take advantage with quick counters.”

Celebration’s (10-1) win marked the Storm’s first ever victory over the Longhorns. In the previous 12 games against Harmony, the Storm was 0-11- 1 and were outscored 67-3 while being shutout nine times. But all of that did not matter on Thursday.

Despite Harmony controlling possession for most of the first half it was Celebration that would take a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half when Anna Balda took a through ball from Mayah Casamalhuapa and came racing down the left flank with 32 minutes left in the first half. She fired a hard shot that goalie Karla Marrero made a fantastic save on but the rebound came right back to Balda, who buried her second shot into the left corner of the net. Trailing 1-0, Harmony had several chances to score the tying goal in the first half. At the 24-minute mark of the first, a shot from the right side by AJ Scheuer just missed the corner of the net. Later a free kick from 35 yards out was stopped by Robbins and the loose ball in front of the goal was cleared away.

Florida Health Officials Issue Blue-Green Algae Bloom Alert for Lake Marian

The Florida Department of Health in Osceola County has issued a Health Alert for the presence of harmful blue-green algal toxins in Lake Marian, near the boat ramp. This is in response to water samples taken on 12/05/2022. The public should exercise caution in and around Lake Marian.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

• Do not drink, swim, wade, use personal watercraft, water ski or boat in waters where there is a visible bloom.

• Wash your skin and clothing with soap and water if you have contact with algae or discolored or smelly water.

• Keep pets away from the area. Waters where there are algae blooms are not safe for animals. Pets and livestock should have a different source of water when algae blooms are present.

• Do not cook or clean dishes with water contaminated by algae blooms. Boiling the water will not eliminate the toxins.

• Eating fillets from healthy fish caught in freshwater lakes experiencing blooms is safe. Rinse fish fillets with tap or bottled water, throw out the guts and cook fish well.

• Do not eat shellfish in waters with algae blooms. What is blue-green algae?

Blue-green algae are a type of bacteria that is common in Florida’s freshwater environments. A bloom occurs when rapid growth of algae leads to an accumulation of individual cells that discolor water and often produce floating mats that emit unpleasant odors. Some environmental factors that contribute to blue-green algae blooms are sunny days, warm water temperatures, still water conditions and excess nutrients. Blooms can appear year-round but are more frequent in summer and fall.

St. Cloud’s City Council is looking for ways to incentivize Cathcart Construction, the company involved in the city’s downtown construction project, to complete the project as quickly as possible in order to help its downtown business community.

During the city’s Thursday night meeting Trevor Estill, owner of The Garage Bar and Thee Dog House on Pennsylvania Avenue, told Council members the delays are hurting his businesses.

”It has become absolutely dire,” Estill said. “I’ve been one of the most ardent supporters of this project. The outcome will be very beneficial to downtown and the businesses. But we are dying a slow, painful death because of all the construction delays.”

City Manager Veronica Miller said Cathcart Construction informed the city this week that the project again delayed. Cathcart was expecting the downtown project to be most complete by Dec. 2, in time for the Dec. 3 Christmas parade, but because of the impacts of the recent hurricane, along with a number of unforeseen underground conflicts, the construction company has extended the expected completion date.

Creative Inspiration Journey School sees continued student growth amid school facility expansion

From the first day that Creative Inspiration Journey School opened its doors in the Fall of 2019, it was easy to see that it wasn’t going to be just another tuition free public charter school, it was focused on creating an environment of learning for its students unlike any other school in the St. Cloud and Osceola communities.

CIJS uses the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, which allows children to direct their own learning process according to their needs, and in a less-structured environment. This gives the students a apportunity to grow at their own pace, both as individuals – and community members.

Orlando Health hospitals awarded top grades for patient safety

Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital and Orlando Health South Lake Hospital have received “A” grades for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety and transparency in the U.S. health system. For Orlando Health South Lake, this is its 9th consecutive “A” grade from Leapfrog.

“Our clinical teams work extremely hard to achieve and maintain outstanding quality of care across the entire Orlando Health system,” said George Ralls, MD, chief medical officer, Orlando Health. “We have implemented quality and safety clinical practices across our system that protect our patients from harm and ensure the best possible outcomes. Our focus on quality and commitment to excellence has resulted in awards and recognition by other national, well-respected organizations.”

The American Heart Association recently recognized six Orlando Health hospitals for consistently following the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke. In addition, U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, ranked five Orlando Health clinical programs amongst the top 50 in the US, including a number one ranking for Neonatology in the state of Florida in 2022. 5 Tips for a Healthy, and Satisfying, Holiday Season From Orlando Health

It can be tough to resist your aunt’s special stuffing or mom’s once-ayear Bûche de Noël when you’re trying to avoid packing on the pounds over the holidays. The truth is: You don’t have to. You just need to be smart and intentional about what you eat.

The following tips will help you enjoy the holidays – and not feel regret come New Year’s Day.

Try These Strategies

1. Don’t abandon hard-earned good habits just because it’s the holiday season.

Even if you’re doing OK maintaining other parts of your healthy routine, like exercising and getting good sleep, food and alcohol — ever-present at this time — can create special challenges. But many holiday traditions — shopping, wrapping, decorating, caroling — don’t necessarily involve food. Make a list of celebratory activities that don’t revolve around eating, then enlist your family and friends to brainstorm even more personal, meaningful favorites.

2. Don’t skip breakfast — do skip treats you can get 365 days a year. (We see you, M&Ms.)

You can make mashed potatoes any day. But your aunt’s stuffing? That’s special‚ so enjoy it — but skip that store-bought roll. Yes, mindful eating can be hard to practice in a busy season, but the holidays roll around every year — odds are good this won’t be your last piece of pumpkin pie ever. Sugar cravings are real, for sure, and also totally normal. Rather than struggling to eliminate those feelings, try to manage them and find balance in your diet. Give yourself a “cookie budget” — or whatever it is that you really want — and then use it wisely on things that are truly special to you. Ordering pizza on a crazy night? Add a salad. A more balanced diet will help you stay mindful because you’ll get better nutritional value from what you are eating. Just slowing down and making more conscious decisions can cut the calories quickly. But don’t overthink it — if all else fails, eat a vegetable.
