With its white sand beaches, crystal-clear springs and rivers, and world-renowned theme park and resort pools, Central Florida, and Osceola County offer an abundance of aquatic recreational opportunities. However, this abundance of water has also led to a troubling increase in drowning-related emergencies in recent years, particularly among children.
According to data from the Florida Department of Health, from 2017 to 2019 combined, Florida ranked the highest in the U.S. for the unintentional drowning death rate among children ages 1 to 4 years (6.29 per 100,000 population). Florida also had the highest unintentional drowning death rate of 3.28 per 100,000 population among children 0 to 9 years of age compared to other states.
This wholly preventable tragedy resulted in more than 90 calls for service from our department in 2021 alone, a record number. Of these, more than 80 involved children, and the majority involved children visiting Osceola County from elsewhere in the state, nation, or internationally.

In the upcoming primary elections on August 20, voters in Florida must remember that the state operates under a closed primary system. This means that only voters registered with a specific political party are eligible to vote for their party’s candidates in the primary election. Understanding this system is crucial for participating effectively in Florida’s electoral process.
A closed primary system restricts voting in primary elections to those who are registered members of a political party. In Florida, this means:
• Registered Republicans can only vote for Republican candidates.
• Registered Democrats can only vote for Democratic candidates.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.
