When we think of sleep disorders, we tend to focus on insomnia. But sleep disorders can also include strange and seemingly inexplicable behaviors, especially in the twilight period between rest and wakefulness. These are known as parasomnias, and the symptoms can vary in severity from patient to patient.

There are three categories of parasomnia.

NON-REM-RELATED PARASOMNIAS

Your sleep cycle each night is divided into REM and non-REM segments. REM is the deepest stage of sleep, named for the rapid eye movement that occurs. Most of the time that you’re under the covers, you experience non-REM sleep.

Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Orlando Health: Lower Your Risk for These 5 Cancers

There are no guarantees that you won’t develop cancer. Many factors –including your genetics and family history – are outside your control. But that doesn’t mean you can’t improve your chances of avoiding some of the more common cancers.

When it comes to determining exactly what causes various cancer tumors to form, there’s still a lot we don’t know. But research increasingly points to a range of factors, including diet and lifestyle choices, that make our bodies more vulnerable.

Let’s take a closer look at five of the most common cancers and what you can do to lower your risk – or at least improve your chances of a positive outcome if you are diagnosed.

SKIN CANCER

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. It usually results from spending too much time in ultraviolet light – either from the sun or artificial tanning lamps. It may not be as prevalent as it once was, but there are still many people chasing tans.

Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a healthy tan. That change in skin color is part of your body’s reaction to having its skin damaged. Those damaged cells have to be replaced by new cells. And every time your body makes new cells, there is a chance for an error that could lead to cancer.

That doesn’t mean you have to avoid the sun completely. But you can reduce your skin cancer risk by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen (at least SPF 30), donning protective clothes and avoiding tanning beds. And keep an eye on your body for signs of new skin growths or changes in existing moles, birth marks, freckles or bumps.
