With seven classifications consisting of 16 teams each in four different regions, most football districts in the state of Florida are small – consisting of between 3-5 teams. With an automatic bid to the state playoffs reserved for each of the 16 district champions, each district game becomes vitally important.
For the five teams in Osceola County participating in the system, that journey to state playoffs begins this week as all will play their first district games of the season. “If you want to get to the state playoffs, winning your district is the absolute most important goal of the season,” St. Cloud head coach Mike Short said at the beginning of pre-season camp. “Although there are at-large spots available, you don’t want to put your fate in the hands of computer rankings.”

Bulldogs Fall Short in Comeback after Mustangs’ Interception Seals the Win in Overtime
Merritt Island’s Liam Miller booted three field goals and Courtland Campbell came up with a huge interception in the end zone, as the Mustangs slipped out of St. Cloud with a 26-23 overtime win on Friday night.
The loss, the third straight for St. Cloud (2-3), was a bitter pill to swallow as the Bulldogs rallied from a double digit deficit to take the lead in the game – only to see the Mustangs (4-1) rally in the final minute to tie the game with a Miller field goal and then win it in overtime.

Lady Kowboys Dominate for Fifth Consecutive Win, Sweeping the Horns in Straight Sets
It was the Jordin Southall show on Tuesday night as the Osceola Kowboys rolled to their fifth straight win on the season – taking down county rival and previously undefeated Harmony in straight sets, 25-19, 25-14, 25-11.
Southall came up huge in the first set, recording eight kills in leading the Kowboys to a six-point win. Osceola was ahead comfortably for most of the set, but a 4-0 Harmony mini-run cut the gap to five at 21-16. But Southall came up with back-to-back kills to make it 2316 and Osceola held on for the win.

Drive to Make a Positive Difference: Osceola Council on Aging’s Annual Jeep Raffle Returns Beginning July 1
Start your engines! The Osceola Council on Aging has announced the return of its annual Jeep Raffle Fundraiser, beginning July 1. All proceeds from this event go directly towards their programs and services, helping the advocacy agency to continue providing vital assistance to those in our community who need it most. By purchasing tickets, you’ll not only have the opportunity to win a beautiful new Jeep but also make a meaningful impact on the lives of your neighbors in need.
Ticket donations start on July 1, 2024, with each ticket priced at $25. There is no limit to the number of tickets you can purchase, and the more tickets you buy, the greater your chances of winning. The raffle is open to legal residents of the United States who are 18 years of age or older at the time of entry, excluding executive staff of the Osceola Council on Aging. KUA Prepares for Tropical Storm Helene: Activates Emergency Plan and Urges Residents to Take Safety Precautions
In preparation for the potential impact of Tropical Storm Helene, Kissimmee Utility Authority has activated its Emergency Operations Plan, currently operating at Alert Level 3, with plans to advance to Alert Level 4 as the storm approaches its 85-square mile service area in Osceola County.
Depending on its path, Helene may be capable of causing widespread power outages. In addition, restoration may be hampered by flooding, downed trees, high winds or other obstacles. Once wind speeds reach 45 mph or more, crews can no longer safely restore power. KUA crews are prepared to work long hours after the storm passes, conducting their damage assessment analysis and restoring service to customers as quickly and as safely as possible.
Customers who experience a power outage can report it quickly by texting the word “out,” to 877-582-7700. This is the fastest way to notify KUA about an outage. For storm updates visit facebook.com/mykua
After severe weather, KUA crews restore power by repairing transmission lines, substations and main distribution lines. Once the main power lines are repaired, crews turn their attention to individual customer outages. KUA’s real-time outage map can be viewed at kua.com/map.

Building for a Safer Tomorrow: Osceola County Fire Rescue Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Fire Station 71
Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS, alongside Osceola County leadership and key project partners, celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fire Station 71, located on Westside Boulevard. This modern facility will replace the current station on West U.S. Highway 192, ensuring enhanced capabilities and continued coverage for the community.
“This groundbreaking represents the County’s ongoing commitment to public safety,” said Fire Chief Larry Collier. “It is part of a long term plan to improve the level of service for the community by placing fire stations in more efficient locations and constructing them to not only meet the needs of the firefighters and apparatus but also handle future growth.”
County officials were joined by representatives from Arnco Construction, the project’s construction contractor; Ardmore Roderick, the project’s planning contractor; and BRPH, the project’s architects.

Hurricane Preparedness Guide
Kissimmee Utility Authority’s 2024 Osceola Hurricane Guide is a free, bilingual, and comprehensive preparedness guide offered annually to Osceola County resident that provides a clear and simple way to ensure you and your family are well-prepared for potential severe weather in and around Osceola County.
A partnership between KUA, Osceola County, the cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud, Toho Water Authority and UF IFAS Extension in Osceola County, the handbook includes information on emergency shelters, evacuation routes, generator safety and power outage restoration as well as helpful telephone numbers, and a disaster supplies checklist.
The guide can be downloaded in English and Spanish from KUA’s website at kua.com/ storm. Printed copies of the bilingual handbook are now available in KUA’s Carroll Street lobby, located at 1701 W. Carroll St, Kissimmee, FL.

Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington is reminding all voters that the deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot for the upcoming November election is October 24. To ensure your voice is heard and your ballot arrives in time, it’s important to submit your request as soon as possible.
Recent legislation changed vote-by-mail request expirations. All vote-by-mail requests expire at the end of every election cycle. Voters who have not placed a request for a vote-by-mail ballot will be receiving a mailer with information regarding all three methods of casting a ballot, along with a vote-by-mail request form and return envelope. Anyone who would like to vote-by-mail is encouraged to make their request as soon as possible.

Chipotle's New 'Autocado' Guac Robots Can Prep Avocados in Just 26 Seconds
Chipotle has unveiled its latest innovation in food preparation: a robot called the "Autocado," designed specifically to peel, core, and cut avocados by the case. The prototype, which is part of Chipotle's use of cobots (collaborative robots), is intended to streamline the guacamole preparation process. Workers still mash the avocados by hand, but the Autocado drastically reduces the labor involved in prepping the fruit.
Currently being tested at Chipotle’s Huntington Beach location (20972 Magnolia St.), the company claims the robot can process an avocado in just 26 seconds, freeing up employees for other tasks and enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, the “size agnostic” design allows the machine to adjust itself automatically to accommodate avocados of varying sizes.
