Silver Spurs Riding Club’s Special Rodeo: A Legacy of Love, Passion, and Inspiration

Decades ago, a touching story of love and inclusion began with Fran McLaughlin, a dedicated member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club. During a visit to the “Exceptional Rodeo” at the 1987 National Finals Rodeo, Fran was deeply inspired by what she witnessed. Motivated by her own child with special needs, she envisioned an event where all children in Osceola County, regardless of their abilities, could experience the excitement and joy of rodeo. From this vision, the Special Rodeo was born.

For over 30 years, the Special Rodeo has fostered a meaningful connection between Osceola County’s youth and the rich western traditions of the Silver Spurs Riding Club, offering children the opportunity to ride horses, rope a steer dummy, or sit atop the famous Big Blue Boot, all with the support of volunteers, rodeo queens, contestants, and club members.

The day concludes with cheers, trophies, and a celebration of the courage, spirit, and love these children bring to the event.

Today, the legacy of the Special Rodeo is carried forward by Silver Spurs Riding Club members Bridget Coggins and Sara Berlinski, and a huge team of passionate volunteers, like former Big Boss Gary Ketchum and others, who help the special kiddos get up on a horse before they make their way around the iconic Silver Spurs Rodeo dirt.

Bulldogs Capture OBC Girls Weightlifting Championship,

Extending Domination

Heading into Friday night’s OBC Girls Weightlifting Championships, St. Cloud coach Cory Aun had some concerns about his team’s ability to defend its title. All-State lifter Reese Butler was out with an injury and Aun knew rival Harmony had some strong contenders – especially in the lighter weight classes.

“The loss of Reese earlier in the season to a torn ulnar collateral in her elbow was devastating,” Aun said. “We knew we were going to concede as many as five or six weight classes to Harmony in each discipline. Still, we felt good about our depth and our upper weight class lifters have been quietly putting together a solid year.”

Aun’s concerns maybe were just a little unfounded as St. Cloud won both the traditional (clean and jerk/bench) and Olympic (snatch plus clean-and-jerk) team competition to tally 154 points and win their 15th consecutive Orange Belt Conference championship. Harmony (122) was runner-up and Tohopekaliga (74) was third. Osceola (26), Liberty (20), Poinciana (18), Celebration (17) and Gateway (4) rounded out the scoring.

Kowboys Edge Bulldogs For Orange Belt Conference Boys Basketball Crown

The anticipated showdown between one loss Osceola and two-loss St. Cloud for the Orange Belt Conference basketball championship lived up to its hype on Friday night.

Jordan Isaac scored 22 points and Jordan Mundle came up with a huge blocked shot with 11 seconds to go, as Osceola (19-1) rallied for a 62-57 come-from-behind win over St. Cloud (18-3) at a packed Bob Baker Gymnasium on Friday night.

“Just a great basketball game between two really good teams in an absolutely electric atmosphere,” Osceola coach Steve Mason said. “Overall, both teams played well and played with a lot of heart, we were fortunate to make the plays we had to make at the end to win.”

The loss denied St. Cloud a second straight OBC championship, but Coach Tommy Billiteri said it was the type of game that his team and can learn and build from as the playoffs approach. “They (Osceola) have only one loss this season and are highly ranked and yet we went stayed with them,” the second-year coach said. “At the end of the day, they made one or two plays more than we did.

Gateway Panthers Break St. Cloud Bulldogs Streak,

Capture OBC Girls Basketball

Junior Alyssa Marino scored 11 of her game-high 22 points in the decisive fourth quarter as the Gateway Panthers ended years of frustration – by winning the Orange Belt Conference Tournament with a 55-49 win over St. Cloud.

Gateway, 18-4, entered the game as the tournament’s top seed but had lost 18 consecutive games to the Bulldogs dating back to the 2011-12 season. The victory not only gave the Panthers their first OBC title in school history but also broke St. Cloud’s five-year stranglehold over the championship.

“It feels great to finally win this title,” Panthers coach Justin Marino said. “It was a physical game and they (the officials) were letting them play. It’s the sort of game we actually like playing in but we weren’t hitting our shots for most of the game and we fell behind.”

Normally both a high-scoring (71 points per game) and an outstanding shooting team (48%), Gateway made just two of 16 shots in the first quarter and shot just 29% for the game.

Meanwhile, St. Cloud was controlling the action through the first three periods.

St. Cloud Chamber President Dirk Webb Reflects on 2024, Vision and Hope for 2025

Positively Osceola connected with influential community leaders, inviting them to reflect on the achievements and challenges of 2024 while sharing their aspirations and goals for 2025. Among those offering valuable insights and a forward-looking vision was St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Dirk Webb.

"In the past few weeks, I’ve sent messages to our membership regarding various events and legislative issues and I enjoy doing that. I also wrote messages to our members for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years expressing my hopes and wishes for that season. Thank you to Positively Osceola for allowing me to expand on those topics with some thoughts on 2024 and the exciting prospects for our community in 2025.

Like most of you, 2024 was filled with a number of successes and fortunately, just a few lows. One of the main goals we set for the year was not so much numbers but being the very best we can be in whatever we do. I understand that for numbers driven people this might be difficult so let me help you with that."

St. Cloud Mayor Chris Robertson Reflects on 2024, Shares Vision and Hope for 2025

It’s been a busy year here in the City of St. Cloud. The city started 2024 celebrating the opening of our brand new skate park at Ted Broda Park on Michigan Avenue. This $1 million investment stays busy with kids of all ages and has been a great addition to the many parks and recreational opportunities we provide.

In 2024, we completed the new Fire Training Facility at our Cord Avenue training complex, where our firefighters train year-round. The new training building provides seating for classes up to 100 people, making St. Cloud a central location for firefighters from around the state to hone their skills.

We also opened our new Fire Station 34 on Nora Tyson Road. This is the 4th fire station serving our residents and has reduced our emergency response times.

We’ve faced some adversity this year. In March, the city was targeted by cybercriminals. Our city leadership and our IT team immediately went to work to make sure city services could continue uninterrupted.

Hope Partnership CEO Rev. Mary Lee Downey Reflects on 2024, Vision and Hope for 2025

Prostate Wellness: Dietary Choices from Orlando Health That Make a Difference

Eating right can keep your heart, digestion and brain functioning properly, but did you know a healthy diet can help your prostate, too? While there are certain factors outside of your control that affect prostate health, such as your age and family history, making healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent prostate problems.

Why Prostate Health Matters

An important part of a man’s reproductive system, the prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate produces fluid that contains enzymes, minerals and proteins that nourish and transport sperm.

Maintaining prostate health is important for men of all ages, but as you get older and risk increases for complications like incontinence, sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer, it’s even more essential.

Orlando Health: Strengthen Your Aging Bones with Smart Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Choices

As you grow older, it is inevitable that your bones will become more fragile. It’s simply part of your body’s natural life cycle. But that doesn’t mean you are powerless to slow the process – or bolster the strength of your bones to avoid osteoporosis.

From the time you are born, your bone tissue is constantly breaking down and rebuilding, through bone remodeling. The process operates at different rates throughout your life.

You reach peak bone mass in your 20s and then hit a period of stability throughout your 30s. But then sometime in your 40s and 50s, your bones start breaking down faster than your body can rebuild them.
