Road Warrior Gateway Panthers to Face Tough Hurdles in 2023 Football Season
In face of some obstacles that have presented some almost insurmountable problems, Marlin Roberts tried to remain positive as he heads into his 24th season overall and 15th year as head coach of the Gateway Panthers.
Still, the pain and frustration is noticeable in his voice as he talks about the school that he has loves and has shown rock-solid dedication to for more than two decades. “We have had more than our fair share of problems the last couple of seasons and this year may be the most difficult of them all,” Roberts says with a audible sigh. “You really don’t want to say we are in survival mode, but that’s sort of where we are.”
The issues are enormous.
For more than a year, the Gateway campus has been under a total reconstruction. The front of the school has numerous barricades that resemble security checkpoints on a foreign soil army base. His football parking lot has mountains of dirt, pipes, and heavy duty equipment.
During spring football and much of fall training camp, Roberts has often had to find random fields to hold practices – which has included moving several tons of iron to set up makeshift weight rooms.

Heat Wave Prompts All-time High for Electricity use in Kissimmee for Second Consecutive Day
When the heat index in the Kissimmee region topped 110 degrees on Tuesday, residents set a new all-time record for electricity use.
Kissimmee Utility Authority recorded an instantaneous system peak of 439.2 megawatts at 5:12 p.m. on Tuesday. On Monday, the utility recorded a system peak load of 435.7 megawatts, shattering the previous record of 416.2 set on July 13, 2022.
With heat indices forecasted to remain above 100 degrees through next week, air conditioners are working overtime. KUA offers the following energy-saving tips that require little or no expense and can help to reduce summertime energy costs:
• Set the thermostat on the highest comfortable setting (KUA recommends 78-80 degrees). Raising the temperature just two degrees can reduce cooling costs by as much as five percent.
• Change or clean air conditioner filters monthly. Dirty filters can increase operating costs by 20 percent.

Haines City Drops St. Cloud 34-6, Apopka Edges Osceola in Preseason Kickoff Classic
It was mixed reviews for both the St. Cloud and Osceola high school football teams as they went through their final dress rehearsals on Friday night prior to the start of the 2023 regular season.
At Austin-Tindall Park, St. Cloud dropped a 34-6 decision to Haines City; while the Kowboys lost a 16-15 decision to state power Apopka in its pre-season Kickoff Classic. Both games were exhibitions and do not count on the regular season record.
“To tell you the truth, I really thought we played well tonight,” Osceola head coach Eric Pinellas said. “We had a few first half jitters but I thought we moved the ball well on offense and I thought our defense put up an excellent effort against a really talented, well-coached team.”
Trailing 3-0 in the game, quarterback Cam West hit Notorious Reynolds on a slant for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead. Although the Kowboys would fall behind 10-7 and never regain the lead, Pinellas said he was happy with his team’s effort. “Our offensive line played really well and we were able to establish a running game. Both of our quarterbacks made some plays and our young secondary really did some good things. With only two starters back between our defensive line and linebacker group, I thought they also played extremely well. For a first game against a really good opponent, I saw a lot of positives out there.”
Things were not as close for the Bulldogs in dropping a 28-point decision to the Hornets in their pre-season game.
The contest was close in the first half, however. After Haines City took a 6-0 as quarterback Sumari Wilson capped a six-play, 55-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Keshon Taylor, St. Cloud would take over with 7:48 remaining in the first half. Logan King would direct a 16-play drive that included three impressive conversions on third down; but the drive would end as time expired on 15-yard line with King fumbling on the final play of the half.

Orlando Health: Cottage Cheese: The Protein
Powerhouse That’s a Dreamy, Creamy TikTok Hit
More than 550 million views on TikTok can’t be wrong: Cottage cheese is hot. Blended into ice cream or bread dough or straight off the spoon, it’s fun to watch Gen Z discover the creamy goodness your grandmother loved.
But cottage cheese goes back further than that — curdled-milk cheese is mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey, and there’s evidence of its existence in the Middle East as early as 5,000 B.C. So why the hullabaloo now?
Some put it down to Americans’ insatiable taste for soft and creamy comfort foods. But cottage cheese has survived the eons for a good reason: It’s packed with protein. One cup can contain as much as 25 grams, the equivalent of a double cheeseburger. But as with that burger, there can be other things to be aware of, like the amount of salt and added sugar.

INJURY LAW
Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?
Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.
Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Salvador N. Lanza, MD Cardiologist Orlando Health Heart and Vascular Institute
When a prominent young athlete suffers a cardiac arrest, it creates shockwaves in the world of sports and beyond. How does this happen to someone in peak physical condition? And what does that mean for the rest of us?
In the most recent incident, Bronny James – son of NBA superstar LeBron James – had a cardiac arrest during a team practice at the University of Southern California. The 18-year-old James survived, in part, because of quick action by team staffers. Among the general population, the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest is less than 12 percent, largely because bystanders don’t take appropriate action.
These high-profile events – as was the case earlier this year when NFL player Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during a game – draw attention to potential heart problems faced by young athletes.
Although these are rare occurrences, sudden cardiac arrest is still the No. 1 cause of death among this group. Sports programs are getting better at detecting potential problems before they arise.
We still don’t know exactly what caused James’ heart issue. But we can look at some of the potential causes.
CARDIAC ARREST IN YOUNG ATHLETES
When cardiac arrest in occurs in people under the age of 35, it’s usually not caused by the same factors (artery blockage, for example) responsible for cardiac arrest in older adults. Instead, it tends to be a condition the athlete was born with or something that was acquired.
