High School Football is Back, Osceola County Teams Attend Media Day at Camping World Stadium, Practices Start Monday!
Several schools from Osceola County participated in the Florida Citrus Sports High School Media Day on Monday as an unofficial kickoff to the 2023 season. Player and coaching contingents from Osceola, St. Cloud, Poinciana, Celebration, Tohopekaliga and Harmony participated in the event.
Practices can begin on Monday, July 31. Teams may play in a non-counting Kickoff Classic exhibition game the weekend of Aug. 18 and the 10-game regular season begins the weekend of Aug. 25. St. Cloud High will get a jump on other county school when they will have a “Midnight Madness” season-opening practice a few minutes after 12 a.m. on Monday morning.
“We did it last year and the players had a lot of fun,” Head Coach Mike Short said. “It’s just a different way to start pre-season camp.”
Short told reporters he was “quietly optimistic” after his team won seven games last season and returns a solid contingent of players including junior quarterback Logan King, athlete TJ Griffin, WR Owen Conner, and OT Conner Howes. King is a two-year starter who threw for 1900 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore and Conner is a junior tackle who already has had numerous D-1 offers.

Tonight’s Mega Millions Jackpot is at $820 Million, Here’s How Much a Winner Could Get After Taxes
The Mega Millions jackpot continues its upward march through the month of July, with an estimated prize of $820 million ($422.0 million cash) on tap for tonight’s drawing, Tuesday, July 25. The big prize keeps growing after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Friday night. The winning white balls were 29, 40, 47, 50 and 57, plus the gold Mega Ball 25.
Tonight’s drawing will be the 28th in this current roll, which began after the jackpot was last won in New York on April 18. If won at that level, it would be the fifth largest jackpot in the history of the game.
It was almost exactly one year ago when the jackpot reached similar heights, ultimately won at $1.337 billion on July 29, 2022. That was the third time Mega Millions awarded a prize greater than $1 billion; there have now been four winning jackpots of $1 billion or more.

Back-to-School Spending Expected to Decline as Inflation Takes its Toll
After 18 months of inflation, higher prices weigh on many K-12 families as they prepare for the upcoming school year.
In addition to a 23.7% increase in the cost of school supplies in the past two years (per the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index), 3 in 10 (31%) surveyed parents say their households are in a worse financial situation than last year, and half (51%) expect the economy to weaken in the next six months. According to the “2023 Deloitte Back-to-School Survey,” consumers across income groups are expected to prioritize their spending and find ways to economize throughout the season. However, most parents are also willing to splurge on specific items for their children, signaling an opportunity for retailers heading into the back-to-school shopping season.
Deloitte’s back-to-school survey was conducted online using an independent research panel between May 26 and June 1, 2023 and surveyed 1,212 parents with at least one child attending school in grades K-12 this fall.

New low pressure system in the Atlantic could grow and threaten Florida’s East Coast, National Hurricane Center says
The National Hurricane Center is tracking a weather system in the Atlantic that they say could possibly grow into a tropical depression or more off the east coast of Florida.
The NHC’s 2 p.m. tropical update showed a weak low pressure system a few hundred miles south of Bermuda that could develop into something more as it nears the east coast of U.S., and as we in Central Florida do during this time of the year, we will keep a keen eye on the system.
“Environmental conditions are expected to become marginally conducive for some gradual development of this system as it moves towards the southeastern U.S. coast later this week and into the weekend,” forecasters said.

Gunner Holland, Osceola High School wrestler severely burned while at wrestling camp, on road to recovery
Gunner Holland, a two-time state wrestling champion and a rising senior at Osceola High School, was severely injured in a freak burning accident late last week while attending a wrestling camp at Lake Highland Prep. Holland was was participating in the camp in preparation for a national tournament in Fargo, ND.
The incident occurred when Holland accidentally sat in some liquid that had spilled on a bench. The liquid turned out to be an undiluted cleaning solution that had apparently leaked out of a container. Holland immediately experienced a burning sensation, but he continued to compete in the camp for approximately three hours before the pain became too intense to bear.
Holland ended up being rushed to the emergency room and later admitted to the burn unit at Orlando Regional Medical Center with second degree akaline burns to his bottom and back of his legs.
“Gunner’s a tough kid and when he first noticed the burning sensation, he said he had no idea what was causing it,” his mother Samantha Gunner said. “He just kept going for several hours until the pain became too intense. I visited him on Monday and doctors are hoping he’ll be able to come home tonight or tomorrow. He’s just heartbroken that he is going to miss the opportunity to wrestle at Nationals. Because he played football the past three years, this would have been his first opportunity to go.”
Holland won Class 3A FHSAA State Championships as both a freshman and sophomore. Last year, wrestling through a host of injuries, he rallied to a third place finish.
Brandi Deal, a family friend of the Holland family, has started a Go fund Me Page to help Gunner and his family deal with medical bills and anticipated family expenses dealing with this unfortunate event.

Arrive Alive This Summer: Be Safe, Slow Down, Never Drive Impaired, Buckle Up
Traveling throughout Florida can be just as fun as getting to your destination. During the summer travel season, Florida’s roads can be some of the busiest in the country. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is educating everyone on safe driving practices to always Arrive Alive.
SPEEDING – SLOW DOWN, STAY COOL
• As a motorist, it’s your responsibility to know and obey the speed limit on each road you travel.
• Speed limits are in place to keep you and those around you safe. Together, we can create a safer summer for all by slowing down and staying cool on the road.
• In Florida, the speed limit will never be higher than 70 mph on highways. Slow down – no excuses.
• Speeding is against the law and extremely dangerous. Obeying speed limits improves safety by reducing the probability and severity of crashes.

INJURY LAW
Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?
Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.
Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

FAMILY LAW
Draper Law: Showing positive parenting
When parents of minor children divorce, it can be several years before their involvement with the court will end. Ideally, both parties will abide by their thoughtfully created parenting agreement and make changes which support their children’s wellbeing. However, as time passes and circumstances change, it is not uncommon for parents to disagree about what is in the best interest of their kids. A parent may also claim the other does not have good parenting abilities and seek to make legal changes to the parenting plan. In this situation, the other parent may have to provide evidence of their positive parenting skills.
The Draper Law Office has attorneys who are experienced with helping clients with child custody and parenting time issues and can help. Call 407.846.0075 today or go to DraperLawOffice.com to set up your free, no-obligation consultation in one of their three locations: St. Cloud, Kissimmee, and Orlando.

HEALTH
Ashlee Wright, MDA, RD, LD/N Outpatient Registered Dietitian Orlando Health
Overhauling your diet sounds daunting, right? But small tweaks can make a lasting difference in your health and nutrition. These five changes — plus tips on how to achieve them — can help you score quick improvements in how you feel and give you the confidence to try for even bigger changes over time.
Eat More Fiber
If you’re only going to try one thing on this list, make it adding more fiber — it’s easier than you think. Look at a list of high-fiber foods — odds are, you’ll find things there that you already love (for example raspberries and blackberries, which each pack 8 grams of fiber per cup). Increasing fruits and veggies you already like is as simple as adding them to your grocery list more frequently.
Why does fiber matter? It’s often associated with improved digestion — a big plus for anybody who has issues there — but it also helps with blood-sugar control and weight management. A lot of fiber-rich food is also rich in prebiotics, which helps to feed the “good” bacteria in our gut. A word of caution: Go slowly. The goal is 25 grams of fiber a day — most Americans don’t get anywhere near that, and if you add that much in a hurry you may feel bloated and uncomfortable while your body adjusts. Instead aim to add about 5 grams a week until you reach the recommended amount.
Easy ways to start: Switch from white bread or pasta to whole wheat. For picky eaters, try the middle ground of breads and pastas with fiber added that don’t taste quite so wheaty.
Drink More Water
We know, we know — many people don’t like the taste of water. But being wellhydrated improves brain and digestive function, maintains your skin’s elasticity and keeps blood sugar better controlled (because it makes your blood more dilute and the sugars less concentrated than if you are dehydrated). You don’t have to guzzle from a jug — refilling a small cup multiple times a day can seem more doable at first. Try a bottle with a built-in infuser where you can add fresh fruit to flavor the water.
