NHTSA: Almost One-Third of Traffic Fatalities Are Speed-Related Crashes
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is partnering with advocates and experts from across the country to launch its “Speeding Wrecks Lives” speeding prevention campaign. The launch comes as new data show that while there has been three quarters of a slight dip in overall roadway deaths, speeding fatalities reached a 14year high in 2021 and make up almost one-third of all traffic fatalities.
The campaign, which runs through July 31, is one of many ways in which the U.S. Department of Transportation is working to address the crisis of deaths on our roadways through its National Roadway Safety Strategy. The NHTSA campaign is supported by a $9.6 million national media buy featuring English and Spanish-language ads running on television, radio and digital platforms. The ads target drivers ages 18 to 44, who data show are most likely to be involved in speeding-related fatal crashes.
During a recent press event, NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson, together with Lorraine Martin, President and CEO of the National Safety Council, and Dr. Will Smith, an emergency department physician at St. John’s Health in Jackson, Wyoming, emphasized the dangers of speeding and the efforts made around the country to prevent crashes. Also lending their voices were Captain Cory Carlisle of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department; Captain Christopher Vetter, Commander of the New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety; and Lieutenant Maurice Raines of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, who participated via taped remarks.

Orlando Health: The Skinny on Diet Sodas — Old Warnings Don’t Apply (But There Is a Better Choice)
Gone are the days when diet soda was thought to contain cancer-causing agents (unless you are a lab rat with a serious soft drink problem). The artificial sweeteners and chemicals they contain have been found safe for most people in reasonable amounts, and some brands are even fortified with vitamins and minerals. But are they the best choice for your body?
NO QUICK FIX
We’ve all heard stories of someone who simply cut out sweetened soda and lost a ton of weight. But unless you are that addicted lab rat, there’s very little evidence to support that switching to diet soda alone will have much effect, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Kissimmee Utility Authority Board Adopts $300 Million Budget for 2024
On Wednesday, the Kissimmee Utility Authority board of directors approved a $300 million operating and capital budget for fiscal year 2024. The vote came after several Board discussions and a public hearing on the budget.
The approved budget is a 3 percent decrease from the 2023 budget. The decrease is related primarily to lower expenditures in fuel and purchased power. This budget also marks the utility’s 19th consecutive year without a base rate increase. The utility’s last base rate increase was in July 2005.
The budget authorizes 288 full-time equivalent positions, an increase of one position, and reflects a five percent market level adjustment for employees.

Gunner Holland, Osceola High School wrestler severely burned while at wrestling camp, on road to recovery
Gunner Holland, a two-time state wrestling champion and a rising senior at Osceola High School, was severely injured in a freak burning accident late last week while attending a wrestling camp at Lake Highland Prep. Holland was was participating in the camp in preparation for a national tournament in Fargo, ND.
The incident occurred when Holland accidentally sat in some liquid that had spilled on a bench. The liquid turned out to be an undiluted cleaning solution that had apparently leaked out of a container. Holland immediately experienced a burning sensation, but he continued to compete in the camp for approximately three hours before the pain became too intense to bear.
Holland ended up being rushed to the emergency room and later admitted to the burn unit at Orlando Regional Medical Center with second degree akaline burns to his bottom and back of his legs.
“Gunner’s a tough kid and when he first noticed the burning sensation, he said he had no idea what was causing it,” his mother Samantha Gunner said. “He just kept going for several hours until the pain became too intense. I visited him on Monday and doctors are hoping he’ll be able to come home tonight or tomorrow. He’s just heartbroken that he is going to miss the opportunity to wrestle at Nationals. Because he played football the past three years, this would have been his first opportunity to go.”
Holland won Class 3A FHSAA State Championships as both a freshman and sophomore. Last year, wrestling through a host of injuries, he rallied to a third place finish.
Brandi Deal, a family friend of the Holland family, has started a Go fund Me Page to help Gunner and his family deal with medical bills and anticipated family expenses dealing with this unfortunate event.

Orlando Health: How soon should my child start swimming lessons?
Swimming can be a fun activity for kids, and with Florida’s warm weather, it can be a great way to cool down. But with drowning listed as the top cause of death for children between ages 1 and 4, swimming lessons are key to reducing the risk of tragedy.
So, at what age should you start considering swim lessons for your kids? This may be surprising, but getting them started by the age of 1 can reduce the risk of accidental drowning by 88 percent, according to a study published in the National Library of Medicine. Your child won’t be swimming laps as a toddler, but those early lessons can help them overcome a natural fear of water, while teaching critical survival tactics such as keeping their head above water.

INJURY LAW
Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?
Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.
Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

FAMILY LAW
Draper Law: Showing positive parenting
When parents of minor children divorce, it can be several years before their involvement with the court will end. Ideally, both parties will abide by their thoughtfully created parenting agreement and make changes which support their children’s wellbeing. However, as time passes and circumstances change, it is not uncommon for parents to disagree about what is in the best interest of their kids. A parent may also claim the other does not have good parenting abilities and seek to make legal changes to the parenting plan. In this situation, the other parent may have to provide evidence of their positive parenting skills.
The Draper Law Office has attorneys who are experienced with helping clients with child custody and parenting time issues and can help. Call 407.846.0075 today or go to DraperLawOffice.com to set up your free, no-obligation consultation in one of their three locations: St. Cloud, Kissimmee, and Orlando.

HEALTH
Ashlee Wright, MDA, RD, LD/N Outpatient Registered Dietitian Orlando Health
Overhauling your diet sounds daunting, right? But small tweaks can make a lasting difference in your health and nutrition. These five changes — plus tips on how to achieve them — can help you score quick improvements in how you feel and give you the confidence to try for even bigger changes over time.
Eat More Fiber
If you’re only going to try one thing on this list, make it adding more fiber — it’s easier than you think. Look at a list of high-fiber foods — odds are, you’ll find things there that you already love (for example raspberries and blackberries, which each pack 8 grams of fiber per cup). Increasing fruits and veggies you already like is as simple as adding them to your grocery list more frequently.
Why does fiber matter? It’s often associated with improved digestion — a big plus for anybody who has issues there — but it also helps with blood-sugar control and weight management. A lot of fiber-rich food is also rich in prebiotics, which helps to feed the “good” bacteria in our gut. A word of caution: Go slowly. The goal is 25 grams of fiber a day — most Americans don’t get anywhere near that, and if you add that much in a hurry you may feel bloated and uncomfortable while your body adjusts. Instead aim to add about 5 grams a week until you reach the recommended amount.
Easy ways to start: Switch from white bread or pasta to whole wheat. For picky eaters, try the middle ground of breads and pastas with fiber added that don’t taste quite so wheaty.
Drink More Water
We know, we know — many people don’t like the taste of water. But being wellhydrated improves brain and digestive function, maintains your skin’s elasticity and keeps blood sugar better controlled (because it makes your blood more dilute and the sugars less concentrated than if you are dehydrated). You don’t have to guzzle from a jug — refilling a small cup multiple times a day can seem more doable at first. Try a bottle with a built-in infuser where you can add fresh fruit to flavor the water.

Hot Car Awareness: Life-saving tips to keep children safe in scorching temperatures
In just 10 minutes, the temperature of a parked vehicle can rise 20 degrees. The crack of a window, even by inches, is no match to combat the rising heat. This heat can be deadly, especially for children because their body temperatures rise five times faster than adults.
Although it may be hard to believe, children can easily be left behind in the car when parents are distracted, rushing, multi-tasking or have a change in routine. This is especially true during the summer months when kids are out of school and may have a different caretaker or driver.
