Summer driving season off to a roaring start; Florida gas prices jump 10 cents, highest since May
Florida gas prices jumped an average of 10 cents per gallon last week. Sunday’s state average of $3.46 per gallon is the most expensive daily average price since mid-May. Osceola County drivers are seeing average prices a penny higher at $3.47, while the national average is higher at $3.59 per gallon of regular unleaded.
“Summer hasn’t officially begun, but the driving season is off to a roaring start,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Gasoline demand figures from the past few weeks have been stronger than what we saw during this same time last year. That has contributed to volatility at the gas pump, which is perfectly normal this time of year. The good news for drivers is that oil prices remain low. As long as that’s the case, the state average should remain below this year’s high of $3.72 per gallon.”

Osceola County celebrates ambitious road development plan with Bill Beck Boulevard ribbon cutting
On Wednesday morning, the official opening of Bill Beck Boulevard took place in Osceola County with a ribbon cutting led by Chairwoman Viviana Janer, signifying the completion of the initial project within the county’s most expansive road construction program to date.
As part of a comprehensive initiative known as “Osceola Roads,” Bill Beck Boulevard, in conjunction with four additional roads, is currently undergoing enhancements facilitated by leveraging the refinancing of the Osceola Parkway. This ambitious endeavor, a collaborative effort between the County and its partners, encompasses a substantial investment exceeding $2 billion.
“This occasion is the result of a bold move we made back in 2019 when we launched the largest road building program in Osceola County history,” Osceola Commission Chairwoman Janer said. “Our collective vision to enhance mobility and safety on our congested roads is moving forward, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. This is important as more and more people are realizing that Osceola County is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. We are ready to meet the demand and be first to what’s next.”

Tohopekaliga’s Nikko Martell to Take Over Kowboys Baseball Program
An anticipated exhaustive search for the right candidate to replace retiring Osceola baseball coach Scott Birchler lasted just a few days, as Kowboys Athletics Director Rick Tribit named former Tohopekaliga skipper Nikko Martell to the post on Tuesday afternoon.
“When he applied for the job I was intrigued by the possibility,” Tribit said. “From my days at Winter Springs, I know how difficult it can be to start a new program – especially in baseball where you are often behind the eight ball in terms of facilities, equipment, resources and even players. Nikko has done a fantastic job of building the program at Tohopekaliga. In a very short period of time, he not only transformed the Tigers into a competitive program but a winning one.”
Entering his 11th year as a high school coach, Martell spent five years as an assistant coach at Gateway. When Tohopekaliga opened for 2018-19 school year, Martell became the first head baseball coach. A 4-15 initial season was followed by a 3-4 Covid year and a 5-12 mark in 2020-21.
He posted his first winning season in 2022 with a 10-9 season before winning a school record 12 games last season. That achievement — combined with the culture he created — earned Martell the prestigious “Mike Fields Distinguished Leadership Award.” Named after the former St. Cloud and Harmony baseball coaching legend, the award recognizes athletic achievement, sportsmanship and community service. Under Martell, Tiger baseball players and staff volunteered to work numerous campus events, including handling parking duties and interacting with campus visitors.
For the past couple of years Martell has organized and run the XT Preseason Classic, an honorary baseball tournament to remember his friend Xavier Torres; he also works closely with the Latinos in Action, helping create a Roberto Clemente Community Service Award for high school athletes who do volunteer work inside the community.

Watch the weather, wait to water
The Southwest Florida Water Management District is encouraging residents who irrigate their lawns to take advantage of the upcoming summer rainy season and “watch the weather, wait to water.”
During the summer months of June, July, August and September, yards need no more than ½ to ¾ inch of water every two to three days. If your lawn has received enough water from rainfall, turn off the irrigation system and turn it back on when needed. The simplest way to determine if your yard needs water is to look for these visual clues:
• Grass blades are folded in half lengthwise on at least one-third of your yard.
• Grass blades appear blue-gray.
• Grass blades do not spring back, leaving footprints on the lawn for several minutes after walking on it.

Orlando Health: Probiotic and prebiotic supplements: do they work – and are they safe?
Touted as a way to combat the effects of a poor diet and stress, prebiotics and probiotics are the latest buzzwords when talking about a healthy gut, or your microbiome. You get these microorganisms in many of the foods you eat, but more and more people are turning to supplements.
Do you get the same benefit from supplements –and are they safe?
What Are Probiotics and Prebiotics?
The human gut has 100 trillion of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, which is 10 times more than the total number of cells of the human body. These microorganisms start colonizing our digestive tract from the moment we are born and together they are called the microbiome.
The gut microbiome plays a major role in the fine balance between health and sickness, providing vital functions by protecting against bad bacteria, assisting in the intake of nutrients and fat from food, as well as regulating your bowel movement and immune system function.

NHTSA proposes mandatory utomatic emergency braking systems for US vehicles
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has put forward a rule proposal that would mandate the installation of automatic emergency braking systems on “nearly all” cars and light trucks in the United States. The proposed rule is expected to dramatically reduce crashes associated with pedestrians and rear-end crashes.
NHTSA projects that this proposed rule, if finalized, would save at least 360 lives a year and reduce injuries by at least 24,000 annually. In addition, these AEB systems would result in significant reductions in property damage caused by rear-end crashes. Many crashes would be avoided altogether, while others would be less destructive.

Draper Law: What to know about parking lot accidents
Parking lots can be tricky for drivers to navigate. Whether you’re at a grocery store, restaurant, doctor’s office, apartment complex, concert or sports venue, or school, getting in and out of a parking lot can be tricky due to the sheer number of cars and pedestrians in the area.
Many of these accidents are caused by distracted driving. The good news is that these crashes are often at low speeds, so the injuries involved are not typically too bad.
Parking lots are often crowded, making accidents likely. If you have been involved in an accident, the Kissimmee auto accident lawyers at Draper Law Office can help you gather evidence and recover compensation for the losses you have suffered. To schedule a free consultation, call (407) 743-6628 or fill out the online form.

FAMILY LAW
Draper Law: Showing positive parenting
When parents of minor children divorce, it can be several years before their involvement with the court will end. Ideally, both parties will abide by their thoughtfully created parenting agreement and make changes which support their children’s wellbeing. However, as time passes and circumstances change, it is not uncommon for parents to disagree about what is in the best interest of their kids. A parent may also claim the other does not have good parenting abilities and seek to make legal changes to the parenting plan. In this situation, the other parent may have to provide evidence of their positive parenting skills.
The Draper Law Office has attorneys who are experienced with helping clients with child custody and parenting time issues and can help. Call 407.846.0075 today or go to DraperLawOffice.com to set up your free, no-obligation consultation in one of their three locations: St. Cloud, Kissimmee, and Orlando.

Orlando Health: 5 tips to start working out again
It’s easy to miss a few days at the gym, but that can sometimes stretch into weeks or months. You vow to return but struggle to make the commitment. You’re not alone. Many people find it hard to resume working out once they’ve fallen out of their routine. Luckily, there are steps you can take to get you back to the gym.
Habit and Routine Hold Us Back
Humans are creatures of habit, and we get comfortable with our days unfolding in a predictable way. Even if we used to hit the gym regularly, it can be hard to break out of our current comfort zone and go back to our old routine or try a new workout.
We are also very good at rationalizing behavior and coming up with reasons why we can’t do something.
When it comes to getting back to the gym, we may tell ourselves we don’t have time, or that we’re too out of shape and will be sore for the rest of the week if we attempt to exercise.
We may feel embarrassed about the way we look and worry that others at the gym will judge us. Concerns about contagious illnesses may make us anxious about working out close to other people. In short, you don’t have to try very hard to convince yourself you’re better off not going back to the gym.
With so many mental roadblocks in place, many people choose the path of least resistance and simply stay home.
1. Find Your ‘Why’
When it comes to motivating yourself to work out, it helps to come up with concrete reasons why you want to do it. Maybe you want to lower your cholesterol or blood pressure. Maybe you’re among the one in three Americans with prediabetes, and your healthcare provider has suggested exercise to prevent full-blown diabetes. Maybe you want to have the energy to keep up with your kids or grandkids.

100 deadliest days for teen drivers have begun
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and a dangerous time of year for young drivers. Nationwide, more than 30 percent of deaths involving teen drivers occur during what’s called the “100 Deadliest Days” – a period that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
“Summer is historically a dangerous time for teen drivers,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Now that school is out, teens will spend more time on the road, often driving with friends at odd hours of the day and night. Because of their inexperience, teens are more susceptible to dangerous driving behaviors – like speeding, driving distracted, and not wearing a safety belt. AAA urges parents to model safe driving behavior and reinforce safe driving habits with their teen drivers to help keep them safe this summer.”
