Positively Osceola is blessed to partner with organizations and leaders in the community that are focused on providing solutions to challenges in and around the Osceola County community. Just last year, we saw an overall increase of 36%, and Osceola County alone saw a 27% increase. These numbers are devastating and indicate a growing problem that cannot be ignored.

Families experiencing housing instability face numerous challenges, including financial hardship, poor health outcomes, and limited access to essential services. This is where Hope Partnership steps in. With your support over the last year, we have successfully assisted families to obtain stable housing despite the obstacles. This year, the Hope Partnership team has already ended homelessness for 126 heartbeats, including Emily and her family.

Half of all passenger wehicle occupants who die in a crash are not buckled up, click it or ticket!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration kicked off its annual Click It or Ticket campaign today to encourage drivers and passengers to buckle up, reminding everyone that seat belts save lives.

State and local law enforcement agencies nationwide will work together during a heightened enforcement period from May 22 through June 4 to protect drivers and passengers from the risks associated with riding in a vehicle unbelted.

“Putting on your seat belt only takes two seconds, but it can save your life,” Chief Counsel Carlson said. “Your seat belt is your best protection against serious or fatal injuries in a crash – and wearing your seat belt is also the law in most states. Whether you’re in the front seat or the back, use your seat belt on every trip, every time.”

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” continues through May as members of the community “walk on the Shingle Creek trail” to experience the beauty and history of Osceola County, while staying healthy, and possibly win some great prizes! The event’s feature sponsor is Kissimmee Utility Authority!

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” encourages the community to live a healthy lifestyle while building awareness of Osceola History’s two museums, Pioneer Village, located at 2491 Babb Road, and the Welcome Center & History Museum, located at 4155 West Vine Street, in Kissimmee.

During “Walk Away May” participants check in at Pioneer Village or the Welcome Center & History Museum to get their “Walk Away May” passport stamped, then begin their walk between museums. At the end of the month, prizes will be awarded for the most stamps or for being part of the experience.

The American Health Association was the first to introduce National Walking Day in 2007 to promote a healthy lifestyle. The Association organizes events to encourage people to walk for at least half an hour. Great seaosn ends for Celebration Storm volleyball, Harmony’s Drea Thompson earns all-state in track

An outstanding season came to an end for the Celebration boys’ volleyball team in the state championship tournament, as they dropped a heartbreaking five-set decision to #2 ranked Winter Park High School. In other sports, four athletes from the county earned All-State honors in individual events and one county relay team reached the podium at the FHSAA State Track and Field Championship.

FHSAA BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Although its season ended on Friday in the FHSAA State Quarterfinals, there absolute little doubt that the Storm had one of the best teams in Florida this year. Holding their own while playing numerous top 15 teams during the regular season, Celebration (2110) suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to #2 ranked Winter Park (27-3) at the state tournament being held at Polk State College in Winter Haven this past weekend.

The Storm dropped the first set 25-22, but came back to win back-to-back sets by 2522 and 25-17 margins – leaving Celebration just one game short of pulling the upset and advancing to the semifinals. But Winter Park came back with a vengeance, pulling out a three-point win in Set 4 (25-22) before edging the Storm out in the deciding “Race to 15” fifth set, 15-12.

As has been the case all season, senior Darion Graham and junior Diego Rivera led the Storm offense with 23 and 21 kills respectively. Libero Keith Harrison had 29 digs. Cole Colado had 18 kills to lead Winter Park; Jacob Little added three blocks at the net.

“I thought we came out a little nervous and tight in the first set and then we dominated the next two games,” Celebration coach Pedro Davila said. “Unfortunately we could just not close it out. We did not start out on a good foot this year (Celebration lost four of their first five matches) but this team came together and by the end of the season, we were playing with, and beating some of the best teams in the state.”

Osceola County’s Trasportation Summit in Kissimmee sets the stage for future road projects

Osceola County, in collaboration with the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), the Florida Department of Transportation District 5, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, and MetroPlan Orlando, hosted a highly anticipated Transportation Summit on Tuesday morning, May 9, at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The event served as a platform for key government officials, transportation experts, and stakeholders to share insights about ongoing road projects, future plans, and the positive impact these initiatives will have on residents and visitors in and around Osceola County.

Orlando Health: Why Women Get Insomnia and How To Get Better Sleep

Insomnia is a common condition, but women have more trouble sleeping than men. It’s estimated that one in every four women get insomnia, compared with one in every five men. FWC announces 2023 Lionfish challenge to tackle invasive species

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has announced the 2023 Lionfish Challenge, in sponsorship with Zookeeper. As a Florida-based lionfish hunting gear and apparel outfitter, the Zookeeper team is aware of the negative impacts lionfish have caused and want to support the organizations and divers working to fight the lionfish invasion. This year’s tournament shirt was custom-designed and printed by Zookeeper and will be awarded to participants who reach the first prize tier.

The Lionfish Challenge is a free summer-long lionfish tournament open to recreational and commercial competitors of all ages around the state of Florida. There’ been an astounding number of lionfish removed as part of this challenge – more than 165,000. Osceola County Commissioner Brandon Arrington to host drive-thru summertime food distribution

With some families and individuals in our community still experiencing food insecurity, non-profit organizations and local governments are continuing to come together to organize food distribution events to assist those who are in need.

Orlando Health: common cold - or something more serious?

You feel it coming on: itchy eyes, runny nose, a tickle in your throat. Over the next few days, your symptoms progress to include sneezing, congestion, fatigue, cough and a sore throat. Despite your best efforts, it looks like you’ve caught the common cold, and if you’re not attentive it could get worse.

HOW COMMON IS THE COLD?

Colds are a minor viral infection that account for more doctor visits than any other illness. Adults, on average, catch two to four colds a year — kids even more — with most cases reported between September and May.

Highly contagious, colds spread much like the flu, by droplets of fluid or inhaled. The most common cause, rhinovirus, accounts for more than 40 percent of reported cases, usually last less than 10 days and can be treated with symptom relief medications and rest.

If left unchecked however, a cold can progress to more serious illnesses. And sneezing, congestion and sore throat also can be symptoms of other ailments.

• Think it might be the flu? Although both viral in nature, colds differ from the flu, which ramps up faster and includes more severe symptoms such as weakness, chills and body aches.

• Think it might be allergies? Allergies can share symptoms with the common cold, but allergies are noncontagious responses of your immune system to an allergen, often seasonal and controllable by antihistamines.
