Nielsen graduates Valencia College at 15, focuses on cardiac surgeon career

On May 7, Erika Nielsen walked the commencement stage at Valencia College after earning her associate degree from Valencia College, weeks before she will earn her high school diploma from the Osceola County School for the Arts.

Erika Nielsen may be young, but at 15 years old, she has an appetite beyond her years.

Erika has always been hungry to learn more, especially when it came to science. Thanks to her father, who encouraged her to push her boundaries, Erika’s unquenchable thirst for education continues to grow.

Erika started enrolling in college courses in the seventh grade through Florida Virtual School. She completed college algebra 1 and then during the summer of seventh grade, she completed college algebra 2 and geometry within the same semester. While Erika was in her eighth-grade year, Covid-19 impacted her courses and she became a fully online, full-time, Valencia College student — all while still in middle school.

“I found the courses easy so I always asked what the next step was, what more can I do,” said Erika.

Erika said she found the idea of challenging herself “interesting” and “fun.”

The 151st Silver Spurs Rodeo will hit the dirt hard in June for two action-filled rodeos. Fans will be treated to seven of rodeo’s traditional events during the largest professional rodeo east of the Mississippi: bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, women’s barrel racing, steer wrestling and team roping.

Returning to the June rodeo are the junior barrel racing and junior bull riding events, starring teenagers kicking off their rodeo careers at Silver Spurs Arena! Plus, everyone’s favorite during the performance, mutton bustin’ (also known as sheep racing)!

42.3 million Americans expected to travel for Memorial Day weekend

AAA projects 42.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend*, a 7% increase over 2022. This year, 2.7 million more people will travel for the unofficial start of summer compared to last year, a sign of what’s to come in the months ahead.

“This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation. Florida Governor Desantis sending support, deploys soldiers to Texas border

Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Tuesday that Florida is deploying assets to Texas to help secure their southern border. According to the governor, Florida has over 1,100 assets and resources available including:

• 101 Florida Highway Patrol Troopers

• 200 Florida Department of Law Enforcement Officers, in teams of 40

• 20 Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officers

• 800 Florida National Guard Soldiers

• 20 Emergency Management Personnel – including radio technicians, logisticians, mechanics and planners

• Five available fixed wing aircraft with monitoring equipment and downlink capabilities with two aviation crew teams

First tropical wave of the season emerges off the coast of Africa

The National Hurricane Center reported on Monday that the first tropical wave of the season emerged off the coast of Africa. The tropical wave is the first among approximately 60 waves that originate over North Africa annually, according to the the National Hurricane Center.

With the hurricane season approaching in a few weeks, the NHC has initiated its daily Tropical Weather Outlook for the Atlantic basin, which will be issued four times a day. Researchers at Colorado State University anticipate that this season may be slightly below-average. In their prediction released in April, they projected six hurricanes, with two of them potentially reaching Category 3, 4, or 5, and a total of 13 named storms for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season.

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” begins Monday May 1 as members of the community “walk on the Shingle Creek trail” to experience the beauty and history of Osceola County, while staying healthy, and possibly win some great prizes! The event’s feature sponsor is Kissimmee Utility Authority!

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” encourages the community to live a healthy lifestyle while building awareness of Osceola History’s two museums, Pioneer Village, located at 2491 Babb Road, and the Welcome Center & History Museum, located at 4155 West Vine Street, in Kissimmee.

During “Walk Away May” participants check in at Pioneer Village or the Welcome Center & History Museum to get their “Walk Away May” passport stamped, then begin their walk between museums. At the end of the month, prizes will be awarded for the most stamps or for being part of the experience.

The American Health Association was the first to introduce National Walking Day in 2007 to promote a healthy lifestyle. State tournament bound Celebration Storm sweep Horizon for regional title

For the fourth time in school history, the Celebration’s boy volleyball team will make a trip to the FHSAA State Tournament. The Storm earned their way to the championship with a straight-set sweep over Horizon, winning 25-23, 25-15, 29-27 on Tuesday night in a regional final.

Senior captain Darion Graham was the star of the match, as he came up with 28 kills, including 12 in the final set. He was more important than ever in the match, as several Storm players were battling shoulder injuries.

“He’s been in our program a long time and was always a special player, but he has really blossomed this year a both a star player and a team leader,” Coach Pedro Davila said. “Because of injuries tonight, we were setting the ball to him on almost every play and he still carried us.”

The Storm (21-9), who entered regional play ranked 23rd in the state will be seeded seventh of eight teams for the championship. Celebration will meet second-ranked Winter Park at 4 p.m. Friday in a quarterfinal game at Polk State College in Winter Haven. Winter Park (21-3) and the Storm met in the season-opener on Mar. 6, with the Wildcats winning in four sets.

Tuesday’s match with Horizon was a lot closer than the sweep indicated. Horizon came into the contest with a five-match winning streak – including a three-game road sweep of 2022 state-qualifier Tampa Bay HEAT in the regional semifinal.

In fact, it was so close that Celebration had to fight off set points in both the first and third sets. The first game went back-and-forth but Horizon used 5-0 run late in the game to take a 24-21 lead. But the Storm would rally behind two kills by Graham and Keith Harrison would serve out the game including an ace on the game-clinching point.

Trailing 11-10 in the second set, Celebration would go on runs of seven and three points to push the lead out to 20-12. Graham again led the way with seven kills in the game; while Harrison had two more aces and played spectacular defense in the back row – making numerous digs to thwart Horizon attacks.

Osceola County’s Trasportation Summit in Kissimmee sets the stage for future road projects

Osceola County, in collaboration with the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), the Florida Department of Transportation District 5, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, and MetroPlan Orlando, hosted a highly anticipated Transportation Summit on Tuesday morning, May 9, at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The event served as a platform for key government officials, transportation experts, and stakeholders to share insights about ongoing road projects, future plans, and the positive impact these initiatives will have on residents and visitors in and around Osceola County.

St. Cloud Council approves two Hopkins Park area projects

St. Cloud’s City Council approved two large projects during Thursday’s council meeting focused on bringing improvements to the River Road/Hopkins Park area.

The council voted to accept a $1,051.360 Community Project Funding grant for the construction of a centralized sewer system to replace aging, privately-owned septic sewer systems at homes along River Road, Bibbens Street, and Mency Street near Hopkins Park. Grant funds will be used to cover the cost for residents to connect to Toho’s sewer system. Once connected to the sewer system, residents will be responsible for paying the monthly utility bill for sewer.

You feel it coming on: itchy eyes, runny nose, a tickle in your throat. Over the next few days, your symptoms progress to include sneezing, congestion, fatigue, cough and a sore throat. Despite your best efforts, it looks like you’ve caught the common cold, and if you’re not attentive it could get worse.

HOW COMMON IS THE COLD?

Colds are a minor viral infection that account for more doctor visits than any other illness. Adults, on average, catch two to four colds a year — kids even more — with most cases reported between September and May.

Highly contagious, colds spread much like the flu, by droplets of fluid or inhaled. The most common cause, rhinovirus, accounts for more than 40 percent of reported cases, usually last less than 10 days and can be treated with symptom relief medications and rest.

If left unchecked however, a cold can progress to more serious illnesses. And sneezing, congestion and sore throat also can be symptoms of other ailments.

• Think it might be the flu? Although both viral in nature, colds differ from the flu, which ramps up faster and includes more severe symptoms such as weakness, chills and body aches.
