Saddle up for the 151st Silver Spurs Rodeo, bucking into the Silver Spurs Arena June 2nd and 3rd

The 151st Silver Spurs Rodeo will hit the dirt hard in June for two action-filled rodeos. Fans will be treated to seven of rodeo’s traditional events during the largest professional rodeo east of the Mississippi: bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, women’s barrel racing, steer wrestling and team roping.

Returning to the June rodeo are the junior barrel racing and junior bull riding events, starring teenagers kicking off their rodeo careers at Silver Spurs Arena! Plus, everyone’s favorite during the performance, mutton bustin’ (also known as sheep racing)!

City of Kissimmee names Tom Tomerlin as new Economic Development director

The City of Kissimmee has announced the selection of Tom Tomerlin as its new Director of Economic Development. City Manager Mike Steigerwald appointed Tomerlin to serve as a liaison between the City and the businesses in the area after competing against applicants from across the nation.

Officials confirm fatality in overnight Kissimmee house fire

A tragic fire took place in Kissimmee early Tuesday, resulting in the loss of one man’s life and causing another man to need medical treatment for smoke inhalation. The house fire erupted shortly before 1 a.m. at a home on Hidden Springs Circle, near Waters Edge Drive.

Authorities have said that the fire is currently believed to be accidental. Efforts are underway to determine the specific area within the house where the fire originated as emergency crews diligently work to uncover the details.

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” begins Monday May 1 as members of the community “walk on the Shingle Creek trail” to experience the beauty and history of Osceola County, while staying healthy, and possibly win some great prizes! The event’s feature sponsor is Kissimmee Utility Authority!

Osceola History’s “Walk Away May” encourages the community to live a healthy lifestyle while building awareness of Osceola History’s two museums, Pioneer Village, located at 2491 Babb Road, and the Welcome Center & History Museum, located at 4155 West Vine Street, in Kissimmee.

During “Walk Away May” participants check in at Pioneer Village or the Welcome Center & History Museum to get their “Walk Away May” passport stamped, then begin their walk between museums. At the end of the month, prizes will be awarded for the most stamps or for being part of the experience.

The American Health Association was the first to introduce National Walking Day in 2007 to promote a healthy lifestyle. Although the school year is rapidly winding down, a lot of moving parts remain for the athletic programs in Osceola’s eight public high schools. Here is a rundown of what is happening this week in county high school sports:

BOY’S VOLLEYBALL

Coming off a dominating three-set sweep of Dr. Phillips (25-18, 25-17, 25-20), Celebration returns to action Tuesday night when they host Winter Garden’s Horizon Hawks in an FHSAA Regional Final on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the State Championship Tournament this weekend at Polk State College in Winter Haven. The Storm (20-9 this season) last advanced to the state tournament in 2019, when they defeated Apopka for the Regional Championship before bowing out to Archbishop McCarthy in 5-set quarterfinals – finishing their season with a 24-3 record. “On paper, we should be favored on Tuesday, but you never know in the playoffs,” Celebration coach Pedro Davila noted. “The most important thing will be to come out with intensity and establish our rhythm early.” You can read about Celebration’s big win against Dr. Phillips here (https://www.positivelyosceola.com/ celebration-storm-one-win-away-from-state-tournament-in-boys-volleyball)

SIGNING DAY AT OSCEOLA

Osceola High School will hold a signing ceremony on Monday afternoon. Five athletes, including Quanaya Jenkins (Girls Track/Field – Florida Memorial), Nyla Rocke (Girls Wrestling – North Iowa Area Community College), Davian Rivera (Wrestling –North Iowa Area Community College), Keira Suro (Girls Wrestling – Friends University), and Daniela Tabora Contreras (Girls Wrestling- Friends University) will sign their scholarship papers at the event. “We’ve had a great year this year and singing days like this one are the big payoff for the student-athletes and their families,” Osceola AD Rick Tribit said. “Monday’s signing brings to 30 the number of 2022-23 OHS Studentathletes who will get the opportunity to chase their dreams at the next level and is a true testament to the hard work that our teachers, coaches, and counselors have put in coaching and mentoring them.”

Deputy Chief Betty Holland takes over as City of Kissimmee’s 29th Police Chief

Betty Holland has taken over the role of Kissimmee Chief of Police, Kissimmee City Manager Mike Steigerwald announced on Friday. Chief Holland began her term on Saturday, April 29, and will be sworn as the 29th Police Chief of the City of Kissimmee during the next city commission meeting on Tuesday, May 2.

“I’m pleased to welcome Betty Holland as our next Chief of Police, one of the City’s most critical leadership positions,” said Steigerwald. “Her 35 years of law enforcement experience, including the past 5 years as a key member of Chief O’Dell’s leadership team, have well positioned her to take our police department to the next level. Given the growth of our police force in recent years, I am especially excited about Chief Holland’s ideas for the continued development of our police force. I believe her prior experience leading the Polk County Sheriff’s training academy will be of great benefit in preparing future leaders within our agency.”

New Florida Panter license plate features famous female and her kitten

The Protect the Panther License Plate will soon have a new design featuring a stunning photograph taken by photographer Carlton Ward in 2018 of a now famous female and her kitten.

The adult female panther pictured on the plate is well known because she is the first female documented north of the Caloosahatchee River since 1973. St. Cloud Council approves two Hopkins Park area projects

St. Cloud’s City Council approved two large projects during Thursday’s council meeting focused on bringing improvements to the River Road/Hopkins Park area.

The council voted to accept a $1,051.360 Community Project Funding grant for the construction of a centralized sewer system to replace aging, privately-owned septic sewer systems at homes along River Road, Bibbens Street, and Mency Street near Hopkins Park. Grant funds will be used to cover the cost for residents to connect to Toho’s sewer system. Once connected to the sewer system, residents will be responsible for paying the monthly utility bill for sewer.

You feel it coming on: itchy eyes, runny nose, a tickle in your throat. Over the next few days, your symptoms progress to include sneezing, congestion, fatigue, cough and a sore throat. HOW COMMON IS THE COLD?

Colds are a minor viral infection that account for more doctor visits than any other illness. Adults, on average, catch two to four colds a year — kids even more — with most cases reported between September and May.

Highly contagious, colds spread much like the flu, by droplets of fluid or inhaled. The most common cause, rhinovirus, accounts for more than 40 percent of reported cases, usually last less than 10 days and can be treated with symptom relief medications and rest.

If left unchecked however, a cold can progress to more serious illnesses. And sneezing, congestion and sore throat also can be symptoms of other ailments.
