Empowering Futures: Osceola County’s Unwavering Commitment to Education Through Osceola Prosper

In a move that underscores a steadfast commitment to education and community prosperity, Osceola County has once again cast a unanimous vote in favor of the transformative Osceola Prosper program. During Monday’s County Commission meeting, all five commissioners earmarked an impressive $8.3 million to continue fueling this initiative that has already begun reshaping the educational landscape for local students.

Launched in 2022, Osceola Prosper emerged as a beacon of hope and opportunity for high school graduates across the county. This pioneering program offers graduates from public, charter, private, and homeschool settings a unique chance to pursue further education without the burden of financial constraints. Participants have the flexibility to attend Valencia College for degree programs or accelerated skills training or to opt for the specialized programs at Osceola Technical College. The objective is clear: to equip Osceola’s youth with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

Originally funded through federal allocations received under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES), the program’s undeniable success has prompted a strategic shift in its funding mechanism. Moving forward, Osceola Prosper will primarily draw from the county’s general funds, supplemented by a residual pool of CARES funds. This transition reflects the program’s sustainability and the county’s dedication to investing in its future leaders.

Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital’s Dr. Sarat Sabharwal performed the hospital’s first laparoscopic nephrectomy this month, a milestone for patient care.

Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer. Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Orlando Health: Choose Correct Shoes To Avoid Sports Injury

START WITH THE RIGHT SIZE

The first step to avoid a foot or ankle injury while playing sports is choosing the appropriate shoe. But there are so many options that it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

The right athletic shoe can help boost your performance and prevent injury, specifically to the foot and ankle, providing both support and comfort.

Wearing the correct size shoe is crucial. While this may seem intuitive, you might be surprised by how many student athletes are not wearing shoes that fit correctly. Parents tend to buy shoes in a size too large for their children because they outgrow them quickly.

Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Orlando Health: Raising Health Literacy, Improving Health Outcomes

Health information can overwhelm even those with advanced medical knowledge and literacy skills. Medical science is constantly evolving. Even doctors with specialties may need to expand their knowledge to best understand a condition they may be facing. It can be particularly difficult for patients to retain information when facing frightening news.

This is why health literacy is so important. Health literacy involves the degree to which patients can understand and process what’s happening with their health. It has nothing to do with education, reading level or socioeconomic status, but rather it’s about empowering patients to know what questions to ask and providing them with information in a format they can understand.
