Honor and Valor: Celebrating Kissimmee’s Finest at the Annual Police Awards The Kissimmee Police Department’s Annual Award Ceremony, an event celebrating the exemplary service and dedication of its members, was held at the Kissimmee Civic Center on Wednesday. The ceremony commenced with a presentation of colors by the Kissimmee Police Department Color Guard, setting a tone of respect and solemnity.

The atmosphere was elevated by a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem sung by Tiffany Jeffers, followed by an invocation delivered by KPD Chaplain Efrain Fernandez, which imbued the event with a sense of unity and purpose.

James Napier, serving as the master of ceremonies, steered the evening’s proceedings, introducing KPD Chief Betty Holland. Chief Holland extended a warm welcome to all attendees, acknowledging their collective efforts in fostering safety and community within Kissimmee. NEWS Bucking Broncs to Barrel Racing: 80 Years of Silver Spurs Rodeo Legacy Hits the Dirt Again This Weekend!

The Silver Spurs Rodeo is celebrating a monumental milestone, its 80th anniversary, with a year-long celebration honoring its enduring legacy and deep-rooted tradition in Osceola County.

Since the first chute opened on July 4th, 1944, the Silver Spurs Rodeo has become an iconic event, symbolizing the spirit of the American West and the close-knit fabric of its fans, and founding members.

As the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi River, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), the Silver Spurs Rodeo’s history is intertwined with that of Osceola County, preserving the traditions of rodeo, ranching, and citrus production that define the region. Beyond entertainment, the Silver Spurs Riding Club has continually given back to the community, contributing nearly $100,000 to non-profits since 2020 alone.

Gateway Panthers to Face Lake Wales For District Crown After ‘Battling’ and Beating Lake Region 54-35 As expected, top-seeded Gateway (17-6) will host second seeded Lake Wales (16-9) on Friday night for the FHSAA Class 5A, District 7 championship. But the 54-35 semifinal win on Wednesday against Lake Region did not come without some controversy.

That game was marred by a series of flagrant fouls on Lake Region that caused officials to halt the game with 51 seconds still remaining on the clock.

Gateway was sent to the locker room and stayed there until the opponents exited the building.

“Really hate to see that type of behavior in any game and it was a hard way to see the contest end,” Gateway coach Justin Marino said. “But the officials absolutely did the right thing. There’s no place for that type of play and you would not want to see any players hurt.”

NEWS Find Your Furr-Ever Valentine at Osceola County Animal Services, During February’s $14 Adoption Promotion Osceola County District 3 Commissioner Brandon Arrington’s love of animals is manifesting with a month-long $14 adoption promotion with Osceola County Animal Services.

Arrington and his wife, Kristen, are proud parents of a 10-year-old pit bull they adopted. Brody is a happy dog. He wiggles his tail when he’s excited, which is often the case when he and his dad go for rides on Arrington’s skateboard. As Brody ages, he’s inclined to enjoy more relaxed activities such as long – and slow – walks. He’s partial to belly rubs and eating. Especially eating, Arrington notes.

Brody has brought such joy into the couple’s life that Arrington hopes that the FURREVER promotion in February will encourage other residents to help shelter pets find a forever home.

NEWS Osceola County’s Call to Action: Opioid Task Force Survey Deadline Extension Offers More Time for Vital Community Feedback

The Osceola Opioid Task Force, a collaborative initiative that will utilize funds from the settlement with the country’s largest pharmacies regarding the Opioid Crisis to address the complex challenges posed by opioid misuse within the community, has extended the deadline for community organizations to provide input on how best to battle the Opioid Crisis.

The Task Force, formed in 2023, is conducting a survey of community organizations currently fighting opioid misuse to assess which organizations may need more funding to do their work more effectively, or where there may currently be gaps in available services that settlement funds could be used to fill. The results of the survey will help direct where settlement funds could be allocated in Osceola County.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Voters: Elections Office Engages Osceola County High School Seniors in Voter Registration The Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Office is visiting high schools in and around Osceola County helping seniors to register to vote.

This initiative is focused on empowering senior students by providing them with the resources and guidance needed to register to vote. Through this educational outreach, the elections office is not only facilitating the registration process, but also fostering civic engagement among the youth of Osceola County.

Every year outreach staff visits each public high school in the county one to two times to reach all their senior students. At these visits, elections outreach staff help eligible students to register to vote and educate all students on how, when, where and why to vote. Students wishing to register to vote need to know either their Florida Driver License/Permit/ID card number or the last 4 digits of their Social Security Number.

Orlando Health Network launched innovative care models in 2023 Orlando Health Network launched various innovative health care models in 2023 to enhance the quality of patient care. Since its inception in 2013, the network has generated more than $165 million in savings to patients, payers, employers and taxpayers, according to the Clinically Integrated Network Value Report 2023.

The recently released 2023 report details how the network, part of the Orlando Health hospital system, launched multiple initiatives during 2023 to ensure that the nearly 300,000 patients it serves in Central and West Florida receive timely, efficient, and effective medical care from more than 6,600 multispecialty providers.

“Our 2023 Clinically Integrated Network Value Report showcases our myriad innovative care models, clinical and quality programs, and strong performance across value-based arrangements in the past year,” said Erik Walker, MD, board chairman, Orlando Health Network. “Now serving nearly 300,000 patients, Orlando Health Network achieved notable accomplishments for the tenth year in a row through the thoughtful collaboration with our dedicated providers and health system partners. On behalf of our network, I am once again humbled to share these efforts and their accompanying achievements.”

Initiatives launched by the network in 2023 include the Orlando Health Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers, which are designed to effectively manage the post-hospitalization and advanced pharmacy needs of patients.

New Florida ‘Protect the Panther’ specialty license plate now available to Florida motorists A new Protect the Panther license plate is now available to Florida motorists, and features a striking photograph taken by Carlton Ward in 2018 of the first female panther documented north of the Caloosahatchee River since 1973, along with her kitten. The new license plate can be purchased at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles or by checking with your local tax collector office for availability.

The FWC is reminding the public that purchasing a Protect the Panther license plate isn’t the only way motorists can help panthers, drivers can also help by following all posted speed limits, particularly in panther zones, which are in place in several counties across south Florida to coincide with areas where panthers are known to cross. Panther speed zones help protect both Florida panthers and motorists from vehicle collisions and potential injury.

St. Cloud Hopes to Keep Harmony From Orange Belt Conference All-Sports Award 4-Peat Winning the Orange Belt Conference All-Sports Award has become a huge source of pride for Harmony High School. Awarded annually to the Osceola school whose team accumulates the most points across all sports over the school year, the award has sat in the Longhorns’ trophy case for the last three years and 11 times since the school opened 19 years ago.

“It represents the fact that you are committed to having a total athletic program,” Harmony Athletics Director Dan Kerr says. “Our success in not only based on the fact that we have had a lot of dedicated, tremendous athletes at this school, but that we’ve also been fortunate in hiring and retaining a lot of talented coaches over the years.”

Upon completion of the boys and girls OBC wrestling tournament last weekend, all fall and winter sports are now in the books and Harmony finds itself once again sitting on the top of the standings with 95 points; followed closely by St. Cloud (90) and Celebration (82). Tohopekaliga (74) remained within striking distance.

Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer.

Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Orlando Health: More Younger Adults Getting Cancer

After making significant progress in the fight against cancer over the past few decades, younger Americans, particularly women, are becoming more vulnerable.

Cancers among people younger than age 50 have risen, with the largest increases among those age 30 to 39, according to a recent study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The increases in early-onset cancers (those diagnosed before age 50) were particularly notable with gastrointestinal, endocrine and breast cancers. From 2010 to 2019, the rate of early-onset cancers rose by nearly 1 percent. But among the 30-39 age group, the increase was about 19 percent.

Orlando Health: Don’t Make These 5 Mistakes in Emergency Situations Hurricanes, swimming pools and extreme heat are part of daily life, especially in warmer climates. They’re also responsible for many ER visits every year, all of which can be prevented with a little planning and extra attention paid to safety.

Here are five mistakes you should avoid during an emergency.

SAY YES TO THE AMBULANCE You may think that driving yourself or a family member to the ER is quicker and cheaper while posing no risk, but that’s not the case. Call 911 immediately if you are experiencing: • Acute neurologic symptoms • Trouble speaking • Gait imbalance • Sudden loss of balance • Significant chest pain The difference could mean saving a life. In an ambulance, medics immediately start evaluating you. By the time you arrive at the hospital, your neurological function has already been assessed and the medical team has decided next steps. The medics also start IVs, which further save time. Ambulance drivers choose which hospital they take you to, matching you according to your circumstances. If it’s a stroke, for example, the medics will transport you to the best hospital for stroke care. Should you skip the ambulance and drive to a hospital that is not the best match, you may need a helicopter to then transport you to the right hospital.
