Under the Stars with Ariel: KUA Presents ‘The Little Mermaid (2023)’ at Free Movie in the Park Kissimmee Utility Authority, in partnership with the City of Kissimmee, will host a free Movie in the Park event on Friday, Nov. 3, at the Veterans Lawn of Kissimmee Lakefront Park. The movie event is part of KUA’s annual 6-month Movie in the Park series, held on the first Friday of every month, beginning October through March.

The event will feature the 2023 version of “The Little Mermaid,” shown on a giant 50-foot screen. The movie will also feature closed captioning for the hearing impaired.

Onsite concessions will be available.

Attendees will enjoy KUA’s inflatable Kids Power Zone, a craft station, free popcorn, and prize giveaways. A free photo booth will also include a photo opportunity with Ariel.

The event will be extra special because we are inviting all kids to come dressed up as their favorite characters from the movie: Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder, Ursula – the choice is yours!

Rivalry Week: Soldier City Classic, Battle of Boulevard Highlight Season Finales in Osceola County High School Football

It’s Week 11 and the end of the high school football regular season is upon us, but the county has saved the best for last — as we cap the season with two huge rivalry games on Friday night.

Harmony will face-off against St. Cloud at 7 p.m. on Friday for the famed Brass Bugle trophy in the 19th playing of the Soldier City Classic. The Bulldogs remain hopeful it will be the first game played on the new artificial turf field at Thomas Gannarelli Field. If final approval is not given, the game will be played at Austin Tindall Park.

NEWS Gas prices in Florida are lower than last month and last year, but where are they headed next?

Florida drivers have been experiencing falling prices at the pump with more than a 40-cent drop per gallon over the past month. On Monday, AAA reported that the state average was at $3.22 per gallon of regular unleaded, that’s 13 cents less than a year ago.

However, prices jumped up about 7 cents overnight with the current state average at $3.29 and Osceola drivers paying $3.27 per gallon. The trend has been prices declining, so hopefully last night wasn’t a ‘thing,’ and rising oil prices and the international conflicts don’t start to cause rising prices at the pump.

Osceola Sheriff’s Office Unveils New K9 Partnerships to Heighten Search and Rescue Operations for Missing Persons Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Senior Resource Alliance and Scent Evidence K9 to utilize two new scent discriminate bloodhounds and scent preservation kits to find people more quickly who go missing, Sheriff Marcos Lopez announced Wednesday.

As part of this new partnership, K9 brothers Doc and Luke will be joining the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit, thanks to the Senior Resource Alliance. Doc and Luke were trained by Scent Evidence K9 specially to search and locate missing individuals by using a person’s unique scent.

A Hauntingly Beautiful Affair: Osceola Clerk & Comptroller Kelvin Soto Hosts the Second Annual Halloween Group Wedding The Osceola County Historical Courthouse set the stage for a magical morning of love and union this Halloween, casting an enchanting aura over the ceremony. Among the historic walls, seven couples took part in this extraordinary celebration, with six pairs vowing to stay together “until death do us part,” while one couple reaffirmed their eternal bond during the 10:00 a.m. wedding, vow renewal, and subsequent reception.

The esteemed Kelvin Soto, Esq., Osceola Clerk of the Circuit Court & County Comptroller, presided over the ceremony. The Historic Courthouse underwent a remarkable metamorphosis, evolving into an elegant Halloween wonderland, embellished with cobwebs, pumpkins, and a profusion of black and purple roses.

Guests were treated to a melodic ensemble of Halloween-themed tunes, followed by a delightful reception filled with delectable treats, commemorating their cherished ones.

KUA Seeks Student Art Entries for 2024 Energy Conservation Calendar Kissimmee Utility Authority invites Osceola County students to showcase their artistic expression to promote energy conversation in the utility’s 30th Annual Calendar Art Contest.

The annual contest is open to Osceola County students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade, including public, charter, private, and homeschooled students.

In their entry, students are asked to use crayons, markers, or paints to depict an energy conservation message. A panel of local judges will select the 12 best entries to be used for each calendar month, which will be featured in the utility’s 2024 calendar.

Lady Bulldogs make history with back-2back-2-back state golf appearances For a third straight year, the St. Cloud girls’ golf team is headed to the state golf championships and this time they did not need to wait around for an at-large bid.

The Lady Bulldogs, behind sophomore Karolyna Adams’ two-over par 74, tied Lake Nona for Class 3A, Region 2 golf championship on Tuesday morning.

St. Cloud would lose the regional championship in a playoff, as Lake Nona shot a team-collective even par 20 on the first playoff hole; compared to a one-over par 21 by the Lady Bulldogs. Still, the official second place regional finish earned St. Cloud an automatic spot in the FHSAA State Golf Championships, Nov. 10-11.

Osceola Kowboys Down Titans in Girls Volleyball, Jupiter Up Next in State Playoffs Occasionally a loss can also provide some needed momentum.

Such was the case during Saturday afternoon’s FHSAA Class 7A, Region 2 semifinal, when the Osceola volleyball team used a third game loss to Olympia as incentive to win big in the fourth as the Kowboys advanced to the regional championship game with a 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17 victory over the Titans.

The win propelled the Kowboys (23-6) into a Wednesday evening showdown at Jupiter (24-3), where they will attempt to win their second consecutive regional championship. The Warriors, the region’s top seed, earned their way to the title game with a five-set win over Ft. Pierce Central.

Osceola Kowboys Punch Ticket to Playoffs with District Title Shutout Win Over Tohopekaliga Tigers

For a 17th consecutive year, the Osceola Kowboys are headed to the state football playoffs. They got there on Friday night, beating Tohopekaliga in dominating fashion, 38-0, to claim the Class 4S, District 10 Championship.

“I thought we were just trying to be a little too fancy in the first half,” Osceola Coach Eric Pinellas said about his team that was clinging to a narrow 10-0 at intermission. “Give them some credit, they were running a lot of blitzes and pinching their linebackers from the outside and unfortunately we were running right into that defense. In the second half, we just decided to get physical and run right at them.”

Parkinson’s Support in Action: Orlando Health Advanced Rehabilitation Institute offering free community exercise classes for Parkinson’s patients Local patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease now have access to free fitness classes tailored to their medical needs, thanks to the Orlando Health Advanced Rehabilitation Institute and grant funding from the Parkinson Association of Central Florida. Patients do not need a physician referral to join the classes.

The fitness classes meet every other Monday from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm near the Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute, with Orlando Health neurologic physical therapists providing the exercise instruction. The classes include aerobic exercise, strength training, balance training, and more. Attendees should wear active clothes and bring water. They are also asked to have a care partner attend with them if they require additional physical assistance.

NEWS St. Cloud Mayor Nathan Blackwell Appointed to Florida League of Cities Legislative Committee City of St. Cloud Mayor Nathan Blackwell has been appointed to serve on the Florida League of Cities Legislative Committee as the Tri-County League of Cities representative.

The Legislative Committee reviews the recommended legislative priorities of the League’s five legislative policy committees. Based on this review, the Legislative Committee votes on a proposed Legislative Platform, which is then submitted to the full League membership for consideration and adoption.

Mayor Blackwell also serves on FLC’s Board of Directors, and is the first St. Cloud Council member to do so.

But before you start working out, it helps to know which bone-strengthening exercises deliver the greatest benefit.

Osteoporosis — bone-density loss — affects one in three women older than 50, and one in five men will experience osteoporotic fractures in their lifetimes.

Osteoporosis slowly weakens your bones to the point where they easily break. It’s referred to as a “silent disease” because you often don’t know it’s happening until you break a bone. Osteoporosis commonly causes fractures in the hip, spine and wrist.

WHY WE LOSE BONE MASS As a living tissue, bones continually rebuild themselves to maintain strength. How? Your body breaks down existing bone and then restores it with new bone tissue.

It also helps to understand “the bone turnover cycle.” When you’re young, you build more bone than you lose. But as you age, you start to lose more bone than you build.

For women, bone loss increases after menopause as they lose hormones, causing a precipitous decline in bone mineral density. For men, especially those with low testosterone, osteoporosis usually happens a bit later — generally around age 65 or 70.

The development of osteoporosis is accelerated during this natural aging process and causes the bones to become thinner, more brittle and subject to breaks during a fall.
