Longhorns Clinch FHSAA Class 7A, District 9 girls’ soccer championship in 1-0 Showdown with Celebration

Heading into Tuesday’s night FHSAA Class 7A, District 9 girls’ soccer final, top-seeded Celebration and second-seeded Harmony had surrendered exactly two combined goals in their last 800 minutes of soccer; while going a combined 10-0-0.

So it should come as no surprise that Tuesday night’s final was a low-scoring affair, won by Harmony, 1-0, on a second-half goal by Longhorn freshman forward Jayden Frost. It was the first career game-winner for Frost, who was the smallest and youngest player on the field.

“It was a tough game all night with neither team generating a lot of offense,” Harmony coach Scott Marlega said. “At the end of the day we won a flick off a throw in and the smallest player on the field found the ball at her feet directly in front of the goal and tapped it in. Admittedly, it wasn’t the prettiest or most dramatic goal, but it was what we needed at the time.”

The win lifted the Longhorns to 13-3-0 on the season and will send them into a 7A, Region 3 quarterfinal next week – with the opponent and site yet to be determined.

“They changed the format a couple of years ago and where the district champion is not guaranteed a first round regional home game,” Marlega noted. “So we will have to wait until all district play is over and see where they rank us. Regardless, of who or where we play, I’m extremely proud of this group tonight.”

NEWS KUA to Host Free Movie in the Park Featuring DreamWorks ‘Trolls Band Together’ at Kissimmee’s Lakefront Park Kissimmee Utility Authority, in partnership with the City of Kissimmee, will host a free Movie in the Park event, Friday, Feb. 2 at the Veterans Lawn of Kissimmee Lakefront Park as part of KUA’s annual 6-month Movie in the Park series.

The event will feature DreamWorks ‘Trolls Band Together,’ shown on a giant 50-foot screen.

Activities begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the movie at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. The movie will also feature closed captioning for the hearing impaired.

KUA’s inflatable Kids Power Zone, a craft station, a photo booth, free popcorn, and prize giveaways will all be part of tonight’s free event. Onsite concessions will also be available.

NEWS Empowering Tomorrow’s Voters: Elections Office Engages Osceola County High School Seniors in Voter Registration The Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Office is visiting high schools in and around Osceola County helping seniors to register to vote. This initiative is focused on empowering senior students by providing them with the resources and guidance needed to register to vote. Through this educational outreach, the elections office is not only facilitating the registration process, but also fostering civic engagement among the youth of Osceola County.

Every year outreach staff visits each public high school in the county one to two times to reach all their senior students. At these visits, elections outreach staff help eligible students to register to vote and educate all students on how, when, where and why to vote. Students wishing to register to vote need to know either their Florida Driver License/Permit/ID card number or the last 4 digits of their Social Security Number.

Orlando Health Network launched innovative care models in 2023 Orlando Health Network launched various innovative health care models in 2023 to enhance the quality of patient care. Since its inception in 2013, the network has generated more than $165 million in savings to patients, payers, employers and taxpayers, according to the Clinically Integrated Network Value Report 2023.

The recently released 2023 report details how the network, part of the Orlando Health hospital system, launched multiple initiatives during 2023 to ensure that the nearly 300,000 patients it serves in Central and West Florida receive timely, efficient, and effective medical care from more than 6,600 multispecialty providers.

“Our 2023 Clinically Integrated Network Value Report showcases our myriad innovative care models, clinical and quality programs, and strong performance across value-based arrangements in the past year,” said Erik Walker, MD, board chairman, Orlando Health Network. “Now serving nearly 300,000 patients, Orlando Health Network achieved notable accomplishments for the tenth year in a row through the thoughtful collaboration with our dedicated providers and health system partners. On behalf of our network, I am once again humbled to share these efforts and their accompanying achievements.”

Initiatives launched by the network in 2023 include the Orlando Health Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers, which are designed to effectively manage the post-hospitalization and advanced pharmacy needs of patients.

A Special ‘Baby Delivery’ by St. Cloud Fire Rescue Station 32 Leads to ‘Stork Club Membership Honor Members of St. Cloud Fire Rescue Station 32 are the newest members of a very special club, the Stork Club.

The St. Cloud team earned this honor following their successful assistance in the delivery of a baby on December 3, 2023, while on the way to the hospital.

New Florida ‘Protect the Panther’ specialty license plate now available to Florida motorists A new Protect the Panther license plate is now available to Florida motorists, and features a striking photograph taken by Carlton Ward in 2018 of the first female panther documented north of the Caloosahatchee River since 1973, along with her kitten. The new license plate can be purchased at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles or by checking with your local tax collector office for availability.

The FWC is reminding the public that purchasing a Protect the Panther license plate isn’t the only way motorists can help panthers, drivers can also help by following all posted speed limits, particularly in panther zones, which are in place in several counties across south Florida to coincide with areas where panthers are known to cross. Panther speed zones help protect both Florida panthers and motorists from vehicle collisions and potential injury.

District Soccer, OBC Wrestling Highlight Busy Week in Osceola County High School Sports

District championships will be on the line in both boys’ and girls’ soccer this week, while the Orange Belt Conference Wrestling Championship will be held at Celebration High on Saturday. Add in the final week of regular season in basketball as teams jockey for district seeding and the girls weightlifting regional tournaments and it amounts to a busy week of action for local high school athletes.

Here is a rundown on county sports action this week: SOCCER District soccer tournaments began last week for all eligible schools for both boys and girls teams and after preliminary rounds five county teams are still in contention for district titles.

In Class 6A, District 7 boys action, St. Cloud (12-5-2) was the number two seed behind state power Viera (18-1-0). Weylan Craig’s team opened district play last week with a 2-1 win over East River but saw its season come to a possible end with a loss to powerful #3 Melbourne, 5-0. The Dogs will have to wait until district tournaments are concluded to see if their record merits an at-large regional bid.

Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer.

Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Orlando Health: Women, Don’t Ignore a MiniStroke — It’s Trying to Tell You Something A mini-stroke, also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), is a warning sign that a stroke could be imminent. But women are less likely to get a diagnosis and treatment, and that can be deadly.

Stroke, the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States, occurs in men and women almost equally, and researchers trying to understand the cause of this gender gap in treatment have focused mostly on stroke’s cousin: coronary artery disease. This condition, under-diagnosed and under-treated in women, increases stroke risk because plaque buildup can block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain (leading to stroke) just as it can to the heart (leading to heart attack).

Women account for 58 percent of all stroke deaths, and biology seems to play a role: Women are less likely to have heart disease or stroke before menopause, which means they are 10 to 15 years older than the average male patient with the same diagnosis.

And with increased age come co-existing health problems that likely affect outcomes.

It all adds up to this: Women should be particularly aware that stroke-like symptoms, even short-lived, could signal a dangerous medical condition and seek immediate, potentially life-saving treatment to prevent a stroke.

THE WARNING SIGNS A TIA occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is temporarily blocked or reduced, often by a blood clot. This causes sudden temporary stroke-like symptoms, including: • Weakness, numbness or paralysis on one side of your body • Slurred speech or difficulty understanding others • Blindness or trouble with vision in one or both eyes • Dizziness • Severe headache with no apparent cause.
