Senior Smiles Osceola: Bringing Affordable Dentures to Osceola Seniors with a State-of-the-Art Mobile Unit Seniors in Osceola County have a new reason to smile after Osceola County Commissioner Viviana Janer kicked off Senior Smiles Osceola, a program in collaboration with Osceola Community Health Services, to provide quality partial or full dentures to residents aged 55 and older.

Senior Smiles Osceola rolls out a state-of-the-art mobile unit to make essential dentures and related care leading up to dentures (or partials) more accessible and affordable in local Osceola County neighborhoods. The program aims to address the unique needs of senior citizens who often face challenges in accessing such services.

“Providing this care to our seniors is a priority for me and I’m happy to have brought the initiative forward with the support of the County Commission.

This should ease the struggle to find affordable care and make it easier for our seniors as services are now coming directly to your neighborhood,” said Janer, the Commissioner for District 2. “I know there’s a need for this type of program, and I’m pleased to partner with Osceola Community Health Services to start Senior Smiles Osceola! And I am especially pleased to make it possible for District 2 residents to qualify for additional support.”

Florida Students Invited to Showcase Their Talents in 2024 Black History Month Contests The Florida Department of Education and Volunteer Florida have launched the 2024 Black History Month student art and essay contests and educator awards with the theme of “Celebrating Florida’s African American Heroes and Their Contributions to Freedom.” These contests will run through Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Black History Month is celebrated each year in the month of February.

“Black History Month serves as a perfect chance for students to learn about the accomplishments that African Americans heroes have contributed to Florida in the name of freedom,” said Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “I hope students and educators use this contest to delve into Florida’s rich history and to learn about how African Americans have shaped our great state.”

NEWS KUA to Host Free Movie in the Park Featuring DreamWorks ‘Trolls Band Together’ at Kissimmee’s Lakefront Park Kissimmee Utility Authority, in partnership with the City of Kissimmee, will host a free Movie in the Park event, Friday, Feb. 2 at the Veterans Lawn of Kissimmee Lakefront Park as part of KUA’s annual 6-month Movie in the Park series.

The event will feature DreamWorks ‘Trolls Band Together,’ shown on a giant 50-foot screen.

Activities begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the movie at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. The movie will also feature closed captioning for the hearing impaired.

KUA’s inflatable Kids Power Zone, a craft station, a photo booth, free popcorn, and prize giveaways will all be part of tonight’s free event. Onsite concessions will also be available.

NEWS Osceola County’s Call to Action: Opioid Task Force Survey Deadline Extension Offers More Time for Vital Community Feedback

The Osceola Opioid Task Force, a collaborative initiative that will utilize funds from the settlement with the country’s largest pharmacies regarding the Opioid Crisis to address the complex challenges posed by opioid misuse within the community, has extended the deadline for community organizations to provide input on how best to battle the Opioid Crisis.

The Task Force, formed in 2023, is conducting a survey of community organizations currently fighting opioid misuse to assess which organizations may need more funding to do their work more effectively, or where there may currently be gaps in available services that settlement funds could be used to fill. The results of the survey will help direct where settlement funds could be allocated in Osceola County.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Voters: Elections Office Engages Osceola County High School Seniors in Voter Registration The Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Office is visiting high schools in and around Osceola County helping seniors to register to vote. This initiative is focused on empowering senior students by providing them with the resources and guidance needed to register to vote. Through this educational outreach, the elections office is not only facilitating the registration process, but also fostering civic engagement among the youth of Osceola County.

Every year outreach staff visits each public high school in the county one to two times to reach all their senior students. At these visits, elections outreach staff help eligible students to register to vote and educate all students on how, when, where and why to vote. Students wishing to register to vote need to know either their Florida Driver License/Permit/ID card number or the last 4 digits of their Social Security Number.

Orlando Health Network launched innovative care models in 2023 Orlando Health Network launched various innovative health care models in 2023 to enhance the quality of patient care. Since its inception in 2013, the network has generated more than $165 million in savings to patients, payers, employers and taxpayers, according to the Clinically Integrated Network Value Report 2023.

The recently released 2023 report details how the network, part of the Orlando Health hospital system, launched multiple initiatives during 2023 to ensure that the nearly 300,000 patients it serves in Central and West Florida receive timely, efficient, and effective medical care from more than 6,600 multispecialty providers.

“Our 2023 Clinically Integrated Network Value Report showcases our myriad innovative care models, clinical and quality programs, and strong performance across value-based arrangements in the past year,” said Erik Walker, MD, board chairman, Orlando Health Network. “Now serving nearly 300,000 patients, Orlando Health Network achieved notable accomplishments for the tenth year in a row through the thoughtful collaboration with our dedicated providers and health system partners. On behalf of our network, I am once again humbled to share these efforts and their accompanying achievements.”

Initiatives launched by the network in 2023 include the Orlando Health Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers, which are designed to effectively manage the post-hospitalization and advanced pharmacy needs of patients.

A Special ‘Baby Delivery’ by St. Cloud Fire Rescue Station 32 Leads to ‘Stork Club Membership Honor Members of St. Cloud Fire Rescue Station 32 are the newest members of a very special club, the Stork Club.

The St. Cloud team earned this honor following their successful assistance in the delivery of a baby on December 3, 2023, while on the way to the hospital.

New Florida ‘Protect the Panther’ specialty license plate now available to Florida motorists A new Protect the Panther license plate is now available to Florida motorists, and features a striking photograph taken by Carlton Ward in 2018 of the first female panther documented north of the Caloosahatchee River since 1973, along with her kitten. The new license plate can be purchased at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles or by checking with your local tax collector office for availability.

The FWC is reminding the public that purchasing a Protect the Panther license plate isn’t the only way motorists can help panthers, drivers can also help by following all posted speed limits, particularly in panther zones, which are in place in several counties across south Florida to coincide with areas where panthers are known to cross. Panther speed zones help protect both Florida panthers and motorists from vehicle collisions and potential injury.

96-unit affordable housing project breaks ground in West Kissimmee, Osceola County and City of Kissimmee help fund development A $33.9 million 96unit affordable housing community is coming to West Vine Street in Kissimmee that will consist of four threestory buildings and a free standing clubhouse with a pool, cabana and other amenities. Osceola County is provided $4.5 million in financing, along with the City of Kissimmee contributing another $500,000.

Longhorns Clinch FHSAA Class 7A, District 9 girls’ soccer championship in 1-0 Showdown with Celebration

Heading into Tuesday’s night FHSAA Class 7A, District 9 girls’ soccer final, top-seeded Celebration and second-seeded Harmony had surrendered exactly two combined goals in their last 800 minutes of soccer; while going a combined 10-0-0.

So it should come as no surprise that Tuesday night’s final was a low-scoring affair, won by Harmony, 1-0, on a second-half goal by Longhorn freshman forward Jayden Frost. It was the first career game-winner for Frost, who was the smallest and youngest player on the field.

“It was a tough game all night with neither team generating a lot of offense,” Harmony coach Scott Marlega said. “At the end of the day we won a flick off a throw in and the smallest player on the field found the ball at her feet directly in front of the goal and tapped it in. Admittedly, it wasn’t the prettiest or most dramatic goal, but it was what we needed at the time.”

The win lifted the Longhorns to 13-3-0 on the season and will send them into a 7A, Region 3 quarterfinal next week – with the opponent and site yet to be determined.

“They changed the format a couple of years ago and where the district champion is not guaranteed a first round regional home game,” Marlega noted. “So we will have to wait until all district play is over and see where they rank us. Regardless, of who or where we play, I’m extremely proud of this group tonight.”

Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer.

Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Orlando Health: How Stress Increases Dementia Risk Stress is linked to health problems ranging from depression and anxiety to heart disease and diabetes. We can also add dementia to that list, recent research suggests.

According to a study, elevated levels of the “stress hormone,” called cortisol, are linked to cognitive problems like memory loss starting in your mid- to late 30s. Researchers also associated elevated cortisol with physical brain changes often seen as precursors to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The link was especially strong for women.

Understanding the relationship between cortisol, stress and overall wellness may help you understand the impact stress has on your brain.

WHAT IS CORTISOL? Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that’s involved in several vital processes, including helping the body respond to stress. The amount of cortisol in your blood varies, but it’s generally highest when you wake up and decreases throughout the day. When you’re under physical or emotional stress, your body secretes additional cortisol to help you respond appropriately.

CONNECTION BETWEEN STRESS AND BRAIN HEALTH Researchers looked at the relationship between cortisol levels and performance on various brain function tests. The results: Participants with the highest cortisol levels performed worse on tests of memory, organization, visual perception and attention.

Researchers also noticed a relationship between changes in the brain that are known precursors to some types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. The changes were so significant among those with the highest cortisol levels that they could be seen in an MRI scan of the brain.
