Early Voting Begins Today in Florida House District 35 Special Election Between Erika Booth and Tom Keen Beginning today, January 6, registered voters in select areas of Orange and Osceola counties are able to early vote in the District 35 Florida House Special Election. The race became necessary after Fred Hawkins Jr. resigned in 2023 to become President at South Florida State College. The special election features two candidates: Republican Erika Booth, a member of the Osceola County School Board with a strong background in elementary education, and Democrat Tom Keen, a Navy veteran and Lake Nona businessman.

Erika Booth, known for her educational experience within the Osceola School District and holding two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from UCF, has received the A+ Teacher Award from Spectrum News 13, has completed the Education Leadership program at Stetson University, and has received endorsements from Florida’s Realtors and the Central Florida Hotel and Lodging Association. She is a Kissimmee native, a member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club, and married to Osceola County Commissioner for District 5, Ricky Booth.

We had a busy and successful year. In addition to reducing crime, we created several community programs and partnerships. These programs include the Women on Watch Initiative, which is the first ever all-female police academy. It is part of my plan to bring more highly qualified women to our agency. Texas, Florida Top Growth States Again in 2023, According to U-Haul Migration Data Trends Florida ranked just behind Texas in netting the largest number of movers in oneway U-Haul equipment in 2023, marking the third consecutive year the two states have finished atop the U-Haul Growth Index. After Texas and Florida were North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Virginia round out the top 10 states for growth.

For the fourth year in a row, California reflected the largest net loss of one-way movers. Other bottom-five states for growth are Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois and Massachusetts. New York ranks 43rd.

U-Haul calculates growth states by each state’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box moving container transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada.

“While one-way transactions in 2023 remained below the record-breaking levels we witnessed immediately following the pandemic, we continued to see many of the same geographical trends from U-Haul customers moving between states,” said John “J.T.” Taylor, U-Haul International president. “Migration to states in the Southeast and Southwest is still very pronounced. Demand for one-way equipment out of certain markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast mirrors what we have seen during recent moving cycles. Wherever DIY customers go, and whatever mobility and selfstorage needs they have in 2024, U-Haul will be there with solutions.”

Mecum Kissimmee, World’s Largest Collector Car Auction to Return to Kissimmee January 2-14 Mecum Kissimmee 2024, the 25th anniversary celebration of The World’s Largest Collector Car Auction is returning this January 2-14 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, and according to Mecum officials, there will be more vehicles, more road art, and more exhibits to view, than ever before!

The car count for the anniversary of the world record-setting event is poised to outpace that of previous years, with the diverse selection including American muscle cars, ‘50s classics, Corvettes, exotics, trucks, Hot Rods, customs and more. Live coverage of the auction will be available for viewing on MotorTrendTV and MotorTrend+.

Energy drinks and other caffeine-packed beverages have become increasingly popular, particularly with teens and young adults. While most people can drink them safely, they can be a health threat if you have heart issues or high blood pressure.

It is not uncommon to find energy drinks that contain 200 mg of caffeine – or roughly the equivalent of six cans of soda or two cups of coffee. The average person should drink no more than 400 mg of caffeine each day, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Relieving your child’s pain doesn’t always mean taking medicine or having surgery. Simple TENS units, which have become more popular in recent years, offer a safe, noninvasive alternative for many kids.

Sometimes the use of TENS also can reduce the amount of pain medicine a child needs. You should discuss with your child’s doctor how this therapy can be incorporated into your child’s daily treatments.

Always supervise your child when a TENS unit is being used. A child can experience more pain if the TENS unit is used incorrectly.

SAFETY OF TENS For most children, TENS is a safe treatment with no side effects. However, you should always consult your child’s doctor before beginning any treatment. There are some patients, such as those with epilepsy or heart conditions, who should not use a TENS unit.

NEWS City of St. Cloud Offers Small Businesses Community Development Block Grants Up to $30,000 The City of St. Cloud is investing up to $328,100 through its Community Development Block Grant program, funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, to assist any small businesses in the City with financial assistance for eligible economic development activity, including job creation and/or retention.

“There was some confusion caused by an error on the application form, but we want to reassure our local businesses that these grants are available to any local business, not just those in the downtown area,” said Economic Development Director Antranette Forbes. “We remain committed to helping all our businesses prosper as our city continues to grow.”
