Healthy Arteries, Healthy Heart and Circulation. Revive Active has 26 active ingredients including L’arginine, L’citrulinne, and CoQ10. Extract from “Take the pressure off your Heart” written by Medical correspondent Robert E Kowalski. We all strive to keep levels of LDL, triglycerides, glucose and inflammation as low as possible. When we talk about heart disease, we’re really talking about a disease of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. ‘Hardening of the arteries’ or arteriosclerosis since the disease is characterised by hardening of the artery and deposition of plaque. If an adult overexerts himself or experiences extreme stress, the blocked and hardened arteries can’t get enough blood through to the muscles of the heart or brain. Sometimes a plaque ruptures, spilling out its contents into the bloodstream where a clot forms. Large clots get stuck preventing blood flow, this can lead to a heart attack or a stroke. L’arginine and L’citrulinne create Nitric Oxide (NO) on a sustained basis in the body. This gas earned the Doctors who discovered it the Nobel Prize in 1998. Blood pressure is strongly influenced by the amount of NO in the blood. It relaxes the arteries making them more compliant and able to constrict and dilate as needed. In twelve studies from 1991 through 2005, arginine was shown to improve blood flow by improving endothelial function.7 out of 10 showed significant reductions in angina pain, which results from insufficient blood and oxygen reaching the heart muscle.

whizz kids hack android By Laura Ivers

Ethiopian children astound the pros. One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is an organisation that oversees the creation of affordable educational devices for use in the developing world. They recently completed a bold experiment to see if illiterate children, with no previous exposure to written words, could learn how to read all by themselves, through experimenting with tablets preloaded with alphabet-training games, e-books, movies, cartoons, painting applications and other programs. Motorola Xoom tablets, which use a solar charging system, were dropped off by OLPC workers to two remote Ethiopian villages. 40 children in total, who had previously never seen printed materials, road signs or even printed packaging, were chosen for the project and the tablets were delivered in closed boxes, taped shut that included no instructions. OLPC’s founder, Nicholas Negroponte, speaking at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech conference said, “I thought the kids would play with the boxes. Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, found the on-off switch … powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child, per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs in the village, and within five months, they had hacked Android. Someone in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera, and they figured out the camera, and had hacked Android.”

6

Ed McNierney, OLPC’s Chief Technology Officer elaborated further, The kids had completely customized the desktop so every kid’s tablet looked different. We had installed software to prevent them from doing that. And the fact they worked around it was clearly the kind of creativity, the kind of inquiry, the kind of discovery that we think is essential to learning.

"Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs in the village, and within five months, they had hacked Android." The experiment was a response to the problem that over 100 million first-grade children worldwide have no access to schooling and results from early observations on the experiment have been highly encouraging, presenting exciting new possibilities for education and learning globally. one.laptop.org

crisps with a conscience By Elva Carri

finding your true inner manliness By Jonno Kinsella Kaethe Burt O’Dea, a healthcare design researcher living in Dublin, began the community garden on Sitric Road in Stoneybatter some years ago as a way to help bring the residents together and develop more sustainable practices for food production at a local level. Many Dubliners will already have heard of ‘Sitric Picnic’, a small festival that grew out of this little plot and brings together local music, art, composting, seeds, board games, face painting, food and people. And it’s got a ‘Zero Waste’ policy - BYO cup, plate and cutlery and take them home after! But one of the most recent projects evolving there is ‘Crisps with a Conscience.’ This tasty idea formed organically from their SPUDS project. SPUDS was a way to encourage people to question the idea of genetically modifying potato crops to make them blight resistant and to look for alternative solutions. SPUDS had growers all over the country trying out a naturally blight resistant crop. Not only did the crops avoid blight in one of the country’s worst years for the disease, but the taste tests were hugely positive. Crisps with a Conscience took things a step further and began to look at how crisps are made and how many potatoes are thrown aside for being “the wrong size or shape”. Their first trial took place last summer. Not only was the packaging environmentally friendly and biodegradable, but happy customers delighted in the fact that they “Tasted like potatoes!” Crisps with a Conscience is due to launch around the country later this year, with packs including educational infographics and blight resistant seeds to encourage kids to learn about what really makes a great potato and a great crisp. If that’s whet your appetite for more information check desireland.ie.

EmpowerMENt and BetterMENt. An amazing phenomenon is rising in Ireland these days. Many great men’s organisations are springing up with the goal of the empowerment and betterment of men, men’s health, stability and maturity. One such organisation is The ManKind Project (MKP), who host an initiatory experience called the New Warrior Training Adventure once a year, and maintain circles for self-exploration and healing throughout the year. MKP responds to our current system’s failure to effectively prevent many issues related to men in our culture and sets about “Changing the world, one man at a time” with their initiation and subsequent support within their circles. They’ve been building a community in Ireland since 2004 and are enjoying an upsurge of activity now. In MKP culture, men practice expressing emotions, communicating, resolving confl ict, deep introspection, having a purpose and creating healthy relationships. It provides an opportunity and space to gain an understanding of a healthy male role in society, and of male sexuality. Men attend and reclaim integrity and accountability. Best of all, they may enter enduring, fully autonomous communities of men and gain the support to live the skills listed above; and an abiding, accessible forum to tell their Truth. There are MKP Men’s groups in Dublin, Belfast and Galway and an introductory, initiatory training weekend will take place this October in County Clare, along with preparing the ground for new groups in Cork and elsewhere. uk.mkp.org

limerick savours local leftovers By Elva Carri

According to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Stop Food Waste Campaign, the average family throws away about 1/3 of the food they buy. To tackle this in a delicious fashion, groups in Limerick City have joined forces to upskill citizens with a free recipe booklet that encourages people to shop local and make use of leftovers. Local eateries will also be serving dishes that keep this ethos in mind. ‘Savour Limerick’ is available from Limerick City and County Councils. Or download online. limerickcity.ie

8 the burrito boyz

ecstasy of a cripple

By Elva Carri

Gastronomical giving from San Diego Teens

Art to revolutionise our beliefs.

A group, nicknamed The Burrito Boys, are giving of their time to brighten the lives and fi ll the bellies of others by handing out burritos to those who need them most. Michael Johnson and his wife began the project to help their own son gain a better understanding of the needs of others one Sunday. Now, over 147 Sundays later, more teens and volunteers have gotten on board and in total have made almost 40,000 burritos! And it’s not just about the food. Michael reminds the boys to make eye contact and a connection with the people they’re serving. He says he’s seen a change in his son and recipients have commented on the beauty of the hearts of all the boys involved.

Campaigns, protests or voicing an opinion in order to bring about change is not always something that happens through word, voice or on placards. All too often, we look at art as something purely ‘visual’ and one dimensional, and fail to acknowledge the questioning and re-education it hopes to stir up within us. Jocelyn Woods photographic art campaign with Thomas Dodd however, leaves you no option but to listen. It’s bold and it’s brave and will stop you in your tracks long enough to consider its purpose and effects. Jocelyn Woods is a poet, mystic, artist and model with a severe and rare neuromuscular disease. Creating artworks with photographer Thomas Dodd, she aims to bring about a revolution in our understanding and beliefs surrounding the body, sexuality and spirituality. Sexuality and spirituality are inseparable to Jocelyn Woods. Her pieces explore the deepest ancient cosmic schism; the split between body and soul, and calls us to question our own understandings of the two and how they fit together. Jocelyn purports that, “The universal solvent to our artificial voids of disease must inherently lie in the Divine Marriage of body and soul, as integral aspects of a whole, rather than externalised tyrannies vying for supremacy.” The central theme of her campaign is to reveal the perfection of truths that have been lying dormant within us and her work aspires to usher in our resurrection into the New Jerusalem on earth. You can view and support her work online and may find yourself discovering an array of thoughts, feelings and instincts you never listened to within yourself until now. You can find Woods’ art campaign, The “Ecstasy of a Cripple: WE ARE THE CURE” on RocketHub at the link below.

While the teenage years are often seen to be a time of hanging about or causing trouble, it’s increasingly understood as an idealistic and aspirational time in an individual’s life. With the right mentors leading the way, there’s no telling what our teens can achieve. Recently, San Diego’s homeless community has seen this enthusiasm for positivity through a very tasty initiative.

“With the right mentors leading the way, there’s no telling what our teens can achieve.”

spirituality & the city

“a sense of place”

Mary Elizabeth Coen Motivational speaker & author I visit Coole Park to walk, meditate and be inspired. It’s exhilarating to tread in the footsteps of literary giants like W.B. Yeats, Lady Augusta Gregory and George Russell, a triad passionately involved in spirituality and Madame Blavatsky’s theosophical society. Their lingering memory and palpable energy merges with nature. I love to ground myself by hugging a gigantic American redwood, with russet bark so hairy and scaly it resembles a prehistoric mammoth. Feeling a power surge from my toes up, I regularly do some Chi Gung before continuing on to the turlough (disappearing lake). Once there, I sit on a favourite rock, concentrate on the breath and still my mind. That wonderful feeling of being one with the world is possible in this magical place. Here I can access an endless ocean of bliss and send out love to all that is, has been and will be.

Tony Christie Creator of Labyrinth Wisdom Cards

When I moved to Monkstown, it was supposed to be a temporary stopgap until I found somewhere more suitable. That was ten years ago. From the moment I arrived, I knew I was home. I’ve lost count of the walking shoes I’ve since worn out, traipsing the piers or discovering local hidden treasures. But, there’s one secret place I find myself returning to whenever I need a moment of calm. At the bottom of Sandycove East Lane, is a steep row of steps leading to a cluster of jagged rocks, overlooking Dalkey harbour. The majority of our bodies is water so it makes sense that the sea should have such a powerful influence on us. I’ve often sat there for hours, allowing the ebb and flow of the waves to quieten whatever worries are loitering about in my head.

My favourite place is the labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral, France. Here, a feeling of serenity pervades my being. As I journey to the centre of the labyrinth, I am moving to the centre of my own being, where I feel empowered, and full of life. Being there brings me heightened awareness. I feel more at one with everyone and everything, glimpsing images and senses of past life experiences, and of my interconnectedness to all of existence. In the labyrinth, I am travelling over powerful earth energies, known as ‘the Wouivre’, protected by the soaring structure of the cathedral, the multicoloured stained-glass light illuminating my world. My body tingles with the aliveness of spirit. In this magical place, straddling the dimensions between worlds, my heart and soul are uplifted and grateful for being present in one of man’s divine works to raise humanity’s consciousness.

Magdalena Szpilka Health Practitioner and Trainer My favourite place, where I can truly be myself, is nature. It doesn’t matter if it’s a beach, woods, mountains, a meadow… Once I’m in nature, I go right into my center. It’s effortless and easy. It feels like I don’t have to hide anything, pretend anything, like nature sees through me, knows all my secrets, yet holds no judgements, just is, present and available, offering its gifts willingly and freely. I can be authentic, honest; which sometimes means being sad, angry, scared, but nature doesn’t need me to explain myself, I can just be, enjoying the connection… I love this nature’s embrace. Within seconds I slow down and connect with my inner peace. It is a lovely feeling of being held, supported, taken care of, nurtured, loved unconditionally.

11 John Goggins Custodian of the National Bahá’í Centre Six years ago, my wife and I were offered the opportunity to serve as custodians for the National Bahá’í Centre, a Victorian house in the embassy belt of Dublin 4. I had often visited it over the years. It serves as a focal point for the local and national Baha’i community. It sits in a leafy suburb and is decorated in the traditional style with ornate ceilings and richly papered walls but what sets it apart, is the atmosphere of tranquillity and peace. I believe that this is due in no small part to the number of wonderful souls who have spoken and prayed here over the years. Any house where the word of God is recited and His praise glorified must retain some of that essence in its very fabric. It is a house where visitors feel welcome and comfortable. It is an oasis in a busy world and possesses an inexplicable atmosphere of calm that soothes and reassures troubled minds and weary bodies.

Debbie Guinnane Artist My favourite place is not a favourite place out of joy, or pleasure, but the place/time when I am no longer aware of the question at all. When there is silence - the mind looking/feeling inwards and reaching/feeling outwards concurrently. When there is a sense of an animal living beneath the surface of an intelligent, questioning, but self-conscious state of mind. Boundaries and definitions between time, place and I are eroded, energy expressed through the rising of the breath, the heaving of the chest; the muscles and weight of my limbs become spry and stronger, everything is pulsing. A sense of bodily control and confidence washes over doubt; I feel complete, thriving. My mind and body are no longer dualities, but unconditionally as one, the sense of ‘I’ no longer resonates apart from the space around, but my perception is one of awe and fluidity. It’s like experiencing a uniquely primal conscience state. Peaceful, yet empowered and undomesticated.

Together they form the broadest spectrum of existence imaginable – with the extreme feminine on one end and the extreme masculine on the other. Finding the balance of this primal pair is what drives your inner world. Without the masculine, there is no activating principle to ignite life; without the feminine, there is no creation to be ignited or form to manifest. AWAKENING CONSCIOUS, SACRED FEMININITY This autumn, within our Collective Soul, we will experience another stage of reactivation of a more conscious and sacred femininity. Whilst this reawakening is a gradual process, the awareness of the necessity to nurture, commune, of being inclusive, of practising heart-based understanding on all levels within us and within our local, national and global communities is increasing. Her emerging is pronounced in early November, mirroring the shift that has already taken place in June and the massive healing during the Great Pyramid formation in mid-July.

Consequently, everyone will feel an increasing awareness to re-create our world in a manner where the systems we live within are both inclusive and supportive of everyone and everything. The masculine principle is necessary to provide the fuel to ‘get things started’ and our Autumn months are characterised by a youthful, proactive, passionate masculine force, which will enable you to tap into, and direct accordingly, an inspired and spirited energy. Gazing east an hour or so before the Sun rises, you will see the stellar embodiment of that principle eagerly shining as Mars, the morning star. There exists an equally passionate but maturing and socially aware feminine to balance the virility of the waxing masculine. Venus shines ever so brightly in our early autumnal evening skies, as Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her appearance since the 17 th May in the evening sky is analogous to the Divine Being Shekhinah who is often depicted as standing on a serpent, signifying she has mastered the power of creative wisdom. Her embodiment as Venus Hesperus (the evening star) corresponds with an apt time to sagely activate your own inner femininity, and the collective feminine principle in general, in a tangible way and in a manner which engenders or catalyses your actions towards an improved society. MANIFEST YOUR DESTINY As she ascends onto her throne on November 1 st, radiating a clear brilliant blue-white aura, you have the opportunity to manifest your feminine destiny – to actualise your potential in complete service of the betterment of your world. Similarly, you will notice an increased awareness of energy flowing through your body as Venus appears fully whole and radiant until mid-December, when she descends from her throne to prepare for her transition to death and subsequent rebirth in mid-January. Nothing you think or do happens in a vacuum – it all has an effect on the universe. Regardless of whether you create empowered thoughts or live within a stew of self-effacing and negative thoughts, you are constantly projecting those messages to all those who live in your world. It is for that reason that it is important to take advantage of every opportunity to create a life-affirming reality. The energetic conditions of the

autumnal cosmos reflect a time that is ripe to mould and shape the nascent blueprint of the structures that will house our humanity. It is therefore your responsibility to thoroughly embody your true feminine nature and unique qualities, without suppressing your masculinity, since this is how you personally contribute to a re-emergence of a conscious feminine. To do that effectively you may need to heal your personal femininity. HEALING I would ask you to hold space concerning the thrice fold expression of the feminine by reflecting on the following questions during 2013’s third loop of time on the 21st October through to the 10th November: »» How comfortable are you with your own feminine expression? »» In what ways do you need to develop confidence in expressing your light; your gratitude; your compassion; your receptivity; your body and your heart-based understanding? »» How does your feminine self contribute to your world?

“...the time is right to utterly transmute your life in consort with the titanic and volcanic shifts occurring around you.”

Infused with the feminine power of intuition and heightened perception, the three week ‘cosmic pause’ in late October through early November means that you have the opportunity to keep centred on your spiritual intent and divinity and to call down the fire as you traipse through old scripts and face the enemies of your soul that are keeping you in an emotional groundhog day – ever repeating the same relationship patterns. The deeply emotionally charged space/time of early November holds the potentiality to see past old hurts and to forgive both yourself and others as you embrace Scorpio’s true gift, emotional alchemy. Freeing your soul from the chains of emotional hurt is the first step in empowering your femininity, unable, as she exists,

to unconditionally love and accept life as it is without self-forgiveness. Your active and conscious transmutation of those heavier feelings not only serves to allow a more free flowing expression of your femininity but it will feed the active transformation of the collective feminine principle, something necessary in our creation of our new world.

These changes to the floor plan of a home can change the birth energy of the building. It is best when the home retains its original shape, since these shifting energies can make a proper Feng Shui consultation difficult, though not impossible. In Feng Shui the best shape for a home is a perfect square; otherwise we can have missing areas when dividing up the home in the nine sections of the bagua. An odd shaped home may be missing the best areas for wealth, love or health. Similarly, when the roof has been removed during a remodel, the floor is exposed to sunlight and the energy of the birth cycle changes. Also, if the addition is larger than the old home, it overpowers the original home’s energy. Have you ever known a couple who had a home and were doing well, but after a remodel their luck changed? This may be because the remodel changed the birth cycle energy. Once you know the birth cycle of the home the twenty year period when it was built you can reference which of the nine cycles it falls into and calculate the homes from there.however, Charts ofare the Cactusenergies and dried flowers, cycles usually start with 1 which not recommended. older than this? The simple answer is that the cycles repeat every twenty years: so the previous cycle begins in 1844 and is 9. Cycle 8 starts in 1824 and so on. Once you have the birth cycle of the home you simply take the house’s facing direction and use this to calculate the energy blueprint of the home. With this information you find the home’s destiny. Will it support money or people? Will you have health and harmony? If not, what can you do to ‘cure’ your home? If you feel like things are not flowing in your life and would like to create more harmony, peace, prosperity, love and well being, place a water remedy outside. For a typical house you must have around 250 litres of water flowing. If you live close to the ocean, a lake or pond you will already be benefiting from their energy and won’t need to add a fountain. If you don’t, the best placement for your water remedy is in the southwest or to the east of your home until the year 2044. If you do not have the option for either of these locations, the fountain can be placed anywhere in the garden, on a deck or porch. put you in the power position when you Amanda CollinsPlacing is the founder of the are cooking. the colours blue or International Shui School black near orFeng on the refrigerator has been InternationalFengShuiSchool.com scientifically proven to help suppress appetite. positive meditation

beyond conventional thinking By Sandy C. Newbigging

Let go of your thoughts for more liberated living. Peace of mind is possible without having to still your mind. Hard to believe, I know, but let me explain why. How many thoughts pass through your mind on a daily basis? Incredibly, it has been said that the average person has around 100,000 thoughts every day. That’s a lot of thoughts! The challenge we face however, is the number of these thoughts that are negative and thus have a potentially harmful impact on your body, your mood and your life. So how can you turn this around? 1 THE MYTH OF POSITIVE THINKING Now I’m a believer in, and promoter of, the benefits of being positive but the sheer quantity of thoughts makes any attempts to change your mind so that you only have ‘positive thoughts’ an almost impossible task. So if you’ve done your best to think positive, but not mastered it, be easy on yourself. 2 A VERY APPEALING SOLUTION INDEED Rather than attempt the task of changing or stopping all the thoughts that pass through your mind daily, I recommend that instead you do one thing: change your relationship with your thoughts. The goal: to experience a sense of serenity irrespective of the kinds of thoughts in your mind. Stop reading, close your eyes and then, whenever you become aware of a thought, give the thought a number: one, two, three and so on. Count your thoughts for the next minute. Having done that, how many thoughts did you count? It doesn’t matter if you counted 2 or 202 thoughts! What is important is that if you can count your thoughts, it means that you are not your thoughts. They came and went, but you didn’t! You are the conscious awareness that is aware of your thoughts. And that awareness is

already still, silent and serene. You are that which is aware of your thoughts, but you are not your thoughts! What a relief. 3 STOP GIVING AWAY POWER TO YOUR THOUGHTS No thought has the inherent power to negatively affect your mood or life success. The only way you can give thoughts power is by identifying with them through the act of thinking. To help you get your head around this, let me share an amazing analogy taught to me by my meditation teacher. Imagine you are outdoors with your best friend on a nice sunny day, sitting at the side of a busy road. You have been given the simple task of counting all the red cars that drive by. As you relax at the side of the road, a few cars come by – one blue, another black and then a red one, which you count. A little more time passes

“You are that which is aware of your thoughts, but you are not your thoughts!”

and more cars drive by. You continue to sit safely at the side of the road, feeling quite serene and happy as you enjoy the scene. Then, as a red car comes by, your friend jumps up, runs after it and, with a spectacular leap, manages to grab the car’s rear bumper, at which point they start being dragged up the road. You can see very clearly that they are getting hurt and are confused as to why they are holding on so tight. So you shout after your friend – “Let go!” – to which they shout back that the red car is hurting them. You shout back “The car isn’t hurting you; you are getting hurt because you are holding on to it. Let go! Let go!” The same is true for your thoughts. 4 LET GO OF LIMITATIONS FOR A MORE LIBERATED LIFE Thoughts have no power to hurt you or hold you back from being a success in life. What hurts and limits you is holding onto them through the act of thinking. As you learn to change your relationship with your mind, you can learn to let go of your thoughts, so that they lose their power to negatively impact on your life, for good. Sandy C. pause for your paws By Mary Berkery

Top tips for talons & nutrition for nails. This title came from a treatment menu that I helped put together for a skin care emporium and spa in Dublin in early 2000. I was consulted to create a menu with catchy names. ‘Pause for your Paws’ was the heading for hands, feet and nail care! Another of our catchy names was ‘The Pink Pamper’, a luxury rose oil body massage, followed by a rose petal elixir. The client then left with three roses! The Pink Pamper became a much talked about service on TV, Radio and magazines, promoted as a gift for Valentine’s day, Mother’s day and Birthdays. Pause for your Paws never got such highlights. Yet, the service of foot soaks, hand and foot massages and nail care was an important part of this emporium’s offerings. In this editorial I will look especially at care of nails. Nails are similar to claws in other animals. Nails protect the sensitive nerve endings of fingers and toes. They also provide support for the tips of the fingers and toes, protect them from injury, and aid in picking up small objects. Fingernails and toenails are made of a protein called keratin which is comprised of flat dead cells. The living part of the nail is under and behind the cuticle. For this reason, if you’re oiling, it is important to massage the oil around the cuticle to nurture the living cells. Cared for nails play a big part in an over-all cared for appearance. That attention communicates much nonverbally to others when we meet them. Their condition also indicates your vitality as illness and stress often affect their growth. For example, lines across the toenails can indicate deep stress. White spots on fingernails can indicate a mineral imbalance. Biting and picking nails can have many causes. In my work over the years,

20 I see this condition when there is poor self and body image. A diet that is high in white sugars or alcohol can create an aggravation in the body, resulting in nail biting or picking too. Working with healthy self-care both mentally and physically can eventually stop this self-negating habit. PROTECT & CARE Excessive hand-washing or using household cleaning solutions can rob our skin and nails of vital oil and moisture, resulting in split, peeling nails. Wear gloves when possible for household chores. Detergent hair shampoos, or those for oily hair designed to strip lipids and other natural oils from the scalp can also strip nails of their vital moisture. Change to plant based ingredients such as Trilogy Line or Intelligent Nutrients Pure Luxe shampoo. CLIPPING & FILING When clipping and filing, it’s better to use an emery board in place of steel one to prevent breaking or splitting. File toenails straight across and not around the edges as this can encourage in-grown nails. On fingernails, fi le in a curve, commencing at edge and moving to centre. Dr Hauschka Neem Nail Oil is an excellent product to massage into the nail base after your weekly filing and buffing to smooth and polish naturally.

NUTRITION FOR NAILS Nutritionally, include Biotin rich food in your daily intake as it’s important to have a sufficient supply of biotin for healthy nails. Swiss Chard is a top producer of biotin and a great part of a healthy salad choice or green juice mix. Carrots contain biotin, as well as beta-carotene, which help with general health. Almonds, walnuts and other nuts supply the body with biotin, and are a portable way to get proteins and other nutrition into a diet. Soak nuts overnight before consuming, if possible, for optimum nutrient value. LET THEM BREATHE To conclude – go barefoot regularly! Stretch open feet and hands on the earth with yoga poses such as dog pose. This enhances chi energy to your beloved paws and claws. Mary Berkery is a Life, Wellness and Beauty Coach. embodying

passion By Jai Kartar Kaur Mohan

Finding the courage to embody your passion.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. We are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world.” - Maya Angelou Passion is desirable, inspirational and electric. Are you embodying your passion or are you sitting at the sidelines of life? Are you shrouded in fear, doubt, judgement, or envy? When I think of passion I envision an artist in the throes of creation. I can hear “freedom ring” from the podium where Martin Luther King spoke. I can feel the power of stillness, as Mahatma Ghandi must have felt when he sat in peaceable protest, his quiet a roar in the hearts of all those who leaned in to listen. As a Kundalini yogi, I know that I am the author of my life. I know my life is a journey of remembrance, a process of returning to my beloved Creator. I have been gifted this breath, this consciousness, to be me. I am not meant to be more than or less than ME. I am meant to explore all of the possibilities of being me. I am meant to adventurously define my greatness and to humbly accept it. I acknowledge that the living, passionate truth in me is a divine reflection, an ode to my Creator. My teacher Yogi Bhajan said, “It’s not the life that you live but the courage that you bring to it that matters.” Some of your life’s script has already been written to assure the lessons your soul requires are received. However, there is room for improvisation in the play of life. You can shrink from the challenges that come and be shackled by ill-fate. Alternatively, you can practice embodying your passion and be the author of your destiny. Life is not a dress rehearsal, this is it, so be courageous and live with gusto! Leave no room for regrets. Keep going forward. How do you live in 3D when life feels like listening to a scratchy old record? The answer is found in passion. Seek it. Explore. Find passion living, breathing and acting in the world around you. Because passion is contagious. Of key importance in your passionate experience is that in order to recognise it, you must know it. Whatever inspires you, is a mirror, a mirror that is placed at a precise angle to the sun to reflect the light and ignite a flame within you. Inevitably, there will be a point in life where you want to give up, when it seems easier to do nothing. Realign your self. Dig deep and remember what it felt like to be passionate. In our most dispossessed, unpassionate moments, we rely on our remembrance and our dreams. Our dreams inspire passion, too.

There are many other factors that contribute to weight loss but it is clear that food intolerance, together with food input, and energy output, all contribute to energy balance in the body. The regulation of food intake in the body is a complex process which involves biochemical signals from many sources including the brain, gastrointestinal tract, fat stores and the pancreas. Even fat cells play important roles in energy storage, fatty acid metabolism and glucose regulation. The digestive system needs to process and deliver nutrients to the whole body. A stressed digestive system, trying to cope with food intolerances, is less able to process energy and nutrients for the rest of the body. More than 80% of the body’s immune system is in the gut so when the immune response is triggered, the body feels that it is ‘under siege’, thus hoarding supplies, storing fluid and increasing weight.

trigger foods & you By Dr. Gill Hart

Understanding intolerance for healthy weight loss. As a preview to her talks at the Your Health Show, Dr. Gill Hart explains the link between food intolerances and body weight and shape. Recent research published in the Journal of Obesity & Weight Loss Therapy has suggested a direct relationship between food intolerance and weight gain. Cutting out ‘trigger foods’ could be a healthy way to speed up weight loss. The research showed that eliminating certain foods, based on individual IgG food intolerance test results, saw reductions in weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumference along with improvements in quality of life - including physical and emotional well-being, mental health, social life, pain levels and vitality.

It can also answer the age old question so many of us have voiced, “I’m eating healthy, I’m exercising. So why are the pounds not falling off?!” Sidione Price, aged 26 is one of many people that struggled with this. Sidione was told by her doctor that her excessive weight was down to irritable bowel syndrome but when Sidione’s colleague recommended that she take the food intolerance test from YorkTest, she thought she’d give it a try. The results showed that Sidione was reacting to cow’s milk, yeast and carrots; quite a surprise for her. The test, along with nutritional support, helped Sidione to alter her eating habits. She began opting for almond and soya milk instead of cow’s milk, and swapped wine for spirits due to the high yeast content of wine, and steered clear of dressings and sauces that can contain yeast too. In the months that followed, Sidione lost over 4 stone, and is now a healthy size 12 compared to her peak at size 18.

WHAT TYPES OF INTOLERANCES ARE MOST LIKELY TO CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN? Every individual has a unique biochemical make-up, even to others with similar conditions. On average, people with food intolerances show reactivity to 5 or 6 different foods so it’s almost impossible to identify which types of intolerances are important without conducting a test. Finding out what these are with a test also means you can talk to experts about nutritional support that is specific to you. HOW CAN IDENTIFYING YOUR INTOLERANCES IMPROVE YOUR OVERALL HEALTH? The symptoms of food intolerance can vary greatly but it has been shown that removal of foods from the diet that the body is reacting to can improve a vast array of health issues and, as in Sidione’s case, can also help you lose weight. Food intolerance testing provides invaluable information about what is actually going on in your body. Start changing your diet to suit YOU.

The Your Health Show is on at the RDS, Dublin on the 14th and 15th of September 2013. Dr. Gill Hart will be talking at the show on both days and will be available for questions on Stand 83. body intelligence By Steve Haines

How your body works & heals from within. mechanisms of renewal that have their basis in how the body was formed during its embryonic and fetal development. These forces often lie dormant in the background, only to be catalysed into action through the right touch.

We can learn to know our bodies and develop a much greater awareness than is common today. In great awareness, tremendous detail of the anatomy comes to us as we learn to discriminate among the different structures and processes going on within us. This leads to an exquisite sensitivity that revolutionises the body chemistry, the muscles and joints, the heart and blood flow and the nervous system; resulting in a more balanced, stronger and energised state of being. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can make this level of awareness possible. A practitioner touches the client’s body with a highly developed sense of his or her own system and a honed ability to listen through touch; creating a space that is both stimulatory, reflective and therapeutic. We each have the ability to creatively reorganise our structure, but this can only be tapped into through this relationship with another. The body can change and adjust from within itself, through its own body intelligence. All that’s necessary is the right environment, which is supplied by the practitioner’s touch and presence. They can listen to the shape of things. When touch is able to open up to health and deeply acknowledge the overwhelming strength and order in our own body, a revolution takes place within, producing new forms. Tissues and structures automatically shift and adjust in a sequence and order that is emerging from within the body system not from outside. A Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist is like an advocate of the client’s physiology. They work with you to empower your body to drop into its deeper

“The body can change and adjust from within itself, through its own body intelligence.” When health is sought, traumatic patterns, pain and suffering can be smoothly synthesised into a new order as the body dissolves into the deep, fluid state that underlies the physical. This is a medium for the nervous system to regulate, muscles to relax and organs to transpose to a new chemistry. In the shifts and adjustments, there is greater freedom of movement at many levels. Our bodies hold huge possibilities for recovery and regeneration. Joints that are painful and distorted can become at ease and mobile, tissues that are inflamed and sensitive can repair, organs that are constricted and overloaded can function smoothly and body systems that are disjointed and out of sync can communicate and work together again. This is health, the smooth interaction of all the elements of the body. The body will feel open, with a sense of glide and freedom as the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist facilitates the life forces already present within you. Latent patterns of emotion and mental states emerge and resolve with the physiological changes to produce systemic reorganisation. When change takes place across the whole body system, there is deep integration, and longterm resolution of suffering is possible. divine instincts By Ruth Carson

Expressing divinity and finding love.

Neale Donald Walsch is author of Conversations with God and the recently published The Only Thing That Matters. Ruth Carson finds out more about love, God and what really matters. How has your dialogue with God helped you in your own relationships? It’s helped me to understand the nature of love and how to experience it and how to express it. I understand that love is a simple process by which we see ourselves in another. When we look across the room or across the street or across the world, all you are seeing is another part of ourselves and another aspect of ourselves. I believe that love is unconditional and if I believe that God’s love is unconditional, then it is my opportunity and my invitation from life to love others unconditionally as well. That is, to love others as I hope that God loves me, to pass on God’s love to everyone whose life I touch. So I’ve learnt that love understands all and blesses all and relieves everyone of the need for forgiveness from me or from God and that in fact love is really all there is.

28

What advice would you give to people looking for love? Simply walk through your life as the grandest, romantic partner that anyone could ever have and how to do that will be made known to you in every moment with everyone whose life you touch. If you walk through the airport and you see a person who is looking a little upset about something, walk up to him and say, “I’m sorry I don’t mean to be intrusive but you look a bit worried. Is there any way at all that I might be able to help you?” If you see a lady walking down the street, and she seems to be having difficulty meeting whatever challenge the moment is presenting, say to her “Hello I’m sorry if I’m out of line, I don’t mean to be, please tell me if I am but it feels as if I might be able to assist you in some way. Is there something I might do for you?” If you say to your friend/lover/someone who you know a little better, “Do you know that I love you completely, without you needing to give me anything or do anything for me, I just totally get who you are, just the way you are, right now”. If you say these things to everyone you meet, everyone whose life

you touch, something very interesting will happen, people will fall in love with you, right and left, all over the place, everyone will fall in love with you. With adverse or challenging relationships what would you advise? Conversations with God tells us nobody does anything inappropriate given their model of the world. All we have to do then is understand their model of the world, it is really quite simple. I would try to follow the injunction of The Bible. Judge not and neither condemn. Raise not your fist to the darkness and curse the darkness not but be light onto the darkness. Often people don’t react this way, why? Not everybody does because most people believe in the illusion of separation. That is they imagine themselves to be separate, from everybody and everything else.

the soul which tells you inevitably and invariably in every moment of now what divinity would do. And for you what is the only thing that matters? The only thing that matters is, whether we are expressing divinity at the highest level at this moment that our present understanding will allow. Life offers us an opportunity to completely express the divinity that we are in every single golden moment of now. If we express divinity, our life will always work out, our life will always be a blessed and wonderful and a joyful experience no matter what is happening, whether we are rich or poor, healthy or ill, young or old, or whatever situation or circumstance we find ourselves in. The exterior conditions and elements of our life will have virtually no effect on us. That’s exactly what Nelson

“The expression of divinity is our highest and most fundamental instinct.” The illusion of separation creates a second illusion, the need to survive. The survival instinct is not the basic instinct of humanity; divinity is the basic instinct of humanity. The expression of divinity is our highest and most fundamental instinct. But the problem with humanity is that unless we are faced with such extraordinary human circumstances we rarely react that way. We generally react in the way that we think we have to, given the idea that we think we are separate from everybody else and given the notion that our chief requirement is to survive. How do you connect with this basic instinct of divinity? By listening to the urging and the calling of the soul which can never be not heard. It is always heard and can never be mistaken as it always speaks to us of the highest love, and the grandest joy, the greatest freedom and the largest aspect of who we really are. This is not done by thinking about it. You know when a person runs into a burning building to save someone, there is no thinking involved. You simply sidestep the mind. You have to be literally out of your mind. You simply listen to the instinctive, instructive message of

Mandela did. He lived in a jail cell for 26 years, yet his external environment, the place in which he found himself, was irrelevant to him. He chose to express divinity even in jail, the result of which was his jailers came to love him. They asked him for advice. He became a spiritual and philosophical counsellor to everyone who worked in that jail. When he was released, they wept because they felt they had lost their best friend. That’s what happens when an ordinary person decides that the only thing that matters is completion of the experience and the expression of divinity itself at the highest level that the present moment and our current understanding will allow. That’s all Jesus did, that’s all the Buddha did, that’s all that Mother Teresa did and that’s all that Nelson Mandela did and that is all that we are invited to do.

Neale and his wife, Em Claire travel the world, sharing the messages of Conversations with God. Neale will be appearing at I Can Do It! in Glasgow and in London this October. www.CWGPortal.com www.emclairepoet.com www.hayhouse.co.uk/ICDI

TAI CHI: AWARENESS, DEVELOPMENT & INTEGRATION By Master Charles Thackaberry Tai Chi is the balance of opposites. To change, shift and create balance, the first step is to be aware and feel the different aspects we need to work with. This can range from simply coordinating the hands and feet, to balancing practical everyday life with spiritual ideals. Balanced development is not always about working on our obvious talents. We need the strength and courage to develop our weakest links too. In modern society, we’ve focused on developing the mind and spirit and often leave the body and emotions behind. Tai Chi gives the mind

that healing feeling Approaches to health as unique and as varied as you.

Each of us is an organic, biological being. We’re also blessed with the thoughts, spirit and energies that although non-physical, affect how our organic matter reacts and functions. Empowering, holistic approaches to health develop further every day to become as unique and varied as each of our individual needs. We share the insights of some of Ireland’s leading practitioners, on avenues that have brought them and their clients that healing feeling.

The process of integration needs patience, practice and a non-judgemental approach; learning to listen, trust and allowing ourselves to experience failures as well as successes. DANCE: BRINGING THE SOUL BACK TO SUNDAY By Carol McInerney Throughout history, people have used movement to celebrate, pray, connect and heal ourselves and our communities. Growing up in Ireland, Sunday mornings meant going to church. It was intended as a special day for people to gather in a sacred place and recognise the need to nourish our souls. With the gradual breakdown of religious systems, much of this tradition has been lost. One of the inspirations to create ‘Soul Sunday’ came from our experiences of dancing on Sunday mornings with communities in other countries. It touches my heart to be part of a room of people

moving from the inside out; to experience the magic and vulnerability of getting to know more of ourselves, and each other, through dance. Eating together releases oxytocin, the feel-good hormone that increases trust and bonding. Sitting down to eat together after the dance gives people time to get to know each other, catch up with friends, make new ones and fosters a spirit of openness and togetherness. Dancing nourishes and heals me. It teaches me self-acceptance, relaxes my mind, opens my heart to community and strengthens my relationship with my body. And it’s fun! It is all the things I searched for but never experienced in the rituals of Sundays in church. Come as you are and celebrate what is. soulsunday.net

SHIATSU: RELEASING, RELIEVING & MOVING FORWARD

SYSTEMATIC KINESIOLOGY: REVEALING WHAT YOUR BODY KNOWS

By Rebecca Allen

By Siobhan Guthrie

I found Shiatsu when grieving the passing of my father. I had no idea what to expect during my treatment but found myself experiencing profound relaxation and letting go of muscles I hadn’t even realised were tense. As well as the physical release, emotions moved, changed and clarified within me. Shiatsu helped me to move forward in the complexities of the grieving process. Having supported my father through setbacks, letting go of the trauma was difficult, even when it was safe to do so. Shiatsu allowed me to progress naturally. It has continued to be an important and valued aid through my life journey and personal growth. I have turned to it for help with fertility, the loss of my mother and the break up of my marriage. Over time, Shiatsu has moved me so much that I decided to become a practitioner myself. I wanted to give something back. Now, I use Shiatsu and guided meditation to help my clients reduce and manage stress. This allows your body to focus its energies on staying healthy, enabling you to overcome illness and maintain constant repair. I have the pleasure of supporting people during illness and towards wellness, in tandem with their medical treatment. Drawing from personal experiences, I also specialise in working with recently separated or bereaved women.

The holistic approach to health acknowledges all areas of life’s physical, emotional, nutritional, energies and spirituality, they are all interconnected. Two key factors that that we look at are the thoughts, beliefs and interpretations you have of your world, and the daily food choices you make. Muscle testing helps us reveal what your body unconsciously says about it all too. When it comes to your health, rather than just looking at the thing that needs fixing, we examine what might underlie the root cause. A practitioner will ask you about what you eat, how you think, feel and react. Are you a busy parent? Do you love your job or dislike it? How well does your digestive system function? It’s all relevant. If you are sensitive to wheat, you may know its immediate, physical effects on your body, but did you know it could be affecting your mood? Over 55 health issues have been linked to gluten sensitivities but many people are never diagnosed. With more gluten in wheat today than ever before, it’s worth getting tested or considering avoidance for a few weeks to see how it could be affecting you. Instinctively, deep inside you already know what is right for you. Don’t ignore the signals your body is giving you, take a moment to listen.

sexual chemistry is it real love? part 2

By Dawn Cartwright

When, how and why to enter into a sexual relationship. Desire and attraction are the primordial beginnings of every shimmering sunrise, every tinkling ankle bell, every human being, every sacred moment. From the Tantric perspective, the spark of attraction is, in itself, conception - a new facet of existence birthed into being through love. How do we enter these feelings fully? How do we know when, how and why to enter into a sexual relationship?

1 Open Your Heart. A sexual relationship may last a few seconds, in a glance of recognition, or it might last a lifetime. What if all you shared was a moment looking in a window on Grafton Street? Every relationship, whether momentary or long-term, is an invitation to enter life more fully than ever before. Enjoy each moment to its fullest and let go of the outcome - open your heart.

32

2 Trust Your Body. Sexual attraction is a force of nature. Trust what you feel and let go of trying to figure out what’s next. Dive into the attraction, get closer to the experience inside yourself first, before you get into bed. Far too many of us jump into a sexual relationship too soon, leaving important parts of ourselves behind. Give the attraction time to land. Give yourself time to catch up.

3 Step Into the New. Sexual energy is spiritual rocket fuel. It will bring to the surface anything that’s standing in the way of you opening your heart and body 100%. Insecurities, self-judgments and past hurts are abandoned parts of ourselves that are waiting to be reclaimed. Take time to feel what arises alongside the ecstasy of the attraction. Let the past reveal its gifts - and step into the new.

4 Get Honest. What do you expect from a sexual relationship? What do you expect from a partner? Don’t side-step this one by claiming you have no expectations - we all have them. Take a stand for who you are. Are you looking for a casual one-time encounter? Are you looking for long-term commitment? Are you looking for affection that doesn’t include genital contact? Do you enjoy flirting? No matter who you are, no matter what you’re looking for, there are hundreds, if not thousands, looking for someone exactly like you. 5 Open To Possibility. Spend time with the person you’re attracted to - outside the bedroom. Not every sexual attraction is meant to be lived out between the sheets. Explore the mystery that is this other person. Imagine you’re mapping an uncharted wilderness. Be curious. Ask questions. The one you’re feeling so attracted to may end up being the lover of your dreams, the husband you’ve been waiting for, the friend you need, the colleague that’s a perfect fit for your start up. Sexual attraction is all about creativity open to possibility.

“A sexual relationship may last a few seconds, in a glance of recognition, or it might last a lifetime.”

7 Build A Container. Once you feel ready to take the relationship to the next level, have a conversation about exclusivity, open relationship, sexual history, STIs, birth control and what you’d each want to do if a pregnancy happened. Build a container for the type of sexual relationship the two of you wish to create. If you’ve taken your time with the other steps, nothing should come as a surprise once you’re here. 8 Let Go. Relax, take your time, enjoy. Be together in the ways that bring each of you joy. Make it the first time, every time. Keep an eye out for our next issue, as Dawn shares the secrets of creating a tantric lovemaking ritual. Dawn Cartwright is a Tantric visionary, sacred writer, and innovator in bio-energetic Tantra fusion. dawncartwright.com

The Good Life 2.0 community resilience in a changing world

34 living in an eco-neighbourhood By Davie Philip

A peek inside the Cloughjordan community. In this regular column, Davie Philip from ‘Cultivate’ explores how we make the transition to a more sustainable way of life, one that is community based, ethical, healthy and resilient. For the last two years of this column, I have been exploring how we can make our communities better places to live and how we might develop the resilience to cope and adapt to the challenges ahead. I’ve looked at cooperative approaches to creating livelihoods and growing food, explored how we nurture healthier approaches to living together and introduced tools to make the transition to a better world. Most of the things I have been talking about here in Positive Life are being applied and developed in the small village of Cloughjordan where I live and work. Although I often refer to the Ecovillage project in these articles, I have never really introduced what is actually going on in this little corner of North Tipperary. CLOUGHJORDAN Cloughjordan is a heritage village located less than two hours from Dublin and is

reachable by train. In the past the village had suffered from population decline and some of its key services were under threat before the Ecovillage project first arrived in 2003. The project has now attracted over 65 families to move to Cloughjordan contributing to the flourishing of the whole village and is now seen as one of the healthiest communities in Ireland. In the last two years, it has won the National Green Community Award, in 2012 was voted runner up in an Irish Times contest looking for the Best Place to Live in Ireland and this year has been nominated for an Irish Pride of Place Award and a UN Award for liveable communities. ECO-NEIGHBOURHOOD The term Ecovillage is actually a little misleading, as we are very much a neighbourhood that is experimenting with good practice in community regeneration. Our main pedestrian entrance is in the centre of Cloughjordan’s Main Street. The Ecovillage is a mixed-use development and is being developed by Sustainable Projects Ireland, a registered educational charity

and national NGO. I was one of the first members of the project back in 1999 a few years after I got into sustainability. The first meetings of the original members took place in the Dublin Food Co-op where many of us were active, and the principles of cooperatives are core to our objectives. Our purpose is to develop a sustainable community that can serve as an education, enterprise and research resource for all. PERMACULTURE We used a design system called Permaculture to integrate the buildings, woodlands, agriculture and renewable energy elements within a living community on the 67 acre estate. Zoning for sustainable development and planning permission for 3 community buildings and 130 homes was granted in 2005, which included 16 live-work units to encourage livelihoods where people are living. Work began on the infrastructure in February 2007 and construction of the first homes began in March 2009. By March 2013 fifty households had moved into the Eco-neighbourhood.

happy teenagers By Anna Land

Feed their focus, development & positivity.

36 This is the month that teenagers head back to school. School poses many challenges; new timetables, new teachers, a whole new routine, long days, exam challenges, interaction with many peers again etc. Self-confidence, positive mental health and good coping mechanisms increase a teenager’s resilience and ability to embrace it all. Anna Land, teacher and CNM Nutritional Therapist, tells us how we can really help our teenagers through good nutrition and good gut health!

Gut health is fundamental in wellness. Our language contains many references to the gut; ‘to have the stomach for something’, ‘to have guts’, ‘go with your gut’. Our ability to take in goodness from our environment is dependent on the ability of the gut to digest, absorb and assimilate. The microbial balance in our gut can affect both digestion and absorption but it can also affect our elimination and immunity. Gut dysbiosis is an imbalance in the colonies of the bowel flora and can be caused by stress, excess sugar, low fibre intake, antibiotics/various drug therapies and decreased immunity. Eating regularly throughout the day is very important to sustain a student’s energy levels to cater for their busy schedules.

As a teacher, I see what many of my students eat on a regular basis. It is great to see some students bringing in their packed lunches comprising of wholemeal bread sandwiches, salads, fruit, left-over vegetable stir-fries from the previous evening’s dinner and water. I do see a lot of students who eat white baguettes packed with processed meats, sugary carbonated drinks, packets of biscuits and crisps. Excessive consumption of these processed foods can cause an inflammatory response in the gut. It can also have an effect on a student’s ability to focus in class, concentration levels and overall personal ability to perform effectively in school. So to ensure your teens feel their best in school, keep their lunches wholesome. A student’s mental health may also be affected by what they consume. The

brain and gut develop from the same part of the human embryo and therefore share many nerve endings and chemical transmitters to which it remains linked through a large nucleus. This collection of nerve cells is partly responsible for controlling anxiety and fear. In animal studies, low grade gastrointestinal inflammation results in anxiety like behaviours. But supplementation with probiotics is associated with a reduction in these behaviours. Serotonin is a happy hormone associated with wellbeing. 95% of the body’s serotonin is found in the gastrointestinal tract. It is manufactured in our bodies from the amino acid tryptophan; this is derived from the food we eat. Serotonin influences not only mood but can affect memory and mental clarity and is dependent on good gut health. Students and their parents can follow these simple steps to begin re-balancing the gut flora and optimise mood and mental clarity. Steps You Can Take 1 Eat a fibre-rich, whole foods diet–it should be rich in beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables–all of which feed good bugs. Raw foods are also excellent for nutrients and have serotonin

boosting properties. 2 Limit sugar, processed foods, animal fats and animal protein—these provide food for unhealthy bacteria. 3 Avoid the use of antibiotics, acid blockers and anti-inflammatories—these all have a negative effect on gut flora. 4 Take probiotics daily – these healthy, friendly floras can improve your digestive health reduce inflammation and allergy and help increase correct absorption. 5 To support the growth of probiotic bacteria, also choose foods known as prebiotics that naturally contain lots of soluble fibre, such as bananas, garlic, asparagus, artichokes, honey, leeks and onions. 6 Help the good bacteria in the gut by including yoghurt, sauerkraut, miso,

“Serotonin is a happy hormone associated with wellbeing and 95% of the body’s serotonin is found in the gastrointestinal tract.” garlic and onions, probiotics which include lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, keep the lining of the colon healthy and improve gut motility. 7 Add antiparasitic herbs into your meals, such as thyme, oregano, garlic and cloves, help to destroy worms and parasites in the gut. 8 Include foods rich in tryptophan; almonds, bananas, beans, cheeses, chicken, eggs and oily fish, turkey and yoghurt.

positive food

Beetroot, squash and green bean bourguignon with caramelised onion, brazil nut and ketaifi filled Portobello mushrooms. I recently came across a recipe for beetroot bourguignon, which is an interesting twist on the classic beef bourguignon. I have made a slightly different version here with some of my own additions. This dish can be made gluten free by omitting the ketaifi pastry. Serves 4 For the bourguignon: Sunflower oil for frying 1 large onion, peeled and roughly chopped 1 peeled and grated beetroot 1 peeled and grated carrot Mushroom stalks from Portobellos (see below) 1 teaspoon of cumin Bulb of garlic Few twigs of thyme 8 baby potatoes, sliced 8 vacuum packed beetroot Pinch of each, ground star anise and clove 100 grams of green beans, halved 1 medium squash, peeled and cubed A few bay leaves Dessertspoon of mustard

Sea salt and freshly ground pepper 250 ml red wine 500 ml stock Seasoning For the mushroom: 4 good sized Portobello mushrooms, stalks removed (see previous) 1 large onion thinly sliced 3 cloves of garlic Dessertspoon of nutritional yeast 50 ml tamari 200 grams of brazil nuts, toasted and ground 50 grams of ketaifi pastry (available in good ethnic food stores) Seasoning

1 Bourguignon Heat some oil in a large heavy based saucepan and add the onion. Sweat for a minute add the wine, thyme, bay and garlic. Allow to reduce and add the carrot, beetroot, stalks, cumin and stock. Leave to simmer over a low heat for about 15 minutes. Roast the potatoes and squash in a little sunflower oil with a pinch of salt on a parchment lined tray for about 20 minutes. Slice the vacuum packed beetroot into wedges and tip into a bowl with the ground spices and a little sunflower oil, spread the beetroot over another lined tray and roast for about 25 minutes at 190 degrees. Blanch the green beans. Remove the bay leaves from the sauce, add the mustard and puree. Using the back of a ladle, pass the mixture through a sieve into a clean pot, add the vegetables and season to taste. You may need to add a little water. 2 Mushrooms Sauté the onion in sunflower oil for about 5 minutes, add garlic and tamari. After 5 minutes add the nutritional yeast and the ground brazil nuts and seasoning. Sprinkle some oil over the destalked mushrooms and top them with the nut mixture. Open the ketaifi and chop it into two inch pieces and top each mushroom with a little pastry. Bake the mushrooms in the bottom of the oven at 190 degrees for about 20 minutes. Serve the bourguignon in a shallow bowl topped with a mushroom. Panko crusted coconut arnacini with spiced tofu, daikon noodles and chilli-plum jam Arancini are traditionally breadcrumb coated deep fried risotto balls said to have originated in Sicily. They are most often filled with cheese, mince or peas and are commonly served with a dipping sauce. Here I have put a slightly Asian twist on them. A gluten free version of this can be made using black and white sesame seeds rather than the panko and by substituting rice flour for the regular flour. Serves 4-6

41 For the rice: 500 grams arborio rice 1 onion finely chopped 1 thumb of ginger 1 stalk of lemongrass Zest of 1 lime 1 red chilli 2 cloves of garlic 150 ml of mirin 1 tin of coconut milk 600 ml hot water Seasoning For the tofu: 350 grams of tofu, chopped into very small cubes 50 ml of tamari 30 ml of sesame oil Pinch of five spice (optional) Teaspoon of agave or brown sugar

For the chilli-plum jam: 1 red chilli, finely chopped 200 grams of plums ½ a thumb size piece of ginger ½ red pepper, deseeded & finely chopped 2 heaped dessertspoons of sugar 30 ml rice vinegar Pinch of salt For the daikon noodles: 1 medium daikon peeled 1 dessertspoon of chopped coriander 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds toasted Dessertspoon of sesame oil Pinch of salt Dessertspoon of lime juice For the panko coating: 75 grams of panko breadcrumbs 2-3 heaped dessertspoons of flour mixed with some water to make a batter

1 Puree the ginger, lemongrass, garlic and chilli in a food processor; add a little water to make a paste. Heat a little sunflower oil in a heavy bottomed saucepan. Add the onion and spices. Sautee for a minute, add the Arborio rice. Stir rapidly to coat the rice. Add the mirin and lime and leave to absorb. Whisk the coconut and hot water until combined. Add this to the rice ladle by ladle until it is all absorbed. Season, and leave to cool before use. 2 Tofu Combine all ingredients, spread out and bake on a parchment lined tray at 200 degrees for about 15 minutes. 3 Jam simmer all ingredients for about 30 minutes, puree and pass through a sieve. 4 Noodles Peel the daikon and shred into noodles with a julienne peeler or for a flatter noodle, use a regular peeler. Combine with the other ingredients. 5 Arnacini From your left to right you will need firstly the rice then the tofu, a bowl with the batter, followed by a plate with breadcrumbs and lastly a parchment lined oven dish to bake them on. 6 Take a ball of rice slightly larger than a golf ball and flatten it out. Take a small amount of tofu, press it into the centre and fold the rice around to encase it. Roll the ball in the batter and then in the panko breadcrumbs and place it onto the lined tray. Repeat with the remaining mixture. Bake them in a preheated oven at 190 degrees for about 20-25 minutes, Serve immediately with the noodles and the jam. www.cornucopia.ie

short & sweet 43 an sanctóir, co. cork By Michael Tanner

Manifesting dreams into reality. If you’ve ever wondered what a dream looks like manifested into reality, through spirit and enthusiasm, look no further than ‘An Sanctóir’ in West Cork. A group in West Cork had a vision to create a community-owned, spiritually orientated centre. They formed a trust and borrowed money to buy 30 acres of land. With the skilled help of many volunteers, the wonderful, octagonal building, complete with under-floor heating, was completed in 1996. Since the doors of An Sanctóir opened, classes in movement, meditation, yoga, song and dance have

been held on a weekly basis. A successful kindergarten has also been established on-site and volunteers help to maintain the land. It was the home of the iconic ‘Frog Fair’ for many years and other much anticipated annual activities include the ‘Easter Adventure’ and the kids’ summer camp. Private functions such as naming ceremonies, weddings and memorials are becoming more popular events to hold there too. People appreciate the joyful energy created by those who have used the space over the years.

This year the Bliss Festival, a three-day focus on Tantra, was a great success and the New Era Forum in September promises to be very exciting too. The forum will see international authors and psychics discussing the changes we’re experiencing and suggesting empowering solutions to survive the changes. To organise your own event, big or small, in An Sanctóir, or for more information on services provided, just log on to our website. ansanctoir.ie

44 a healing history By Donn Brennan

Ancient Ayurveda still harmonising our health. A recently published document on health* revealed that one of the biggest risk factors today is high blood pressure. But people are choosing all sorts of options to combat this and we’re seeing lots of success through Ayurvedic techniques. Ayurveda describes three causes or ‘types’ for health - ‘vata’, ‘pitta’ and ‘kapha’. Knowing your type helps you eat and exercise in ways that suit you. Appropriate routines, diets and supplements can help balance your type. A spa treatment, involving the continuous flow of oil over the forehead while lying relaxed, can also be helpful, as is TM or Transcendental Meditation. A patient of mine began to practice TM and saw his high blood pressure decrease. After four months, he stopped but discovered his blood pressure was raised again. Two years on, he practices TM regularly and his BP continues to stay normal. The American Heart Foundation has stated that TM has the evidence to support it being prescribed by doctors for hypertension. The DASH diet is beginning to receive scientific verification too. It may sound hurried but what it stands for is ‘Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.’ Other important approaches include healthy weight loss for those who are obese, dietary supplements, including garlic and omega-3 oils and replacing caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs, sugar, refined foods and saturated fats with foods that are more beneficial to your well-being. *The Global Burden of Disease’. 486 scientists from 302 institutions in 50 countries contributed.

herbal teas & health tinctures By Dr. Dilis Clare

Sharing the secrets of herbs for health.

Meeting new people, the question I’m most frequently asked is why I became a herbalist after years in general practice. There are several answers, but the reason I continue to practice herbal medicine is because of the power of herbs to treat the discomforts of illnesses commonly affecting people. Herbs are both symptom relieving and healing. For example, if you suffer from IBS, you want to feel less discomfort and have more energy, you want to maintain a sense of well-being and avoid recurrence when life gets stressful again. Herbal teas are particularly useful for treating and maintaining comfort and supporting normal digestive processes. Used over several months they can consolidate the healing effects. I use tinctures (herbs preserved and extracted

in dilute alcohol) combined with teas for the initial treatment and for flare-ups of distressing symptoms. In my clinic in Galway, I encourage patients to research the herbs I prescribe. The clinic was always intended to make herbs available to people and to share the medicinal benefits of herbs and how to use them. A wide range of herbs are available individually along with blends formulated for those happy to follow traditional

combinations recommended for various health issues and discomforts. Visit our website for useful leaflets and articles. You will also see a short film on making and using herbal teas as part of your daily routine. Dr. Dilis Clare MBBCh, DRCOG, BSc (Herbal Medicine), IIMH heathandherbs.ie

the best of both worlds Making business a pleasure.. Barbara Carolan, or ‘Babs’ as she is more affectionately known, set up ‘Yoga Boann’ along the beautiful banks of the River Nanny in Co. Meath. After years of teaching in Dublin, she wanted to make quality Yoga classes available to the people of Meath and Louth. She succeeded and provides a full weekly schedule of friendly, mixed-level, heated, Vinyasa flow classes. “One of the most positive aspects is the personal touch and the fact I can offer cheap rates… people are struggling but I encourage them to come. Some barter, some bring eggs, some do my nails, others pay me 5 euro, others go free but I have built up a community spirit and people enjoy that. That’s what I wanted.” Bab’s most recent addition to her studio has been to incorporate MiStudio Software to manage her business. “Even though it’s not a corporate or really busy studio, I use MiStudio Software to help me be more professional and to prompt my memory on people’s names when they enter the studio! I chose it because it’s an Irish company, it’s user friendly and it’s affordable.” Gary Corley, a practising Yogi who has visited India several times, developed and launched MiStudio after seeing how much

time is spent on the organisational side of businesses like Yoga Boann. He launched MiStudio to allow all sizes of studios, even smaller ones, to focus on the yoga and the teaching, and let the software run the management and organisational side. mistudiosoftware.com

godfrey goes gluten free Little changes with big impacts.

Working as a pharmacist, I see people present with symptoms that are likely diet-related every day. My ears prick up when people describe big hangovers after little beer - but none with low-gluten whiskey or vodka, or buy Motilium a day after pizza. Having worked in Ireland, mainland Europe and Asia, I’ve seen how diet is key.

“My ears prick up when people describe big hangovers after little beer” The most satisfying part of my job is seeing inspiring people joining the dots and seizing control of their health. Godfrey, an MS sufferer in Gorey, tamed his MS through diet changes. His MS isn’t completely gone, but being aware of how his diet affects him gives him more power over his health and life. One of the tests used to monitor MS is how well you balance with your eyes closed. Godfrey can not only stand with his eyes shut now, but he’s brimming with energy and has even inspired his GP to change her diet. Matrix drops & harmonising your frequencies.

info@pilgrimholisticcentre.ie

When your body and the frequencies it produces are tuned to perfection, you create harmony in the physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies, resulting in balance, creating happiness and positively influencing your whole life. Buddha stated that the human body contains and is made from 108 elements and that these elements must be in balance for true health. Our computer scans the energetic information of the aura to process over 8 million pieces of data contained in the human energetic field. Individual spiritual attributes, thought patterns, both positive and negative characteristics and more can be detected. The computer uses the information to select, from 900 possible Matrix Drops, the perfect remedies for any individual. Using these drops it is possible to overcome undesirable patterns of behaviour, as the drops carry information infused into the first realm of divine nature - water. They are capable of exerting a dynamic power that permeates every field of energy and can help clear physical, mental, emotional and spiritual blocks. If you believe in the power of nature, try the Matrix Drops and discover the message that resides within for you. The drops can even be used on seemingly irreversible health challenges. For us, there are no patients, only friends who wish to grow, learn and change, to become conscious and awakened human beings. The Matrix Drops are an opportunity for healing, and helping you as you follow your life path. avalonmagichealth.com

unleash your healing powers By Mark Usher

Releasing your innate healing energies. “Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.” Hippocrates Modern, medical healing has focused predominantly on man’s ability to cure another man’s disease and not as much on man’s capacity to heal himself. However, remarkable results occur when the natural, healing forces within are harnessed. The key to accessing your own healing capacity is to become informed about why you have developed your disease or ailment and what you can proactively do to improve your health. It is only through being wellinformed that you can access the full potential power of your daily choices. I define CHOICEs as Conscious Healing Opportunities Initiating Consistent Elevation - elevation of whatever brings you happiness and health. If you see each choice as a liberating, healing

opportunity, you begin to tap into the raw potential of the universal ‘Law of the Harvest’ - what you sow, so shall you reap. Disease in the body not responding to treatments often indicates that you are not harnessing your own healing forces. Look to create your own unique healing masterpiece by putting into daily practice transformative CHOICEs designed to improve your overall wellbeing and to eliminate the unwanted illness. Infinite CHOICEs exist from optimising dietary intake and exercising daily to learning new ways to relax in the face of challenge. Be informed in your CHOICEs, be inspired in your actions and BE healthy in your life. our life as druids By Eimear Burke & Howard Campbell

Spirituality as nature intended.

As Druids, our spirituality is interwoven through our daily lives. Our connection with nature is always present. In our home, we created a wild garden where the trees, plants, birds and insects live freely. This allows for the engagement of our spirits with theirs. Our own natures and relationships with each other are also part of this natural world. We look to the landscape and seasons as a metaphor for how we live our lives. Following the wheel of the year brings us into harmony with this world and the otherworld. Our joys, worries and pleasures and how they connect us are also part of the natural world, which we honour with our attention. The landscape and how our ancestors related to it are a source of

fascination - earthworks and megaliths aligned to phases of the sun and moon. To engage with all of the above we use our spiritual senses, intuition, imagination and ceremonies that connect us to the seasons and our ancestors. We also engage with the sciences and history to widen our understanding of ourselves and of the world around us. The arts are a valuable way of communicating aspects of the natural world and ourselves which are otherwise difficult to articulate. Our ceremonies are followed by a ‘Night Court’, a space for the arts including poetry, storytelling, songs, and music. The Druid’s path enriches and nourishes all aspects of our life together. kilkennydruidry.com

achieving freedom

51

By Martina Finnerty PhD

Out of belief and into knowing.

We, as a race, are in transition out of the unconscious yet absolute influence of restrictive Belief Systems (BS) and conditioning and into our innate, infinite, loving, potential. Most of the time, the untrained mind is oblivious. Everyday decisions and perceptions occur under the influence of BS. Why? Because functioning through BS energy “feels” completely real and true. The untrained mind, without the necessary consciousness, entertains BS as if it was a truth and our life is influenced

accordingly. A basic example is that we believe we can’t therefore we don’t. Anything that leads us away from our progressive energies and infinite love, is the result of established false BS. However, a revolution is afoot. We can connect with and live through our inherent source KNOWING. To achieve this freedom, we need to KNOW the difference, truly know, at every level of consciousness. Such a KNOWING creates action and positive change. Connection with our authentic KNOWING empowers us. It is the

source of miracles and healings beyond intellectual comprehension at this time. KNOWING is not just an exercise of studying facts; it is an experience, an elevation of consciousness brought about by the presentation and exploration of a series of facts, in a manner that makes the total experience greater than the sum of its parts. The Power of Knowing is a unique and simple series of classes and workshops providing the platform for this experience. Come join the revolution! thepowerofknowing.ie

reactivate your health By Elva Carri

Supplement your youthful energy. According to the creators of Revive Active, they’re already seeing a 65% retention rate for online sales of the Irish made supplement and getting rave reviews from users and advocates, including Dr. Dilis Clare of Health & Herbs, Galway and Erina MacSweeney of Irish Heart Health. The water soluble supplement contains 26 active ingredients. It has no artificial flavourings or colourings and they’ve used stevia as a sweetener. What makes it unique, is the high importance they’ve placed on the quality and sourcing of the ingredients – the creators of the supplement refuse to compromise here, because they know that’s what’s going to benefit the people taking it. The combinations of ingredients will increase energy levels, slow down the ageing process, promote bone density and generate healthy blood flow. And it doesn’t just come

highly recommended by those who’ve experienced the benefits; it’s all based on proven scientific pairings and formulas. The product is unique in the levels of L-arginine and L-Citrulline it contains, boasting higher levels than any other product. One of Dr. Dillis Clare’s patients was on two blood pressure tablets a day

when he came to see her and was already doing a lot of things right in terms of diet and exercise. Now he’s on two Revive Actives a day and only one blood pressure tablet on alternate days, with less side effects, better energy and an improved quality of life. www.reviveactive.com

When it comes to crop circles the inevitable question “How are they made?” is unavoidable. Although important, this question has not been satisfactorily answered so my default position has always been to encourage people to look beyond this. The crop circle mystery begins to reveal its beauty when you cease asking, “How are they made?” and rather ask “What do they say?” What do I mean by, What do they say? I often claim there are codes of information contained within crop circles. Let’s take an example of one that displays beauty in the most extraordinary way. Crooked Soley 2002 saw the arrival of a most majestic formation. On first inspection it’s a DNA strand wrapped around a circle. When we look at how the DNA strand is made, the magic begins to emerge. The DNA part of the circle is actually made up of many little squares or ‘diamonds’. Similarly, the flattened crop is laid down in the same square/ diamond effect. When we look at the numbers, something very cool indeed transpires. » 504 little squares make up the standing crop part of the DNA strand » 792 little squares are flattened surrounding the DNA strand.

This is a clear reference to » 5040 - The combined radius of the sun and moon in miles » 7920 - The diameter of the earth in miles

These numbers create a circle and square of equal perimeter. Where the circle represents heaven and the square represents earth. Perhaps the presence of a human DNA strand in this formation is highlighting our unique position in the universe. One interpretation points to our standing midway between heaven and earth and perhaps our task is to engage in the synthesis of both! mandalanature.com

be given significant spiritual keys to worldly power, derived from the realm of the miraculous. Our soul resources become amplified by the astrology of the Star of David - a force that will lift us to a powerful trajectory, as we truly acknowledge the heavenly power within, the power that reflects the perfection of the Source as a potential that rests in all of us. For this is in truth, who we truly are.

Witness the miracle in everything.

The doors of heaven are opening soon and for those who care to venture forth, an opportunity of great change is imminent. This is a remarkable time to acquire ascension experience, as an Astrological Star Tetrahedron opens in the heavens, signaled by the geometry of a Star of David and heralding us to open our Merkaba and ascend. Spiritual truth is always at work in the realm of the miraculous consciousness from which we arise. Einstein said, “There are two ways of living your life: one is by seeing nothing as a miracle, and the other is by seeing everything is a miracle!” and so we transform our mortal thoughts into immortal wonders. As a wonder from heaven, the Angels of Atlantis bring the miracle of sound to heal our bodies through an ancient harmonic that recognizes the Universe as being abundant with riches. So why not decide what you wish to manifest at this juncture? Chant the OM seven times with full-lunged gusto, and you will

food for a healthy heart! By Olive Curran DipNT, mNTOI

Because healthy hearts make happy heads. So Positive Life reader, let’s celebrate a long and healthy life by heading outdoors for some swift exercise. Breathe deeply and meditate to let go of stress and skip the stuff we know is doing us no favours. TOP NUTRITION TIPS FOR A HEALTHY HEART: 1 Switch to healthier fats: Reduce foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol and instead start including more avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, oily fish (salmon, sardines, and mackerel), nuts (walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts) and mixed seeds. 2 Introduce plant sterols: They help lower cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. 3 Increase fibrous foods: Wholegrain breads, pastas, quinoa, beans, lentils and oats. 4 Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables: They provide a multitude of antioxidants and phytochemicals, which have been shown to maintain a healthy heart and reduce blood pressure. Red and purple foods are particularly beneficial to the heart so

choose foods such as tomatoes, blueberries, purple grapes, figs, raspberries, strawberries, cherries and red apples. 5 Take Eskimo-3 fish oil daily: It has been shown to lower triglycerides, balance cholesterol, regulate heart rate and make blood platelets less sticky, overall improving heart health considerably. Take just 1 teaspoon daily to reap the benefits. “To ensure good health: eat lightly, breathe deeply, live moderately, cultivate cheerfulness, and maintain an interest in life.” ~ William Londen eskimo3.ie
