Each year the talent and excitement soars to new levels. With all the incredible talent that surrounds the yearly basketball festival, we’d like to take a minute to see where some of the best players from past SFIC Festival’s are now . . .
Myles Mack / St. Anthony HS Mack is currently a Junior Guard at Rutgers University. The Rutgers Guard led all Scarlett Knights in scoring last season and will be looked upon this year for additional scoring and leadership. Mack is from Paterson, NJ. Kyrie Irving / St. Patrick’s HS Irving is currently in his 3rd year in the NBA playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Irving attended Duke University before being drafted #1 overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. For his career, Irving has averaged 20.6 points per game. Irving was

born in Australia and raised in West Orange, NJ. Michael Rosario / St. Anthony HS Currently an Unrestricted Free Agent, Rosario pla yed four great collegiate seasons between Rutgers University and the University of Florida. Rosario also earned a silver medal playing for Puerto Rico in the 2012 FIBA Centrobasket Tournament. Rosario is from Jersey City, NJ. Myck Kabongo / St. Benedict’s Prep Currently playing for the Austin Toros in the NBA Development League, Kabongo played his collegiate basketball at the University of Texas where he averaged 14.6 points per game. Kabongo is from Zaire, was raised in Toronto, and played some of his high school basketball at St. Benedict’s Prep. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist / St. Patrick’s HS Currently playing in his 2nd NBA season for the Charlotte Bobcats,
Kidd-Gilchrist is averaging 9.1 points per game for the upstart Bobcats. Kidd-Gilchrist played collegiately at the University of Kentucky and was drafted 2nd overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. Kyle Anderson / St. Anthony HS Currently playing in his sophomore season at UCLA, Anderson was part of two undefeated teams while playing for Coach Hurley at St. Anthony HS. Anderson is averaging 14 points per game and 9 rebounds per game as a Bruin. Marcus Williams / St. Anthony HS Played collegiately at St. Francis (NY) where he averaged 9.4 points per game in his 2 seasons. Williams transferred to St. Francis (NY) from the Globe Institute of Technology. Williams went undrafted in the 2008 NBA Draft.

Players to Watch in This Year’s SFIC Basketball Festival As usual, the SFIC Basketball Festival has some outstanding high school talent. The following is a brief rundown of some of the talented players:
St. Benedict’s. The 6-5 Brisco is versatile on the court and will be a welcomed addition to Roselle Catholic with his scoring and leadership
Wade Baldwin / St. Joseph (Metuchen) Baldwin is a complete player who gets to the basket and handles the ball exceptionally well while being a threat from behind the arc and on the defensive side of the ball. The 6-3 senior guard will play at Vanderbilt next year.
Moustapha Diagne / Pope John The 6-8 center continues to improve his game in the low post. Diagne is able to play bigger than his height with his wing span and athleticism. Just a junior, Diagne will be a high nationally recruited big man.
Nassir Barrino / Hudson Catholic Despite an injury plagued sophomore season, Barrino is poised for a breakout junior campaign. The athletic 6-0 guard averaged 8.3 points per game during his shortened season but will be looked upon for scoring and solid defensive efforts this season.
Devine Eke / Union Catholic The 6-6 Viking is back to lead Union Catholic for his senior campaign after playing at St. Benedict’s. A ferocious finisher at the rim and great on the boards, Eke will play collegiately at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Isaiah Brisco / Roselle Catholic A highly sought after combo guard will spend his first year with Roselle Catholic after transferring from
Temple Gibbs / Seton Hall Prep Already a solid scorer and ball handler as a sophomore, Gibbs has the ability to light it up from deep and to take it to the rim.
Ashton Lofton / Union Catholic The senior floor general will be working with new talent this season. Lofton will look to continue his exciting play after a solid junior season with the Vikings. Chris Silva / Roselle Catholic This junior big man is a force in the paint for the defending Tournament of Champions. Already a tenacious defender, Silva’s offensive skills are developing and gaining him interest from top colleges around the country.

The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children Why Support Catholic Schools Research Shows: • The achievement gap is smaller in faith-based schools (Jeynes, 2007; Marks & Lee, 1989). •S tudents in Catholic and other private schools demonstrate higher academic achievement than students from similar backgrounds in public schools (Coleman & Hoffer, 1987; Coleman, Hoffer, & Kilgore, 1982; Greeley, 1982; Sander, 1996). atino and African American students who attend Catholic schools are more likely to graduate from •L high school and more likely to graduate from college than their public school peers (Benson, Yeager, Guerra, & Manno, 1986; Evans & Schwab, 1995; Neal, 1997; Sander & Krautman, 1995). • The “multiply disadvantaged” benefit most from Catholic schools (Evans & Schwab, 1995; Greeley, 1982; Neal, 1997). •S ocial class effects on educational achievement are significantly lessened in Catholic schools (Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993; Greeley, 1982). • The poorer and more at-risk a student is, the greater the relative achievement gains in Catholic schools (York, 1996). •G raduates of Catholic high schools are more likely to vote than public school graduates (Dee, 2005). •G raduates of Catholic schools are likely to earn higher wages than public school graduates (Hoxby, 1994; Neal, 1997). atholic schools tend to produce graduates who are more civically engaged, more tolerant for diverse •C views, and more committed to service as adults (Campbell, 2001; Greeley & Rossi, 1966; Greene, 1998; Wolf, Greene, Kleitz, & Thalhammer, 2001). • A study by economists with the St. Louis branch of the Federal Reserve Bank has found that Catholic schools improve the career income prospects of their students more than public or private schools. Graduates of private schools earn considerably more than graduates of public schools, the study found. However, since private school graduates tend to come from affluent families, their higher income does not necessarily mean a step up the economic ladder. For graduates of Catholic schools, on the other hand, the increase in expected career earnings was a “statistically significant 13.6%.” The study suggested that there are “aspects of school quality that could affect earnings later in life.”

Scholarship Programs
SFIC provides children in need with the opportunity for a quality, values-based education in a safe environment. The Fund provides partial tuition scholarships to economically disadvantaged children attending private and parochial schools within Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union Counties. Scholarship awards are based upon need without regard to race, religion or ethnicity.
SFIC General Scholarship Program: For students attending elementary and secondary schools. Funded with unrestricted donations from individuals, corporations and foundations.
Scholarship Eligibility To qualify for tuition assistance a student must: • Come from an economically disadvantaged family that meets income eligibility requirements similar to the national school free and redudced lunch program. • Attend a parochial or private school within Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union Counties.
Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF): For students attending elementary schools in Newark, Jersey City and Elizabeth. Jointly funded by SFIC foundation grants and the CSF. Donor Designated Scholarships: For students attending elementary and secondary schools. Funded by restricted donations from individual donors, corporations and foundations for the benefit of designated schools, localities or scholarship recipients.
Sources of Funding SFIC is funded by contributions from individual donors, corporations and foundations. SFIC sponsors two annual fund raising events – a dinner and a high school basketball tournament.

Catholic schools emphasize basics in the curriculum while fostering a school ‘culture’ that strengthens the students’ mastery of academic subjects, makes them feel valued because they are known personally by the teachers and builds their self-esteem as they achieve their goals.
How You Can Help Us Your donation will help SFIC increase the number of promising students who will benefit from an educational setting where they can experience academic achievement and improve their chances for successful futures. Every year SFIC denies over 50% of families seeking our assistance because we lack the financial resources. SFIC general scholarships are $1,000 per student and all scholarship awards are made in the form of direct payment to the schools the students attend. Average tuition for parochial schools in the areas we serve are $4,748 for elementary school and $10,285 for high school. SFIC Student Profile Jamal Litus • Grade 6 • Our Lady Help of Christians, East Orange, NJ
I live in Newark with my mother and father, as well as my brother Malik who is in first grade and my four year old sister, Allyha. Recently, my Aunt suddenly passed and my 3 year old cousin, Christina, is now living with us. I love being at Our Lady Help of Christians because I know I am getting a great education! I want to go to Culinary School and open a restaurant with my father. Every Saturday I make breakfast for my brother, sister and cousin. My favorite subjects in school are math, spelling and science. I recently was awarded first place for my essay on St. Alexander in the Archdiocesan Black Saint Essay Contest. I just entered the Maryknoll Essay Contest where we had to write “What Can I Do to Serve the Poor?” At Our Lady Help of Christians, our teachers remind us that “giving” is an important part of our faith and our good will to our neighbors near and far. Our school recently donated food to the parish food pantry in addition to $3,000 we collected. We are now raising funds for the disaster in the Philippines. “Jamal comes from a very fine family, with two young parents who struggle to keep their family here at OLHC, but they still try to aid other when possible” said Sr. Pat Hogan, O.P.
