By Valerie Werkmeister Sweat and hard work pays off for both the community and North Elementary School (NES). Thanks to the dedication of Zumba instructor and personal trainer, Amanda Smith, and her faithful students, the school’s physical education department will receive $1,045 to go towards new equipment. Smith is a fitness expert and personal trainer at Bob’s Gym in Evansville who is concerned about the health and wellness of our youth. She said she has read that today’s generation of children is not expected to outlive their parents. That sobering fact led her to want to do more to promote physical fitness and health. She wanted to inform the community of what they can do to better themselves. She decided to offer her services as a Zumba instructor to NES Principal Shannon MacMunn who happily agreed. Zumba is an aerobic fitness program set to peppy beats of music, usually Latin American inspired music. “I thought it was a fantastic idea. She contacted me and said she wanted to do something for the school and donate all the proceeds to the PE. I think it’s just great,” MacMunn said. In September, Smith began holding weekly classes open to the community in the new gym at the school. The $5 charge for the weekly classes was collected and the sum was kept a secret until it was revealed during last Tuesday’s class. Smith kept coloring a paper thermometer showing the progress made towards the $1,000 goal, but no one knew if they made it until the final amount was revealed. NES PE teacher, Julie Butler, was happy to hear of the amount of the dona-

By Pam Robinson The New Harmony Town Board has selected a new town marshal, Max Aaron Straub, a Mount Vernon native. Councilman Gary Watson announced the selection last Tuesday, December 20, at the coun- M. ‘Aaron’ Straub cil’s regular monthly meeting. Watson said members of the board hired Straub during the previous meeting, a special meeting held December 13. Start date for the new town marshal is January 1, 2017. During open forum at the December 20 meeting, former Town President David Campbell questioned Straub’s appointment. Campbell asked about the background and experience of the new town marshal and the number of applicants interviewed. In addition, he asked about providing Straub training through marshal school for only three weeks. He concluded by suggesting council “look further and deeper and get somebody to meet some of the needs of the town.” Town President Alvin Blaylock responded first to Campbell’s concerns. Blaylock stated six applicants were interviewed. Of those six, five had no law enforcement experience. He explained one applicant had served as a special deputy in northern Indiana several years ago, but had no actual police experience. Regarding the marshal training, Blaylock stated Straub would complete computer training on duty in addition to marshal classroom training near Indianapolis, providing a 12-week training process. He added the marshal training would allow Straub to transfer only as a marshal in another town like New Harmony whereas the police academy training, typically provided, sets up an employee to transfer to a sheriff’s department or a city police department. “This group was elected last year to represent the Town of New Harmony,” Blaylock commented. “We feel that the selection we made is the best at this time. That is the decision

Mount Vernon school plans move forward By Lois Mittino Gray The MSD of Mount Vernon School Board met on December 19 for the final meeting of the year and awarded several major contracts looking ahead to a busy 2017. The meeting began with warm recognition for board members Heather Allyn and Clarence Nelson for their years of service and dedication to the children of Mount Vernon as this was their final meeting on the board. David Frye, Director of Buildings and Grounds, presented recommendations to the board after opening bids in early December for three major expenses. The board accepted the best bid from MacAllister, including air conditioning, for $103,985 to purchase one 2018 Bluebird 30 passenger special purpose bus. Kerlin Bus Sales won the bid for a 2018 Thomas Saf-T-Liner HDX 84 passenger transit school bus at a cost of $112,813. Bus prices are the delivered price, minus trade-in, and should be ready by the upcoming school year.

Danco won the bid for renovating the office at the high school, for $205,000, plus Alternate 1 Athletic Office in the amount of $61,500, for a total of $266,500. The base bid entails work in the general office, while alternate one includes the work in the bookstore and adjoining classroom to convert them into the Athletic Director’s office suite. The board also accepted the bid from ECI in the amount of $157,500 for Phase III of the Soccer Complex renovation. It includes the soccer field entrance building with press box and gate and will be done next summer. The board accepted the proposal for financial services from United Fidelity Bank as per the recommendation from Umbaugh Cash Advisory Services, LLC discussed at the last meeting.

ternational Logistics Solutions, located at 2101 South SR 69 in Mount Vernon met with police officials and reported that David Elliott Short, of Ruston Avenue, Evansville, could be guilty of embezzling large amounts of money over time. The parent company of ILS is Warehouse Services, Inc., located in Mount Vernon. The losses to Mount Vernon’s GAF facility are believed to be in excess of $180,000 while the losses to ILS and its parent company, WSI, Inc., are believed to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $236,000. The president of the company and an employee of his company, told police they believed Short to have been falsifying bills of lading as well as time sheet invoices for the past several years. The result was a loss

David Elliott Short not only to ILS but also a significant loss to GAF Industries in Mount Vernon. The investigation was conducted primarily by Posey County Sheriff’s Detective Jeremy Fortune with cooperation from the ILS staff. “A case of this nature is so com-

plex and literally thousands of pieces of paper have to be scanned in order to build the case,” said Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth. “Jeremy Fortune did an excellent job working the case.” The documentation covers more than 6,000 pieces of documented evidence of the fraud and theft carried out primarily in smaller amounts by Short. The records produced by ILS indicate they owe GAF Industries $180,000 in false claims paid to ILS to cover the cost of Short’s overbilling of services provided to the company. The records also indicate that ILS has lost $56,000 due to overpayment to Short since 2014 for filing false time sheets and bills of lading. Short’s employment with ILS has been terminated due to the findings

of theft and fraud. According to the probably cause affidavit, Short did not show up for a scheduled meeting with company officials regarding the overpayment discrepancies. According to another company employee, Short contacted the company’s president a couple days later and admitted he had stolen the money and falsified the documents for financial gain. Short reported to the Posey County Jail last week and after processing, posted $10,500 cash bond through the Posey County Clerk’s office. Short faces charges of theft, forgery, and counterfeiting. The investigation is continuing and a court date has been set for January 25, 2017 in the Posey Circuit Court. Watch the Posey County News for further developments in this case.

Poseyville gas prices down, firemen numbers up By Valerie Werkmeister As the cold winter weather sets in, Poseyville utility customers will be glad to know of a recent decrease in natural gas prices. During last Wednesday’s Poseyville Town Council meeting, it was announced that the recent gas tracker price will decrease by 6.7 percent over the next three months of utility bills. Fire chief Sam Martin requested approval on $5,000 of equipment purchases and a $300 expenditure on books for an upcoming Firefighter I and II class that will begin January 8. He stated he has four individuals interested in taking the class that will last through August. Classes will be held in New Harmony. The council approved his requests. Martin also informed the council that 2016 will have a higher number of emergency call runs than in previous years. He stated as of Saturday,

December 10, the department had already made 250 runs which was the same amount for the entire previous year. Council members also approved a request by the American Legion to post a sign outside the community center to show the location of the legion office. The council requested attorney Jacob Weis to prepare an ordinance that will restrict traffic movement out of the horseshoe at North Elementary School to a right turn only. Town Marshal Charles Carter advised this would be the simplest approach to re-routing heavy morning traffic to not cause bottlenecks in that area of Fletchall Street. Cars exiting the horseshoe in front of the school will only be allowed to

By Valerie Werkmeister Posey County Commissioners learned one of the county’s roads was chosen as the best in the state during their final meeting of the year held last Tuesday, December 20. Highway superintendent Steve Schenk introduced TJ Marchand of JH Rudolph who explained the award to the commissioners. Marchand stated they selected Maple Hill Road as the best example of their work. The award was given by the Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana. JH Rudolph’s choice competed with several other contractors throughout the state. They reviewed their work throughout all the counties they serve in the southern Indiana region. They felt the scenic area Maple Hill Road runs through and the quality of their work helped solidify their choice. Marchand and his colleague John Hagedorn presented a plaque to Schenk during the meeting. Schenk expressed his confidence in choosing to work with JH Rudolph for the county’s asphalt needs. “They not only give the best price, but they’re also doing it right,” he added. Schenk also provided a brief status update on a few projects in the county. He stated Caborn Road bridge was recently opened for traffic. The Springfield Road bridge is currently in the permit process and engineer work is slated to begin soon on Vienna Road.

RETRO

Looking back, moving forward, and still learning life’s lessons Well, Christmas 2016 has come and gone, Madeleine, and we are poised to plunge into 2017. Like most others, I wonder what the new year will bring, and pray that all of us will be around to find out. I am going to try and think happy thoughts, and hope D M for the best. When I stood on Times B Square a couple of months ago, C and gazed up at the famous P

New Year’s Ball, I was actually glad that I would not be in the New Year’s Eve crowd. I never feel like I really celebrate this night, but this would not be the answer. It will only be a couple of weeks until your Grandfather gets his knee replacement surgery done, so I have a lot of things to get done before then. The beginning of January is kind of bleak and a let-down after the holidays, but it is the month I can slow down a little bit. New Year’s Day is the time we pause and think back about what happened in the previous year, of course. I know that there are many bittersweet memories for some friends, but our family has blessings in so many ways. So many others have had to deal with loss of a loved one in 2016, and my wish for them would be the ability to replace the sadness and just hang on to the happy memories. Madeleine, we have watched you, Alexander, and Issabella grow up in so many ways. I cherish every minute of your childhoods that I am able to share.

I won’t even mention all of the resolutions that I try to make for the coming year, because they are the same every year, and if I say them again, folks will throw rotten fruit at me. Who knows, maybe I will lose weight and de-clutter my house in 2017. We probably all can think of things we did or said in 2016 that we wish we could take back. Hopefully, we can consider these little lapses as lessons in life. When you and Alexander get into one of your little meaningless arguments, I always tell you that some day, he will be your best friend. Having someone to call in good times, as well as when you have some type of problem, is a wonderful thing. I wish that I had a brother to be there for me. You won’t understand this until much later in your life. Your teenage years are coming up all too soon, and I can already tell you that you will test your wings and think that your parents do not have a clue about anything. Again, it will be later in life before you fully realize how nice it was to have them always there for you. To all of my readers, and friends, I want to express how much you mean to me. I post a lot of family photos on Facebook, and I appreciate everyone’s sharing of the milestones in our lives. I do not understand the folks who use this social phenomenon to publish less desirable things. I want to see photos of your good times, hear about what you are doing, and share your sorrows. Tolling begins Dec. 30 on I65, East End Bridges between IN and Louisville Drivers traveling in Louisville and Southern Indiana need to prepare for the start of tolling on three Ohio River bridges. Tolling on the Louisville – Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project is scheduled to begin Friday, December 30. Tolled bridges include the two I-65 bridges connecting Downtown Louisville and Southern Indiana, the new Abraham Lincoln Bridge and the improved John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge. The new East End bridge connecting the Gene Snyder Freeway in Prospect, Ky., with State Road 265 in Utica, Ind., opens late December 18 and will also be tolled. RiverLink is the name of the new, all-electronic tolling system that makes the project possible. There’s no stopping, no slowing, no lines and no coin machines. Toll rates range from $2-$12,

depending on the size of vehicle and whether the driver has a RiverLink account and transponder. Drivers with transponders will pay the lowest toll rates. Drivers can set up a prepaid RiverLink account to get a transponder. All E-ZPass transponders, including the I-PASS from Illinois and the Indiana Toll Road E-ZPass, will work with the RiverLink system. No further action is necessary. Drivers without transponders will get bills in the mail, and pay higher toll rates. Drivers who do not pay their tolls will be charged a penalty and may face restrictions on vehicle registration until tolls and penalties are paid. Opening a RiverLink Account Drivers can open a personal account online at www. RiverLink.com, by phone at 855-RIV-LINK or in person

at one of two RiverLink customer service centers. A personal account can include up to four vehicles, with a minimum balance of $20 to open the account. The account balance rolls over month to month. The fastest way to open a RiverLink personal account is online. The website is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week with no wait. Transponders will be mailed to account holders, free of charge. For businesses with more than four vehicles, the fastest and easiest way to open an account is by calling a specialized customer service representative at 855-RIVLINK. Choice of Transponders A RiverLink local transponder is free, one per registered vehicle. The small sticker adheres to the inside of windshield, is non-trans-

would want your children to know. Record your thoughts, important dates, or whatever else might be lost if you aren’t around to tell them. Even after all these years, I still want to ask questions that my mother and grandparents would know. Besides the actual knowledge, I am still happy to find things, like recipes, in my mother’s handwriting. My eldest son, Todd, loves cowboy cookies, and when my mother copied off the recipe, she entitled it ‘Todd’s cookies.’ Every time I get that old stained recipe card out, I feel that she is right there with me. The same can be said of many others, I am sure. I lost the handwritten recipe for bourbon balls, originally made by Grandpa Don’s mom, Lucile. I found a similar version online, but I wished I was reading her words when I made them. I hope that generations to come put value in little things like this. So, Happy New Year’s to everyone, and I hope that 2017 will be a peaceful and kind year for you.

Effort to make Say’s Firefly IN state insect gaining momentum By Lois Mittino Gray An effort to make the Say’s Firefly Indiana’s state insect is gaining momentum as it snowballs down from the north into Posey County. Even our State Senator Jim Tomes has lent his support to the project honoring a bug named after New Harmony’s famed frontier naturalist. Thomas Say, known as the ‘Father of American Entomology,’ came to this area on the Boatload of Knowledge in 1826, collected many specimens, and died in 1834. His tombstone is located at the corner of Main and Granary Streets. An attempt to declare the Say’s Firefly, also called a lightning bug, as our state insect was first pushed about seventeen years ago by Tom Turpin and other noted Purdue University entomologists. It never materialized, but was resurrected about three years ago by an enthusiastic educator and her class of curious minds at Cumberland Elementary School in West Lafayette. The second grade students have researched the insect, learned how to write a resolution and have even appeared before legislative panels to tout their sixlegged champion. Maggie Samudio, a forty

year veteran teacher, recalled how the project began. “Every year, we make

tives to get support for this and we asked for an autographed picture of each

a book about the states and the children fill out the fact sheets and do presentations on their assigned state. A third grader named Kayla asked why we are one of three states who did not have a designated state insect. How can we get one, she wondered? We went from there and my classes have been working on it ever since,” Samudio said. Even though Kayla is older now, she still remains active in the campaign to get political support and recently rode with Samudio to Benton County to speak before their councilmen, who were impressed and passed a resolution supporting the designation. “The first year we wrote to our political representa-

one. You should’ve seen the hall exhibit with all the pictures we received back. What a lesson in civics for the students to see the faces of those who are their politicians,” she enthused. Tom Turpin came to the school and did a talk about the insect that is technically really a beetle, not a fly, and that totally fired them up to the challenge. “Who doesn’t like a firefly? Everybody does. And since you live in Purdue Country, it’s black and gold with a little red on it, how perfect.” Turpin said to rev up the crowd. From there, the students made an impressive list of 24 reasons why the Say’s Firefly should be the state insect. Number ten is a tribute to Thomas Say and his work

Seeds of the Sower by Michael Guido If God is good, why do the godly have grief? If God is fair, why do the faithful fail? If God cares, why does He allow Christians to have cancer? If God is powerful, why are innocent people murdered? And why are the ungodly prosperous? Why are the ungodly happy? Why are the ungodly recipients of any good thing? After all, they are ungodly! The writer of Psalm 73 had a problem with bad people living godless lives and receiving earthly rewards. He was a bit angry when he saw their lavish lives. They appeared to

have everything their hearts desired, lived lives of ease and were healthy. Their riches multiplied even though they scoffed God and threatened His children. What’s up? So the writer of the Psalm became vain. He avoided evil and when he sinned he immediately confessed and asked God to forgive him. He read God’s Word, engaged in prayer and tried to live a godly life. But all he got from God was trouble: all day, every day! Finally he asked God, “Am I wasting my time? Why should I bother to be godly?” Fortunately, he went to the

right place for an answer. “Finally,” he concluded when he went to the sanctuary to worship, “I understood their end!” Wrongs in this life will be corrected in the next! Remember: Dives lived in pleasure and Lazarus in pain. But there came a day when things were reversed: Dives was tormented by flames and Lazarus went to live lavishly in his Father’s Home. The ungodly leave their treasures at death but the godly only begin to enjoy theirs with their Father. Visit us at: SowerMinistries.org

in early New Harmony. The other reasons range from their role in the ecosystem, their natural history, glow worm young, musical and literary references to them, light pollution problems and insecticide hazards. The students are also the catalyst behind a space experiment to be conducted in the winter of 2017. They contacted Professor Steven H. Collicott, Purdue School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and asked the question “If fireflies were on the International Space Station or in zero gravity, could their still chemicals combine with oxygen to glow?” This simple question led to collaboration between the second grade classroom and the professor’s Purdue class studying experiments in zero gravity. The test should come during a sub-orbital zero gravity spaceflight experiment with Blue Origin Company. Twenty four second and third grade students were invited to the statehouse by their State Representatives Sally Siegrist and Randy Truitt to speak before the House Natural Resource Committee. As they bravely marched up to the microphone, Samudio said the legislators had delightful smiles on their faces and complimented them on their preparation and passion.as they went over their twenty four reasons. They told legislators that more than half of the insects currently

a resolution of support passed. They would like everyone in Posey County to write letters to Senator Jim Tomes, Representative Wendy McNamara, Senate Pro Tem David Long and Speaker of the House Brain Bosma encouraging them to vote for the bill when it is proposed next year in the House and Senate. Organizations are asked to write letters of support, too. The New Harmony Garden Club is working on generating commitment for the tiny summer delight in gardens. Samudio and devotees will be spending some of Christmas break writing more letters to schools to climb aboard the firefly train. Over the summer, they wrote over 500 letters to schools in all 92 counties. The exuberant teacher smiles as she remembers what one legislator said when they spoke before the house committee. “Gentlemen, we better pass this firefly resolution before they pick the mosquito.”

serving as state insects are not native to North America. “You will be happy to know that the Say’s Firefly, Pyractomena angulata, is native to Indiana and North America.” The students have appeared before the Purdue University Student Senate and other county councils to speak for their cause. “This is a great lesson in speaking to adults,” Samudio noted. “Your senator Jim Tomes called me at school this fall to talk about the project and lend some ideas and support. He asked me if I thought next year was the ‘Year of the Firefly’ and I said yes.” Samudio exclaimed. What does this energetic teacher and her dynamic students want from us down here? ‘Straub’ continued from Page A1 we went with, and that is the decision we are going with.” Councilman Watson added, “We had a police officer that worked here for 20 years that went to town marshal’s academy. You can sit down out there and try to cut down everything that we are doing, but we are doing what we were elected to do.” More significant news came from Councilwoman Virginia Alsop. She reported New Harmony has received a Community Crossings Matching Grant for $43,665. “We will be ready to go in the spring, just as soon as the weather breaks,” Alsop commented. Later in the meeting, council approved Ordinance 2016-13 for the Community Crossings Matching Grant Fund general account set up only for road preventative maintenance in the Town of New Harmony as designated in the grant. The matching grant funds will come from other town funds than the budget. Moreover, New Harmony residents were urged to help with completing a survey regarding public awareness of pipeline safety. Street Commissioner Bobby Grider explained a brochure regarding this issue was mailed to residents this fall, and another brochure and survey will arrive for everyone within the next few days. He emphasized the distribution of the information is mandated by the federal government, and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is urging residents to complete the survey. Grider commented residents may complete the survey included in the mailing and return in the postage-paid envelope, or they may fill out the survey online at www.pipelinesafetyinfo.com. He emphasized the survey consists of only five or six questions. He said the results of the survey, including statistics, will be available in February 2017. In other business: • Ordinance 2016-14 was approved regarding elected officials’ salaries. Clerk-Treasurer Karla Atkins was approved to receive a salary of $3,414.18 per month, including a raise of $1,200 for the year, in 2017. Council member salaries will remain the same as in 2016: $3,600 per year. • Street Commissioner Grider said leaves must now be bagged for collection. Thursday, December 22, was the last day for street pick up. • Councilwoman Alsop stated trash will be picked up on the same schedule as always since the holiday falls on the weekend. • Council appointed Rose Mack to serve on the Parks Board beginning January 1, 2017. She will replace Laura Arneberg whose term expires December 31. • Council President Blaylock reappointed Annette Buckland and Donald Alsop to serve a new four-year term on the Plan Commission, effective January 1, 2017. • Resolution 2016-2 was approved declaring December 11, 2016, as Indiana Statehood Day in New Harmony to honor this year’s Indiana state bicentennial. • Resolution 2016-3 was approved for a transfer of $2,975.85 in funds within the general fund to cover police clothing, police department supplies and telephone, vehicle repair and maintenance. • Resolution 2016-4 was approved for parks fund appropriation transfers of $526.74 to pay utilities. • Council approved the proposal of Jason Hoehn for the Harmony Warehouse lease: $894.03 back rent from 2012 will be paid, and $1,663.51 going forward each year on the ground. Councilman David Flanders took exception to affirming the vote. Council President Blaylock said the lease is on the up and up, and the paperwork had been filed. • Three long outstanding accounts were approved for write-offs totaling $129.89. • Council President Blaylock reported the fire hydrant replacement project was complete with four new hydrants installed and one rebuilt. Blaylock said the town wants to replace additional fire hydrants in 2017. In addition, he said a couple of minor water leaks had been repaired, and the heating at the New Harmony School building is working again.

• Councilman Flanders reported Maple Hill Cemetery is in satisfactory shape with flags flown at half-staff there in honor of the late John Glenn. In addition, he said the Tree City application had been sent to the Arbor Day Foundation. He noted New Harmony spends $20 per capita for tree planting, trimming and removal whereas the nationwide goal is $2 per capita. He added a scarce and difficult-to-acquire disease resistant elm had recently been planted at the west side of the water works plant. Finally, he thanked the Robert E. Blaffer Foundation for a $1,500 grant to provide ongoing preventive maintenance at Playtopia, and he thanked the county sheriff and volunteers for contributing over 96 hours toward staining and mulching at Playtopia. • Eagle ScoutTommy Short appeared before council to describe his Eagle Scout project at Maple Hill Cemetery. Short will replace handrails and rebuild a broken bench. Council President Blaylock offered the council’s support and commented, “I think this would be a wonderful project for the Eagle Scout to do.” • New Harmony resident Gary Gerard thanked council for allowing town employees to provide their muscle at the food pantry for about 15-20 minutes recently. The New Harmony Town Council meets in regular public session the third Tuesday of each month at 8 a.m. in the New Harmony Town Hall. The next meeting will be held January 17, 2017.

‘Poseyville’ continued from Page A1 turn right, or west, onto Fletchall Street. Street signs have been ordered and will be placed after the ordinance has passed. The council will also discuss an option with the MSD of North Posey to paint a right turn only arrow on the pavement. The last day for leaf pick-up in town was Friday, December 16. Anyone who failed to rake their leaves to the curb will be responsible for their own leaf removal.

The council approved three ordinances that establishes monthly distributions to each of the town’s utility funds – gas, water and wastewater. Beginning in January, $500 will be distributed to each fund each month and set aside for possible future improvements. The last meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, December 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the town hall. The board typically meets to clear up any end of the year budget transfers.

‘Zumba’ continued from Page A1 tion but felt the community support was just as important. “I’ve met a lot of people in the community who don’t have kids at the school. They are being great role models for the kids,” Butler said. Butler has not yet decided what she will do with the additional funds that will be used just at NES. She stated she will explore ideas following the holidays. Several ladies in the community have done well in their fitness goals and have lost a remarkable amount of weight throughout the weekly classes. The classes will be on hiatus through the winter months, but Smith says she plans to start classes again in the spring. Smith also has a personal business, Simply Prepped Meals, that can be found on Facebook and her website at simplypreppedmeals.com or by contacting her at 812-480-3947.

35th annual Hagemann Award for Musical Performance announced Philip Hagemann, a composer-conductor who is a native of Mount Vernon, Indiana, and is now a resident of New York City, announces the 35th Annual Hagemann Award for Musical Performance, a competition for Posey County, Indiana, high school students. The winner of the Award will receive $600 in cash, plus an Alexander Scholarship, a local award given annually to a group of high school seniors for post-high school education. It is worth approximately $2,000 for the first year of such education, occasionally with additional grants. (if the First Prize winner in the music competition has already received an Alexander Scholarship, a scholarship will be given to one of the other finalists.) The winner does not have to use the scholarship to study in the field of music. If the winner is a junior, he or she may compete again the following year but can only receive one Alexander Scholarship.

Eligibility. Any current senior or junior attending a high school in Posey County who is a performer in any of the following areas: voice, piano, organ, guitar, or any band or orchestra instrument Application forms can be obtained from the music departments of Mount Vernon Senior High School or North Posey Senior High School. The application form must be filled out and returned with a Postmark No Later Than Friday, February 26, 2016. Each applicant must enclose a tape recording or CD of himself/herself performing about five minutes of music. It is understood that the recording may not be of ‘professional quality.’ So long as it gives a true representation of the applicant’s abilities, it will be acceptable If possible, a copy of the music should accompany the recording (preference will be given to those who do include the music) The recording and music will be returned only if the applicant en-

closes a return envelope with return address and return postage. For the return, do not use UPS or FedEx, use regular mall (U S Postal Service). There cannot be a guarantee of the safe return of the material although all attempts will be made to do so. The materials must be mailed to: Philip Hagemann 35 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10023. Semi-Finals. The recordings will be audited by Mr. Hagemann and musical colleagues of his in New York Approximately ten SemiFinalists will be chosen, they will be notified within a week or so. The Semi-Finals will be held in March or April at a time and place to be announced, which will be the only date a Semi-Finalist may compete. Regrettably, if a Semi-Finalist cannot compete at the designated time because of illness or any other reason, he/ she will be eliminated. If possible, the location and appointment time will be included in the notification of the selection as a Semi-Finalist. For the Semi-Finals each student must play two short pieces of about five minutes each. These may be complete pieces, or movements or divisions of longer works. They may be the same pieces used on the application recording. However, for the Semi-Finals one piece must have been written in the last 50 years; the other piece must be from any earlier period. If a student has entered the competition the previous year, he/she must use different music. If a student needs a piano accompanist, he/she must make arrangements to bring one to the competition. (It will be permissible for a jury member to accompany a student although it would be preferable if the accompanist were not a jury member.) The student should bring two copies of each piece for the jury to use. The jury will consist of five to ten Posey County (or nearby) musicians and music teachers invited by Mr. Hagemann. At the end of the Semi-Finals the jury will discuss the performances and select four finalists. Notification to the Finalists will be made as soon as possible and the results will be given to local newspapers and other media outlets. Please note: regarding the requirement that one of the pieces be from the last 50 years, it is preferable that the music be of a ‘classical’ nature rather than a ‘pop’ number. It is recognized, however, that certain songs by, for example, Bernstein or Sondheim, are challenging and would be acceptable. Just use good judgement.

The Finalists will receive a prize of $300 each. Note: At all stages of the contest, the judging will be done on the basis of the following considerations • about 40 percent - technical mastery, accuracy to the printed music in pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, etc, diction and proper pronunciation of foreign languages (for singers), • about 40 percent - interpretation; tone quality; appropriateness of Style for the period of the compositions; phrasing; ‘musical instinct,’ etc. • about 20 percent - stage presence, appearance and appropriateness of dress, communication to the audience, projection, ‘charisma,’ etc Also, at all stages, memorization of the music will not be required, although it is preferable, especially for singers. Finals. The four Finalists will perform in a public concert sometime in the summer of 2017. Probably at the end of July or the beginning of August. The Finalists will be notified as early as possible. As with the Semi-Finals, the students must be available to perform at the announced time and place or they will be eliminated (in which case the sponsor reserves the right to replace a Finalist with one of the earlier Semi-Finalists). For the Finals each student must play a program of about 15-20 minutes of music, including at least one piece written in the last 50 years and at least one from an earlier period. At the conclusion of the concert the judges will meet to select the First Prize winner. No ranking will be announced for the other three Finalists. (Note: the prize money may be channeled through Historic New Harmony and USI; their process of issuing checks may necessitate the checks being mailed somewhat later.) Attempts will be made to publicize this contest at all stages. It is hoped that the contest will recognize and reward the worthy musical accomplishments of the most talented Posey County high school music students and will encourage future students to continue their musical studies in a serious way. If any questions or problems arise, they can be brought to the attention of the two high school music departments, but the latter can only be expected to relay the messages to Mr. Hagemann, who will make all final decisions. In future years it is possible that the structure and guidelines of the competition will be revised, based on past experiences.

OPINION

A Public Service - exposing bad ideas for what they are Sometimes someone inadvertently performs a public service by bringing an unbelievably stupid and dangerous idea to the surface, where it can be exposed for what it is. The New York Times can be credited - if that is the word J - with performing this pub- T lic service in a recent edito- F ... rial against proposals to allow B T law-abiding citizens to carry S

concealed guns. They refer to what they call the National Rie Association’s ‘fantasy that citizens can stand up to gunmen by shooting it out.’ Nobody has suggested any such thing. Data collected over many years - but almost never seeing the light of day in the New York Times or the rest of the mainstream media - show many thousands of examples of people defending themselves with a gun each year, without having to pull the trigger. If someone comes at you with a knife and you pull out a gun, chances are they will stop. The only time I ever pointed a gun at a human being, it was when someone was sneaking up toward me from behind a shed in the middle of the night. I never ďŹ red a shot. I just pointed the gun at him and told him to stop. He stopped. Actually having to shoot someone is the exception, not the rule. Yet the New York Times conjures up a vision of something like the gunďŹ ght at the OK Corral. Concealed guns protect not only those who carry them but also those who do not. If concealed guns become widespread, then a mugger or a car jacker has no way of knowing who has one and who does not. It makes being a mugger or a car jacker a less safe occupation.

Gun control laws are in eect occupational safety laws — OSHA for burglars, muggers, car jackers and others. The fatal fallacy of gun control laws in general is the assumption that such laws actually control guns. Criminals who disobey other laws are not likely to be stopped by gun control laws. What such laws actually do is increase the number of disarmed and defenseless victims. Mass shootings are often used as examples of a need for gun control. But what puts a stop to mass shootings? Usually the arrival on the scene of somebody else with a gun. Mass shooters are often portrayed as ‘irrational’ people engaged in ‘senseless’ acts. But mass shooters are usually rational enough to attack schools, churches and other places where there is far less likelihood of someone being on the scene who is armed. Seldom do we hear about these ‘irrational’ shooters engaging in ‘senseless’ attacks on meetings of the National Rie Association or a local gun show or a National Guard armory. The fallacy of believing that the way to reduce shootings is to disarm peaceful people extends from domestic gun control laws to international disarmament agreements. If disarmament agreements reduced the dangers of war, there would never have been a World War II. The decades leading up to that war were ďŹ lled with international disarmament agreements. As with domestic gun control laws, the agreements were followed by peaceful coun-

Guest Column: State Rep. Wendy McNamara

Undaunted by history, the same kind of thinking that had cheered international disarmament treaties in the 1920s and 1930s once again cheered Soviet-American disarmament agreements during the Cold War. Conversely, there was hysteria when President Ronald Reagan began building up American military forces in the 1980s. Cries were heard that he was leading us toward nuclear war. In reality, he led us toward an end of the Cold War, without a shot being ďŹ red at the Soviet Union. But who reads history these days, or checks facts before leading the charge to keep lawabiding people disarmed?

Guest Editorial: Representative Curt Nisly Indiana has obligation to protect right of pre-born to live

Spend a day at the Statehouse Applications are now open for students interested in participating in the Indiana House Page Program, according to State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville). While at the Statehouse, House pages spend the day touring the House and Senate chambers, the Indiana Supreme Court and governor’s oďŹƒce. They also observe the legislative session directly from the oor of the House, listening to debates on important policy issues. “Being a part of the education system, I have seen ďŹ rsthand how vital it is students

tries and ignored by belligerent countries that built up huge war machines, such as in Nazi Germany and imperial Japan. The net result was that the belligerent countries had every incentive to start wars, and that they inicted devastating losses on the peaceful countries that had drastically curtailed their own military forces. Eventually the Western democracies got their act together and turned things around, after they belatedly beefed up their military forces. But thousands of lives were lost needlessly before that happened. World War II was in its third year before Western forces won a single battle.

Pages are also assigned ageappropriate tasks like delivering important messages and sorting ďŹ les. To be a page, applicants should be between the ages of 13 and 18, which is typically grades six-12. McNamara said student pages receive an excused absence from school. McNamara also said the 2017 session begins on Janu-

Those students who wish to page together should note that on their individual applications. House pages are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Large groups like Boys and Girls Scout Clubs may be scheduled to page on Wednesdays. State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) represents House District 76, which includes portions of Posey and Vanderburgh counties.

Alone in a crowd When I was 16, I worked at a Phillips 66 gas station. I made $1 per hour; if I worked 12 hours I made 12 dollars. The station had one pump for regular (leaded) and one for ethyl. Mr. Cummins and GAVEL Mr. Miller of Columbus, In- GAMUT diana had not yet perfected the marketing of the die- BY JUDGE sel engine. Gasoline prices JIM REDWINE ranged from 25¢ to 30¢ per gallon. My boss, the owner, and I were the only workers. We would check and air up the tires, check the oil, put distilled water in the battery, have the customer re-start the vehicle so we could check the transmission fluid, wash the windshield and headlights, whisk broom out the floorboards, fill the gas tank and, if asked, would put the vehicles up on our lone hydraulic lift and apply new grease through the fittings. We did not accept tips but we did talk with every customer. Whenever an out-of-town car or pickup or tanker came through we would tell them where they could get a bowl of chili or a chicken fried steak. We also gave directions to delivery locations or residences. Yesterday my car told me my tires were low and that I should take it in for service before I drove another 2,800 miles. The computer did not offer to tell me where I could buy a bowl of chili but, if I had asked it, it would have. For some reason these memories and events brought E-filing to mind. If you happened to read last week’s column you may recall our local legal system will soon be virtually paperless and, pretty much, human contact-less. I am not sure of the exact time frame our world began its inexorable march toward exchanging ones and zeros for ‘Hellos’ and ‘May I help yous?’ It was probably either when self-service gas stations or drive through fast food places appeared or maybe when television allowed us to watch ball games alone in our living rooms. Or it might have been when Wikipedia replaced conversation. Of course, Wikipedia is my best friend when I am writing these columns. As a youngster I sought solitude in long hikes out onto the prairie. Now I am almost completely alone in every group I encounter. If I crave an exchange of human speech

I must first send the people next to me a text then try to remain focused until they deign to say something. Other than cashing the checks for Christmas, I am not sure our grandchildren make the connection of us to them. The thank yous come by text. On the other hand, my Grandfather would have thought he had found heaven early if we had had computers then. He thought grandchildren were an unnecessary disturbance, better neither seen nor heard. Some people just wind up in the wrong century. Be that as it may, we are discussing the irreversible conquest of human interaction by technology. The salient feature of contemporary society appears to be the general desire to isolate itself from itself. I ask you to examine your own world. In mine, I no longer need to leave my chambers to either attend or teach continuing judicial education. Banking is online. Taxes are paid electronically. One can get instructions on everything from curing a hangnail to impeaching the president via the Internet without talking to another person. Even toll bridges and highways are self-serve. We used to look to our colleges as places where people of different backgrounds would mingle and appreciate one another’s views and cultures. However, even the ‘best’ colleges now offer degrees on-line. When our son was in the Army stationed in the Middle East he started and completed his Masters of Business Administration and never saw a professor or a classroom. Surely, before long, everyone in America will be homeschooled in the sense no child will need to leave her or his house from kindergarten to doctoral programs. And, unless the Russians interfere, soon all voting will be done without the need for polling places. I guess we still may want to maintain contact to continue procreation. However, we artificially inseminate everything from pandas to pigs. Maybe we will eventually be able to just ‘mail it in’ after we get married via Skype. Well, I have to go. This column is carried by several digital newspapers and I need to email it in before the deadline or I’ll get a nasty note from some device somewhere. Abortion has become a sanitized term in our culture over the past 43 years. It is often called a ‘procedure’ or a ‘choice’ in polite society, but this careful language is meant to mask the slaughter of a preborn child each time an abortion is committed. Perhaps some Hoosiers have become numb to this killing. The numbers are stark. In 2013, Indiana reported 83,115 live births. That same year, Indiana reported 8,179 abortions, which means for every ten live Hoosier births, an eleventh Hoosier baby was butchered in the womb. Murder statistics oer another way to view the magnitude of abortion in Indiana. Again for 2013, Indiana reported 330 murders. This is almost one murder reported per day. These tragic deaths are generally headline news in the local community. However, for every murder that makes the news in Indiana, two dozen more pre-born Hoosiers are silently slaughtered. It is past time to end the assault on our Hoosier babies, and this winter I will author a bill in the Indiana House to provide Protection at Conception. The Indiana Code already declares that human life begins at conception (see IC 16-34-2-1.1), so my bill will strengthen what is already established law. I ďŹ nd it objectionable that Indiana acknowledges life begins at conception, but allows for this innocent life to be terminated. Both the Indiana and U.S. Constitutions prohibit the taking of a life without due process of law. There are lawyers who speak for condemned persons, but nobody speaks for the pre-born. Indiana must recognize and protect the natural rights of those not yet born. We now understand that from the moment of conception, pre-born children are genetically human, scientiďŹ cally alive, and have DNA that is dierent from their parents. Our scientiďŹ c knowledge has advanced so much since 1973 as to make Roe v. Wade’s musings about when life begins totally obsolete. Interestingly, the pro-abortion crowd no longer seriously disputes the scientiďŹ c fact that human life begins at conception. Instead, these abortion enablers argue cynically that some lives matter more than others. The Protection at Conception bill removes regulations on abortion in Indiana, and instead clariďŹ es that abor-

tion is the taking of innocent human life. In the event of an abortion, police would investigate, and prosecutors would have discretion to ďŹ le any number of charges up to and including murder against anyone who took part in the abortion. Protection at Conception also grants prosecutors more discretion when people commit homicides against a pregnant woman. With Protection at Conception, people could be charged with murder of a fetus regardless of the age of the fetus, instead of depending on whether or not a fetus is ‘viable,’ as it states in current Indiana law. Protection at Conception would make Indiana the twenty-fourth state to apply the fetal homicide statute at the point of conception. In this great nation of ours, we have overcome some mighty injustices over the years. At one time, the United States sanctioned slavery, discrimination based on race, and the denying of natural rights to some because on skin color, gender, and heritage. Even worse, the federal courts defended these policies with despicable majority

opinions such as Dred Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson. Fortunately, Americans demanded justice, and these outrageous rules were eventually sent to the ash heap of history. If mistreatment of others based on race or nationality is wrong, it cannot be reasonable to butcher pre-born babies based on their age, their level of development, or some other arbitrary measure of their value. Roe v. Wade, the federal opinion sanctioning the slaughter of the preborn, will meet the same fate as Dred Scott and Plessy. Ronald Reagan once said he noticed that “all of the supporters of abortion are already born. We must remember there are solutions to give a baby life instead of abortion. I encourage those who were adopted to speak out about how glad you are that your birth mothers chose life. Indiana has an obligation as a sovereign state to protect the natural right of the pre-born to live. This year we have the opportunity to make abortion a thing of the past. Curt Nisly, Goshen Indiana State Representative, House District 22

Guest Column: IRS 2017 IN tax rate changes announced Eective January 1, 2017, the Indiana individual income tax rate is reduced from 3.3 percent to 3.23 percent. Letters to the Editor Republican’s theft of elections What is happening to our audacious nation? Republican’s theft of elections is a cancer eating away at the soul of America. The Bush-Republicans stole the 2000 presidential election through fraud and nary a word out of the media and powers-that-be. George Bush lost that election by over 500,000 votes. Here it is in 2016 and Trump-Republicans are in the process of stealing another presidential election. Donald Trump is losing the presidential election by some 2.8 million votes and media has already anointed him president-elect. Has Trump changed his ways and rhetoric to being more presidential? No. Donald is still spewing out the same visceral hatred and racism to his white Republican supporters and they are eating it up. What a sad state of aairs. Ron Lowe

Vikings fight back to earn fifth at Team State meet

Viking wrestler Nate Willman inicts punishment on a recent opponent. The freshman is undefeated so far on the season and will get an opportunity to face grueling competition this week in the Mater Dei Invitational. Photo by Dave Pearce By Dave Pearce The North Posey Viking wrestling team earned their own Christmas gift this season. With a strong season last year, the Vikings punched their ticket to the Little State tournament held in Fort Wayne on Thursday and Friday of last week. However, illnesses, injuries and tough competition did not allow the team to enjoy the success coach Cody Moll had envisioned but despite the “disappointment,â€? the Vikings won three of their four matches at the tournament and fought their way back from a loss in the second round to finish in fifth place in the 12-team event. “We went into the tournament wanting to win it and I thought we could win it,â€? Moll said of the event. “We set some goals and we didn’t set a goal to go up there and finish in the top six or something. We went up there to win. But we had some unforeseen circumstances occur. In the last two weeks, we have had two guys blow an ankle out and we had a wrestler reinjure a shoulder in the first round at team state. Then. We were down four varsity wrestlers going into the Monrovia match. I told the kids that whoever we were wrestling was just like us‌they were chasing a dream and they would like to see us at less than 100 percent to make their dream easier. And that’s what happened. I have replayed the Monrovia

match over in my head 100 times and with the team we sent out, I don’t know how we could have beaten them. There was a very slim chance and we were just so down. It was just bad timing but it is what it is. But once we lost, the kids were really upset and we told them we could battle back and get fifth place and show that we are champions and the plan is to go back next year. And wrestle back they did. After winning the first round, the Vikings fell in the match against Monroiva. “Once you take that loss and you know you can’t win the tournament, a lot of guys drop their heads and don’t really care but we weren’t like that, Moll said. “We really took it to the Adams Central team. Adams Central lost by eight points to the team that got second and we ended up beating them by 19. Up and down the line-up, the Vikings wrestled well with a couple of outstanding wins. “We definitely belonged up there but we matched up bad against Monrovia, Moll said. “But we all battled back. When we wrestle in a match where our tough guys go up against another team’s tough guys, we have been winning. We have some hammers. Some of the other guys are letting us down a little right now. We gave up six pins against Monrovia and you can’t win a state champi-

onship and do that. But Moll was complimentary of most of his wrestlers. “Kamryn Kendall at 106 had the nest day he has ever had in wrestling, Moll said. “He had four matches and had three pins. He wrestled a Monrovia kid who, during the seeding meetings was the talk of the coaches as a transfer from Perry Meridian. He was big and undefeated and state-ranked but I didn’t tell Kendall going into that match. About 40 seconds into that match, the kid just kept attacking and attacking but couldn’t score. Kendall ended up breaking the kid and beat him 12-0. He had him on his back as the match expired. And Kamryn is up 9-0 on this kid he is not supposed to beat and we were yelling at him to put the kid on his back. He just kept battling for his team but even though he didn’t get the pin, he got a 12-0 win against a kid he wasn’t supposed to beat. Moll said that he, Coach Sam Goebel, and Kendall were the only ones in the building who thought he had a chance and he got it done. Freshman Nate Willman continued his undefeated season, going 4-0 with all four pins. “Even though he had his best weekend, his competition wasn’t the strongest and he still needs to battle like he does, Moll said. “That’s why I like him as a wrestler. He has a lot of work to do but is still undefeated as a freshman. At 120, freshman Tristan Martin battled well against mostly juniors and seniors and despite getting pushed around and beaten up. “Once he learns how to keep the older guys from beating up on him, he is going to be a heck of a wrestler, Moll said. “He’s still winning his share of matches but we’ve got to find a way to keep him from getting beat up on. Cameron Fisher also went undefeated with all pins in the tournament. “Cameron wrestles for the team and puts them on their back as soon as he can and puts them away, Moll said. “He doesn’t stop until he gets the pin and that’s what we need. At 132, Cameron Capps reinjured his shoulder and he did not wrestle the remainder of the day. “We put in Thomas Rapp who battled his butt off but Thomas is the 126 back-up that we bumped up to 132 and he was undersized but he has heart and he saved us some team points.

At 138, Levi Miller went 3-1 on the day, losing his last match of the day. “Not sure what was going on with Levi in that last match but he didn’t look like the Levi we see in the wrestling room, Moll said. “We hope to have the old Levi back in time for the Holiday Classic. Josh Wiggins went 3-1 on the weekend, despite being sick. “He just has heart and pride and never quits fighting for his team or himself, Moll said. “He had a lot of close decisions and one big pin. Albert Spencer had a big pin for the Vikings at 152 against Monrovia while Colton Gamblin went 3-1 at 160. Austin Frymire got probably the biggest pin of his career in the tournament. “Against Adams Central in the final round, it was kind of a swing match, Moll explained. “It was one of those matches where we didn’t really know for sure and he went out and got a big pin for us. At 182, Zach Atkins wrestled well. He earned a pin in the Adams Central match that helped the Vikings earn their fifth-place finish. “We bumped Zach up to 195 and he wrestled a kid that was a lot bigger then he was but he outwrestled him, Moll said. “He didn’t try to get into a muscle match against him. The Vikings were unable to field a 195-pounder in the other matches of the weekend so they gave up a forfeit there in the other rounds. At 220, Cole Werkmeister opened his portion of the tournament with a big pin against his Winchester opponent. Then in the heavyweight division, Chris Cross was outmatched in a couple of his matches but managed to stay off his back, something he has been improving on. “He saved us some big points early and then he got us a big win against Adams Central, Moll said. The Vikings will hit the mats on Monday boasting a 16-3 record and will prepare for the Holiday Invitational to be held at Mater Dei on Wednesday and Thursday. Moll said he is looking forward to some of his wrestlers getting into some stiff competition at the tournament. “That’s one of my favorite tournaments because our lightweights are going to get some

Short-handed Lady ‘Cats lack offensive punch at Toyota Classic By Brandon Cole The Toyota Classic did not turn out the way Mount Vernon High School would have hoped. The Lady Wildcats could only muster 40 points in two games without their missing star player. Hallie Fisher got banged up in a contest last week, causing her to be unable to play in the Washington game. She was unable to compete in the Toyota Classic and it showed up on the

scoreboard. It has been a tough week for the Lady Wildcats. The junior guard averages 16.2 points, 3.2 assists, 6.6 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game. Without the reliability of their go-to player, Mount Vernon has had issues getting points on the board and creating offense. Wood Memorial jumped ahead early on the Lady Wildcats on their route to a 70-25 win in the opening round of the Toyota Classic. Led by a strong senior class, No. 3 ranked Wood Memorial, used aggressive defense and a steady offense to handle the young Lady Cats. The Lady Trojans held Mount Vernon to a mere two points in the opening quarter. Leading 17-2, going into the second quarter, Wood Memorial put their foot on the gas. They put up 25 in the second quarter and cruised into halftime with a 42-9 lead. The Lady Wildcats had their best offensive quarter in the third, where they put in 12 points. It wasn’t nearly enough, as Wood Memorial would finish the quarter with a commanding 64-22 lead. Neither team had much offensive production in the fourth quarter, as a total of 10 points was scored. Mount Vernon was led by Summer Sanders - 11 points, Madison Rodgers - six points, and four points a piece from Demi Collins and Alison Simpson. Sanders shot an impressive 5-10 from the field. Rodgers attempted the Lady Wildcats only two, threepoint shots of the contest. Neither were successful, but she did contribute four rebounds, four assists and one steal to go along with her six points. The Lady Wildcats lost their second game of the Toyota Classic, 47-15 to Mount Carmel. Simpson had a solid all-around game with five rebounds, four steals and one assist. Danielle Minton pulled down seven rebounds. The Lady Aces jumped out to a 14-6 lead by the end of the first period. Mount Carmel continued with a steady dose of defense, allowing just three Lady Wildcat points-per quarter in the remaining periods of action. Alison Simpson led Mount Vernon with six points and pulled down nine rebounds. She was 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Mount Vernon was 4-for-24 from the field, as a team, which amounts to 17 percent shooting. Sanders and J’Lea Schneider each finished with three

points. The Mount Vernon Lady Wildcats will travel to Mount Carmel on January 5, after Christmas break. The Lady Wildcats will have some time to go over film, improve on their technique, get healthy and plan for their next contest, as they look for their second win of the year.

Vikings make little noise in first Toyota Classic By Dave Pearce The North Posey Vikings can play with any team on their schedule. They have shown that from day one of this season. But the Vikings have one primary problem. They have a vanishing problem. Like so many games this season, the Vikings have been so close but when it came time to drop the final nail in the coffin, the Vikings seem to look for someone else to do it. The same problem that has haunted them throughout the season haunted them in them in this week’s Toyota Classic, leaving Coach heath Howington shaking his head, wondering what he can do to fix the problem. The Vikings got perhaps the worst possible draw in the tournament. They opened against the state’s No. 4-ranked Wood Memorial Trojans and because the tournament was played near Oakland City and around Gibson County, the Vikings got to face the Trojans on their home floor. Despite a good game and several chances to come out on top, in the end, it would be Wood Memorial who would come away with the 64-55 win. Both teams showed a balanced attack in the opening period as four Vikings would score 13 points and for Wood, four players would score 16 points and it appeared the teams were in for a good game. But in the second period, 6-foot-4 sophomore Paxton Bartley caught on fire and had 10 points of his own and 6-4 senior Tyler Fleisher kept the defense guessing with a pair of 3-point baskets as Wood outscored North Posey 21-13 in the period to take a 37-26 lead into the half. North Posey’s offense was limited and came from only three sources in the second quarter as freshman Josiah Ricketts and junior Jordan Goedde each had five points for the Vikings and junior Jacob Sanford had a 3-point basket. But in the third period, the Vikings turned up the defensive pressure and while Paxton got his seven, only one other person scored as the Vikings got themselves right back into the game with an 18-point quarter of their own. Ricketts had nine in the quarter while Sanford had five and David Bender and Ethan Morlock each added a bucket. The Vikings had narrowed the gap to two points entering the final period. But the fourth quarter meant closing time and the Trojans just had more answers than the Vikings. While the Trojans used four players to come up with 18 fourth-quarter points, members of the Viking squad were noticeably absent in the quarter as Ricketts attempted to carry the Vikings, scoring nine points but only

two from the supporting cast as Wood Memorial took with win. Ricketts, who was named to the all tournament team, finished with 25 points while no other Viking was in double figures. Goedde finished with nine while Sanford had eight and Morlock had six. Bender finished with five for the Vikings and Drake Rogers finished with one field goal. “We played very well at times and made a very good opportunity for ourselves when we got back to within two points at the end of the third period,” Howington said. “We even took a lead but just couldn’t find a way to come away with the win. We battled back and had a 53-51 lead and they closed the game on a 13-2 run.” But if the Vikings thought Wood Memorial was tough in the tournament opener, they got to see perhaps the best team in Southern Illinois on Tuesday evening as they squared off against the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces. The Aces were a perfect 11-0 coming into the contest and disappointed none of a full house of fans in the game against the Vikings. Mt. Carmel had an excellent supporting cast to combine with their 6-8 junior-senior combination of Justin Carpenter and Jackson Marcotte. But despite the size differential, the Vikings played a solid first half against Mount Carmel. Doing what they know how to do well, the Vikings put 22 points on the board to 32 for the Golden Aces. It would be a pair of sophomore guards who would make sure the Viking game plan did not work as the sophomore combo of Bret Doan and Austin Rager combined for six 3-point baskets in the first half. The Vikings held the two big men to 11 total points in the half. Ricketts led a somewhat balanced attack for the Vikings as he had eight points while Noah Scheller had five. Sanford and Bender had a 3-pointer apiece in the opening period while Rogers added a field goal. But the 6-5 senior Carpenter came alive in the second half as the Vikings were forced to go out and guard the Mt. Carmel guards and Carpenter had eight points in the period. Mt. Carmel outscored north Posey 18-9 in the third quarter to leave little question as who would prevail. Only two North Posey players scored in the period as Ricketts had six and Sanford three. “We played a tough basketball team tonight,” Howington said following the game. “They are

Lady Vikings fall to North, prepare to defend Illinois title By Dave Pearce The North Posey Lady Vikings are struggling with turnover issues. The turnover issues have led to confidence issues and the combination of the two left the Vikings with a 4-6 record heading into the Christmas holiday. In the team’s only game last week, the North High Huskies, who have dropped only two games this season while winning 11, came out in a full court press and before the Lady Vikings could gain their composure and get the ball up the court, North had run out to a 17-3 lead with under two minutes remaining in the first period. North scored the first four points before Kaitlyn Blankenberger drove the baseline and cut the deficit in half. But the was the last of the north Posey highlights for about six minutes of action. Time after time the bigger and quicker Huskies put

the defensive clamps on the North Posey guards and one turnover snow-balled into ten in the first period alone. Ally Brandenstein hit one of two free throws at the 2:50 mark but the Huskies showed why they are 11-2. Brandenstein finally stopped the bleeding with just over a minute to go in the quarter when she hit a 8-foot jumper but North quickly answered. Kim Weaver closed out the first quarter with a 3-pointer that pulled the Vikings back to within 22-8 and give them a little hope heading into the second period. But unfortunately, the second period was a whole lot like the first as North’s defensive pressure came in waves and even when the Lady Vikings were able to defeat the press, they were unable to put the ball in the basket. That made for a deadly combination for the

last game before Christmas. The Vikings were able to match the Huskies’ offensive output in the second period as both teams put 17 on the board but the Vikings were down 14 going in. Annemarie Cardin was fouled to open the second period and her two free throws helped but the Huskies answered with a trey. Bankenberger answered with a three of her own before the Huskies, not to be outdone, hit yet another three before Viking skipper Larry Kahle took a time out. North moved out to a 3013 lead before Blankenberger popped again from long range. After the Huskies answered inside, the Vikings went on their best run of the contest as Blankenberger hit a free throw and Brandenstein hit four points in a row to pull the Lady Vikes back to within 32-21. Blankenberger hit another pair of free throws before North moved ahead 37-25. Christine Scheller nailed a bucket on the 3-point line before the Huskies hit the final bucket of the first half to take a 39-25 lead into the half. A solid third quarter by the Huskies combined with more turnover trouble and poor shooting woes put the

Cardin hit two more free throws and Haley Wilson hit a basket before Claire Muensterman closed out the Viking scoring with free throw to end the game with a 70-45 defeat. The Lady Vikings will try to use the strength of their schedule as a weapon as they participate in the Merry Mule Tournament in Fairfield, Ill., this week. Ally Brandenstein finished with 17 for the Lady Vikings and Blankenberger seemed to find her game and finished with 11 points. Weaver and K. MV wrestlers dominate North, prepare for Holiday Classic By Brandon Cole Mount Vernon won 13 of 14 weight classes as they cruised to a 72-6 final over Evansville North at home in dominating fashion, this week. “We were pretty dominant, and I don’t mean that in a cocky way,” said head wrestling coach, Tim Alcorn. “I am really proud of the boys and the way they executed. We had a great week of practice leading up to the meet. Several things we worked on in practice, showed up at the dual meet. We were able to stay on top, behind and in control and do some of the little things that we have been working on. We were able to hit on some of the little fundamentals that can be lost in a season. We really went back and hammered on them and I think that is what made us successful. We had several pins, starting at the bottom.” Winners for MV were: Cade Latshaw (fall), Brent Ricketts (FF), Austin Bethel (fall), Micah Keller (dec), Luke McGennis (fall), Cam Maier (fall), Alex Wilkerson (fall), Wade Ripple (FF), Dylan Murray (FF), Nate Morgan (dec), Tommy Kelley (FF), Jacob Crissup (FF) and Harley Gorman (fall). “Micah Keller probably had the best match,” said Alcorn. “We gave up the first take-down and then scored the final three points of the match. We moved our weights up for the night.” Some wrestlers gave up some weight, but they all showed up ready for the challenge. The team benefitted and the evidence showed up on the scoreboard. The Wildcats have a couple of wrestlers

who are getting respect in the state rankings. Bethel is ranked fifth at 152 pounds and Ripple is ranked fourth at heavyweight. “Those are two guys, when they speak, the whole room listens,” said Alcorn. “They are some of the hardest workers. It is tough getting those guys reps, because of how good they are. There are times in the room that no one can touch them and no one can hang with them. What we have to do to level the playing field is really work on their cardio. We have to wear them down and get them tired and then throw guys at them. That is how they get their tests. It is tough when you are tired. That is a cliché that we use in the wrestling room. Be tough when you are tired and those guys work on that everyday in the room. Even though there is no one in the room that can push them around for six minutes, we all do our part to hold them down or frustrate them a little bit, especially when they are tired and they have to sort that through their head. It is quite the honor to be ranked in state, but we all know rankings don’t mean anything. Those guys have their heart set on taking home a state medal.” This week the Wildcats will be tested. Those Wildcats that are planning to make a post-season run, can use this weekend as a litmus test. The Mater Dei Holiday Classic is one of the toughest tournaments around. Top teams from Indiana, including Avon and Mater Dei will be there. The top team in Kentucky (Union County) will be there. Top 10 talent, such as St. Xavier and Louisville Trinity will be represented. A top team from

the state of Illinois will also be in the meet. “We like to use this meet to see where we stand in our state and semi-state,” said Alcorn. “If you are able to place in the Mater Dei tournament, we have high expectations for you. If you are able to place fifth or sixth, chances are you are a regional to semi-state level kid. If you are able to place top four in that tournament, we are looking at you qualifying for the state tournament and maybe even coming away with a medal. That is a good test for us. It is some of the best competition in the state. Franklin and New Pal have been state dual qualifying teams in the past. There is just nowhere to hide in this tournament. It is just a beast of a tournament. We love that. We look forward to it, so we get challenged, and maybe even take some

losses.” It is better to come into the post-season with some hard fought losses and be battle tested, than wrestle a weak schedule and show up with a great record. Wins and losses are used for seeding purposes, but everyone starts over come the post-season. Just because your 35-0, doesn’t mean you are going to make out of area competition. There are some tough schools in Southern Indiana. While the Holiday Classic took place this weekend, the results will not be listed in the newspaper until next week. This is due to an early deadline, because of the Christmas holiday. The Posey County News wishes you and your family a Merry Christmas and asks that you check out next week’s edition for the Mater Dei Holiday Classic results.

Vikings Toyota Classic, from B2 11-0 for a reason. There are no weak links on that team. Our plan coming in was to pack it in and make them beat us deep and they hit six threes in the first half. We tip out hats to them.” On Friday evening, the Vikings closed out the tournament with a game against

the Gibson Southern Titans. True to script, the Vikings fell behind 17-4 early and fought their way back to take as much as a nine-point lead in the second half only to let the game slip away. The Vikings will look for a way to put games away as they will now enter the final

three games before they begin playing primarily the conference portion of their schedule. The Vikings will host North on January 3 and then Mount Vernon on January 6 in a rematch of the season’s second game. Both games are at North Posey and both reserve games begin at 5:30 p.m.

Members of the North Posey fourth grade team are, front row, left to right, Braylon Games, Caleb Goebel, Dylan Helfert, Kade Buecher, and Seth Turpin, In the second row are Isaac Luigs, Brennan Butcher, Trey Schipp, Henry Martin, Stone Riecken, and Tate Wilson. The team is coached by Jake Riecken and Mike Games. Photo submitted
