Message from the Mayor Welcome to 2023 – after a year that again challenged us with COVID-19 and ongoing storms, it feels great to enter into a new year with sunshine on our shoulders. Despite these challenges, we’ve seen some amazing achievements and as a Council remain committed to our community, understanding their values and delivering projects and services to improve livability and wellbeing. It was wonderful to welcome back events with no restrictions across our LGA. We launched our first place plan at Karuah – a plan that puts the Karuah people first. Since its adoption in March, the Karuah community has embraced it, and we’ve been working together to roll out 11 amazing projects for the town. We’ve also progressed key strategic documents for the LGA with a key piece being the new Community Strategic Plan 2022 to 2032 – focussing on being a more inclusive, welcoming and resilient community. The environment remained a focus for us last year with a number of projects underway as part of our ongoing commitment to achieve a carbon neutral Council by 2025 – installing solar panels on 14 community buildings, trialling the first sustainable asphalt project in the LGA and endorsing a trial of the use of hydrogen fuel in 2 Council owned heavy vehicles to help reduce our carbon footprint. Overall, with your help, we’ve achieved a lot, and it’s something each and every resident of Port Stephens should be incredibly proud of. As we look forward to another prosperous year, we’re excited to hit the ground running with a bumper schedule of events, projects, and community workshops that touch every pocket of our beautiful Port Stephens and continue to improve the beautiful region we call home.

Ryan Palmer, Mayor of Port Stephens
