A word from our sponsors...

After a three year break, the Portsmouth Property Association Annual Charity Dinner is back!

I’m sure I speak for all of you attending this evening that this prestigious event, which provides such an important opportunity for socialising and networking, has been sorely missed. We are delighted to be amongst you, the elite of the Portsmouth area’s property market.

As a new business, when the opportunity to sponsor the dinner arose, my fellow Directors and I jumped at the chance to offer our support. I had the privilege to be Chairman of the Association at the last annual dinner celebrating its centenary, hosted at Portsmouth Guildhall just before the national Covid lockdown. Tonight, we return to the welcoming and more intimate environment of the Royal Maritime Hotel and we thank the management and staff for their support and hospitality.

The PPA annual dinner is such an important event for the association as it provides a great opportunity to raise money for the

Chairman’s charities. We encourage you to dig deep, buy your raffle tickets and bid in the auction to support these worthy causes.

Over the years, members and guests have been entertained by a host of celebrity and sporting icons including Michael Portillo, Steve Davis, Hazel Irvine, Dennis Taylor and our guest speaker at the centenary dinner Kevin Keegan. This evening will be no exception. Michael (Eddie) ‘the Eagle’ Edwards is an Olympic icon. I don’t know of any other sporting legend that has become as famous for coming last! We look forward to hearing more about his determination to represent his country and outstanding sporting achievements.

Our appreciation goes to the PPA committee members and fellow sponsors without whose organisational skills and support events like this wouldn’t happen. We’re delighted to see the return of the annual dinner and Ian, Daryn and I hope that you enjoy the evening. It has certainly been a long-awaited event. So, eat, drink and let the entertainment commence.

2023 Annual Charity Dinner

A word from our Chairman...

Welcome to our 2023 Annual Charity Dinner, did you miss us?

Our Centenary Dinner in March 2020 was a fateful evening as Covid was beginning to take hold, with table after table, guest after guest regrettably cancelling the day before, the afternoon before, hours before! As we do though, we got there, tables shuffled, we tried to remain unruffled, and a memorable evening was had by all.

Well since then much has happened and it does seem a much different world and environment, we work in, but the PPA has managed to stay active and hopefully relevant.

Attending, supporting, and arranging events has kept us busy and given us the chance to offer insights and professional critique over a wide range of topics for our members. The South Coast Property Show, The Annual Property Conference, and our Breakfast Seminar; there has been support for Shaping Portsmouth too.

We like a competitive edge and where we can combine a friendly social too that remains our sweet spot. Beating our SPA neighbours in Cricket was a highlight. A packed-out venue for our Annual Quiz and of course action-packed England opener in the World Cup, here at the Royal Maritime; a 6 – 2 win and lunch to boot.

We’ve even had a chairman come and go since our centenary dinner, with sadly no annual dinner for her to address, but Sam Marsh’s legacy and my tenure will be inextricably linked by the amazing charities she chose and which I am honoured to have been able to adopt. The charities each have their own unique stories and do so much locally, so please support them if you can.

A meet the charities event early in my tenure, allowed us the opportunity to give an immediate donation of £800 to each from funds and it was

a great way to introduce some of the individuals there and let their personalities shine to members; we will definitely do this again. We were also able to take advantage of The Big Give to double further £250 donations later in the year. With the support of Flude Property Consultants we’re able to have a Charities table tonight, and I hope those present enjoy the evening.

A few thank yous’ to close. To our sponsors and supporters: Destin4 for their event sponsorship and to the team here at the Royal Maritime Club. Clive Emson who’ll be bounding up to auction rostrum for us once more, your PPA Committee and Dinner Sub Committee that get these wonderful events off the ground. The Lord Mayor for his attendance tonight and of course an Olympic legend, in the guise of Taron Egerton but actually Eddie “the Eagle” Edwards.

Miss us? We were never gone, and I’d love you to help us grow, remain relevant, attract new members, new followers (700 now and counting on LinkedIn!) and encourage members to join the committee, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. Now please enjoy your evening.

2023 Annual Charity Dinner PPA Supported Charities

We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry.

That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

Motiv8, a local youth charity, provides dedicated safe spaces, positive relationships and opportunities for young people aged 919 years, to access the support they need, when they need it most. We are passionate about supporting young people to thrive. In the last 10 years we have enabled more than 20,000 children, young people and families through mentoring, group work and across the community in local youth clubs, on the street and through holiday activities.

Motiv8 began to support Ben when he was just 15. He lived with his mother who struggled with alcohol dependence. Ben had witnessed lots of violence and abuse in the home.

"Life was really stressful, weekly support boosted my confidence and helped me to be the person I am now. Mentoring gave me belief in myself, the feeling that I could be successful and reach my goals." (Ben 19) Ben, is now at College and has his first parttime job.

PCS provides early intervention emotional support for children and young people who would otherwise struggle to access a statutory service, or whose families may not be able to pay for a private one.

About PCS Not for Profit

Portsmouth Counselling Service Children and Young People (PCS

CYP) are proud to support the young people of Portsmouth by offering access to free counselling.

Many CYP fall through the gaps left by underfunding in the NHS and the high demands on school counsellors. This coincides with increased need as more CYP struggle with mental health.

We provide professional oversight and expertise in counselling and safeguarding and any funding we receive increases the number of CYP that can access the service.

2023 Annual Charity Dinner Guest Speaker

Michael “Eddie the Eagle” Edwards

Our guest speaker this evening is one of the bestknown names and faces in British sport from the late 1980’s and is surely the epitome of our love for the plucky underdog.

Born in Cheltenham, his family calls him by his given name, Michael. “Eddie” is a nickname derived by schoolfriends from his surname. It was while at school that he acquired a taste for skiing while on a school trip aged 13, which encouraged the young Edwards to develop his skills on dry slopes, before working for a season at Glenshee in Scotland.

Having not made the grade as a downhill skier, he switched to ski jumping as there were no other British ski jumpers with whom to compete for a place and began jumping under the supervision of John Viscome and Chuck Berghorn in Lake Placid, New York, using Berghorn’s equipment, although he had to wear six pairs of socks to make the boots fit.

A big disadvantage was his lack of financial support for training, being totally self-funded and another problem was that he was very far-sighted, wearing thick glasses under his goggles, which would mist up at altitude.

Edwards first represented Great Britain at the 1987 World Championships in Bavaria and was ranked 55th in the world. This performance qualified him as the sole British applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics ski jumping competition. He received confirmation of his qualification for the games while working as a plasterer and temporarily residing in a Finnish mental hospital, due to lack of funds for alternative accommodation rather than as a patient.

During the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary Edwards competed in and finished last in both

the 70 m and 90 m events. However, Edwards’ jump of 71 m at Calgary in the Winter Olympics was then a British record and his Olympic jump still puts him sixth on the all-time list of British ski jumpers.

His lack of Olympic success endeared him to people around the globe. He subsequently became a media celebrity and appeared on talk shows around the world, appearing on The Tonight Show during the Games.

At the closing ceremony, the president of the Organising Committee, Frank King, singled out Edwards for his contribution. King said, looking at the competitors, “You have broken world records and you have established personal bests. Some of you have even soared like an eagle.

Sponsorship and media work has followed since with appearances in TV shows including, The Jump, Splash and most recently the Masked Dancer.

In 2016 the Eddie the Eagle story made the big screen, with the film, Eddie

Lord Mayor’s Charities

All of the proceeds of this evening’s dinner and fundraising will be donated to our Chairman’s charities, detailed elsewhere in the programme. In addition, as is customary, the PPA Chairman Iain Morrison will present a donation from PPA funds to the Lord Mayor Councillor Canon Dr Hugh Mason for his charity appeal.

The Lord Mayor’s Appeal is supporting three charities,

Aurora New Dawn, which is a feminist led charity dedicated to ending violence against women and children, and hidden violence. Since 2011, Aurora New Dawn has offered safety, support, advocacy, and empowerment to survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and stalking. We offer a variety of services and are involved in supporting feminist campaigns to end male violence against women.

Portsmouth Hospitals Charity raises funds to make a positive difference for patients, their families and the staff who support their care. We fundraise to help improve facilities, purchase equipment and support research and innovation.

The Honor Waite Charity which is geared towards Relieving either generally or individually single women or widows resident in Portsmouth who are in condition of need, hardship or distress with a preference for such women resident in the area of the ancient parish of Wymering by making grants of money or facilities calculated to reduce the need hardship or distress of such women.

We are the charity partner of Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, and we work to support all wards and departments across Portsmouth Hospitals.

Any donation, no matter how large or small helps us to enhance patient care, and support staff wellbeing. Without support, we can’t continue to provide those extras which can make such a difference to our patients’ care and treatment.
