MISS SCHOOL MISS OUT

WHAT COULD THEY BECOME? Are you unsure if your child is well enough to attend school?

With exams coming up and end of school year activities to look forward to, it’s vital to ensure children attend school regularly to ensure they don’t miss out or fall behind in class.

Illness is a major reason for children being absent, however, not all illnesses need time off school.

NHS Wessex Healthier Together has produced a handy guide for parents to help them decide when it’s OK to send children in and when it’s recommended that they stay off. Some common illnesses are shown below and other illnesses can be found under the parents/carers tab on www.what0-18.nhs.uk

If absence is unavoidable, it is very important to inform the school as soon as possible on the first day of absence, letting them know the reason so that the absence is authorised. You can find out more information about regular school attendance at www.portsmouth.gov.uk/attendance Illness

What it’s like

Advice

Common cold

Runny nose, sneezing, sore throat

Children should be given paracetamol, plenty of fluids to drink and can be sent to school. Ensure good hand hygiene – dispose of tissues and regularly wash hand with soap and water

Flu

Fever, cough, sneezing, runny nose, headache, body aches and pain, exhaustion, sore throat

Children should go back to school when recovered - this is usually about five days. Ensure good hand hygiene.

Head lice

Itchy scalp (may be worse at night)

Children can go to school - treat child and all other family members by wet combing with a nit comb and conditioner

Sickness bug / diarrhoea

Stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea

Return to school 48 hours after the last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting. See GP if they appear to be getting dehydrated (passing little urine or becoming lethargic)

"If you're considering fostering, go for it! Don't let your doubts stop you - we've never looked back." Stuart, foster carer

FosterPortsmouth

Could you become a foster carer? This Foster Care Fortnight (13 – 26 May) we’re raising awareness in the hope that more people consider a career as a foster carer. It’s not a common career path, yet it’s one of the most rewarding roles around.

Foster carers get fantastic satisfaction from making a real difference to the life of a child or young person. Plus you will receive top quality training, continuous support and around £177-£522* a week per child in your care.

Find out more Come and find out more at our Emirates Spinnaker Tower event this month! The event is being held on Wednesday 22 May, 7 – 9pm. There’s no need to book, just drop-in on the evening to meet the Foster Portsmouth team and some of our current foster carers, who are on hand to chat about what it really means to foster a child.

Our foster carers do an amazing job, and you could too! The foster carers we work with are as individual as the children that need care. Our foster carers come from all walks of life and regardless of their ethnicity, age or sexuality, they all share the same motivation to make a positive difference to a child’s life. *dependent on skills and experience.

6 | Spring 2019 | Term Times

While a spare room is crucial, it doesn’t matter whether you rent or own your home. Some people foster as a career or combine fostering with other employment, whilst others choose to become a stay at home parent/carer. There are many options available and fostering could work for you. We would love to hear from anyone that has been thinking about fostering and would like to find out more. For more information on fostering in general, please visit foster.portsmouth.gov.uk or call 023 9283 4701 for a chat with one of the team.

Music Hub Soundsational, a ‘cabaret style’ concert, took to the stage with young people from schools, academies and colleges performing a variety of famous songs, stage hits and extracts from musicals. This was followed by the Infants Voices Festival. The annual event brought together more than 1500 children, aged 6 to 7, performing songs from Storyscape, a songbook composed by Portsmouth Music Hub. Goldilocks, Puss in Boots, the Big Bad Wolf and the Gingerbread Man were just some of the characters brought to life with the children’s vibrant costumes and singing.

Sue Beckett, CEO of Portsmouth Music Hub said: “Events like Soundsational and Infant Voices provide excellent opportunities for children and young people to showcase their musical talents. It is impossible to imagine a world without music and the arts and that’s why the team at Portsmouth Music Hub remain committed to providing every child with the opportunity to experience a wealth of culture. If we can fire up the imagination of young people then they may go on to conquer the world!”

Health advice

Get set for safe, healthy, When the temperature increases it’s tempting to reach for the ice creams and fizzy drinks but too much sugar is really bad for your health, especially for children. Change4Life have got advice on how you can cut back on sugar by making a few simple swaps to everyday food and drinks. Find out more and use their sugar calculator to see how much you’re having each day: www.nhs.uk/change4life/. If you’re a parent or carer to a baby you can get advice on weaning, including meal ideas from Start4Life: www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning.

Or why not visit one of the six adventure playgrounds? They have lots of different activities on offer and each one hosts a play festival during the summer holidays. They also have the Holiday Food and Fun programme, along with the four youth clubs in the city, which offers a healthy tasty lunch for kids and young people each day, and last year provided over 7,000 meals and snacks during the summer.

Summer in the city

• Check for hazards in the water. Rocks or other objects may be submerged and difficult to see

Looking for ideas to keep your kids entertained this summer? There are lots of free options in the city, which will keep them active and tire them out. There’s the seafront and Southsea common, skatepark, Hilsea BMX track, splash pools and various parks.

Summer is a great time to live by the sea but you need to be sensible in the water to keep yourself safe. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents advises against the dangerous act of tombstoning but if you are going to do it:

• Check the depth of the water. Remember tides can rise and fall very quickly • As a rule of thumb, a jump of ten metres requires a depth of at least five metres

Health advice

summer fun • Never jump whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs

• Check for access. It may be impossible to get out of the water

• Consider the risks to yourself and others. Conditions can change rapidly – younger people could be watching and may attempt to mimic the activity. And, if you jump when you feel unsafe or pressured, you probably won’t enjoy the experience.

Find out more: www.rospa.com If you want to help your children get confident in the water, free swimming is available to all children under 12 living in Portsmouth at three pools in the city. This is during term times, including weekends. Search ‘free swimming’ on portsmouth.gov.uk

And don’t forget that when the sun is out, suncream is essential. Search ‘heatwave’ on nhs.uk for more advice on keeping your family safe and well during hot weather.

Lifesaving support Six new public access defibrillators (PADs) have recently been added to the city. Using a defibrillator alongside CPR can dramatically increase the chance of being able to save someone’s life if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest happens when the heart stops pumping blood effectively around the body. This will cause someone to lose consciousness, and without intervention can be fatal within minutes. A defibrillator can help to restore the heart’s electrical rhythm and save a person’s life. Emergency services are called to about 30,000 cases of sudden cardiac arrest each year in England.

You don’t need to be nervous about using a defibrillator as it gives clear verbal instructions and it won’t deliver a shock if the person’s heart is beating or if the pads aren’t positioned correctly so you can’t harm anyone.

PADs are stored in locked cabinets. When you dial 999 to report that someone has collapsed, the operator will advise you where your nearest defibrillator is and give you the code to unlock it. This means they’re safe from tampering. The operator will stay on the phone to support you until help arrives. Download the South Central Ambulance Service Save a Life app to find out more about defibrillators and see where they’re located in Portsmouth.

Support for families affected by alcohol Drinking too much can creep up on us. If you, or someone you know, is drinking every day or struggling to cope without alcohol and has children under 18 years old then there’s a new free service in Portsmouth that can help. The Family Support Project is a 12 week programme where a specialist worker will support the whole family by helping to identify what changes they want to make as a family and supporting them to make these together. The Family Support Worker will also work directly with the children to help them express how they feel when their parent or carer drinks.

Contact the Family Support Project on: 0800 138 0355 / 07854 563004 / family.support@ssj.org.uk

Anyone struggling with alcohol who doesn’t have children can contact the Recovery Hub for free support: 023 9229 4573 / recovery.hub@ssj.org.uk There will also be a new Alcohol Treatment Centre launching in the city this summer which will offer treatment and recovery accommodation. The treatment will include alcohol specific group-work, one-to-one and family counselling, carer support groups and peer recovery activities, including sports therapy, in the evenings and weekends.

If you want to try and cut down your drinking yourself take a look at the One You Drink Free Days app on the App Store or Google Play. You can also search ‘Alcohol’ on portsmouth.gov.uk for tips on reducing your alcohol intake.

Get fit doing good GoodGym Portsmouth celebrates its first birthday in May and has completed over 800 good deeds in this time.

GoodGym is a group of runners who combine getting fit with working on community projects. They run somewhere and do things like painting, tidying or gardening before running back. They’ve helped schools, community centres, food banks, the Hilsea Lido and Salvation Army.

They also do smaller or individual runs to help older people with tasks that they can’t manage at home or just to have a cup of tea and chat with an older person who’s lonely.

The group meets every Wednesday, 6.15pm at Fratton Community Centre for the group runs. Everyone is welcome (must be over 18).

Relationship and sex education You might have heard that from September 2020 it’s going to be mandatory for secondary schools to teach Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and for all primary schools to teach Relationships Education with a recommendation that they also have a programme of sex education.

The reason behind this is to try and ensure that consistent information is provided to all children and that they don’t seek it out from unreliable sources. The content taught will be age appropriate.

Schools will be able to decide how to deliver RSE and should be encouraging parents to help shape their policies. Portsmouth City Council will be supporting schools by developing resources and services that they can purchase. School’s RSE activity will be Ofsted inspected. Expect to hear more updates about this in the coming months.

Cervical screening Women aged 25 – 64 should get a letter inviting them to attend a cervical screening (smear test). Women aged 25 – 49 get invited every 3 years and women 50 – 64 get invited every 5 years. This test detects abnormal cells in your cervix that may lead to cancer if not monitored or treated. Cervical screening saves an estimated 5,000 lives a year so it’s really important that you book an appointment when you receive your letter. For more information visit www.nhs.uk/cervicalscreening

Get muscle and joint help direct from physios – fast Following a successful six-month trial, a new service is available in GP surgeries across the city to speed up access to specialist physiotherapy support.

The First Contact Physio service puts people with a range of muscle and joint complaints directly in touch with a physiotherapist. When you call your GP with knee, elbow, hip, neck or back problems, you’ll be offered a same day call back. Following a telephone consultation with a physiotherapist, you’ll be given advice on how to speed up recovery, exercises to do to prevent it happening again or a referral into a specialist service. Muscle and joint related symptoms account for around 30% of all GP appointments in the UK and are the most common reason for repeat consultations. However, the majority of joint or muscle related pain does not need to be assessed by a GP: a physiotherapist is able to guide patients on the best management for their symptoms.

The new triage service is available in all GP surgeries across the city and will run Monday to Friday 8am to 12pm.

This new service is being delivered by Solent NHS Trust as part of Health and Care Portsmouth. To find out more about the service, speak to your GP practice or visit healthandcare.portsmouth.gov.uk/first-contact-physio

Breezy says ‘Help keep our air clean’ Breezy is the newest member of the Pompey Monsters and looks after our air, keeping it nice and clean so that we can all be healthy.

Cars, vans and other vehicles can produce nasty gases and blow tiny bits into the air which might make you ill. If you and your grown-ups follow Breezy’s top tips we can help her keep our air clean and safe to breathe.

• Why not stomp (walk, cycle or scoot) instead of taking the car, especially if you’re not going very far? It’s great exercise and you can chat on the way.

• On the way to school, find the route with the freshest air, away from busy roads with lots of cars • When your grown-ups pick you up or drop you off with the car, like going to school, a friend’s house or after school club, ask them to turn their engine off while they are waiting

• If you travel to school by car why not park and stomp? Parking a few minutes away from the school and walking will help keep the air cleaner and safer around your school • Find out what your school is doing for Clean Air Day on 20 June and get involved in activities 22 | Spring 2019 | Term Times

Portsmouth Charter and photographic competition

Could you become a school crossing patroller? Bill has been working as a school crossing patroller since he retired from his job in teaching. Over the past six years he thinks he has helped more than 250,000 people cross the road. He enjoys being part of the community and the regular hours in the morning and afternoon means he remains active and has a daily routine. We asked Bill a few questions about being a school crossing patroller:

What do you love most about your job? I find managing a busy school run without incident very rewarding. I try my best to be fair to both pedestrians and motorists who I appreciate are all pressed for time.

What’s your favourite part of the day? I enjoy the busiest periods of each patrol. This can be a real challenge at one of the busiest junctions in Southsea, which is used by six schools and by hundreds of motor vehicles traveling in four different directions. Anticipating safe crossing opportunities in such circumstances, and in all weathers, certainly keeps the mind alert!

A copy of Portsmouth’s first Royal Charter granted by Richard I on 2 May 1194 while he was based here waiting to sail to Normandy with his army is on loan from Bodleian library and on display in city museum until 19 July. The charter outlines the king’s wish for Portsmouth to develop as a royal town. It grants permission for a 15 day fair to be held in August (the Free Mart Fair) and a market on a Thursday every week ‘with the same free customs as citizens of Winchester and Oxford have’.

We’re holding a photographic competition as part of the 825th anniversary of the Portsmouth Charter. The prize is £300 for the winner and £100 each for two runners up. Enter your photo which captures Portsmouth in the summer by 28 June 2019 to Portsmouthhistorycentre@ portsmouthcc.co.uk Contact Portsmouth History Centre on 023 9268 8046 for terms and conditions. Entrants must be over 16.

Photos will be displayed at the Charter 825 Free Mart Fair on Saturday 17 August at the City Museum.

If you could give one piece of road safety advice, what would it be?

To motorists I would say always use your indicator in good time and never signal to pedestrians that it’s safe for them to cross. To children I would say never sprint ahead of your parents towards the kerb as it can be confusing and unnerving for motorists.

What will you do when you finally put away your lollipop?

I’m not sure at the moment – I’ll cross that road when I come to it! Want to find out more? If you or someone you know would like to become a school crossing patroller, search ‘school crossing patroller’ on portsmouth.gov.uk

How you can recycle even more The new wheelie bin waste collection scheme which was introduced at the end of last year has proven successful at reducing waste and increasing recycling rates.

Since the scheme was rolled out the amount of waste collected in the city each month has fallen by an average of 300 tonnes and an additional 15 tonnes of recycling is being collected. Here’s ways to reduce your waste and recycle more:

Food waste trial

8,000 households in selected areas of the city will be taking part in a six month food collection trial this summer.

Households in parts of Drayton, Somerstown, Old Portsmouth, Portsea, Southsea, Eastney and Baffins will be supplied with one small caddy to keep in the kitchen, which is emptied into a larger one outside for weekly collection.

Garden waste

We can’t collect this as part of your weekly collection but you can take woody garden waste less than 10cm in diameter to the household waste and recycling centre or try composting. Alternatively join the Green Waste Club at wwww.greenwasteclub.co.uk and you will get a brown bin or container which is collected fortnightly.

Don’t forget aerosols

Did you know – empty aerosol cans should go in your recycling bin or container NOT in your black bin/bag.

Bring banks There are more than 100 recycling points around the city where you can recycle items which can’t be collected from home such as glass, clothes, books, DVDs, cartons/tetra paks. Find your nearest bring banks at www.portsmouth.gov.uk/recycling

Electrical items

Electrical items that can fit into a carrier bag can be placed on top of the lid of your recycling bin on collection day.

Bulky items

We can’t pick up things like furniture and large electrical items as part of your weekly collection. Take them to the household waste and recycling centre or use a local buy and sell site online.

Alternatively you can book a bulky waste collection from £30. There are also 25 weekly slots available free of charge to residents in receipt of council tax support. To book a slot call 023 9284 1105.

Do it online

Sign up for Waste and Recycling updates at www.portsmouth.gov.uk/updates-sign-up

You can also request a recycling bin or report a missed collection online. See ‘rubbish and recycling’ at www.portsmouth.gov.uk The household waste and recycling centre at Port Solent is open seven days a week from 9am – 6pm. It’s less busy during the week and at the beginning or end of the day.
