Stockton Ports in the Community Upcoming Anchor Fund Charity Events By Margaret Sacchet

The Anchor Fund, the Ports community fund, is the first of its kind in the storied history of the organization. The fund was established in 2007 and has helped support countless community projects, with a focus on youth centers and youth sports. The charitable fund reflects and reaffirms the Ports commitment to strengthen the community by using baseball and entertainment as a backdrop. Monies raised by the Anchor Fund benefit children-based charitable endeavors in San Joaquin County, although the fund is not limited to this. Most area charitable organizations are considered as potential beneficiaries of the Anchor Fund.

Pitching with Jeff Urlaub By: Kinsey Eaton Jeff Urlaub was recently promoted to the Ports on June 30th from the Burlington Bees, the Low A-affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. As of July 17th, Urlaub has made 7 appearances with the Ports. However, Jeff has pitched over 43 innings combined with the Ports and the Bees in 2012. Urlaub was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 2010 from Grand Canyon University. Urlaub played at Arizona State in 2005 until 2008, where he received an accolade of All-American. After suffering an injury at ASU, Jeff moved to University NevadaLas Vegas where he earned his degree. With one year left of eligibility he moved to Grand Canyon University, in Phoenix Arizona where he played his last year of colligate ball. This 25-year-old left-handed relief pitcher has shown an extreme control on the mound in Stockton and in Burlington. As of July 17th Urlaub has only 2 walks and 35 strikeouts in just over 43 innings pitched. In the 9 innings so far with the Ports he has struck out 8 batters and has allowed only 1 walk. Urlaub told us, “I don’t throw all that hard, so really have to focus on my location.” The California League is much different than the Midwest League. When pitchers move up to Stockton they have to make adjustments to the more advanced hitters, and also adjust to the way the ball travels in California. He told us, “I prepared to be up here at some point and so far it has been great. I have had to make some adjustments to the hitter’s league, but you just have to have a better plan going against these hitters.” He seems to be adjusting great to the league that is widely known as a hitter’s league. In Jeff’s first appearance with the Ports he pitched a no-hit inning on June 30th against the San Jose Giants. On July 7th he pitched a 3 strikeout inning against the Bakersfield Blaze. Then on July 13th he pitched a perfect inning against the Bakersfield Blaze. We wanted to find out more about Jeff Urlaub and his controlled pitching so we

10

asked him to describe some of his own pitches.

Pitch One: Four-seam Fastball When it’s thrown: I throw this just about every time a fastball is called. Speed: About 88-90mph Origin: I started throwing this pitch when I was about 9 or 10 years old.

Pitch Two: Changeup When it’s thrown: I throw my changeup about as often as I throw my fastball. Speed: 76-78mph Origin: I started this pitch around the same time as I started throwing my fastball, about 10 years old. This is the pitch I am most comfortable throwing.

Pitch Three: Slider When it’s thrown: Most of the time I throw this to lefties when I am ahead in the count. Speed: 77mph Origin: I learned and started throwing this pitch at spring training this year.

Pitch Four: Curve Ball When it’s thrown: This is the pitch I throw early in the count to right handed hitters. Speed: 72mph Origin: I also started throwing this pitch this year at spring training.

Since being drafted Jeff has shown tremendous control allowing only 15 walks since 2010 and a career W.H.I.P of .93. Jeff has been a sensational player throughout his career; he patterns himself after Jamie Moyer a long time Major League player. Moyer has been in the league for 26 years and has played for many teams. Although he is much older than Jeff and a starter, Moyer does not throw exceptionally hard; forcing him to focus on his control. This is similar to Urlaub, who also strives to focus on his control.

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight

The Damer Family By Nicole Loscavio

In this edition of the Season Ticket Holder Spotlight, we’d like to recognize The Damer Family; John, Veronica, and their four sons (ages 10, 9, 7, and 4) who are all very big Stockton sports fans! They have had season tickets next-door with the Thunder for years, and this summer marks their first full season here at Banner Island Ballpark! The Damer family has had a lot of fun coming out to the ballpark so far this summer and they love watching minor league sports. John added, “We just love to see the enthusiasm of the players. They’re all giving 110%; they’re all trying to go to the next step up. It’s great entertainment!” Their seats are in section 119, row 1 – just down the first base line; putting them right in the action, and right in the middle of the path the players take when they walk to the dugout from the clubhouse. This gives the Damer boys an opportunity to get to know and interact with the players, and they’ve met every single player on the team! They bring all kinds of things for the Boys of Banner Island to sign, but the most unique would be the posters that the Damers make themselves! It all started with a poster for Jake Brown – who is John’s favorite player, and once the other guys got a look at it, they all wanted their own! The boys help John come up with the designs, and then he airbrushes them onto the posters. They have one poster that they’ve gotten the whole team to sign (pictured with this article) and then each player has signed their own individual poster. John even mentioned, “When they don’t have a poster; when the players get traded and they come here, one of the first things they do is come over and say, “what do I gotta do to get a sign?!” Of course the boys always say, ‘hit a homerun’, ‘steal a base’, or even just ‘win!’ They throw out all kinds of stuff!”

When they aren’t busy making posters for the players, you could find the Damer family at the ballpark a few hours early to watch the Ports take batting practice. It’s a fun opportunity for the boys to not only watch and learn a bit more about baseball, but also to get to see the players being themselves, having fun, and joking around with each other. During BP, they shag the homerun balls and throw them back on to the field, which confuses some of the other fans who come out early to watch BP, but the Damer boys just love to help the team out!

It’s hard for all the kids to pick out who their favorite players are, because they love the whole team, but they did say that they miss Miles Head and Beau Taylor, and they wish them both lots of luck in Midland! Their favorite night so far this season actually happened on the road. The whole family drove out to Modesto to watch the Ports take on the Nuts, and they were there the night of the 18-inning game! The game didn’t end until 12:50 AM, but as true Ports fans would, they stuck it out until the very end! We’re very lucky to have such dedicated fans here in Stockton, like the Damer family, and we look forward to seeing them out at Banner Island Ballpark for the rest of this summer and for many summers to come!

Josh Bowman’s Second Half Surge By Jeremy Neisser It’s early May, the smell of hot dogs and hamburgers begin to fill the ballpark air. Pitcher Josh Bowman arrives his usual time at the ballpark in preparation for that night’s game. He exudes the quiet confidence even though the season has not started off the way he or the Ports envisioned. “The first month right off the bat you can tell it’s not Burlington Iowa, here in California it’s a huge plus. A lot of the same guys from Burlington are on the team so that was sweet.” Bowman added “It felt like we had a good chemistry. We were all going out there and putting our best on the field and the first half was not what we expected from a wins and losses standpoint but we kept grinding”. That workman-like mentality has paid dividends for Bowman in the second half of the season along with a change in appearance. Fresh off back-toback outings in mid-June just before the All-Star break where he allowed just 1 earned run over 11 innings pitched while striking out 10, Bowman breaks out the razor and shaves his beard which had been a mainstay since he arrived. The clean cut Bowman explains why the beard had to go “It was a bet with a buddy and it was going south, it was really looking ratty, it was getting hotter and it had to go. Thank goodness it ended up turning into some good outings”. Heading in to the All-Star break Bowman’s earned run average is down to 4.35 with a 0-6 record through 13 starts. Not the statistics that he had hoped for but the confidence from the final two starts were a starting off point as the second half begins. And for Bowman his first start in the second half was stellar. He allowed just 2 hits over 7 innings to earn his first win of the season on June 25th. Bowman attributes the time spent working with Pitching Coach Craig Lefferts as the key to his

hot start in the second half. “The main thing is working with Lefty (Craig Lefferts) on keeping the ball down, in this league you have to learn how to throw all your pitches down and you can’t make mistakes up in the zone. If you make mistakes, you make them in the dirt. That’s been the real focus. I credit it to Lefty, he has been beating me over the head with it”. In addition to the messages received from Lefferts, Bowman added a new pitch to his arsenalthe cutter. “Gil Patterson (Oakland Athletics roving pitching instructor) taught me it & I just started throwing that in the second half and have been throwing it ever sense and getting outs with it.” Bowman adds “I gain more and more confidence throwing it, I just keep throwing it and let the weak contact come”. The culmination of the hard work paid off on July 6th as Bowman faced the hot-hitting Bakersfield Blaze. That night Bowman pitched 7 innings allowing just 1 earned run over 4 hits with career high 11 strikeouts. “That night I felt like I was back in high school, flipping in curve balls, getting in on their hands and my stuff was on that night. I felt like I had a good rhythm, I felt like if I can repeat that kind of rhythm it should be a fun second half”. Through July 24, Bowman’s second half statistics are impressive: 2 W, 2.31ERA, 39IP, 4BB, 36K’s. The second half surge for Bowman has been quite impressive and his main goal the rest of the season is to get better each outing. It’s hard to top the success that Josh has had here in the second half. And if he does, perhaps he can follow in the footsteps of other right-handed pitchers like Dan Straily or A.J. Griffin who wore the Ports uniform last season and project to be the framework of the impressive Athletics pitching staff of the future.
