Hitting Breast Cancer Out of the Park A Ports Family Follow-Up By Margaret Sacchet Back in 2010 I talked with Becki Scarsone, wife of then Ports manager Steve Scarsone, about her battle with stage II breast cancer. She was diagnosed in January 2010 at the age of 40 after finding a lump in her breast while in the shower. After talking extensively with her doctors and family, Becki chose to have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. “Remarkably, it was only a six hour surgery with my release the following day,” said Becki. “This was done in February, a month after my diagnosis.” Six weeks after her surgery, Becki sat with her oncologist to decide what her follow-up would entail. “Since I was only 40, the practice was to be overaggressive and follow up with four rounds of chemotherapy. Several lymph nodes were removed during my surgery and biopsied on site. My doctors were 99% confident that my surgery alone was my cure because of this.” She began her chemotherapy treatments on April 1, 2010. Her manager husband had to leave for Stockton April 4th (the Scarsone’s live in Arizona). Her treatments were three weeks apart and Becki said she handled them very well. She had a few small side effects but says God, friends, and family are what got her through. Becki is currently cancer free and doing really well. Becki now sees her oncologist every six months. She says that endometrial cancer (lining of the uterus) is more prevalent in breast cancer patients. She has a yearly biopsy of uterine tissues to detect any abnormalities. Becki is also taking a daily drug that inhibits the production of estrogen in her body. “My advice is live every day as if it were your last,” said Becki. “For me, it’s making sure those I love know I love them. My kids (a daughter, 18 and a son, 15) and husband are scared, of course. They were faced with the possibility of losing me and those wounds stay fresh. Any time I feel sick, any time they feel sick, we can’t help but think it’s some kind of cancer. That’s just where your mind goes. It haunts us. But we also enjoy our time together that much more.”

Leonardo Gil, former Ports player (currently in Double-A Midland), began dating his now fiancée Ashley Koch a few years ago after meeting at a baseball game in Wisconsin. Their relationship was off to a great start, with the exception of getting used to some language and cultural barriers (Gil is from Venezuela). About a year in to their relationship, both Ashley and Leonardo (Leo) were thrown a curve ball. Her mother, Cathy, was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. After talking with the couple back in 2011, they told me it was tough to deal with Cathy’s diagnosis for a number of reasons. Gil was away playing baseball, so Ashley was on her own most of the time. Ashley had said the hardest thing was putting up a strong front for her mom. She could tell her mother was really sick and the feeling of helplessness would come over her. For Leo, he said the hardest part of the experience was not being able to be with Ashley and her mother to help them. His advice for anyone going through a situation like this is to give them all of your support. After deciding on a lumpectomy, Ashley’s mother, and Leo’s soon-to-be mother inlaw, received chemotherapy and radiation. After completing her treatment, she was prescribed medication that was supposed to stop/slow down the growth of hormones by preventing cancer cells from getting the hormones they need to grow. Cathy said she has to take this medication for five years. The treatment took a toll on Ashley’s mother. “During treatment, I lost my hair, taste buds, was very tired and weak, got neuropathy (nerve damage) in my feet and hands, and a constant runny nose,” said Cathy. “Since the treatment, I still have neuropathy in my feet, I don’t have eye lashes or eye brows, still have a runny nose, and some forgetfulness.” Cathy has been cancer free for three years and says she is now doing well and feeling good. She still sees two doctors, an oncologist and chemo oncologist, for check-ups every six months. She must continue doing this for another two years. She was getting mammograms every six months, but can now go back to once a year. The biggest thing Cathy has learned from her experience is that life is very precious. “You never know when your time will be up, so while you are here, live life to it’s fullest. Spend time with those you love, have fun, and make memories.” Her advice for anyone going through a similar situation is to have hope. “Take one day at a time. Also know that others around you are pulling for you. Most everyone is willing to help you out in anyway.” As for Ashley and Leo, their relationship is going really well. “We are growing stronger each day,” said Ashley. When asked if her mother’s diagnosis changed her and Leo individually or as a couple, Ashley said that it did in fact change them. “As a couple, we have learned we need to be more open and communicate better. I think as individuals, we just can’t take anything or anyone for granted. We need to be strong through everything.”

Tony Thompson: Honoring His Biggest Supporter By Margaret Sacchet Cancer is tough to deal with at any age, whether you are 11, 23, or 70. Ports infielder Tony Thompson had to deal with it for the first time when he was just a junior in high school. Thompson was born in Carmel, California, but moved shortly after to Reno, Nevada where he grew up. He attended the University of Kansas until his junior year of college when he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the sixth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. When Tony was growing up, his mother decided to go back to school. Because of this, he and his two brothers, Tim (now 26) and Thomas (now 17), were looked after by their grandmother, Betty Brandt. “She was like a second mother us,” said Tony. “Thomas and I were around her a lot.” Tony has been playing baseball since the age of five and his grandmother was there at every game cheering the loudest. Things changed for the Thompson family when Baba (Betty’s nickname) was diagnosed with an advanced stage of lymphoma at the age of 70. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes (white blood cells), a type of cell that forms part of the immune system. Typically, lymphoma is present as a solid tumor of lymphoid cells. Tony said she was misdiagnosed a few times before, and by the time she was correctly diagnosed at 70, the cancer had spread to several different parts of her body. By this time, it was at a really advanced stage. The Thompson’s reaction to the diagnosis was shock. “It was weird to find out, tough to find out. It was a shock to the entire family,” said Tony. His mom took it pretty hard, but did her best to keep cool around the kids. Tony’s brother Thomas was very young when all of this was happening, but had a good grasp about what was going on. Tony said his brother still took the news really hard. Tony’s grandmother took the news as best she could. “She was a strong person,” said Tony. “She didn’t make the family believe she was upset. She went about her life like normal.” Baba went through both radiation and chemotherapy after the diagnosis. For a while it seemed to be helping, but since her cancer was so advanced, not much could be done. “I saw her getting weak,” said Tony. “The treatment wasn’t working and I knew it was just a matter of time. We made her as comfortable as possible.” Tony’s grandmother passed away in 2006 at the age of 78. Tony has nothing but fond memories of his grandmother Baba. “She was a very outgoing woman. She wasn’t afraid to tell you what she thought. She always put others’ needs before her own.” Tony said her loving nature was the best thing about her.

10

Being close to family is what helped Tony through this rough time in his life. The Thompson’s are a very close-knit family, so they were a good support system for each other. A week after his grandmother passed, Tony decided to write “ILMO BABA” on the inside of his baseball cap. It stands for “In Loving Memory of Baba”. During his Galena High School double-header game that evening, Tony hit five home runs. To this day “ILMO BABA” is written on the inside of all his game caps.

Tony’s advice to anyone going through a similar situation (like the Thompson’s) is to have a good support system and people to talk to. “For more advanced cases like Baba’s, the best thing to do is make the person comfortable and to be around for them. It made it easier for her to have family around and present.”

Tony has also decided to take another step in honoring his grandmother. Thompson (now 23) made the decision in September 2011 to donate his hair to Locks of Love. “I saw Locks of Love on T.V. and thought it was something that I could to do give back; do in my grandmother’s memory.” Tony needs at least 11 inches of hair in order to donate. He started in October 2011 with a fresh buzz cut and plans to grow out his hair at least until spring training in March 2013. “I hope they don’t make me cut it at spring training,” he said. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Josh Bowman’s Second Half Surge By Jeremy Neisser It’s early May, the smell of hot dogs and hamburgers begin to fill the ballpark air. Pitcher Josh Bowman arrives his usual time at the ballpark in preparation for that night’s game. He exudes the quiet confidence even though the season has not started off the way he or the Ports envisioned. “The first month right off the bat you can tell it’s not Burlington Iowa, here in California it’s a huge plus. A lot of the same guys from Burlington are on the team so that was sweet.” Bowman added “It felt like we had a good chemistry. We were all going out there and putting our best on the field and the first half was not what we expected from a wins and losses standpoint but we kept grinding”. That workman-like mentality has paid dividends for Bowman in the second half of the season along with a change in appearance. Fresh off back-to-back outings in mid-June just before the All-Star break where he allowed just 1 earned run over 11 innings pitched while striking out 10, Bowman breaks out the razor and shaves his beard which had been a mainstay since he arrived. The clean cut Bowman explains why the beard had to go “It was a bet with a buddy and it was going south, it was really looking ratty, it was getting hotter and it had to go. Thank goodness it ended up turning into some good outings”. Heading in to the All-Star break Bowman’s earned run average is down to 4.35 with a 0-6 record through 13 starts. Not the statistics that he had hoped for but the confidence from the final two starts were a starting off point as the second half begins. And for Bowman his first start in the second half was stellar. He allowed just 2 hits over 7 innings to earn his first win of the season on June 25th. Bowman attributes the time spent working with Pitching Coach Craig Lefferts as the key to his hot start in the second half. “The main

thing is working with Lefty (Craig Lefferts) on keeping the ball down, in this league you have to learn how to throw all your pitches down and you can’t make mistakes up in the zone. If you make mistakes, you make them in the dirt. That’s been the real focus. I credit it to Lefty, he has been beating me over the head with it”. In addition to the messages received from Lefferts, Bowman added a new pitch to his arsenalthe cutter. “Gil Patterson (Oakland Athletics roving pitching instructor) taught me it & I just started throwing that in the second half and have been throwing it ever sense and getting outs with it.” Bowman adds “I gain more and more confidence throwing it, I just keep throwing it and let the weak contact come”. The culmination of the hard work paid off on July 6th as Bowman faced the hot-hitting Bakersfield Blaze. That night Bowman pitched 7 innings allowing just 1 earned run over 4 hits with career high 11 strikeouts. “That night I felt like I was back in high school, flipping in curve balls, getting in on their hands and my stuff was on that night. I felt like I had a good rhythm, I felt like if I can repeat that kind of rhythm it should be a fun second half”. Through July 24, Bowman’s second half statistics are impressive: 2 W, 2.31ERA, 39IP, 4BB, 36K’s. The second half surge for Bowman has been quite impressive and his main goal the rest of the season is to get better each outing. It’s hard to top the success that Josh has had here in the second half. And if he does, perhaps he can follow in the footsteps of other right-handed pitchers like Dan Straily or A.J. Griffin who wore the Ports uniform last season and project to be the framework of the impressive Athletics pitching staff of the future.

Sean Murphy’s Season In Review RHP Sean Murphy kicked the 2012 season off to an impressive start in Burlington, Iowa. As a starting pitcher on the Burlington Bees roster, Murphy posted an outstanding 1.97 ERA in eight games, with three wins and four losses. In 50.1 innings pitched, Sean struck out 52 batters and only gave up 11 earned runs. His success was recognized when he was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 30th, and also with his promotion to Stockton’s roster on May 23rd. Since Murphy joined the Ports, he’s continued to put up impressive numbers, and has had a handful of truly excellent starts. In his first outing in a Ports uniform, on May 24th, Murphy was perfect through 6.1 innings and gave up no earned runs. He retired the first 19 batters he faced and even struck out seven of the first nine. Then on June 8th, Sean allowed just 3 hits over 6.1 innings with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk, securing his third win with the Ports. That outing earned him his second Pitcher of the Week nod in 2012, this time in the California League for the week ending on June 11th. Murphy commented, “It definitely means a lot to me. I obviously want to be recognized, and it’s definitely an accomplishment; just to be noticed by Minor League Baseball, the California League and Midwest League as Pitcher of the Week – that’s a great honor. But I just want to stay humble and keep doing my thing.” He certainly has continued to ‘do his thing,’ and even when he has an off-inning or an outing that doesn’t quite meet up to his expectations, Murphy has been able to bounce back and re-focus for the next pitch, the next batter, and the next start. He says the key for him is just going back to the basics. “Sometimes you make bad pitches and mistakes happen, and you get hit around a little bit. What you try to do, from a pitchers standpoint, is really focus in on executing your pitches, and try to make the least amount of mistakes possible.” Murphy added, “I just try to stay perfect with every pitch.”

Although perfection with every pitch is nearly impossible, Sean’s determined to try as hard as he can. That determination is clear whenever he’s is on the mound, and is most notably demonstrated by the number of innings he throws per outing. Since he joined the Ports, Murphy has pitched 6 innings or more in nine of his fourteen starts. On May 29, Sean even threw an impressive 8 innings, striking out 8 batters and only giving up 1 run to get the win versus High Desert. “Later in the game the focus has to be elevated,” Murphy comments. “It’s not that you’re not focusing for the first couple innings, but later in the game you face a couple hitters and they’ve seen what you’re trying to do with them; so you definitely have to change your focus and really execute your pitches.” All in all, Murphy’s execution during the past few months has been outstanding, and his goal for the remainder of the season is to keep working hard and do whatever he can to help the team succeed. “I know we got off to a rough start and we’ve been a little bit shaky, but I definitely want to help the team win.” Murphy adds, “I really want to improve on my game and get better. The object is getting better every day, so that’s the biggest key for me.” Judging by his appearance on August 4th in Visalia, Murphy’s hard work is paying off and he’s started to reach his end-of-season goals. Sean threw six shutout innings on 8/4, allowing only three hits while striking out nine. His determination to get better every day is paying off and it’s clear that he will finish the season as one of the very best pitchers on the Ports roster. The future for RHP Sean Murphy appears to be extremely bright.
