Portledge Bowl

This distinction is awarded by the Board of Trustees upon the vote of the faculty to that senior who best exemplifies the character and values Portledge holds in the highest esteem, and is widely regarded as the most distinguished recognition awarded at Portledge School.

DALE JACKSON

This year’s Portledge Bowl recipient’s second-grade teacher, Mrs. Sarles, referred to him as “a sunny, confident student.” He has spent the last 11 years of his life on this campus, one he has often referred to as his second home. At Portledge we teach the pillars of kindness, purpose, honor, and respect, but it’s this student who walks through the hallways reteaching and reminding us of those values by his behavior. Mr. Cappuccio, his 9th-grade English teacher, said, “Rarely have I seen such an inquisitive and curious young man, whose pursuit of knowledge and truth is impressive.” Ms. Harrigan, his 10th Grade Math Teacher, describes him as “a lovely, kind young man who naturally has a collaborative nature. He is willing to work hard and challenge himself...and really strives for excellence.”

“A true leader!” exclaims Mr. Coleman, his 11th Grade Science teacher. Ms. Rigg, his advisor, says “His desire to contribute to all aspects of school life is made evident on a daily basis. Academically, he’s challenged himself and it has paid off.” This senior class is impressive in so many ways, and they elected Dale Jackson as their President and representative for good reason. Ms. Paik points out that Dale is in “a constant place of discovery, humility, and wonder. He is a big thinker and a formidable scholar, but never a know-it-all. He always wants to hear from his peers and his teachers, and he becomes genuinely excited by the comments and recommendations that others offer. Perhaps that is what makes him a beloved and effective member of the Student Council, not to mention a wonderful friend to his peers . . .” Ms. Crowley notes that “in our complicated world, where achievements often overshadow character, Dale is a beacon of integrity, a reminder that one's character is the true compass of their journey. As we reflect on Dale's academic prowess, his empathetic actions, his transformative habits, and his deeply impactful character, we are filled with an unshakable optimism about the future he will shape.” Ms. Paik again, points out that “he reacts like a child who was just handed an ice cream cone whenever someone says something he's never thought of before. I don't think I've ever had a student who expressed the awe of the "lightbulb moment" so frequently. Dale treats new knowledge as a revelation, and his enthusiasm for discussion encourages and draws in his peers.” His second-grade teacher nailed it. Sunny and confident indeed.

It is my sincere pleasure to present the Portledge Bowl to Dale Jackson!

Slanetz Award

The Slanetz Award is awarded to that member or members of the senior class whose academic record shows the highest level of achievement throughout their sophomore, junior, and senior years at Portledge, and is given in the hope that this scholar will apply their intellectual ability to the improvement of the human condition and for the well-being of others.

ANNA BLOCH

This year’s Slanetz Award recipient is beloved by her teachers for her intellect and high character but also stands out for her exceptional wit and humor. As I looked through her teacher comments and letters of recommendation, I had never seen so many superlatives in my life! They all say that Anna is simply the most remarkable student and one of the most exceptional people they've ever met.

Mr. Corby says “If I had to assemble a team of intelligent people who had to work through challenges in addition to working well with teammates, Anna would be my first choice.”

She is quite simply “the real deal” according to Ms. Krieger-Joven.

Dr. Atkins notes that “while Anna is a scientist at heart, she is also a polyglot who has achieved a level of fluency and sophistication even in French, the third language she has acquired.”

She’s President of the World Language Society and received multiple Love of Learning, and Academic Excellence awards several years in a row in English, Math, Science, and World Languages. She’s also received distinctions in history for her research projects. In other words, she’s excellent in just about everything we offer. She was inducted into the Cum Laude society as a junior and is not only a leader on the Science Olympiad team but she runs the Middle School Science Olympiad.

“The real deal” indeed, it is with great pleasure that I present this year’s Slanetz Award to Anna Bloch.

HOLLY SIMON

Throughout this student’s tenure at Portledge, which began in 3rd grade, her teachers have praised her curiosity and ability to analyze texts at a deep level. As a new member of the Portledge community, her 3rd-grade teacher, Ms. Stein, noticed that Holly loves to read, “she picks up a book whenever she has the opportunity…. and consistently demonstrates a deeper understanding of the text… and she LOVES Harry Potter…”

Throughout her time at Portledge, Holly’s teachers have consistently noted her love of learning. It’s not surprising that Madame Mathieu stated that Holly had fully committed to the 3rd-grade French Play in her role as Marie Antoinette. More recently, Mr. Hills mentioned that

she still “shines when someone even mentions the French Revolution.” Holly is all in. She gives you everything she has, in everything she does. Every performance, every assignment, and even every minor exchange of pleasantries in the hallway. Ms. Cavrell said, “Holly takes full ownership and responsibility for her learning and education.”

It is no shock that the skills noted in Lower School continued to develop. Her Middle School teachers noted that her contributions to class discussions reflected her depth of maturity as a thinker. In her Upper School years, a rigorous program of study was her focus. Ms. Paik wonders at how “her keen ability to spot and interpret a text’s complexities feed her already-strong tendency to identify with characters’ emotions and feel the story’s real-life significance. This is probably what makes Holly a model humanities student as well as an invaluable member of the school’s theater program.” She’s an IB diploma candidate, a member of Cum Laude, and this year she received the distinction of being a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. It is with great pleasure that I present the Barbara Lisanne Ayers Award to Holly Simon.

Head of School Award

The Head of School awards are divided into four categories, each reflecting one of the Portledge Pillars - Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.

KINDNESS

OLIVIA DRUMMOND

Ever since this student came to Portledge in 9th grade, she has impressed me and everyone around her with her maturity, positivity, and enthusiasm. The gravitational pull of her personality regularly brings together students from various social groups, and she instinctively lifts the spirits of those around her by genuinely asking how others are doing and showing sincere interest in the response. Her IB Biology and ESS teacher commented on how her interpersonal qualities enhanced the learning environment when she wrote, “This person is friendly and has an approachable demeanor that makes her an excellent partner for collaborative work in the classroom and within the community.

She is a valuable group member who innately understands when to listen and when to lead.” Students are drawn to this student’s warm demeanor because she is such a kind and positive friend. A conscientious relationship builder, she attracts others with her infectious smile and energy. As a longstanding member of the Varsity soccer team, Olivia is someone the underclassmen look up to as she would often reach out to the 8th and 9th graders on the team giving them words of encouragement, something she acknowledged was done when she was that age. On stage whether at Coffee Houses or in the Black Box - she is not just a talented performer, but again one who looks to support others. When a younger student was visibly shaken after a performance, Olivia pulled her to the side and spent the time to reassure her. Service is another area in which this student actively engages with the community, not just to gain hours but to build relationships. This year several students returned to the Glen Cove Senior Center and when Olivia walked in, a lovely “regular’ put her hands up and yelled “It’s YOU!” and Olivia quickly ran over to give a hug. The two remain in contact.

Congratulations to Oliva Drummond for the Head of School Award for Kindness.

HONOR

CARINA CAVIEZEL

Honor by definition is “an adherence to what is right;” in practice, it means that the person conducts themselves by the highest moral standards. This student, throughout her long, storied and accomplished career at Portledge, has been perhaps one of the most honorable students among our ranks. She embodies the aspirational ideal of moral courage; she is a person who does what is right even when no one is watching. Of course, we all know how hard this is to do; so what is additionally admirable about this person is that she makes it look easy. Her teachers adore her, not just because of her significant work ethic and organizational skills, but because of how central a role she plays in establishing a positive and engaged classroom dynamic. She is an enthusiastic and willing participant.

She thinks critically at the highest levels and sets an excellent example for her peers by recognising when she has room to grow, remaining open to feedback and constructive criticism. Outside the classroom, her positivity and school spirit brightens every aspect of our community. She knows the little things add up to the big things: she helps her advisory win a pizza party by donating the most socks and canned goods during a holiday drive; she goes “all in” with the costume themes during Spirit Week. We have also witnessed her leadership in larger ways, such as helping the soccer team win our league championship, serving as a peer leader, or being one of the most consistent members of our Concert and Select Choruses. Passionate about environmental advocacy, she has been a longtime leader on our Green Team, spearheading numerous efforts to engage and educate our community, including organizing activities during Extended Advisory sessions and bringing water bottle fillers and recycling bins to campus. A smaller group has witnessed her leadership on Honor Council, and the adults in the room have been continually inspired by her ability to navigate complex and challenging situations thoughtfully. Her leadership and fidelity for ethics, adherence and respect for community norms, and compassion and advocacy for students in challenging situations exemplifies the honor with which she conducts herself in the most trying of circumstances. Carina Caviezel walks the walk, and our community is better and stronger not just because of what she does but because of who she is. Congratulations, Carina, on receiving the Head of School Award for Honor.

PURPOSE

LAURA PECK

It is rare for a high school student to demonstrate a clear sense of purpose even while remaining open to growth. But this student is a rare person. She speaks eloquently about her early interest in mathematics, and how that early talent was nurtured by her father — a math teacher — and supportive instructors. She reflects articulately as to how hockey has played such an important role in molding her identity and inspired her to dedicate herself to something larger than individual pursuits. She recognizes that the IB Diploma Program’s focus on questioning complements her inquisitive nature. Although she may see herself as a “math person”, her IB English teacher wrote, “Laura has a remarkable gift for communication. Whether running successfully for student

council, composing an incisive English essay, or participating thoughtfully in class discussions, Laura’s language skills are impressive and awe-inspiring. During class, Laura is not merely someone who speaks just to hear her views praised and approved. By contrast, Laura recognizes that a real leader aims to make the entire group work to its full potential. As a result, she will often encourage reluctant classmates to develop their ideas. Instead of allowing them to settle for easy, familiar answers, she exhorts them to seek the truth. In essence, she often helps her peers and her teachers to discover something new.” Laura consistently distinguishes herself as especially thoughtful, kind, and collaborative in every way, whether it’s highlighting the strengths of her fellow Peer Leader applicants during her group interview, sticking around to reset chairs and tables after meetings, or helping chaperones sort and pass out bagged lunches on community service trips. Her sense of purpose as a student and as a person is extraordinary.

Congratulations to Laura Peck for the Head of School Award for Purpose.

RESPECT

DANIEL OKORONKWO

For this recipient, I wonder if I should start by asking the crowd to chant our pillars? “Kindness, Purpose, Honor, Respect!” That was okay, but we all know that no one does it better, more earnestly, sincerely or respectfully than our outgoing Student Council President, Daniel Okoronkwo. I think we can all agree that Danny’s personal and leadership qualities are truly exceptional. His softspoken and optimistic demeanor wins over everyone he meets. He is perennially positive, caring, kind and thoughtful. But we didn’t always know him in this way. Many of us first came to know Danny as a scholar athlete. When you saw Danny on the court, it was vital he took pride in playing defense because he enjoys supporting those around him. He understands that the success of the group depends

on individuals setting aside egos and working together. Defence allows him to flex his skills of observation and strategy, and apply them to setting his team up for success. As Danny gradually recognised how much people trusted him and his positive impact on others, he decided he could make a real difference in our community. When he decided to run for Student Body President, he won in a landslide. Not due to any kind of popularity contest or show-boating antics but because Danny is a humble, kind, earnest person of good character. To quote from his election speech: “I want our Portledge community to feel that there is a space for everyone truly. Our high school experience shapes the person we grow up to be, and I want all of our experiences to leave positive and everlasting impacts on the people we become in the future. I only hope to be part of why your high school experience can be one of the greatest experiences you will forever have.” Since he has assumed the role, he has reshaped our weekly Upper School Town Meeting to be more upbeat and student-centered. His speech at our All-School convocation in a blazing September heat wave literally brought the house down with a spontaneous standing ovation. To say Danny leads by example and with respect for all is the understatement of the year. He has made every Friday more upbeat, and his impact on our community will be felt for years to come. I am thrilled to honor Danny Okoronkwo with the Head of School Award for Respect.

FOUR PILLAR AWARD

This Head of School Award connects to all four Portledge Pillars.

AIDAN KIYASHKA

If you want to see the Portledge embodiment of the Renaissance Man, look up (way up), and you will see Aidan Kiyashka. Confident but humble, playful but mature, sharp-witted but soft-hearted, Aidan’s interests and impact are varied, but he is steadfast and never scattered. Is there anyone who doesn't like Aidan? I don't think there is. And is there anything Aidan doesn't do? If there is, he'll try it and dive right into the experience! Perhaps that's why Aidan gets along so well with everyone - he tries a bit of everything and always gives his best, so he forms positive relationships with everyone. Aidan is a devoted academic, a dedicated athlete, a beloved thespian, a responsible member of Student Council, a talented visual artist, a collaborative leader on the Yearbook, and

probably a few other things that I'm missing! Aidan can go from helping classmates with homework to jocularly celebrating with his teammates to soulfully playing piano and singing a ballad at “Student Open Mic” with ease, all in the space of five or six hours! How he does so much without losing his creative, ever-ready energy is beyond me, but it can truly be said that Aidan puts everything into everything, and his earnest dedication touches others no matter what the activity. This is why he is such a good teammate, such a staple in the school plays, and so trusted as his peers' Student Council officer. Charismatic, open-minded, and open-hearted, Aidan’s daily, even minute-by-minute actions personify the intersection of our Four Pillars and it is a pleasure to recognize him for his exceptional contributions to our community.

FOUR PILLAR AWARD

This Head of School Award connects to all four Portledge Pillars.

GABE CAPPS

Recently we hosted our Young Alumni Brunch where the seniors are inducted into the Portledge Alumni Association and are invited to stand and reflect on what has made their Portledge experience memorable and meaningful. One student was mentioned more than any other as the person who had welcomed a new student, celebrated a classmate, and just in general made others’ lives better by his actions, large and small in the community. Similarly, teachers literally cannot stop gushing about this student:“Amazing!” “Mature!” “Respectful!” “The most polite student I’ve ever had!” “Earnest” And over and over again: “Conscientious!”

Because Gabe Capps is always earnest, always diligent, always kind, always respectful; he is always working hard, and as a result, he is always making things easier for everyone around him. One faculty member wrote, “For as long as I’ve known him, Gabe has been the embodiment of the Portledge Pillars. He is never without a smile or a kind hello, regardless of what he has going on. It has been an honor to watch his growth over the years. Gabe is a living example of moral courage and constantly strives to be an upstander. He balances his life as a student-athlete with his proactive mentoring of younger students and is a leader within his social circle.”

Profoundly sensitive, Gabe’s natural empathy is so deep and so sincere that he sees the good in everyone and every situation - no adult in our community has ever heard him utter an unkind word. As a chess camp counselor, Gabe always took time to develop the novice and less experienced players with a kind word or new strategy; his insight into human nature and how others feel guides his every action. In his college recommendation, one of his teachers wrote, “What truly sets Gabe apart is his incredible character and integrity. I have yet to meet a student who better exemplifies the Portledge Pillars (Kindness, Honor, P,urpose and Respect). Every day, he seems to find a way to positively impact the school community. He is a consummate team player who is always willing to assist classmates and contribute to an inclusive learning environment. Gabe Gapps literally is the Portledge Pillars.” It is my tremendous pleasure to recognize Gabe Capps as a recipient of the Four Pillars Head of School Award.

Hahn Enviromental Award

The Hahn Environmental Award recognizes the student who exhibits extraordinary exemplary leadership in the field of sustainability both globally and within the Portledge community.

CARINA CAVIEZEL

As a long term member and co-President of the Green Team, this student stands out because of her persistence and positive encouragement to underclassmen about joining the club. Instrumental in setting up all-school programs like the Green Team Town Meeting presentation, which educated students about the effects of fast fashion on the health of the Earth, she’s a true servant leader. She was also active in fund-raising for the benches with solar chargers that will be installed near the Upper School garden beds. As a long-time student at Portledge School, this student has been dedicated to enhancing our community.

Ms. Chiu notes that she “impressively conducted research to examine the effect of building materials on the heat island effect of cities and for her extended essay she took on the challenge of understanding the water quality of Oyster Bay Harbor and its effect on the oyster population.” Her work with the Green Team has certainly lived up to her own definition of being a good learner. She is consistently positive in her approach to all areas of her life including her stellar academic performance, her leadership on the soccer field, and her harmonious sounds during Select Chorus performances. For her exceptional abilities, and consistent commitment to challenging herself and the Portledge community to become more environmentally conscious, it is my pleasure to recognize Carina Caviezel as a recipient of the Hahn Environmental Award.

ELIZABETH SINGER

As someone who shares a passion for the environment along with her cowinner, our next Hahn award recipient has made great strides with the Green Team. As a long term member and co-President of the Green Team, she stands out because of her persistence and positive encouragement to underclassmen about joining the club. Her positivity and encouragement inspire other students to become better stewards of the environment. Instrumental in setting up all-school programs like the Town Meeting activities which educated classmates about environmental and climate change topics, she’s a champion

of this work. She was also active in fund-raising for the benches with solar panels near the Upper School Science wing which will help all students to appreciate the beautiful Portledge campus.Ms. Chiu notes that she “impressively conducted research to explore the environmental value systems of the Portledge community.” For her extended essay, she expanded her research to the global community to examine the effect that education for women has on improving the environment in Ethiopia. For her exceptional abilities, and her consistent commitment to challenging herself and the community to do more to help Portledge and beyond become more environmentally conscious, it is my pleasure to recognize Elizabeth Singer as a recipient of the Hahn Environmental Award.

Bliss Award

The Bliss Award in Music is presented to the musician of the graduating class who displays extraordinary commitment, enthusiasm for the creative process, and appreciation for the craftsmanship needed to excel in Music. One senior student this year has done all of that, and so much more. From the first week of school this fall, this student showed something different than in the past several years. There was a new hunger and desire to develop and grow as a musician. In early September, I was approached and asked “Mr. Suzda… I want to learn the piano…. Can you help?” This simple question led to weekly piano lessons which were first thing on Monday mornings, and which this student never missed! After several weeks, yet more desire manifested with a simple question of “Mr. Suzda… can you help me learn the guitar?” Each week, this student came back with new chords and a passion for learning and creating that I have rarely seen as an educator. Then, from a project in his IB Music course

where students had to create digital compositions on a computer, he approached me and said “I made a song… do you want to hear it?” Since then, every free second of every single day on campus, Jordan Meirowitz has been in the music studio in the middle school recording and producing songs for his upcoming album. If you have the pleasure of hearing any of his tracks, and I truly hope that you do, you will surely be moved by the musical maturity displayed on all of his compositions. Watching Jordan write, arrange, and produce music himself is the height of the creativity that we strive to instill in all of our students. As a performer, Jordan passionately led the Jazz Band with skill and determination and used his phenomenal improvisation skills during concerts. As the heart and soul of the group on stage, smiling ear to ear when sitting behind the drums at performances, he raised the level of the group to new heights. Best of luck next year Jordan as you work towards your music degree. Please know that the music department is proud to have had you as a student and that you will always have our support here at Portledge. Congratulations Jordan!

Bliss Award

BlissAward-Theatre AVAFALTISCHEK

The Bliss Award for Theatre goes to a student who has been the backbone of the US Theatre program for the last four years. She initially stood out to me when, in 8th grade, she assisted and worked backstage on the Middle School play. I was impressed by her ability to remain calm during high-pressure situations and by the way she garnered respect from everyone in the cast. It occurred to me that her personality gave her a very specific set of skills. Skills that successful stage managers inherently possess. I approached her about exploring stage management in the Upper School and she not only agreed, but threw herself into the job, asking questions, challenging herself, and welcoming the position of being a full-fledged professional-level stage manager here in high school.

It is easy to see and praise the ability of our incredible Portledge performers because we see their skills on stage, but it’s harder to fully appreciate what it takes behind the scenes to make Theatre magic happen.

The success of our shows here rely on both and this student exemplifies that. Her love for theatre has led her to take every Theatre class, to stage manage every Upper School musical production, to learn how to run the light board and design lights for multiple showcase performances, to assist on Middle School and Lower School shows, to direct an original play and to be co-president of the Theatre Club.

All this culminates in the unbelievably exciting next chapter of her life, and I am very proud to say she is the first-ever Portledge Theatre student to pursue Stage Management as a career by attending UCLA’s design and production program next year. She is truly irreplaceable and a theatre star in her own way. The Bliss Award for Theatre goes to Ava Faltischek.

Bliss Award

After a long examination of what we as an art department look for in a Bliss Award nominee, one name kept coming up, someone whom I don’t think has any clue that they were being considered for this award. Too often, art is seen as recreation, with participation being all that is needed to fulfill the activity, hence strengthening the myth that art is something gifted not learned. This student recognized that art requires thought, research, and practice to achieve all that art has to offer. Their openness to try a variety of art electives, and achieving well-earned A’s in each class, demonstrated their understanding that an education is not just a diploma but an accumulation of worthwhile experiences. It is with great joy that the Visual Arts Department recognizes Stella Green with this year’s Bliss Award.

Senior Class Award

The Senior Class Award, upon vote of the senior class members, and affirmation of the faculty, is presented to that member of the graduating class who demonstrates a high degree of kindness and generosity towards friends, faculty, and the Portledge community.

ELIZABETH SINGER

Senior Athletic Award

Senior Athletic Awards are presented in recognition of overall contribution to the school’s athletic program through outstanding effort on behalf of team play and sportsmanship, and excellence in a number of athletic endeavors. Two students earned this award for 2023-2024.

OLIVER BAHNIK

Oliver Bahnik was described by his advisor as someone who has transitioned into a natural leader and mentor. This student-athlete arrived on campus as a 9th grader for soccer pre-season, and once he stepped on the field, he never looked back. Whether it be the soccer pitch, basketball court, or lacrosse field, his strong physical presence could be felt throughout the entire playing area. He serves as a role model and leads by example both physically and strategically, while always emitting respect for his teammates and opponents. He was the backbone of the Varsity Boys Soccer team and has been the best player at his position in the PSAA since he became a starter as only a 9th grader; who only improved each year during his tenure. He helped lead the team to multiple PSAA Championships, and a historic run in the NYSAIS

Championships this year. He’s the type of player who would put his body on the line to help his team win, just ask the Oyster Bay Soccer Team as you can still probably find some of his teeth on the lower field. As a 3 year starter in lacrosse, his coach raved about him and his ability to read the field and marveled at his stellar senior season. As a captain, he led the team in goals scored and consistently helped clear the ball to keep his team in the game. He was a key piece on the team during their PSAA Championships and NYSAIS runs and proved to be a safety net when the team found themselves struggling. This student-athlete is more than just an athlete. He is someone who has grown immensely since his time here at Portledge. His advisor also stated that “He has remained humble while his skills and confidence have grown. He is reflective and wants to better himself not only as a student-athlete but as an overall human in general.” I have had the privilege of getting to coach and know this student for 4 years and I cannot echo enough what his other coaches and teachers have said about him. We have been a part of 2 PSAA Championships together and I know both Coach Cip and I agree that this wouldn’t have been possible without all your efforts. The decision to choose you as the Senior Athletic Award recipient was an easy one as you embody everything that Portledge looks for in its athletes.

Congratulations to Ollie Bahnik for being this year’s senior athletic award winner!

Senior Athletic Award

Senior Athletic Awards are presented in recognition of overall contribution to the school’s athletic program through outstanding effort on behalf of team play and sportsmanship, and excellence in a number of athletic endeavors. Two students earned this award for 2023-2024.

DANIELA BENO

The 2023-24 Senior Athletic Award is for a studentathlete who not only excelled in the classroom but also on the playing field. Her growth within the four years of High School has shown her tenacity and strength to overcome obstacles and take full advantage of the opportunities in front of her.

While serving as an inspiration and mentor to all the younger defenders in the program, this athlete has been the core of a dominant back line that has led Portledge Varsity Girls Soccer to three consecutive championships. Her loyalty and leadership to the two programs she was a part of were instrumental in the team's development and there will be some big shoes to fill in the upcoming years.

Her advisor depends on her as a leader as she has grown into her own confidence, and has helped propel their advisory group forward. This student used her organizational skills to help Blue White Day move smoothly, and her school blue spirit truly shined through. As an IB diploma student, this athlete has also challenged herself in the classroom as well.

I have gotten to know this athlete as a kind, compassionate team player who is tough as nails. She is an athlete who I would love as a teammate but hate to go against on the field. This is a testament to her commitment and dedication to her craft. She is a true unsung hero who leads by example and shows that competitive edge and field sense.

Daniela Beno’s commitment to Portledge Athletics definitely has been felt throughout her time here, and we thank her for all her hard work, and dedication to the Panthers. We want to wish Beno the best of luck on her next journey to Babson College where I know she will thrive and continue to make a true impact on their campus.

Student Council Award

The Student Council Award is presented, upon vote of the Council members, to that student who has displayed outstanding school spirit and a commitment to the Portledge community throughout their involvement in academics, community service, athletics and extracurricular activities.

Senior Project Award

AVA FALTISCHEK, HOLLY SIMON

Life or Death Reading

This next project of distinction description could be a matter of life or death! Starting in 10th grade, Holly Simon began to write a script that focused on issues that American high schoolers are confronted with, hoping to drive teenagers and adults to confront them through an honest portrayal of them. With the decision of what to do for a senior project, for Holly it was a no brainer. Ava Faltischek helped to produce the reading and brought the writing to life, by using her knowledge and experience in theatre to make the portrayal accurate and effective. What resulted was a beautiful partnership and a project that left an impact on all who attended, and those that took part in it. Congratulations to both Holly and Ava, on your very successful creation and read-through of your original play, Life or Death!

DANIELA BENO

Guide Dog Foundation

This next award of project distinction is paws-itively outstanding! Paws of War is an organization that trains service animals for the brave veterans who have defended our country. Daniela Beno’s love for animals and drive to help others is what landed her on the idea of learning basic training techniques for service dogs and then fostering one in her home. Though her father was not so thrilled with the idea of another dog in the house, Daniela still is determined to use the skills that she acquired, build upon them, and continue to inspire more people to give thanks to those service members who have helped us. Daniela, thank you for being so selfless and for thinking of others. You truly captured the essence of service in your project.

Senior Project Award

ISHAAN SRIVASTAVA

A Multilingual Approach to Music

This final award of distinction goes to someone whose goal was to demonstrate the specific nuances of language through music. Ishaan Srivastava has been teaching himself Japanese for the past few years. For his project, he wrote a song in Japanese, recorded himself, and produced the song with the purpose of examining the differences in meaning between the lyrics in both the English and Japanese language and portraying the inherent values unique to each culture. The song, appropriately called Sakura, (Sa-ku-ra- short ku), or cherry blossoms, was inspired by the connection that Japanese culture has to cherry blossoms, as well as the Portledge campus. If you haven’t heard his song yet, I recommend that you reach out to Ishaan and follow him on Spotify! This will be the hit song of the summer of 2024! Congratulations to you Ishaan! Your creativity and determination are impressive.

MICHELLE TUGULDUR

This year the English department is happy to give the 9th-grade Love of Learning Award to Michelle Tuguldur. Starting high school — especially for someone new to Portledge — can be tough, can be challenging, can be intimidating. A love of learning can propel a student to succeed in this new environment. Michelle is the type of student who, when assigned homework to read, comes to class enthusiastic to discuss it. There is excitement in unpacking the twists and turns of the story. This love of reading then manifests itself in exceptional written work. Whether crafting poems, devising original fairy tales, or composing a speech, Michelle always produced something compelling. She will take a small assignment, like visually representing a fairy tale, and make it memorable by drawing a lasagna to represent the layers of the story. It is our pleasure to present this award to Michelle Tuguldur for her wonderful performance in 9th-grade English.

SOLEIL CAN

The English department is excited to present Soleil Can with the Academic Excellence Award. From the start of the school year, Soleil has exhibited an excitement to learn, a hunger for achieving personal growth in the classroom, and an admirable curiosity. With each assignment, class discussion, and creative project, she has continuously shown how talented she truly is. Each day, she brings forth new ideas, weaves new layers into our discussions, and exudes the qualities every teacher hopes for in their classroom. Although Soleil strives for and achieves academic excellence, it is her passion for literature and writing that makes her an exceptional Portledge student. Truly, she is the student you never want to leave your classroom. She is academically beyond her years, and we look forward to seeing her incredible accomplishments in the future. Her work ethic, determination, positive energy, and kindness towards everyone around her are nothing short of excellent. CARSYN CAMMERER

Carsyn is a curious, engaged learner who actively participates in class discussions and activities. Whether annotating a book, responding to discussion questions, or completing group activities, she is fully invested in the process and strives to produce her best work. She is an independent learner who asks carefully curated questions to edit and polish her assignments. Her goal always goes beyond earning a high grade; it is to feel satisfied and proud of her completed work. From drafting a persuasive essay about her favorite hobby to composing a suspenseful and imagery-rich dystopian story, Carsyn is passionate about her assignments. Her intrinsic motivation is apparent in all she produces, and her love for learning is evident during each class period. I sincerely hope that Carsyn continues to foster her love for writing and to carry it with her throughout her academic life and beyond!

MASON LEE

Mason Lee excelled in every aspect of our English class this year. His valuable insight, spontaneous and enthusiastic response to literature, and readiness to share his ideas with others enriched the classroom atmosphere and helped set the bar high for his colleagues. In his writing and speaking, Mason strives for precision and excellence, unwilling to abandon a word, a sentence, or a paragraph until it conveys exactly the meaning he intends. He has excellent editing skills, which he uses to help his friends and also to revise articles for the new Portledge Press. He throws himself wholeheartedly into everything he does, whether class presentations, literary essays, or creative projects. Mason’s rhetorical gifts, on display in his dramatic Student Council election speech this spring, also shone through in an articulate, amusing Book Talk on The Catcher in the Rye. I’m sure that Mason will continue his quest for academic gold as he journeys on through the literary landscapes of IB English.

KAJAL KHANDELWAL

Kajal Khandelwhal is the recipient of this year's 11th Grade Love of Learning in English Award. Kajal is excited to learn about anything and everything. How is it possible for a person to say the words, "Oh my gosh, that's so interesting!" so frequently, and yet with such genuineness every time? It's possible if that person is Kajal. Kajal exhibits fervent intellectual curiosity in English, specifically, because of her love of story. Kajal treats every story, whether a thick novel or a quick anecdote, as a window into other worlds. Her mind is not merely open to others' perspectives, but hungry for them. She treats a story as a nourishing, precious gift. With her reverence for stories, scholarly joy, and exploratory nature, Kajal truly epitomizes the Love of Learning described by this award.

Eleventh-Grade English Academic Excellence

JULIENNE DEVERSON

This year's 11th grade Excellence in English Award recipient has an impeccable sense of how small details can have great implications. Julienne Deverson’s acumen as a literary analyst is reflected in her mastery of textile art, home gardening, and creating pocket-sized zines. She sees how just the right stitch contributes to a larger tapestry, just as she sees how a single word can set the tone of a whole passage. And Julienne understands how, like tiny seeds that grow into bountiful gardens, small packets of information can be cultivated into entirely new perspectives. Julienne's eye for detail allows her to grasp the larger picture while still appreciating the smaller threads that comprise it. With an eye for both small nuances and the bigger picture, Julienne reads with scholarly enthusiasm and writes with creative passion. We honor her mind-blowing insights and the beautiful written work she has composed throughout the year.

AIDANKIYASHKA

Aidan approaches the study of literature with deep and genuine interest. He is a curious inquirer who interrogates the text with focused specificity, often identifying the nuances of a passage that have eluded his classmates. As a result, his written commentary is complex and precise in its execution. A key point may depend on the subtle connotation of a particular phrase, and yet Aidan can home in on that single word, unpacking it expertly and with apparent ease. He also balances astute critical commentary with an unwavering generosity of spirit. This equanimity extends to the texts under examination as well as his classmates. A keen listener, he shows a genuine and vested interest in his peers’ ideas and works tirelessly to understand their distinctive points of view. Aidan’s example demonstrates how the sensitive study of literature extends to one’s deeper personal relationships and enriches the human experience.

HOLLYSIMON

Holly has established a dynastic hold over the study of English throughout her Portledge career. (Fortunately, her reign has been a benevolent one.) Whether in writing or during class discussions, her thoughts are invariably lucid and adept. Most people speak or write in halting sentence fragments, groping uncertainly to find their point. By contrast, Holly thinks and expresses herself in polished full paragraphs. Her commentary is unfailingly marked by an impressive, wide-ranging depth, as well as an exacting focus. Her mind is always crackling with the synaptic lightning that accompanies perceptive connections. More importantly, however, Holly personifies the value and purpose of humanistic learning. She can critically analyze a text within its particular context. But she also delights in the subtleties of wordplay, giggles at ironic and absurd situations, and derives deep pleasure from the art of storytelling. In short, she recognizes that learning can be — and perhaps should be — an unapologetically joyful undertaking.

SEBASTIANREALE

The 9th grade student most deserving of the award for Love of Learning in Music is Sebastian Reale. His desire to learn and grow seemed to increase day by day and week by week throughout the entire school year. Whether on the drumset, the piano, or the keyboard, any teacher or student in the middle school from 7:45 through 8:20 any morning is familiar with the sounds of Sebastian working out new chords and rhythms, perfecting a passage for his NYSSMA solo, or learning a drum part for a coffeehouse performance. Sebastian’s relentless practicing was infectious, and his dedication helped allow the Jazz Band to tackle the most demanding program it has ever undertaken. Whether on stage during Blue+White Day Talent Show or working on a piece in his Solo/Chamber course in a practice room, he is constantly smiling to be making music and has the desire inside him to be the best musician he can be. MADISONCOHEN

Madison Cohen is as gifted a flutist as Portledge has ever had, however, her true gift is her remarkable dedication to the rehearsal process. While performing on stage is the end result after months of rehearsals, Madison understands that the first time playing the music is as important as a dress rehearsal and that bringing excellence each and every day allows the group to shine on stage. Madison always comes to class meetings with intense focus, dedication, and, of course, a pencil at the ready to take diligent notes and meticulously mark her parts. Giving attention to every musical detail, she absorbs each lesson and makes changes so that the Concert Band sounds its best. Madison is truly gifted musically, earning two perfect scores on her NYSSMA All-State auditions, and was a recent finalist at the 2024 Long Island Flute Club Competition where she dazzled the audience and judges. She always wants to improve and help those around her and the music department proudly awards the Love of Learning Award in the 11th grade to Madison Cohen.

Discovering Jazz and improvisation this year, she was able to express herself musically in a new and mature way. Additionally, Charlotte shined in IB Music where her passion for composition, theory, and musical details truly shined. She not only researched pieces in class above and beyond the required scope, but took it upon herself to go deeper into all of her assignments whether they be ear-training, rhythmic exercises, dictations, or listening assignments. CHRISHONG

Chris Hong has always been more than a wonderfully gifted musician who works tirelessly to help those around him musically. Chris is a student who has almost single-handedly reshaped the Portledge music department. From being the first instrumentalist at Portledge selected to All-State in well over 10 years, and the first Portledge musician ever to be selected to participate in the All-Eastern ensembles, Chris’ quiet and humble approach to music set him apart. Despite his countless accolades and prestigious outside ensembles, he remains the model for hard work and dedication to learning in a music classroom. Always early to band class, he helped set up chairs, and music stands, and did everything extra that no one ever saw in order to simply help his classmates. This year, Chris signed up for IB Music as a senior, simply because he was curious about learning more theory as he wanted to expand his musical understanding. Chris Hong loves music, and loves to learn about music, and there is no more deserving student than him for the Love of Learning Award in Music.

LEILACARNEVALE

Leila Carnevale has always been an exceptional musician, and this year, she truly stepped into a top performing and leadership role in two extremely demanding ensembles. As both a stand-out pianist and vocalist in the Jazz Band and Select Chorus, she led each ensemble through challenging arrangements at both the winter and spring concerts, as well as for various assemblies. Always coming to Jazz Band rehearsals ready to work with a smile on her face, she led by example and set a positive tone for success in each and every meeting. In the Select Chorus, Leila not only added rich color to the melodies, but offered to both create and sing intricate harmony parts supporting the group through demanding passages from the first rehearsal to the final culminating performances, demonstrating her powerful voice while taking lead vocals during the opening piece of the Spring Concert. Leila was committed to attending additional rehearsals, even coming to class during end of year senior exams simply due to her passion for helping the Select Chorus sound its best. As a vocal soloist at the Portledge Music Showcase this winter, she shined on stage and dazzled the audience with her vocal control and technique. She knows all the complicated rules and can write and speak at a high level. She thinks deeply and cares deeply. DISTINGUISHEDSCHOLAROF

This award is granted to students who show a passion for World Languages and Cultures and outstanding dedication to and achievement in their studies. Anna Bloch’s French teacher from Greenvale told Madame Atkins that she thought Anna must have been French in a previous life. Even at a young age, Anna had an unbelievably strong command of the language; she understood complicated texts and was able to use its syntax and subtleties when writing or speaking. Today, we can say that Anna has indeed been one of the most remarkable students of French to pass through Portledge’s halls in the past two decades. Aside from Anna’s natural gifts, the first quality that defines her as a student is her boundless curiosity. Equally important is the fact that Anna satisfies that curiosity by approaching each lesson with humility- regardless of the topic at hand, whether it be literature, grammar, or culture with a big or small “c”, Anna is poised to absorb as much knowledge as possible, and to use it to enhance not only her ability to decipher authentic material but also to express herself with great authenticity and sophistication. Throughout her high school years, Anna has been an exemplary student. She has been a supportive and kind classmate, and her insightful questions have enriched the learning experience of everyone in the room.

Anna earned top grades in all of her advanced-level courses, in addition to many awards. As an eleventh grader, she took the level 5 National French contest, the highest level offered, and won a Gold Medal. We congratulate Anna on this award for Distinguished Achievement in Language Study, and hope that her love of languages continues for a lifetime.
