A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Portledge School shares this punctilious and informative document with our community to provide insight into the school’s pecuniary standing, to demonstrate the profound impact of your contributions, and to thank those who have graciously shown their support over the last school year. This Impact Report provides graphs, lists, and numbers that show how your support has directly affected the day to day of the school. I also hope that this report will paint a clear picture of how your investment in Portledge has significantly enhanced the lives of our students and our community as a whole.

As I reflect on the 2022-2023 school year, a flurry of acts of kindness, shows of honor, purpose, and respect, and most importantly, happy faces flood my memory. Our compassionate and forward thinking students went above and beyond for their community, with almost ten students from the graduating class being recognized for volunteering service hours well beyond their requirement. We watched as our students lived out the Portledge Pillars on a daily basis, from the classroom to the playing fields, lifting one another up while expanding on their own passions.

Portledge students are equipped to build the integrity and moral rectitude essential for them to navigate an increasingly complex world. Most notably so, in the Class of 2023, as they go on to their next chapter and take with them the values instilled in them at Portledge. And what an impressive group they are! Schools such as Cornell University, Duke, Texas Christian University, University of Virginia, Boston College and University, New York University, Johns Hopkins University,

Southern Methodist University, and the University of Southern California, among many other wonderful colleges, are fortunate to have them as part of their freshman class.

We also made some significant strides in our Strategic Plan 2022-2025 work. We had a record number of faculty participate in outside professional development (PD) that directly benefits the student learning experience. Lower School faculty attended a three-day intensive training to implement the IB Primary Years Program. We have developed a more diverse hiring committee and mentor program for new hires, implemented DEI Coffee Chats for the parent/caregiver community, and began an audit of our curriculum and community partnerships. We redesigned the Portledge website and engaged alumni we have not had touch with in quite some time. And we continue our work to complete our wellness curriculum and the building which will be its home, The Chen Athletic & Wellness Center.

I’m pleased to report that construction on The Chen Athletic & Wellness Center is moving along at pace, with minor hiccups due to the delay in steel delivery. We are still on track to open its doors in the late Spring of 2024. Our student athletes won several major conference finals and state bids in a plethora of competitions including soccer, golf, and basketball. From the fields to the stage, Portledge students performed for sold-out audiences in performances of Clue, Mid-80’s Night’s Dream, and Urinetown. In June, we welcomed our community onto campus for our End of Year events, celebrating what was truly a special year at Portledge.

It is your continued generosity that elevates the wealth of experience at Portledge, from faculty training and professional development to enhanced programming and extracurricular activities for our students. We continue to be at the forefront of innovation in academics, athletics, and student well-being and that is thanks to you. Your support has led a banner fundraising year, not only surpassing the $9 million benchmark in funds for the new Athletic & Wellness Center, but going beyond our Annual Fund goals as well.

Let us take the generosity of spirit and the hard work of this past year to make the 20232024 school year one of significantly raised ambition. We have the ideas. We have the community. We have the values. We should be proud of all that was accomplished this past year and I am eager to take the vigor and determination of the last year into the new year with renewed strength.

MISSION

Portledge School is an independent, PreNursery through Twelfth Grade preparatory day school. The school’s coordinated sequential programs, beginning with the Reggio Emilia program in Early Childhood, provide a rigorous academic environment, preparing students to live responsible and productive lives. Dedicated teachers use small class size to deliver knowledge based on inquiry and inspired by a student-centered learning approach. Individual talents are nurtured through the arts, athletics, and a variety of community and travel programs that all emphasize the Portledge Pillars of kindness, purpose, honor, and respect.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

Portledge School and the Board of Trustees have long held a commitment to offer financial aid to help foster a dynamic and diverse student body. This fund celebrates the exceptional dedication and passion of its founder, Anne M. Thomas, and provides annual income to support the maintenance of the Anne M. Thomas Lower School.

Established by an anonymous donor in honor of founder and former trustee William T. Dunn, Jr. (1965-1992), income from this endowment supports faculty salaries and benefits.

BARBARA LISANNE AYERS MEMORIAL FUND

This fund supports an award presented annually at graduation to that member of the senior class who, throughout his or her career at Portledge, has best exemplified the character and achievement of Barbara Lisanne Ayers (Class of 1977) through profound devotion to learning together with a consistently high level of academic accomplishment.

Established by Alumni Parents Caryl and Len Shapiro this fund was created to provide tuition assistance for a qualified student with financial need to attend Portledge School. This fund serves to recognize the importance of a quality independent school education and generously provides these funds to open that opportunity to all students regardless of financial background.

PALAGONIA FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

Established by the Palagonia Family, the purpose of this fund is to subsidize the tuition of two student-athletes. This endowment serves to marry the family’s passion for athletics with their firm belief in the impact of a solid educational foundation on a child’s life.

This fund supports an award given annually at graduation to a member of the Portledge School faculty for outstanding dedication to students and exemplary commitment to teaching within and beyond the classroom.
