Noticeboard Congratulations to the School Council pupils who helped make Ukraine badges to sell in school to support the people of Ukraine.

Noticeboard INDIVIDUAL LAMDA SPEECH AND DRAMA TUITION @ PORTLAND PLACE SCHOOL This is a reminder to all pupils and parents that spaces are now available to all year groups for LAMDA speech and drama private tuition. This exciting service is being provided by Artisan Theatre School tutors, who are professional actors and directors and fully qualified LAMDA teachers. This means that Portland Place pupils will now have the opportunity to develop their communicational skills through the spoken word.

Noticeboard LAMDA examinations are designed to equip candidates, whatever their age or aspirations, with a range of skills that will serve them throughout life. LAMDA exams are recognised qualifica-

tions that carry UCAS points, much the same as grades in music and allows students the opportunity to develop their drama skills, diction/clarity, communicational skills, public speaking and confidence! As well as the skills developed in acting, pupils will also learn various methods in performance, which in turn boosts self-esteem.

Preparation for an examination can:   

Unlock the imagination and creative thinking Develop communication skills Refine technical skills and artistry



Promote team working.

The examinations themselves provide students with the opportunity to build self-confidence, acquire skill certification for career development and to make contact with expert practitioner examiners outside the immediate teaching environment.

Tuition is available one to one or as a pair (depending on preference).

FEES The fee for an individual lesson (30 minutes) will be £27.10 The fee for paired lessons will be £13.00 per pupil

30 lessons are generally given throughout the course of the academic year. This may mean that a different number of lessons may be given per term, depending on the length of the term.

Tuition fees will be invoiced directly from Artisan Theatre School, prior to the term commencing and must be settled within seven days of the term commencing.

THE TIMETABLE: Lessons are given during school hours on a rotating timetable so that a different school lesson is missed each week. By this system, a pupil rarely misses the same subject more than two or three times a term.

Noticeboard LAMDA timetables are posted on the notice board in the Music Department and it is the responsibility of pupils to check their timetables regularly. Requests for a change of lesson

must be made at least three days before-preferably more. It may not always be possible for the time of a lesson to be altered; in which case the teacher is not obliged to make up the lesson.

If the teacher misses a lesson, this will be made up at a later date. If a pupil misses a lesson (including through illness), the teacher in not obliged to make up the lesson.

REPORTS: Parents receive annual reports on their child’s progress: at the end of the Summer term.

NOTICE: Notice terminating lessons must be given half a term in advance in writing to head of drama. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a full terms fees being charged.

Lessons may only be terminated at the end of a term.

EXTERNAL ACTING EXAMINATIONS: Pupils can be entered for examinations (Associated Board of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) at the discretion of the acting teacher. Exam sessions will be held at Portland Place School throughout the course of the academic year.

APPLICATIONS: If you wish your child to have LAMDA lessons, please complete the applica-

tion form and return it to the School Office as soon as possible. PLEASE NOTE: APPLICATION FORMS CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE SCHOOLS WEBSITE. Applications are not normally acknowledged, but in due course the LAMDA coordinator Samantha Blackwell from Artisan Theatre School will contact you to let you know when the lessons will commence. When no vacancy is available, you will be informed that your child’s name has been put on a waiting list.

Trip to the Science Museum Last Friday 29th April, a group of PPS students enjoyed a fantastic day out at the Science Museum in South Kensington

Among those on the trip accompanied by Ms Zalesny, Ms Pieri, Ms Coates and Ms Florea were Sara Alebri, Catherine Argentieri, Ted Evans, Taishi Kikuchi, Susan Li, Mia Lipkin, Abdulelah Rajeh, Yasmin Magomedova, Zaya Child, Dexter Culpin, Spike Culpin, Flynn Forbes, Kotone Lewis Takeyama, Angelica Morby, Hazuki Kita, Georgie Fox, Kit Jones, Ned Harwood, Tec Hennebry, Max Coombe, Theo Hayward-Couch, Maxim Mydlar, Charlie Wilson, Luke Ahrens, Sam Osborn, Felix Osgerby, George Smither and Egor Pertsev.

Upon our arrival at the Science Museum, we stepped back through millennia in the exhibition Ancient Greeks: Science and Wisdom. We discovered how this ancient civilization questioned, contemplated, and debated the natural world. Also, we admired

objects and artworks brought together in the UK for the first time. It was obvious that ancient Greek thinkers strived to understand the world in a mathematical way.

Next, we watched “A Beautiful Planet”, a 3D movie in the IMAX cinema at the museum.

It was an awe-inspiring experience! As a breath-taking portrait of Earth from space, the movie provided a unique perspective and increased our understanding of the blue planet like never before.

We are extremely grateful that we had the opportunity to experience such a great day out together and enrich our general knowledge.

News Elite Members Club meeting leads to unrest !

A peaceful protest was held outside the now not so secret weekly meeting at Club Broccoli HQ this Thursday lunchtime.

Disgruntled members of Y6 organised a blockade of the 3rd floor staircase and put their iPads to good use to express their discontent.

In light of this protest, Club Broccoli executive founders, Madeleine and Angelica, who were not available for interview (as they were consuming lollipops) are to review membership policies to their highly elite lunchtime club.

Sports report U12 Cricket vs Radnor House

On Tuesday afternoon Portland’s Year 6&7’s travelled to Teddington Cricket Club to face Radnor in what was the first game of the season, and for some of the team, their first ever game of hard-ball cricket. Portland elected to field first and Henry Hurst and captain, Harrison Brudenell-Turpie opened the bowling. Henry conceded 21 runs in his three overs and Harrison 18, but neither were able to take a wicket, despite coming close. Spike Culpin managed to claim two wickets, catching and bowling the first and clean bowling his second victim. He finished 25 for 2. Dexter Culpin bowled 2 overs for 19 runs and no wickets. Tyson Douglas-Letts and Taishi Kikuchi bowled an over each and did well considering their lack of experience. They will make huge steps forward this year and look to be promising players. Enzo Pochon also bowled a steady two overs, achieving a good line. He conceded 13 runs and helped slow the run-rate in the closing overs. Radnor finished 114 for 2.

Henry and Harrison opened the batting as well as the bowling. Henry hit his own stumps trying to sweep the opening delivery of the innings but was given not out to a no-ball. He went on to score 16 before being given out LBW. Harrison was retired unbeaten on 39 after some excellent stroke play.

He was the pick of Portland’s batters, but Taishi also produced an excellent effort in his first ever cricket match, making an unbeaten 11. Tyler Dinh and Dexter both added a single run to PPS’s tally before losing their wickets. Portland eventually made 108 for 7.

This was principally an opportunity for PPS’s youngest students to gain experience of hard ball cricket matches. With some strong players missing and many pupils only just starting to play cricket, there is sure to be very significant improvement in the team’s performance this term.

Sports report U12 Netball vs Abercorn

It was a fantastic performance by the Year 7 team who were able to beat Abercorn, 9-2 on a chilly Tuesday afternoon.

After a long weekend, with the bank holiday knocking a day off school, the year 7 girls were able to push back the tiredness of the day to bring out a brilliant performance against a new opponent.

Straight from the start it seemed that the students were here to play. Jazz Pochon, playing Centre, started to control the pace of play, with Mia Lipkin and Bibi Underhill holding the fort in defence.

With Abercorn being a new opponent for Portland Place it was great to see that the students were not going to hold back.

After holding out in defence there was some brilliant movement and passing by Jazz, Avalon Smith and Abi Taub that saw Rhiya Haidar take up the first shot of the game. Although it was missed it allowed Maya Lachheb to gain the rebound and score the first points of the game.

Sports report The score allowed the squad to relax more and this was shown by the pace that the PPS students were playing. With Jazz controlling the centre and lots of movement by Avalon, Abi and Rhiya, PPS were able to go from defence to attack in a small number of passes.

The squad weren’t to have everything their own way with Abercorn forcing mistakes by the students,

but this was not to get into the minds of the Portland players who were able to rise above the Abercorn students to gain 3 more nets before the end of the first quarter.

With Yasmin Magomedova coming on just before the half it allowed some other players to move forward and show what they can do in different positions. For example, Mia was pushed forward into WD and this allowed her to show her defensive prowess, not allowing the opposition any time on the ball or being able to gain possession.

There was relentless pressure from the PPS students as they were not allowing Abercorn to break over their defensive third and the heat was felt as mistakes by the Abercorn students allowed Maya to score a couple more nets. It also saw Rhiya, Maya and Jazz, as the attacking trio, to move and shoot with ease, not all of which going through the net.

Throughout the match, it was fantastic to see the students working extremely hard together, communicating throughout the game and finishing with some big smiles on their faces.
