Last week we held our first Student Council meeting chaired by our Student

Leaders, Nicolas Bartha and Angel Ellis.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to have their voices heard. They will now look to implement change where possible throughout the school.

Next week during registration our Student Council members will speak with their year groups collating ideas for

future projects. So far we have had some interesting thoughts which we look forward to sharing with you after our next meeting.

News Year 10 GCSE Fine Art Primary Observational Studies Year 10 Fine Art students made beautiful observational studies from mushrooms this week, in continued response to their investigations into natural forms.

This is progressing from their Epping Forest field trip last fortnight, where they observed trees, plants and fungus to help provide inspiration for their personal portfolios.

The level of focus was palpable, and the quality of outcomes speak for themselves. Well done 10A!

News English as an Additional Language This week is about our lovely student, Miyu Aikawa (Year 10), who is sadly leaving Portland Place and

returning to Japan next week. Thank you, Miyu, for your impeccable work ethic, love for learning and creativity. I will miss you a lot and you will also be greatly missed in the wider school community.

Mia Lipkin

News Mia won two gold awards at a regional modern dance competition in Surrey last Saturday.

The event was part of a national series of competitions DESTINATION DANCE (https://www.destinationdanceuk.com/). It took place over 2 full days and included over 400 performances (single, duo and small group dances) by hundreds of children.

Mia competed in the solo and duo categories in ‘Age 13 and under’ category representing Extreme Dance School and won gold medals in both! She put in a lot of hard work running up to the event and we are very proud of this result.

Mia will now proceed to participate in a national Destination Dance competition next year.

PPS ENTERPRISE Last week was incredibly successful for us, we sold all the candles! This week: sweets.

The Enterprise group decided that because we had excess packaging, and didn’t want to waste anything, we would bring some joy into school and sell candies! We understand the stress everyone is under at the moment, especially the week before mocks, so some sugar will help!

Now, from our Enterprise members, why did they join?..

Well done to Ariella for her beautifully constructed Elizabethan ruff!

Murong: I really enjoyed Young Enterprise Ms Bertaux-Strenna because I learnt how to run a business in real life.

Irene: it was so much fun, from candles to candies, it was a true learning experience.

Oscar: I came into this enrichment with a very negative mindset, but this has really inspired me in many ways. I’ve learnt so much about how to run a business and to make a profit!

Sports report Junior House Netball

After the success of the first house event of the season it was time for the Seymour Centre to see the skills of Year 6, 7 & 8, who blessed the court for House netball. With some of the students new to the school, it was great to see the interaction between them and the older years who came out of lessons to lead the different houses.

After a warm-up it was time for the first 7-minute game to start with Devonshire taking on Langham. If we thought that the fitness challenge was going to be the most competitive event of the year it was good to see the Houses bring their A game with Devonshire taking the first win of the tournament. It was the leadership of Georgie Cox that led the young and inexperienced squad to a 2-0 victory. Special mentions

must go to Langham who continued to try all the way through the match, but it was some decisive shooting by Daniil Vasilyev that saw Devonshire come away with the victory The second game continued in the same exciting vein. Cavendish pulled out a great win against Wigmore.

It wasn’t without trying from Avi Winch who defended extremely well with Mia Lipkin and Kadi Bahbahani but it was a brace from Olivia Solomou and a single goal by Abigail Taub that saw Wigmore slump to defeat. After coming away with victories, it was the two top teams, Devonshire and Cavendish who took to the court next. This game didn’t disappoint either. After a good couple of wins beforehand, there was going to be one team who came away with the victory but was it going to be red or yellow?

Shot after shot but miss after miss saw the score stay at 0-0 throughout the game. It was a very tight game with some great passing by Bibi Underhill and Zaya Child but there was no way to unlock the gates.

It was time for the penultimate match with the undefeated Devonshire taking on Wigmore who had only just held out for a draw. It was a very quick start by Devonshire, who with some slick passing saw two quick goals by Jazz and Daniil and it felt like Devonshire were about to break away with the victory, but this was not to happen. After seeing Devonshire create, space and several opportunities, Wigmore used their passing to cut the lead into a draw. It was end-to-end stuff with both

Sports report London Youth Games Cross Country Championships On Saturday 20th of November, four Portland Place pupils from years 7 and 8 represented Westminster Borough at the London Youth Games Cross Country Championship at Parliament Hill. The boys qualified for this race through their performances at the Westminster Borough Championships, held on the much flatter course at Regent’s Park.

In the U13 age group, which comprises year 7 and 8, Spike Culpin was Portland’s first finisher of the 2km course, placing 168th in a time of 9 mins, 43 seconds, just a single second ahead of his brother, Dexter Culpin, in 169th. Year 8’s Rafer Moge completed the course in 10 mins 8 seconds in 184th. In the U15 age group, Hazuki Kita ran the longer course of 3km in 15 mins 26 seconds to place 176th. Matthias Page Fagon was also selected but was not able to participate. This race will provide valuable experience to these boys and was a race of high quality, with all runners having placed highly in their borough championship in order to gain selection. Most of these boys were a year out of age group and will have the opportunity to train hard for next year’s event, a year older, but still in the same age group. A big well done to these boys, who should be proud to represent their school and borough in this championship.

Sports report PPS 7 v 0 Kensington Park School On Wednesday 17th November PPS u16’s took on Kensington Park School (KPS) in an action-packed game of football. PPS got off to an excellent start when Jake Cossey finished well from close range.

Later in the half Haidar Jebara slotted the ball into the far corner after an excellent through ball from Lloyd Day. The boys were playing some superb football in patches but were guilty of holding onto the ball for too long and KPS nearly caught PPS on the break when the ball was lost in midfield. Before half time PPS added a third through Lloyd Day to take a 3-0 lead into half time.

In the second half PPS improved, they started to pass the ball with more pace, and it wasn’t long before PPS added a 4th when Haidar Jebara cut in from the left wing and curled an effort into the bottom corner. Despite the score line KPS were still fighting hard to win possession, but whenever they had the ball, they had a tendency to play

long to their pacey striker, but he could not find a way past the brilliant Nicolas Bartha and Sid De Rosario. With 10 minutes remaining PPS turned the screw, upping the pressure and scoring another 3 goals! Bosco Buonaguidi scored a well taken low drive, Kai Ibrahim produced an outstanding solo effort where he took on a couple of players and rounded the onrushing KPS keeper! Lloyd Day finished off an excellent performance with a powerful strike from 18 yards!

The 7-0 score line was harsh on KPS, but PPS were clinical and relentless in the final third. The second half performance was particularly impressive. Jake Cossey was a commanding presence in central midfield. Sid De Rosario put in a very solid performance in defence and Kai Ibrahim was lively throughout. Man of the match goes to Lloyd Day who produced one of the top PPS assists of the season, scored 2 goals and was a constant threat with his driving runs!

Sports report U14 Football vs Thames Christian College

This was a closely fought and competitive match held at Falcon Park’s 3G astroturf pitch in Battersea.

Although Portland’s year 9’s dominated possession, clear chances were hard to come by. The opportunities PPS did create were thwarted time after time by some superb goalkeeping from the TCC goalie.

Miles Sellens-Flack had a superb game at right midfield and was through on goal a few times, but the keeper was off his line early on each occasion, smothering the ball. The best chance of the game came in the first half, when midfielder, Sonny Shelton, sprinted down the right flank to cross the ball at the by -line. Striker, Danny Maclean, controlled the ball superbly with his back to goal, just inside the 6-yard box, turned and volleyed the ball crisply into the right side of the goal. To everyone watching it seemed an inevitable goal, but the Thames keeper’s left hand darted out to tip the ball over - a really tremendous reaction save, from a move that deserved a goal. Late on, Miles produced some superbly skilful dribbling to create space for a low drive, tantalisingly wide of the far upright. The game finished 0-0,
