Thank you to everyone at Portland Place School for raising a fantastic £447.00 through your fundraising!

Children around the world have a chance to become who they want to be, thanks to our supporters like you. Harriet, 14, who was forced to flee South Sudan with her family, is just one of these children. When they reached Uganda, they were safe. But it wasn't easy for Harriet to go to school.

Harriet joined Save the Children's Accelerated Learning Programme in the refugee settlement where she lives. It supports children who have been out of education to catch up with the schooling they've missed.

Now she is back in mainstream school, her learning has really taken off, and she has been chosen as head girl by her classmates, something she is very proud of.

By joining us, you've helped children in the UK and around the world stay safe, healthy and keep learning, so they can reach their full potential. Thank you.

Ashbourne College's Scholarship Auditions are now open for applicants interested in taking either Drama or Music at A-Level.

Applicants will perform their audition on Wednesday 17th November in front of our Scholarship Panel.

Music Applicants will perform a 1-2 minute piece of Music of

Grade 5 standard or above.

Drama Applicants will perform a 1-2 minute monologue from an established dramatic text from the 20th century onwards.

Musicals and film scripts are not accepted.

Scholarships up to and including 100% are available!

Science:

Digestion with Year 8

News

The pestle and mortar represents digestion in the mouth mechanically breaking down the food. We added some salvia (water), salvia contains enzymes which help to break down the food.

The clear plastic bag represents the stomach which is a large muscular sac that contains hydrochloric acid (orange juice), it is able to churn the food, mixing it with the acid so that it can be broken down into even smaller molecules.

The food is then poured into the tights, this represents the small intestine inside the body. This is where the nutrients from the food we have eaten

is absorbed.

The small intestine is well adapted for digestion: it has thin walls, making it easy for food molecules to pass through into the blood stream.

The last stage of digestion involves the large intestine that absorbs water and any remaining nutrients from the small intestine. Once this has been done the waste products are then excreted from the body as faeces.

Sports report U18 Football vs Thames Christian College After suffering a heart-breaking defeat in their previous game, the Under 13’s managed to gain a great 3-0 win against Thames Christian College. From the first whistle, it was clear that the Portland Place

students were here to play football, opening up the defence with some slick passing from Jake Gadney and Dexter Culpin who controlled the centre of midfield. From defence to attack the students were in control and patient with their build up play, taking the advice of Mr Steward to spread the ball, Thames were struggling to gain any possession.

With Jake and Dexter controlling the middle of the field, it allowed the attackers, Tyson Douglas-Letts,

Spike Culpin, Humphrey Boland and captain, Danny Maclean to break through on the weak defence and put some brilliant shots on goal. The first half was ticking by and the gates were yet to be opened by PPS but with some close shots coming on and a corner that saw Tecumseh Hennebry skim the crossbar, it was inevitable that goals were going to come sooner rather than later and with that the strikers were unleashed. After slipping and making a little mistake Hazuki Kita was able to clear the ball up the pitch which saw Danny run on to it and with his right foot curl the ball into the top corner. The goal saw PPS start to move the ball around even more, playing from side to side, back to front with relative ease, pushing the defence further and further back and with this saw crosses coming in from each side. One of which, crossed by Rafer Moge saw Spike come inches from scoring his first goal for the U13’s.

Sports report A second goal was imminent and it came moments before

half time when Jake scythed open the Thames team, taking on 5 or 6 players before striking the ball towards goal only for the shot to rebound off the post into an oncoming Tyson who smashed the ball into the back of the net.

It wasn’t just the attack who were running the game but the defence with Matthias Fagon Page having a fantastic game, running up and down the right side, swinging balls into the box and sprinting back to make sure that the team kept a clean sheet. The game started to open up in the

second half with Thames Christian College coming out to score goals, but they were unable to worry Max Coombe who had a very comfortable game in the PPS goal. But the end was near with Ned Harwood using his silky skills to open up the defence and the passing continued to worry the midfield. It worried them enough that Humphrey was able to find some clear space and wrapped his right foot round the ball to slip a third past the scrambling keeper.

There could have been more goals if it wasn’t for some

fantastic saves by the Thames keeper but all in all it was a good day at the office for the PPS students.

Dexter stated: “After a few close calls it was great to get the big W. We played really well and pushed their defence. We were unlucky to not get more but we are happy to come home with the win.”

Sports report U12 Football vs Kew House On Tuesday 4th November PPS U12s took on Kew House school In a highly entertaining and fast paced

game of football. PPS started the game well and spent the first 10 minutes camped in Kew's half trying to carve out chances. The boys were playing some very direct football and it was working. They had a few good efforts on goal and got the ball into some dangerous areas but unfortunately could not find the back of the net. Kew managed to weather the PPS storm and started to see a bit more of the ball.

There were a number of closely fought individual battles across the pitch and the game had an excellent pace to it. Unfortunately, it was Kew who took the lead with a well taken finish. PPS showed great commitment off the ball but on the ball, they just could not string together their usual passing patterns and were guilty of losing the ball too easily. Before half time Kew added a second, making it 2 -0 to Kew House at half time.

Sports report The boys started the second half well and were extremely unlucky not to score early on with Enzo Pochon curling an effort against the bottom of the post. The boys continued to push to get back into the game and hit the woodwork a second time with Humphrey Boland striking the cross bar with a longrange effort. Kew looked dangerous on the break, but goalkeeper Harrison Brudenell-Turpie was alert

and came out and smothered the ball really well on a couple of occasions where the Kew strikers were played through. PPS kept fighting to get back in the game, but it just didn't feel like their day with a number of passes being intercepted. Tyson Douglas-Letts Was extremely unlucky not to score when played through behind the defence. His powerful effort looked destined for the back of the net but the Kew keeper pulled off an outstanding save. Kew were awarded a penalty towards the end of the first half but Harrison managed to save with his feet much to the jubilation of his team mates. Unfortunately, PPS just couldn't create anything in the last 5 minutes and it was Kew who added a third with the final kick of the game.

The score line felt harsh on the boys and things could have been very different had PPS scored in their early period of dominance or found the back of the net rather than the woodwork in the second half!

The boys will need to improve the accuracy and pace of their passing next game. Tyson worked hard up front, he was a constant nuisance when pressing the Kew defence and was unlucky not to score. Taishi Kikuchi was excellent at left back, putting in his best performance in a PPS shirt to date. Man of the match goes to Harrison who made a number of excellent saves, showed improved drop kicking and saved a penalty! Unlucky boys.

Sports report U15 Football vs Kew House: Kew 5, PPS 5 On Thursday afternoon Portland’s U15’s travelled away to Kew House for a match which was, to coin a much-used footballing cliche, very much a game of two halves. A few key squad members were missing

due to show rehearsals which provided an excellent opportunity for some new players to make their mark. Raphy Li and Oscar Brett made their A team debuts, as did Harry Powers, in goal. Raiyan Izad also came into the squad at right back, producing a solid performance.

Initially, Kew fielded an under-strength team, having got the better of the three previous Portland sides they’d faced earlier in the week. However, it was immediately apparent that PPS were too strong. Captain Jessy Fryer-Jacobs gave Portland the lead in the opening minute and headed home a second shortly after. He completed his first half hatrick within ten minutes, after which Kai Ibrahim, at left midfield, got in on the act. His first goal was a nicely curled low shot with his right foot after cutting inside from the left. He then bagged a second soon after. Kew managed to hit back on the break to claim a goal, making it

1-5 at halftime.

In the second half Kew made several substitutions and it was obvious from the outset that we were now facing their full A team. PPS started brightly, creating some good chances, but were denied each time by some excellent keeping. Ten minutes in and Kew began to really dominate play, moving the cit to just one, before making another round of substitutions with about fifteen minutes remaining. Portland got back into the game and looked as though they would add to their tally but couldn’t seem to create a clear-cut chance. In the dying seconds, with literally the last kick of the game, a Kew midfielder hit an unstoppable 25-yard scorcher into the top right corner to level the game 5-5.

Portland played well throughout, showing great energy and tackling strongly. Miles Sellens-Flack deserves a special mention, along with Ethan Smither, for their fine performances, playing up a year. Tom Hallam was outstanding in the centre, as usual, and Leo Newberry used his pace to great effect in defence. Well done to all who played.

Sports report 16 Football vs Kew House On Wednesday 3rd November PPS u16s made their way to Chiswick to take on Kew House School. From kick off it was clear the boys were in for a tough game, Kew dominated possession in the early stages, but

Whilst Kew had the majority of possession PPS looked dangerous on the break with Edwin Hounkanli and Kai Ibrahim looking particularly lively with their direct driving runs and Haidar Jebara was causing Kew all sorts of problems with his pace and trickery upfront, drawing a number of fouls. Midway through the first half Kew took the lead after PPS failed to clear from a cross and the ball was bundled over the goal line. 5 minutes later they added a second, much to the frustration of the boys who had just had their best period of possession of the ball. PPS fought back and Haidar Jebara got PPS back in the game, with a superb solo effort he drove at the heart of the defence, nutmegged a centre back and placed the ball in the bottom corner. A few minutes later PPS should have equalised after an effort from just 2 yards out was shanked over the bar, it was harder to miss than score! The score remained 2-1 to Kew at half time.
