News Dyslexia as a gift As we are celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Week, Hazuki Kita (Year 8) has researched and produced a beautiful piece of writing about one of the world’s greatest chefs, Jamie Oliver. He has dyslexia and has built a successful career over the years because he knew he worked well with his hands.

When Jamie Oliver was young, he was stigmatised and teased because of his dyslexia. He could not finish reading a book until he was 38. The problem was that reading was very difficult for him and he got bored easily.

Despite not being an academic success, Jamie Oliver went on to open restaurants around the world and to release many best-selling cookery books. He says that his dyslexia is a gift in the job as he never struggled with recipes: " My brain works in a different way, and I often imagine how the food tastes. I put concepts together in my head. Also, I can 85% smell it and almost taste it."

The chef calls those with dyslexia “lucky” and the long list of famous people with the condition proves his point.

Sports report Portland Place U16 B vs North Bridge Canonbury U16 B

This was the second part of a double header match up with fellow Regent’s Park users, North Bridge Canonbury. The U16 B team played on a mini pitch in a 7 a-side format with 25-minute halves. PPS’s 12-man squad was switched-up throughout the game and everybody got a chance to play, some in more than one position. Roberto Hinton provided the foundation to this convincing victory, keeping possession well and dominating the midfield. He passed the ball well off both feet and created numerous chances for Kai Ibrahim, playing up front, to put away. Kai scored 4 goals! He performed very well on the right, as did Raphy Li who passed well and caused many problems for North Bridge’s defence.

In a game that saw Portland scrapping for the ball and hassling North Bridge’s players, no one was more physical than Felix Lake, who closed down quickly and

seemed to come off best in every tackle.

Arthur Hales looked composed at the back, passing to feet with great control and showing just how much he has improved as a player over the last few years.

Well done to all who took part in this tremendous 6-0 victory. It was very much a team effort and a well-deserved win.

Sports report Thames Christian College U15 Netball vs Portland Place School

Having arrived at Battersea Sports Centre on Thursday afternoon both teams started explosively, and

this fast pace did not slow down. The girls were really up for the game and they passed the ball around the court seamlessly, successfully intercepting passes to get the ball to the goal area and take an early lead. They began positively and just got better throughout the game as their confidence grew.

Violet Brodie and Grace Bradshaw were on fire in goal and could not stop scoring. This was an absolute delight to see. The rest of the team worked hard across the court throughout the game, playing both defensively and on the attack. Lexi Horne, Jemima Hyam, Anastasia Dillon Demosthenous, Alex James and Miyu Aikawa were all fantastic in their defensive positions and Lana Tuite and Isabella Trautman made some tremendous interceptions in their attacking positions. I was extremely proud of the squad and hope they continue to develop their skills to further improve their performance in

their next game and come away with another great result.

The final score was 4 – 24 which was an exceptional win for the girls. Well done to all those involved and for their continued hard work!

Sports report Westminster Borough Cross Country Championships

Portland’s Y7,8 & 9 boys: Hazuki Kita, Rafer Moge, Dexter Culpin, Matthias Page Fagon and Spike Culpin

On Friday 1st October Portland’s cross country team travelled the short distance to Regent’s Park

to contest this annual championship. In the morning the KS2 students raced it out in light rain, though the heavier stuff had passed through earlier that morning, leaving the course wet, but not too muddy. Enzo Pochon and Jude Page Fagon took part in the Y5&6 race and performed admirably. It is very early in the season for cross country racing, most of which happens after Christmas and our pupils will not take part in this during lesson time until the Spring Term, when most of the key races take part. Jude finished 20th, in a field of some 70 runners, completing the 1.5km course in 7:08.4 sec. Enzo came in 33rd in 8:02.7. Well done to both!

The secondary school races all happened in the afternoon, with blue skies emerging, but the

course deteriorating. In the Y7,8 & 9 girls’ race Sasha Cerna placed 23rd in a field of 60 runners. This course was 3km in length and she finished in 14:16.7. Isabella Calvert-Bull placed 33rd in 15:28.4 and Azure Smith took 51st in 17:44.8. Jazz Pochon didn’t complete the course but put in a good effort and will have learned a lot from the experience.

Sports report In the boys race Portland made a very strong showing with all 5 of our runners finishing in the top 9. Year 7 runner Spike Culpin won our only medal of the day, taking 3rd in 12:52.8. Just behind him was his twin brother Dexter Culpin who placed 4th in 12:58.5. In 6th was Year 8 athlete Rafer Moge, who finished strongly, making up ground on many runners. His time was 13:39.3. Fellow year 8 Hazuki Kita was 8th in 14:20.0 and Matthias Page Fagon was 9th in 14:55.2. This was a tremendous effort from our lower school boys, and with such a young squad it bodes very well for next year’s competition.

In the senior boys’ race Tom Hallam was our bestplaced runner, coming a creditable 5th over the 4km course in a time of 19:30.8. Rudy Bigoni pushed himself to the limit, which was evident by the state he was in as he crossed the line. He ran very bravely and should be proud of his 6th place in a time of 19:45.6. In 9th was Ryder Nayak in 21:22.6. He paced himself well and would have preferred more time to prepare for this race, as would many of the runners. All three of these boys are in the lower half of this age group and will have the opportunity to improve on these results next year.

A huge well done must go to all our athletes! They all gave great effort and produced some very pleasing results.
