Portland Parks & Recreation

City Budget Update

by Jennifer Yocom, Community Relations Manager, Portland Parks & Recreation As you may know, the City of Portland is facing a $25 million deficit for fiscal year 2013-14. Several factors have impacted this deficit including the Multnomah County Library District, the recent Department of Justice settlement, and budget notes from the FY 2012-13 Possible Adopted Budget. With that, 10% reduction the Mayor and City Council FY 2013-14 have asked all City bureaus, including Parks, to develop a budget based on 90% of their current budget (the Current Appropriation Level). That means Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) faces up to a 10% cut in programs and services.

While we don’t know what PP&R’s final budget will be at this point, it is possible that certain programs will be changed, reduced or eliminated, or fees will increase to help cover costs.

Follow the process at www.portlandoregon.gov/ parks/budget, and find out more about community budget forums where you can testify at www. portlandoregon.gov/cbo. The City’s final budget should be adopted in June and implemented on July 1, 2013, the first day of the new fiscal year.

Summer is our favorite time of the year! Until then we’ll be planning many fun activities as well as training the most energetic, lively and responsible camp counselors around!

To support families who need an earlier drop-off or later pick-up time, we provide Before & After Camp Care for camp & Kid’s Day Off participants. Parents/guardians must drop off and pick up children for Before & After Camp Care in person inside the Center. Coupons are $2.50 each and are non-refundable. One coupon is good for 5 to 30 minutes. 2’s camp not eligible for before & after care.

In addition to the physical space being Eco-Healthy, instructors lead by example and teach students the importance of reducing, reusing, repurposing & recycling. SWCC Gymnastics Academy Level I: This class is an introduction to gymnastics, teaching proper techniques and increasing student’s comfort level trying rolls, cartwheels, handstands, bars, vault & beam. We learn very basic movements emphasizing body awareness, strength, balance and coordination.

Level II: A Level II participant should be able to complete a forward roll, do a cartwheel moderately, skin-the-cat bringing legs through and drop on the bar, hold handstand with belly against the wall, walk on tip-toe across the beam.

Level III: participants should be able to do a cartwheel proficiently, skin-the-cat bringing legs through and back on the bar, walk the length of the beam on tip-toe forwards and backwards & hold a bridge position on hands properly.

Gymnastics - Preschool age: 4-6 Test your balance while learning skill development exercises involving jumping & landing, balances & poses, body awareness & flexibility & movement.

Your child will enjoy learning the basics in a fun, noncompetitive way. Build self-esteem & confidence, sharpen problem solving skills & increase your motor & coordination skills. No class 5/27.

PAC (Portland Aquatic Club): Mon-Fri 4pm-5:30pm LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE: “Circle Swimming” is necessary when more than two people are in a lane. Lane lines divide lap lanes. Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway lap lanes may become crowded, at these times “circle swimming” is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmer’s speed: slow, medium, and fast. Look at the yellow markers at the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane.

Aquaerobics: Energize youself with this invigorating workout! This shallow water class focuses on cardiovascular fitness with special attention to strength and flexibility. All fitness and swimming levels are welcome!

Aquapower: Experience the difference in deep water, using buoyant and resistant equipment for an excellent cardiovascular workout with zero impact! Aquapower is designed for all levels. Participants should be comfortable in deep water.

S.M.I.L.E.: (Slower Movement Intensity Lowered Exercise) – This shallow water class focuses on improving circulation, strength, range of motion, and flexibility through low-impact exercise.

Pregnancy Fitness: A gentle paced aerobic activity with strength and stretching exercises – all utilizing the freedom and support of the water. Pregnant or postpartum participants join any class. The specific pregnancy fitness classes are designed so participants may enjoy the camaraderie of others experiencing the same growth and labors of pregnancy.

Portland Parks & Recreation Scholarship/Financial Assistance Financial assistance and fee reduction is available to those residents of the City of Portland that apply for assistance and meet standard eligibility requirements.

The Scholarship Assistance Application will be available at the Center, and will also be distributed through social service providers. For more information, or to request an application, call 503-823-2840.

Parking Recommendations Please park in designated parking spots only. When in the parking lot, we encourage you to drive slowly.

Carpool, walk, bike or take Tri-Met to the Center. In the evenings after 5pm and on weekends, you can park in the Vermont Hills Shopping Center parking lot located at the south corner of SW 45th Ave. and Vermont.

Locker Rooms & Lockers/Lock Rentals Use of photo cellular phones is prohibited in locker rooms and restrooms.

Lockers will be available for daily use only at no additional fee.

It is requested that all children age 6 and older use the locker rooms of their own gender. Four family changing rooms are available by the swimming pool.

Combination and Key locks are available for purchase at the Front Desk. Locks are available to rent for a 50 cent fee and a piece of ID to be held as collateral. Use of lockers is at your own risk, the Center accepts NO responsibility for lost or stolen items. Please leave valuables at home.

Child Care Program Quality Child Care is available for birth to 8 years of age, to accommodate parents attending classes, swimming or working out in our fitness areas. Children accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

FEE: Childcare costs are determined by the age of the child for each ½ hour or any portion thereof. Two-hour maximum.

Children ages 0 – 18 months: $2.75 per ½ hour Children 19 months – 8 years: $2.25 per ½ hour Child Care coupons (equal to ½ hour care) are available individually and as a 20-punch pass.

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a NR fee. NR fees do not apply to drop-in activities.

Non-residents who wish to register for PP&R activities may choose one of these options: • pay the additional 30% non-resident fee.

PHONE. Call our Customer Service Center at 503-823-2525, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm. Visa or Mastercard are accepted by phone. You are welcome to call any of our community centers to register over the phone as well.

MAIL. Mail in your completed registration form (at right) to: Parks Customer Service Center, 1120 SW Fifth Ave, Suite 1302, Portland, OR, 97204.

Include full payment using your Visa, Mastercard or check payable to the City of Portland.

FAX. Fax to 503-823-2515. Complete the registration form (at right) and fax it to us with full payment using your Visa or Mastercard. Fax is accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week but is processed during regular business hours.

IN PERSON. Any PP&R facility is able to process your registration, including the Customer Service Center, which is located on the first floor of the Portland Building at 1120 SW 5th Ave. See the map of our facilities within this catalog.
