Literary Arts Take Off at Multnomah Arts Center

If you’re reading this, chances Why write? Just consider some reasons, both serious and silly, that Rob are you can write, right?

But if I were to ask you to write a story—whether a piece of fiction or memoir—you might say no in so many ways. “I don’t do that.” “I don’t think like that.” Or, “There are enough stories out there already.” True, there are many stories out there already. But the stories that I’m talking about are the stories that help people live, understand, and discover who they are in a deep way.

Those are a little harder to come by.

Our literary arts classes teach all levels of students the art of telling stories well—we know that EVERYONE has stories, and often stories that they don’t know they have. The act of translating a story you tell aloud to a written story involves both sweat and a set of other eyes to look over your writing.

At the end of each term, there is a public reading where students in the program have an opportunity to share their work aloud. This is always a blast and a wonderful way to celebrate everyone’s hard work. Last winter, we had 25 students sign up to read!

hree trails, three bridges and one boardwalk are new features in Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) Marquam Nature Park and are now open for use. The new 1.4 miles of trail have been designed to responsibly expand hiking options and provide an internal loop trail within the park while preserving the habitat and improving water quality by protecting streams and addressing erosion. The new trail system will also provide key pedestrian connections between the surrounding neighborhoods, OHSU, and the Terwilliger Parkway and eliminate a network of unsafe demand trails that damage habitat and water quality.

Pittock Mansion Turns 100 in 2014

O

ne hundred years ago, in the summer of 1914, Henry and Georgiana Pittock moved into their newly completed mansion atop what was then called Imperial Heights with nine family members. There was nothing else like it in Portland, then or now. Built in the style of a French Renaissance chateau with panoramic views of the city’s skyline, mountains, rivers, and forests, the house contained 46 rooms (including sleeping porches) and a grand stairway hall that resembled those in European palaces. On the 46-acre estate also stood a Gate Lodge, a three-car garage with gas pump, green houses, and tennis courts.

In addition to its elaborate architecture, the mansion was filled with 1914 inventions including one of the first residential elevators in Oregon. The central heating system was zoned to allow different heating in separate parts of the house. Each bathroom had a shower (during an era when people were happy to have an indoor bathing tub), and the shower in Henry’s bathroom was, and still is, a hydraulic masterpiece that sprays from multiple directions. In addition to electricity, the house had back-up gas lighting. A modern kitchen contained a refrigeration room with a freezer.

Intercoms connected the rooms. And to make cleaning easier, there was a central vacuum system.

A dream house, and yet Henry and Georgiana Pittock lived in it for only four years — one less than it took to design and build. Family continued

to occupy the house after the Pittocks’ deaths, however. Two daughters, Kate and Lucy, along with their husbands, had also moved into the house in 1914. Lucy had two daughters, and a son was born in the mansion in 1914. In addition, two orphaned nieces were among the original occupants.

An extraordinary businessman Henry Pittock was able to afford a mansion because of a lifetime of hard work and a strong business sense. In 1853, at age 19, he left his parents’ home in Pennsylvania and followed the Oregon Trail to Portland. He arrived “barefooted and without a cent,” but within six years he was the sole owner of The Oregonian newspaper. He worked hard and during his lifetime founded the paper industry in the Northwest, developed land in the area, operated a

bank, and was invested in everything from sheep farming to railroads to mining. A lifelong hiker, he was also the first (with four others) to make the documented ascent to the top of Mt. Hood in 1857, and he was a cofounder of the Mazamas, a mountaineering

Members of the Pittock family occupied the mansion until the end of 1958, when it was put up for sale. There were no buyers, however, and the house remained largely unoccupied for nearly six years. In 1962, it was damaged by what is remembered as the Columbus Day Storm. In 1964, the mansion was on the verge of being torn down when Portland citizens intervened to raise funds and save the property as a historical landmark. The city of Portland was able to purchase the home and estate for $225,000, and after fifteen months of renovations the mansion was opened to the public as a museum.

The Pittock offers daily guided and self-guided tours, as well as three seasonal special exhibits. Also, special architectural tours examine the meaning behind the design of the mansion, and “Behind-the-Scenes” tours take visitors on a trip back in time through the areas not ordinarily open to the public including underground hallways, the furnace room, and the servants’ quarters on the third floor.

Today, Pittock Mansion is a vibrant and inspiring place, visited by more than 70,000 each year. Pittock Mansion Society and Portland Parks & Recreation work together to maintain the historical site so visitors may explore the grounds, enjoy the scenery, and experience Portland’s transformation from a small “stumptown” to a bustling city.

Though Georgiana (Burton) Pittock was not a businesswoman, she made her own considerable contribution to early Portland as it grew from frontier town to major city. In 1852, she arrived here at age nine with her family from Iowa.

Eight years later, when not quite 16, she married Henry Pittock and together they had six children who survived to adulthood. Georgiana was known for her extensive philanthropic work, which provided aid and training to the elderly, young women, and boys and girls. In 1888, she also set up a tent in her yard on SW Washington St. and with her friends exhibited the roses they had grown. This first rose exhibition eventually led to the establishment of the Portland Rose Society.

education organization that is still thriving today. When Henry Pittock died in January 1919, his estate, which was worth $7.9 million at the time, was the largest ever settled in Oregon.

Meet SWCC’s Mr. Fun: Spencer Dale

I

n September 2012, I began working at Southwest Community Center as a Recreation Coordinator I. Soon after arriving, I met with MaryAnn Takashima SWCC’s Building Director to find out what my portfolio of responsibilities would include.

You see there is so much going on at SWCC that all of the programs and departments need to be split up to ensure they get the attention that will afford the best possible customer experience. We talked about each department’s goals, and the staff who worked in each. I was thrilled to discover that I was going to be in charge of the Rental Department, the Customer Service Department, and Youth Programs. Fun, Fun and more Fun! As most of you would assume SWCC has fantastic, caring staff, making this place truly special. When MaryAnn and I were chatting about each staff member in the Rental Department there was one staff person who caused Maryann to give a little different response. This person caused Maryann to read his name, pause, smile and simply say “You’re going to love having Spencer work for you — I’ll let you find out why.”

Now in my mind this could go either way. Was she being genuine and just wanted the full impact of first impression to be untainted? OR… Was she just smiling thinking about how hard I would have to work to right this “ship” known as Spencer Dale?

Fast forward two days when I held my first Rental Department meeting to introduce myself to the staff and get some input on how rentals work here.

In walks a young man with suspenders, unmatched argyle socks, a 50s briefcase and an old corduroy jacket….Spencer Dale, folks. Is it a hipster statement?

Or a functional style? This past year has answered all of those questions for me. The bottom line is Spencer is an entertainer at heart, and that’s what

makes him the greatest birthday party host SWCC has ever seen. (That’s my personal opinion anyway.)

Here are a few highlights from a rare interview with Spencer Dale. I hope you enjoy getting to know the one, the only…Spencer Dale.

Craig: “So first and foremost – Are you in fact a hipster?”

Spencer: “Short answer – maybe.

(Laughing) Although hipsters do have to pay money to look like this, I look like this for close to free.”

Craig: “So the suspenders were free?”

Spencer: “No but, the pants that were free were too big. I got them from my grandfather, he had immaculate style.”

Craig: “The fifties style suitcase….. why?”

Spencer: “Necessity, everything is out of necessity not style. I refuse to buy things at full price. It carries my juggling equipment, or anything that can keep me entertained. Water, snacks — the basics. If you want to have this much energy you better have some healthy snacks and lots of water.”

Craig: “What are your early memories of this place?”

Spencer: “I grew up in the

neighborhood and came here before the center was even built. I remember going to the slip and slide and having the staff joke around with all the kids. It was a lot of fun. Now I think it’s great that I can be that adult and spray kids in the face with water as they pass by on the slip and slide.” (That’s a joke by the way….. water never gets sprayed in their faces.)

Craig: “I assume you consider yourself an outgoing person?”

Spencer: “I am an Extra Extravert, except when I’m on the bus; I don’t even look up when I’m on the bus.”

Craig: “What are your favorite things about working here?”

Spencer: “I am expected and encouraged to have FUN! The longer I’ve been here the wider the variety of departments I work in, but the one constant is to have FUN! I get to talk to all the people who come here no matter what department I work in. With parties it’s obvious how I’m supposed to interact with the people who come in. At the front desk I get to use my creativity to be funny. I get to make jokes about the water in the pool being very wet today, or tell kids that we are out of cream corn when all they really want is some pop corn. Making people’s day just a little bit better and more entertaining is my favorite part.”

Tim Crail, policy advisor for Commissioner Amanda Fritz, attended our October 2013 meeting. Because some new money may become available for improvements in Portland parks, Tim invited SW Neighborhoods to name the southwest parks it would most want to see improved. Committee members first named the three parks with master plans that they would most like to see developed. In a tight vote, Spring Garden Park came in first, the Red Electric Trail second, and Dickinson Park & Woods third. For existing parks already developed, committee members chose April Hill, Then in May of 2013, an opportunity came DeWitt, the Eagle Point portion of to fund the 2010 plan—Metro awarded Terwilliger Parkway, and Woods Memorial

Two Parks Committee members have recently taken on extra duties on behalf of parks and natural areas in Portland.

Steve Mullinax from the Bridlemile neighborhood is on the Portland Parks & Recreation Budget Advisory Committee.

Fran Laird from the Collins View neighborhood is serving on the Project Advisory Committee for the River View Natural Area. The advisory committee is helping to create a management plan for the natural area. Not all neighborhood associations in southwest Portland have a representative to the committee. If you might like to represent your neighborhood association, attend one of our meetings (see below) and if still interested, talk to your neighborhood association president.

But the popularity of the park has caused damage to the natural area. The lack of designated paths for people has led to trampled plants; disturbed wildlife; and compacted soil, which accelerates runoff. Off-leash dogs contribute to the damage. The Friends of April Hill Park, a committee of the Maplewood Neighborhood Association, has for years organized work parties to remove invasive plants and plant native plants in the natural area. The Friends have also been involved in improvements to the developed area of the park, including a new play area and portable toilet. The Friends also worked closely with Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) to write the 2010 Habitat Management & Trail Plan for April Hill Park Natural Area. That 2010 plan defines improvements to restore the natural area but there has been no money in the PP&R budget to implement those improvements.

April Hill Park is a 9.79 acre park in the Maplewood neighborhood in southwest Portland. The city acquired the property in 1963. The north half of the park is developed with a play area, soccer field, and picnic benches. The south half is a natural area. Woods Creek, a tributary of Fanno Creek, runs roughly east to west through the natural area.

A perennial spring at the north end of the natural area feeds a 2-acre wetland connected to the creek.

The wetland is a home to chorus frogs, long-toed salamanders, and roughskinned newts. The creek is lined with western red cedars. Snags provide habitat for birds that nest in cavities.

Improvements coming to Washington Park

ashington Park is one of the crown jewels of Portland’s nationally-recognized park system. Located just minutes from downtown Portland, Washington Park welcomes more than three million visitors each year. No surprise, considering the park’s beautiful natural spaces and extensive trail network. The park is home to world class attractions such as the International Rose Test Garden, Portland Japanese Garden, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Oregon Zoo, World Forestry Center, and Portland Children’s Museum.

This success has led to a variety of transportation and parking challenges.

Park visitors have long recognized that deteriorating roads, pedestrian safety concerns and parking problems have made it difficult to access all of the great attractions in Washington Park.

After nearly two years of discussion and public process, City Council approved a plan to form the Washington Park Transportation Management Association (TMA) – a non-profit organization dedicated to helping solve these transportation and access issues.

The TMA is guided by a Board of Directors made up of key stakeholders from in and around Washington Park.

The board includes neighborhood leaders, directors from all of the Washington Park attractions, City leaders, and at-large citizens. The board and the TMA will work together to ensure that Washington Park remains a world-class destination with safe, convenient, efficient and sustainable access to all areas of the park.

New parking pay stations were activated in Washington Park on January 10, 2014, to help fund these much-needed and long-anticipated improvements.

In the peak season, from April to September, the parking charge is $6.40 for the entire day, or $1.60 per hour.

During winter months, from October to March, the hourly rate is the same, but the daily rate decreases to $4.00

per day. And every transaction gets 30 free minutes; so if you were to pay for 15 minutes, you’d get 45 minutes.

Importantly, 100% of the projected $2 million in annual revenue will be invested strictly in improvements in and around Washington Park.

What will be improved?

Visitors can expect better security through an expanded Park Ranger presence within Washington Park.

Rangers provide information and security services to park users.

Roadways, sidewalks, trails, crosswalks, and other transportation infrastructure

will also begin to be improved. One of the most exciting new features is a free park-wide shuttle to provide convenient access to park destinations.

What about more parking?

Portland Parks & Recreation will be developing a new Master Plan for Washington Park, which will include a robust public process. The plan will help develop transportation strategies, and determine if, where, and how new parking should be built in the park. No such changes will take place without extensive public input.

Increased socialization opportunities allow little ones to develop self-confidence & increased self-esteem. Care available in 30-minute increments, up to 2 hours maximum. Parent must remain on-site. Please bring a bag labeled with your child’s name that includes a set of clothes, diaper, wipes, & water bottle. Offered year-round. Sprout Academy is a certified Eco-Healthy school by the Oregon Environmental Council. Our classroom passed a 30-point checklist that evaluated the paint on the walls, the cleaning products we use, the educational materials on the shelves, and more demonstrating that the space meets the OEC’s requirements for certification. The Sprout Academy is a safe place for your child to learn & play. In addition to the physical space being Eco-Healthy, instructors lead by example and teach students the importance of reducing, reusing, repurposing & recycling. We are outdoors as much as possible taking the children through the park to learn how everything is connected and why the environment matters to each of us! We have our own community garden plot as a second classroom in warmer weather. Children learn simple concepts of sustainability and how we can each do our part. You might find your little Sprout teaching you, too!

Join us for this new afternoon activity as a supplement to preschool or kindergarten.

It’s like a mini After School program for early learners! Out of the classroom and into the great outdoors! With kindergarten just around the corner, enrich your child’s education with adventures in nature. Prepare your child for school life while incorporating fun with each new discovery!

The 2-hour class is geared towards being active in the outdoors and walking through Gabriel Park for most, if not all, of the class. We will be walking paths, hiking forest trails, spotting habitats, checking out little Vermont Creek, and exploring all of the natural areas right in SWCC’s backyard! Lesson plans may include found art crafts or stories to go along with the current theme, which will vary. Please bring a peanut-free snack, dress for the weather and wear comfortable outdoor shoes. Dates follow the Portland Public School/ Sprout Academy calendar. Sprout Academy enrollment is not required. Discount for MWF + T/Th registrations. Drop-off & Pick-up location: Fanno Creek room. PortlandParks.org. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity (online, check the box.)

3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member. At the end of the phone intake, it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

SWCC Gymnastics Academy Level I: This class is an introduction to gymnastics, teaching proper techniques and increasing student’s comfort level trying rolls, cartwheels, handstands, bars, vault & beam. We learn very basic movements emphasizing body awareness, strength, balance and coordination.

Level III: participants should be able to do a cartwheel proficiently, skin-the-cat bringing legs through and back on the bar, walk the length of the beam on tip-toe forwards and backwards & hold a bridge position on hands properly.

Discover the traditional Korean martial art of Taekwon-Do. Great lifelong aerobic exercise for the entire family. Emphasis on the 5 tenets of TaekwonDo: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, & indomitable spirit. Achieve your black belt goals!

Lead instructors: Master Cynthia Brown, 6th degree & Aaron Brown, 5th degree black belts. Class supported by additional Black belts allowing for small group instruction as well.

Class Structure: Warm-ups, hand techniques, forms, kicking drills, combination & non-contact sparring. Advanced students demonstrate strength through the breaking of woods boards.

Registration: New students are accepted throughout the month.

Tae Kwon Do - First Kicks age: 5-7 A beginning class in Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art similar to Karate. The class teaches self defense using kicks, blocks, punches, strikes both as an exercise program & as a means of self defense. PAC (Portland Aquatic Club): Mon-Fri 4pm-5:30pm LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE: “Circle Swimming” is necessary when more than two people are in a lane. Lane lines divide lap lanes. Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway lap lanes may become crowded, at these times “circle swimming” is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmer’s speed: slow, medium, and fast. Look at the yellow markers at the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane.

This shallow water class focuses on cardiovascular fitness with special attention to strength and flexibility. All fitness and swimming levels are welcome!

Aquapower: Experience the difference in deep water, using buoyant and resistant equipment for an excellent cardiovascular workout with zero impact! Aquapower is designed for all levels.

Participants should be comfortable in deep water.

S.M.I.L.E.: (Slower Movement Intensity Lowered Exercise) – This shallow water class focuses on improving circulation, strength, range of motion, and flexibility through low-impact exercise.

Pregnancy Fitness: A gentle paced aerobic activity with strength and stretching exercises – all utilizing the freedom and support of the water. Pregnant or postpartum participants join any class. The specific pregnancy fitness classes are designed so participants may enjoy the camaraderie of others experiencing the same growth and labors of pregnancy.

Aqua Superfit: YOU SET THE BAR! Take the next level with our newest ‘boot camp style’ water fitness class. This vigorous circuit training class allows you to challenge yourself to a higher fitness intensity. Swim lessons, specialized camps and classes are offered at a set fee – no additional admission fee will be charged when participating in these classes.

Parking Recommendations

Please park in designated parking spots only. When in the parking lot, we encourage you to drive slowly.

Carpool, walk, bike or take Tri-Met to the Center. In the evenings after 5pm and on weekends, you can park in the Vermont Hills Shopping Center parking lot located at the south corner of SW 45th Ave. and Vermont.

Locker Rooms & Lockers/Lock Rentals Use of photo cellular phones is prohibited in locker rooms and restrooms.

Combination and Key locks are available for purchase at the Front Desk. Locks are available to rent for a 50 cent fee and a piece of ID to be held as collateral. Use of lockers is at your own risk, the Center accepts NO responsibility for lost or stolen items. Please leave valuables at home.

Quality Child Care is available for birth to 8 years of age, to accommodate parents attending classes, swimming or working out in our fitness areas. Children accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

FEE: Childcare costs are determined by the age of the child for each ½ hour or any portion thereof. Two-hour maximum.

registration, unless otherwise arranged. If you have a nonresident pass, please let us know. Please call if you receive a returned check or declined bank card notice, either of which void registration.

Resident / Non-Resident definitions

A resident is: • anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the city limits of Portland. At the discretion of a Community Center Director, proof of home address may be required.

Acceptable address verification may include a 1) drivers license, 2) Oregon ID card, 3) property tax statement, 4) utility bill or lease agreement with current home address.

• any child living within the school boundaries of the Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is attending a SUN Community School. Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident fee.

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a NR fee. NR fees do not apply to drop-in activities.

Non-resident passes are not refundable. Passes are activated at the date of purchase and must be valid at the time of registration through the last day of class to be eligible for the resident fee.

Class Enrollment: Our classes must meet minimum

and maximum enrollment standards. Classes may fill quickly or be canceled due to low enrollment.

Withdrawal & Refunds: Please notify us at least five (5) business days (Monday-Friday), unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee.

Pre-paid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded.

Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made.

Inclement Weather: If the City of Portland public school districts (Portland Public, Parkrose, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Centennial) are closed because of weather conditions, PP&R classes and youth basketball in those school districts are cancelled. However, some sites may be open for drop-in activities. Call the specific PP&R facility for information and opening/closing times. If inclement weather is forecast on weekends or holidays, call the PP&R facility or program for operating hours and activity cancellations.
