SUMMERCAMPS Hey friends!

Who doesn’t like having a good time!?! Play is one of the most important aspects of my life, and I continually reflect on how fortunate I am to play all day long as the Camp Coordinator at Southwest Community Center. My job includes overseeing the logistics and daily operations of SWCC’s 17 summer camps for kids 2-14 years old, spread out in a 90 acre park (No big deal right?!?) SWCC is the perfect place for all of our kids! We have everything you could ask for in a location with Gabriel Park as our backyard. This includes an urban forest, community garden, soccer fields, baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, a skate park, multiple sports fields, and even a play structure! There’s a place for everyone in our camps program. We offer a diverse range of themes including general day camps, outdoor adventure camps, and specialty camps such as sports and gardening, The largest part of my job is making sure that ALL of our camps provide SAFE, FUN and MEMORY MAKING play for all campers to enjoy!

SWCC’s programs, fellow staff, and the community/kids I serve have been a family to me since day one.

During my time working as a Camp Coordinator, I’ve grown as a professional, as well as a human being.

With the school year winding down, my days are being filled with spending all my time focused on summer camps, and the awesome season we’re about to have! My excitement for watching our SWCC campers experience new things, make new friends, and PLAY • Over 70 field trips taken is shared with all of the SWCC Camp • Over 1000 snow cones made Counselor’s and staff.

SW Neighborhoods Parks and Community Centers Committee

By Leonard Gard, SWNI Program Manager Parks Committee work SPRING GARDEN PARK Spring Garden Park is a rectangular, 4.65-acre park in the Multnomah Neighborhood. It’s bounded by Spring Garden St and Dolph Ct at the north and south, and is between 32nd and 35th on the east and west. Years ago it was surplus school district property. The City of Portland acquired it in 1999 and for many years it has remained a grassy field.

It drops fairly sharply in elevation from south to north, and there are nice views at the south end to the north and east.

Good things have been happening in the last several years. In 2009, the Friends of Spring Garden Park formed as a committee of the Multnomah Neighborhood Association. They began holding events in the park, and in 2011 got a grant from Umpqua Bank for a small nature-play area at the south end of the park. Then in 2013, the Bureau of Environmental Services did restoration work in the northern end of the park—taking a stream out of a pipe and restoring it to the surface of the park

and planting the surrounding area with native plants. The biggest news came in 2014 when Commissioner Amanda Fritz announced that funding from system development charges would help pay for major improvements to the park, by implementing the Park’s Master Plan.

A project advisory committee was formed and PP&R staff went to work.

PP&R hosted three public “Community Gatherings” at the Multnomah Arts Center to present conceptual designs to the public. Construction is scheduled to start in August of 2016 and finish in the spring of 2017. For current information on this project, check this weblink: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/ parks/67420.

PARKS COMMITTEE WORK The committee has addressed a number of important issues in recent months.

A proposal by Under Armour, a sports apparel maker, offered funding for improvements to Duniway Park but triggered concerns about parking, lighting, and other issues. For the most current information about the Duniway

We thank all the people from PP&R who have attended our meetings.

Special thanks go to Terri Davis and Astrid Dragoy, both of whom have regularly attended our meetings for years. Most recently, Ross Swanson gave the committee an update on the Willamette Park Redevelopment Plan. Design development is done and work is now focusing on construction documents. The project goes out to bidding this fall.

The eastern edge of the new Willamette Park will be enhanced for bike commuters. The dog park (off-leash area) will be fenced off and have a granular clay surface for better drainage. It will include vegetated “islands.” The dog park will be about a half acre. A threefoot entry sign and wall will screen the dog park from Macadam. The Bureau of Environmental Services

There are two playgrounds now. One will be taken out.

The replacement playground is not yet funded. One of our committee members expressed her favor of natureplay equipment for the playground. Another member reported that South Portland NA wants a larger dog park.

Parking revenue also was discussed.

The committee is one of the standing committees of Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that serves seventeen neighborhood associations in southwest Portland. The committee meets every first Thursday of the month, usually at the Multnomah Arts Center. The public is always invited to attend. For more information, call Leonard at 503-8234592. PP&R is reorganizing its structure. Current divisions are Director’s Office, Park & Recreation Services, City Nature, and Planning, Development & Assets. New divisions are Support Services, Assets & Development, Recreation Services, Land Stewardship, and Urban Forestry. The biggest change might be the new Land Stewardship Division. The current structure distinguishes between natural areas, which are administered by City Nature, and developed parks, which are administered

by Park & Recreation Services. But there is not a clear distinction between natural areas and developed parks. Developed parks like Gabriel Park have natural components like forested areas and natural areas have developed components like trails. So the new structure will establish a new Land Stewardship Division that manages park lands and a new Recreation Services Division that focuses on recreation. The reorganization is taking place over time. It started in November of 2015. There will be outreach to stakeholder organizations. The plan will be incorporated into the bureau budget. Reorganization is scheduled to be completed by July 2016.

will re-establish oak tree habitat and understory along the Macadam edge of the park. The Water Bureau in the fall will build the east side trail. One of the primary big goals that came out of the 2012 Willamette Park Redevelopment Plan effort was to keep as much flexible open space as possible. Design details include monuments and walls. Gabion walls will be used (with steel frame boxes and mesh wire). Six entry monument markers will cost about $30,000. Six-foot high markers will establish the northern boundary of the park near the sailing club.

There will also be entry markers at the south boundary at the entry to SW Miles. Alternatives for caps on the monuments include glass and metal. The idea of a plaza entry at SW Miles shown in the 2012 planning process was dropped.

The Southwest Community Center Personal Trainers share their favorite moves for the Outdoor Training Zone to keep your workout fun and challenging.

GaiL:

The Outdoor Training Zone is a perfect place to stretch and work on flexibility. Generally all you will need is a mat and possibly a yoga strap. Here is a general stretching routine (avoid stretches that cause discomfort and ask the trainer on duty for assistance if needed): Knees to chest (lie on back, hold knees to chest), hamstring stretch lying on your back (use yoga strap if desired), child’s pose, hip flexor stretch (kneeling or standing, interlace hands in front of body and stretch arms up overhead with palms facing up). So why not take a few moments at the end of your workout to head outside, enjoy some fresh air and quiet, and relax with your favorite stretches?

Oblique Slam: Stand with knees bent and face wall a few feet out. Holding a medicine ball, swing arms back to one side twisting your torso.

Drive powerful energy through slam against wall. Catch ball at bounce. Repeat other side.

Variation: side stance 10 REPS. Turn 180. Repeat.

Wick:

Use our Training Ropes for a full-body strength, power, and cardio workout.

Alternating Wave: Start by facing the rope anchor point and holding the ropes waist level with palms facing in. Stabilize your stance with legs slightly bent, shoulder width apart, tighten your core, and begin lifting and slamming the ropes with alternating arms as fast as you can while keeping good form. You can lift and drop both arms at the same time for the Double Wave keeping ropes forward or bringing ropes down forcefully to the left side and right side alternately. To intensify the workout, you can move closer to the rope anchor point, deepen your squat position, or use jumping movements. The ropes can be used to add a cardio component to your strength-training program, add to your interval training, or as a full-body strength and conditioning workout. The versatility of the training ropes makes them a useful workout tool for beginners, athletes, and everyone in between!

CHRIS: The kettle bell swing is done with three basic positions. First start with your feet shoulder width apart and holding the kettlebell with both hands in a front shoulder raise position and make sure your chest is nice and high, so there isn’t any forward bend in the spine. Next, come down with your hips and knees flexing at the same rate as if you are in a down position for a deadlift making sure the knees stay behind the toes. The last move is done by exploding out of the down position through your heels, legs, hips, glutes, back, shoulders and arms making sure the arms are strain and the knees and hips extend at the same rate finishing with the arms at least at a 90 degree angle from the torso. This full body movement is great for correcting posture and for burning a lot of calories. Start with a light weight with high reps making sure to have control of the weight and a full range of motion.

John: The kettlebell shuttle will challenge your core and

upper body strength and should only be performed after a proper warm up. Begin by placing a kettle bell on the ground and getting into a high plank position (as if getting ready to perform a pushup).

The kettle bell should be to your side at about chest level. Next, while keeping your core engaged, and avoiding any rotation in the hips, reach across under your body with the opposite hand (in other words, if the bell is on your right, reach across with your left hand) grab the bell and shuttle it to your left, set it down, repeat by reaching under with your right hand to return it to its starting position. That’s one rep! Add 2-3 sets of 10 reps into your routine to really give your core a good workout. Want a little extra? Add a pushup between reps!

Pre-paid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded. Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made.

Summer camp costs can add up over the summer. Portland Parks & Recreation camp programs offer customizable payment plan options.

Contact the community center to set up a plan that is just right for you. Full payment must be complete a week prior to the start of camp.

BEFORE/AFTER CARE General day camps for preschool and youth age programs offer Before Care starting no later than 7:30am and After Care programs available until 6pm. Some locations require advanced registration and others offer daily drop-in rates. Contact the community center for details.

SPROUT ACADEMY at southwest community center EDUCATIONAL PRESCHOOL ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Sprout Academy was proudly introduced as Southwest Community Center’s educational preschool in the spring of 2009. At that time, we offered a pilot Pre-Kindergarten class with just 6 students to start. Today, we provide environmentallyfocused early childhood education for ages 2, 3 & 4 to more than 60 families! The Sprout Academy is offered exclusively at Southwest Community Center.

PHILOSOPHY

Our teaching philosophy is children learn through Play. Learning through play encourages children to build a strong social foundation for their future. A sustainable philosophy of education focused in both ecological and social consciousness coupled with learning through play engages children in interactions with the natural world in an open-ended way allowing their curiosity to take root and imagination take flight. With the magic AGE of our wonderful Gabriel Park onsite & the utility of (as of 9/1/16) our community garden plot, we strive to open young minds to independent thinking & creativity.

In spring of 2010, the Sprout Academy became certified Eco-Healthy by the Oregon Environmental Council. SWCC’s Director, the Preschool program manager, and teachers collaborated to pass a 30-point checklist and bring the classroom setting up to the OEC’s standards for an Eco-Healthy Child Care. From the paint on the walls, to the cleaning products we use, to the educational materials on the shelves, Sprout Academy is a safe place for your child to learn & play.

The Sprout Academy is held at please contact our Southwest Community Center Preschool Program Manager, in beautiful Gabriel Park. Our Shannon Scorgie at classroom is a warm, comfortable, 503-823-2848 or by email cheerful space with lots of natural at Shannon.Scorgie@ materials & lots of light. The space offers important safety features such PortlandOregon.gov as a child’s size bathroom toilet within the room and an adjacent gated courtyard. The courtyard is an alternative to ‘structured’ play; we have added loose elements from nature to foster creative, imaginative play.

The outdoor space also features Woolly Garden pockets for each class to tend as well as large natural planter boxes that the classes care for. Away from the center, the surrounding green-scape of Gabriel Park is the perfect setting for daily educational nature walks and seasonal outdoor lessons. We also have our very own Community Garden plot that has been a valuable resource as an outdoor classroom. Sprout’s 3’s & 4’s students visit & tend to their garden throughout the year.

IN PERSON – Any PP&R facility is able to process your registration, including the Customer Service Center located in the lobby of the Portland Building at 1120 SW Fifth Ave. All Community Centers are open for walk-in registration during business hours.

WITHDRAWAL & REFUNDS

Please notify us at least five (5) business days (Monday-Friday), unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee. Pre-paid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded. Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made.

SCHOLARSHIPS

City of Portland residents, regardless of age, who require financial assistance may apply for partial scholarships. Contact individual centers for information.

Summer camp costs can add up over the summer.

Portland Parks & Recreation camp programs offer customizable payment plan options. Contact the community center to set up a plan that is just right for you. Full payment must be complete a week prior to the start of camp.

BEFORE/AFTER CARE

General day camps for preschool and youth age programs offer Before Care starting no later than 7:30am and After Care programs available until 6pm. Some locations require advanced registration and others offer daily drop-in rates.

LAP SWIM (Lap Pool): We will make every attempt to have 1-2 lap lanes available, at all times, for adult lap swimmers. Up to 6 lap lanes will be available at designated times, call 503-823-2840 for a complete schedule of lap lanes available during operating hours.

PAC (Portland Aquatic Club): Mon-Fri 4:00-5:30pm LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE: “Circle Swimming” is necessary when more than two people are in a lane.

Lane lines divide lap lanes. Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway lap lanes may become crowded, at these times “circle swimming” is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmer’s speed: slow, medium, and fast. Look at the yellow markers at the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane.

Water Workouts Exercising in the water cushions the impact, reducing stress on the joints while supporting the muscles and promoting more efficient toning. Twelve times more resistant than air, water allows triple strength gains over land aerobics! In addition, heart rates are lower in the water, allowing for optimal fat burning and less fatigue.

Aquaerobics: Energize youself with this invigorating workout!

This shallow water class focuses on cardiovascular fitness with special attention to strength and flexibility. All fitness and swimming levels are welcome!

Aquapower: Experience the difference in deep water, using buoyant and resistant equipment for an excellent cardiovascular workout with zero impact! Aquapower is designed for all levels.

Participants should be comfortable in deep water.

S.M.I.L.E.: (Slower Movement Intensity Lowered Exercise) This shallow water class focuses on improving circulation, strength, range of motion, and flexibility through low-impact exercise.

Pregnancy Fitness: A gentle paced aerobic activity with strength and stretching exercises – all utilizing the freedom and support of the water. Pregnant or postpartum participants join any class. The specific pregnancy fitness classes are designed so participants may enjoy the camaraderie of others experiencing the same growth and labors of pregnancy.

This class works towards diving into the pool then swimming 50yrds, back crawl for 50yrds, elementary backstroke for 25yrds and breaststroke for 25yrds.

Park Shark 1&2

Must be comfortable in the deep water and be able to dive into the pool and swim front crawl for 50yrds, swim back crawl for 50yrds, and swim breaststroke for 50yrds. This class works towards swimming front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke all for 100yrds, swim side stroke for 50yrds, do a pike or tuck dive to 8ft, underwater swim for 20ft, surface and tread water for 5 minutes, long shallow dive and swim 100yrd individual medley, and compact jump and approach stroke 10yrds with rescue tube.

Dive into action with the Blue Makos!

Are you into speed, competition & perfecting your technique? Strut your stuff in this pre-competitive league, racing against other pools in Portland at quarterly mock-swim meets. Receive one hour per week coaching on butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, & freestyle including competitive dives & turns. Not for US Swimmers. Participants must be able to swim the length of the pool, front crawl and backstroke.

(This correlates to passing Sea Lion in the Portland Parks and Recreation swim lesson program.)

Saturday 11:30am-12:30pm 4/2-6/4 (no 5/28) Fee: $68 resident / $95.25 non-resident Private & Semi-Private Lessons All levels and skills taught. Staffing and scheduling dependent upon instructor availability. To schedule lessons, fill out a request form located in the Aquatics office. Requests will be filled on a first come first served basis, as space is available during regular lesson times.

PRIVATE LESSONS: One instructor to one student. $75/hr (resident) $105/hr (nonresident) 2.5 hour minimum for children and adults.

SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS: One instructor per two to three students. 10 lessons for $115 (resident) $161.00 (non-resident).

BEGINNER

CLASSES FOR EVERY AGE, SHAPE & SILVER STREAKS: Gentle exercise incorporating an active warm-up, chair and standing work, stretching and strengthening to promote flexible joints, stronger muscles, and healthier backs. Special rehabilitative exercises are included to enhance balance.

20-20-20: This is a contemporary, cutting-edge variable class format consisting of 20 min of non-impact aerobics, 20 min of strength training, and 20 min of functional and static stretching.

LOW IMPACT: A great workout for all, Low Impact aerobics will boost your energy level, burn calories, reduce stress, & get you in shape. No experience (or spandex) necessary!

HIP HOP: Smooth out your groove with easy to learn contemporary hip hop moves. A fun workout that will make an hour of total-body exercise fly by! All teens welcome.

THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE (BOOMER FITNESS): A brilliant mix of floor cardio, cardio-strength, muscular endurance, core training, yoga, Pilates, and balance work. Designed specifically for Baby Boomers!

ZUMBA GOLD: Specifically designed to take the exciting Latin and International dance rhythms created in the original Zumba and bring them to the active older adults, beginner participants and other special populations that may need modifications for success.

MIND/BODY

L.I.F.T. (Low Impact Functional Training): An easy to follow, fun, low-impact aerobic workout followed by strength, balance and core training. The class includes cardio respiratory intervals with strength based functional movement patterns to improve balance, agility and increase reaction time. A great way to get in shape and stay fit!

TAI CHI FOR HEALTH: This particular form has been shown to be helpful to participants with arthritis. Tai chi has also been shown to be effective in improving diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, fibromyalgia, and heart function. It consists of slow, gentle movements and includes warm-up exercises to improve balance and flexibility, and to strengthen core and legs.

PRENATAL YOGA: Connect your breath to relaxation in preparation for labor, delivery and parenting. Focus on hip opening and pelvic floor exercises.

GENTLE YOGA: Wrap up your busy week with this light, relaxing yoga experience! This class focuses on deep breathing techniques and soft muscle conditioning.

PILATES METHOD: Pilates exercises have long been renowned for producing long, lean physiques. Exercises focus on the body’s core muscles (abs and back) and are gentle in nature.

PILATES METHOD 2: The next step up from Pilates Method. Learn and practice intermediate level exercises.

YOGA: Enjoy a renewed sense of balance and calm in a mixed - level yoga session. Improve your health, tone your muscles and internal organs, and strengthen your bones. You don’t have to twist yourself into a pretzel to do yoga; yoga is for everyone!

POWER YOGA: Start your day in a powerful way with this challenging yet regenerative Astanga-Style yoga class.

GENTLE TAI CHI FOR BETTER BALANCE: Warm-up exercises and tai chi movements to strengthen legs, improve balance, and become more aware of stable postures BELLY DANCE: Get a great core workout, strengthen and tone your entire body while learning this graceful form of ethnic dance.

S.L.E.E.K. BARRE: S.L.E.E.K. (Supple,Lean,Elongated,Energized,Kinetic) Barre is a total body workout promoting toned and sculpted muscles, beautiful posture, core stability, alignment, balance, fluid movement, and vitality. Set to lovely classical music, incorporating the ballet barre, and combining various disciplines including dance, Pilates, and traditional strength/calisthenics exercises, this fun class will benefit people of every age and ability!

POWER BARRE: Add the benefits of barre exercise to total body strength training and what do you get? A complete workout that’s targeted to give you your best body ever! We will be combining the most effective movement sequences from dance, Pilates, body weight calisthenics and resistance training using weights, balls, and bands to promote thorough muscle balance, endurance, and strength. This remarkably adaptable exercise system suits all fitness levels!

DANCE, DANCE, DANCE!: 40-50 minutes of continuous movement done to music styles as diverse as Classic Rock, Mad Men standards, Hip Hop, Latin, Disco, Swing, African Rhythms and more!! Fun fast-paced choreography keeps your brain engaged as you leap, turn, twist and twirl your way into a sleeker physique!! Finish with strength and power moves and comprehensive core training!

INTER MEDIATE INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED

BURN ‘N’ FIRM: Get your sweat on in this fat burning, muscle firming workout! Cardio and weights strengthen the body inside and out.

CIRCUIT CITY: Box, pump, and Jam your way through different workout stations in this awesome circuit training class.

Drop in for however long you want your workout to last! you pick the duration! (kids age 9+ may participate with guardian from 6-7 am)

BODYBUFF: Tough, straightforward muscle work for lean muscle definition and better body confidence. Uses a variety of strength training devices and philosophies.

Hillside CC

TRIPLE THREAT: A jam packed class that challenges you in several ways. You will use a variety of equipment to build strength and cardiovascular stamina through both traditional and functional training methods. The workout will never be the same, so this class will keep you on your toes, keeping the mind and body equally engaged. A great way to finish off your day!

MORNING BLAST: This fast-paced, ever-changing mix of strength + cardio exercises keeps muscles guessing and minds from becoming bored. This class uses a variety of formats and equipment! Let this class be your first stop in your journey of daily accomplishments!

BOOT CAMP: Boot Camp offers you the benefits of a basic training cardio work, and Top Gun full body weight training!

Finish up with a world class abdominal session, and soothing head to toe stretch.

HEAVY METAL: This fun new format uses Kettlebells, a secret weapon of Olympic athletes to shape up from head to toe quickly!

BODY BLITZ: Nothing burns calories and gets you fit fast like interval training!! This class features alternating cardio bursts and super strength training intervals with a cool Pilates flavor, all focusing on the Step!!

This is the high intensity interval training you’ve heard about made safer and more effective through application of sound proven principles of exercise science.

Using wooden short swords, this dynamic workout choreographed to world rhythms will leave you with the sweat of total exhilaration. Come…jump, reach and twirl, experience the fitness fierceness that is The Warrior!

Our Daily Admission fee, Active Pass, 20-Visit Card, & 10-Visit Card provide access to all drop-in activities.

Swim lessons, specialized camps & classes are offered at a set fee – no additional admission fee will be charged when participating in these classes.

To accommodate guests who plan to visit Southwest Community Center frequently or who wish to bring in a larger group of visitors we offer 20 Visit Cards. These cards provide unlimited day-use of the facility & its drop-in programs at a discounted rate.

Daily Fee Our Daily Admission fee provides unlimited access, for the entire day, to all drop-in activities offered in the Center! Swim laps in the morning, enjoy a “Body Buff” aerobic class at noon & shoot hoops in the evening... all for the cost of one daily admission fee!

Scholarship/Financial Assistance Financial assistance and fee reduction is available to those residents of the City of Portland that apply for assistance and meet standard eligibility requirements.

The Scholarship Assistance Application will be available at the Center, and will also be distributed through social service providers. For more information, or to request an application, call 503-823-2840.

Parking Recommendations Please park in designated parking spots only. When in the parking lot, we encourage you to drive slowly.

Carpool, walk, bike or take Tri-Met to the Center. In the evenings after 5pm and on weekends, you can park in the Vermont Hills Shopping Center parking lot located at the south corner of SW 45th Ave. and Vermont.

Locker Rooms & Lockers/Lock Rentals Wilson Pool

Lockers will be available for daily use only at no additional fee.

It is requested that all children age 6 and older use the locker rooms of their own gender. Four family changing rooms are available by the swimming pool.

Use of photo cellular phones is prohibited in locker rooms and restrooms.

Child Care Program Quality Child Care is available for birth to 8 years of age, to accommodate parents attending classes, swimming or working out in our fitness areas. Children accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Directions to SWCC From the South: Take I-5 North to Terwilliger Blvd.

Turn LEFT onto Terwilliger Blvd at the the off-ramp light. You will cross over I-5. Turn LEFT on Barbur Blvd. Turn RIGHT on Bertha Blvd. Turn LEFT on Vermont St. Follow Vermont to 45th Ave. From the North: Take I-5 South to the Multnomah Blvd exit. Follow Multnomah Blvd for 1.5 miles. Turn RIGHT at 45th Ave. Follow 45th Ave to Vermont St.

FEE: Childcare costs are determined by the age of the child for each ½ hour or any portion thereof. Two-hour maximum.

Hillside CC

Combination and key locks are available for purchase at the Front Desk. Locks are available to rent for a 50 cent fee & a piece of ID to be held as collateral. Use of lockers is at your own risk, the Center accepts NO responsibility for lost or stolen items. Please leave valuables at home.

Children ages 0 – 18 months: $2.75 per ½ hour Children 19 months – 8 years: $2.25 per ½ hour Child Care coupons (equal to ½ hour care) are available individually and as a 20-punch pass.
