HOW TO REQUEST INCLUSION SERVICES • Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and register for that class.

• Contact Inclusion Services at 971-284-5060.

• If this is your first time requesting accommodations through Inclusion Services, you will need to complete either a phone intake or an Accommodation Form that can be sent over email. This process is to help determine what level of accommodation needed for the participant.

• Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

IMPORTANT DETAILS • A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same.

• Accommodations are made as needed and can be flexible, as well creative.

THE MEMORIES TRAIN Sarah Bobson

Sarah has been a writer for more than 40 years and a language arts teacher for 20 years.

Sarah has an M.A. in Psycholinguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University and has written hundreds of published articles for newspapers and magazines. For the last seven years, she has been writing a column on the 60s for The Independent in Livermore, CA. She recently relocated to Portland and is teaching language arts workshops at Oregon Episcopal School. We’re exciting for Sarah to offer her workshop, The Memories Train, through Senior Recreation.

SHAPING YOUR PATH and STORYTELLING

Emily Fitzgerald and Erica Thomas Erica and Emily are both practicing artists and creative consultants who met while earning MFAs from Portland State University’s Art and Social Practice program. As artists, they make collaborative work with other people, about where they come from and what’s important to them.

In addition to being artists, they consider themselves educators, producers, writers, photographers, and storytellers, among other things. This unwieldy path has led them to become pretty good at facilitating dialogue that helps people better understand themselves, and each other. Both have created or produced many projects for, and with, senior citizens. They hold a deep commitment to social justice, which informs their art and life. Though Erica and Emily love working together, Emily’s favorite collaborator was her grandmother.

Hike for Health and the Wilderness Hikes are transported in

15 passenger vans.

Primary Pick Up Location: 82nd and Siskiyou. Park facing 82nd. Meet 15 minutes prior to departure time. If indicated, certain hikes will have a second pickup location. Hikers meeting there must have a cell phone number on file and be available by phone the morning of the hike.

Secondary Pick Up Locations: When a secondary pickup location is scheduled (indicated by a bold "E", "S" or "W" in the hike description), participants should arrive at the location approximately 20 minutes after the primary pick up departure time. Van arrival times vary due to traffic conditions.

MILES/ELEVATION Miles are given for a round trip, except for loop or shuttle hikes, which are one-way. Elevation is cumulative elevation gain, adding all uphill portions.

PREREQUISITES The Senior Recreation hiking program offers 3 distinct and sequential levels. As individuals gain strength and endurance they may choose to qualify to longer and more difficult hikes. Hikers can do so either at the quarterly Hike for Health Qualifier or on a designated Metro Mover or Hike for Health hike. The free orientation is also required to all walkers and hikers new to the Senior Recreation program.

Hike Level 1 Metro Movers

Ability to walk a continuous 25-minute mile on uneven surfaces without shortness of breath. Please sign up for walks that you are confident you can complete.

Hike Level 2 Hike for Health

Must attend the Hike for Health Qualifier or a designated Metro Mover to be eligible for Hike for Health. Participants must notify the hike leader before attempting to qualify.

Hike Level 3 Wilderness Hikes

Must attend a designated Hike for Health qualifying hike to move on to Wilderness Hikes. Participants must notify hike leaders before attempting to qualify.

QUALIFIERS

Hike for Health Qualifier

Mt. Tabor Park parking lot Next to volcano crater and restrooms January 22 Tuesday, 10:00am-12:30pm #1101396 $6 Panoramic views of the city and Cascade Range, forested corridors, local rivers, native plants, and birds all combine for surprising rewards. Day-hiking is an ideal way to increase fitness levels while enjoying the natural beauty and history within the city and nearby. Walkers and hikers new to program are required to attend the free Walking and Hiking Orientation.

This is a 4 mile qualifying hike for those wanting to move on to Hike for Health. The majority of the hike is uphill and downhill with stair climbing and descending (100 steps) included. Paths are gravel and forest floor and the climb to the summit involves a 370-foot elevation gain. Please be prepared with hiking boots and gear as discussed in the Walking and Hiking Orientation. Internet users please print your confirmation for detailed directions to meeting location.

Get out and experience a winter wonderland of snow, scenery and fresh air in the Mt. Hood National Forest with a guided, group snowshoe excursion. Follow trails deep into the forest to discover snow-covered old growth trees.

Snowshoeing Mt. Hood – Introductory

We will trek for about 2 hours, with stops along the way. Dress warmly in layers and wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. Snowshoe and pole rental available for additional $15 fee. After the trek, warm up with lunch and camaraderie at a nearby restaurant.

Senior Recreation will send information out with more detailed suggestions about gear and clothing. Bring money for lunch.

Mt. Angel Abbey Insider Tour

Meet Benedictine monk Father Andrew as he gives our group a private tour of the beautiful grounds of Mt. Angel Abbey. Founded in 1882, the Abbey features an interesting mix of architectural styles, including the Romanesque church and the modern library, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. We will also visit the museum of natural history, which was created to aid the seminary's biology department. After the tour, there will be time to join the Liturgy of the Hours if you'd like or relax in the bookstore and coffee shop. We will have lunch in Mt. Angel and then make a stop at the newly created Benedictine Brewery, where the monks make and sell beer on tap and by the case. Their slogan is: "Taste and believe!" Bring money for lunch.

Museum of Mental Health, Salem

The Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health is located on the campus of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem. Electroshock therapy, eugenics, and lobotomies were regularly practiced here before these practices and more were condemned and the hospital was largely demolished.

The goal of this museum is "Bearing Witness, Giving Voice", and its exhibits tell the powerful stories of the people who lived and worked there.

Cannon Beach Glassblowing and Galleries Cannon Beach is rich with galleries full of innovative work from local and regional artists in a variety of mediums. We'll visit Icefire Glassworks while artists James Kingwell and Suzanne Kindland are actively creating works so that we can watch the beautiful colors and forms emerge. Next, you'll be dropped off at the North end of town, where there are many privately-owned galleries for 2-3 hours of free time to grab a bite to eat and visit galleries at your leisure.

It's situated on one of the most beautiful scenic points on the Historic Columbia River Highway, as a place for travelers to rest and refresh themselves as they made their way down the magnificent Columbia River Gorge. At the base of the recently reopened Multnomah Falls, the Historic Multnomah Falls Lodge awaits to offer a place of relaxation, a fine meal, the perfect gift, visitor information, or possibly an espresso or tasty treat to accompany your day trip. Tillamook Forestry Center and Lunch

Experience the wonders of the scenic Oregon Coast Range forest. Hands-on exhibits, fire lookout tower and a 250 ft pedestrian suspension bridge provide the opportunity for exploration and discovery.

Take a stroll through the forest to learn up-close about the Tillamook Burn of 1933 and the recovery since. This forest shows great diversity, with areas dominated by Douglas Fir, temperate rainforest, and coastal tree varieties.
