Writing Your Memories Genealogy First Steps Emily Doolin Aulicino (Med; APG), a genealogist since 1970 and a retired teacher, is a Speaker and Regional Coordinator for the International Society of Genetic Genealogists. She gives presentations nationally and internationally on genetic genealogy as well as writing your childhood memories and family stories.

Mrs. Aulicino has written two books: Genetic Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond and “Memoing�

My Memories. She established the DNA Interest Group, teaches classes on genetic genealogy at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, and has been the subject of several newspapers and a TV interview. Emily teaches Writing Your Memories and Genealogy First Steps at Woodstock Community Center through Portland Parks 4 & Recreation.

GOLF Golf Instructor Larry Fleckenstein

Larry has been playing golf since 1968. This is his 14th year providing senior golf instruction at Eastmoreland Golf Course.

Larry has successfully participated in local and statewide OGA, and Senior PGA events. Formerly, as a club member at Heron Lakes G.C., he was an 8-time Senior Club Champion, and was the first player to win the Overall Club Championship and the Senior Club Championship in the same year. Also, Larry won the Clark County Senior Invitational tournament (gross). In 1998, Larry finished second (gross) in the International World Masters Golf tournament held in Portland. Three years later he finished fourth in Australia at Royal Melbourne Golf Course World Masters.

Larry is well known as a player and an instructor. He has two program goals: 1. learn to look like a golfer, and 2. have fun when golfing.

Metro Movers are responsible for their own transportation.

Detailed information on the meeting location and directions will be included on receipt. Internet users can review receipt online.

Hike for Health and the Wilderness Hikes are transported in

15 passenger vans.

Primary Pick Up Location: 82nd and Siskiyou. Park facing 82nd. Meet 15 minutes prior to departure time. If indicated, certain hikes will have a second pickup location. Hikers meeting there must have a cell phone number on file and be available by phone the morning of the hike.

Secondary Pick Up Locations: When a secondary pickup location is scheduled (indicated by a bold "E", "S" or "W" in the hike description), participants should arrive at the location approximately 20 minutes after the primary pick up departure time. Van arrival times vary due to traffic conditions.

MILES/ELEVATION Miles are given for a round trip, except for loop or shuttle hikes, which are one-way. Elevation is cumulative elevation gain, adding all uphill portions.

PREREQUISITES The Senior Recreation hiking program offers 3 distinct and sequential levels. As individuals gain strength and endurance they may choose to qualify to longer and more difficult hikes. Hikers can do so either at the quarterly Hike for Health Qualifier or on a designated Metro Mover or Hike for Health hike. The free orientation is also required to all walkers and hikers new to the Senior Recreation program.

Hike Level 1 Metro Movers

Ability to walk a continuous 25-minute mile on uneven surfaces without shortness of breath. Please sign up for walks that you are confident you can complete.

Hike Level 2 Hike for Health

Must attend the Hike for Health Qualifier or a designated Metro Mover to be eligible for Hike for Health. Participants must notify the hike leader before attempting to qualify.

Hike Level 3 Wilderness Hikes

Must attend a designated Hike for Health qualifying hike to move on to Wilderness Hikes. Participants must notify hike leaders before attempting to qualify.

Hike for Health Qualifier

Mt Tabor Park parking lot Next to volcano crater and restrooms July 2 Tuesday, 10:00am-12:30pm #1108258 $6 Panoramic views of the city and Cascade Range, forested corridors, local rivers, native plants, and birds all combine for surprising rewards. Day-hiking is an ideal way to increase fitness levels while enjoying the natural beauty and history within the city and nearby. Walkers and hikers new to program are required to attend the free Walking and Hiking Orientation.

This is a 4-mile qualifying hike for those wanting to move on to Hike for Health. The majority of the hike is uphill and downhill with stair climbing and descending (100 steps) included. Paths are gravel and forest floor and the climb to the summit involves a 370-foot elevation gain. Please be prepared with hiking boots and gear as discussed in the Walking and Hiking Orientation. Internet users please print your confirmation for detailed directions to meeting location.

Prerequisite: Must be able to walk a 25-minute mile on uneven surfaces without shortness of breath. Please sign up for walks that you are confident that you can complete. The group stays together and no participant walks in front of the leader or behind the sweep.

Standard Hiking Supplies Standard supplies for Metro Movers, Hike for Health, and Wilderness Hikes • Appropriate Footwear: either hiking boots or equivalent with lugged soles for trails, sturdy shoes for walks • Clothing layers which wick well and allow you to maintain a comfortable temperature in hot and cold conditions, preventing condensation from sweat: - a lightweight, breathable base layer - a middle warmth layer - a rain jacket as third or outer layer (also serves as windbreaker) and optional rain pants • Hat (wide-brimmed in summer, warm in winter) • Gloves (under cold weather conditions, including high altitude in spring/fall) • Water – enough for the hike length, adjusting for temperature, elevation gain and sun exposure.

Recommend a base amount of 8oz per mile plus a spare pint for emergencies.

• Whistle on person (e.g. on lanyard around neck) • Sunglasses (optional, but recommended for some hikes) • Hiking poles (optional, but recommended for some hikes) • Optional energy snack

• Food for snacks on the trail and lunch, with extra for emergencies • Personal First Aid Kit (see Hikers First Aid Kit list for more details) • Flashlight (small, lightweight, LED recommended) • Emergency blanket/shelter • Spare eyeglasses (optional, but recommended) • Many additional safety items (e.g. map, compass, communication devices, Wilderness First Aid Kit) are carried by the hike leaders, so it is important that all hikers stay with the group. HIKE FOR HEALTH This summer we are experimenting with a new approach to enable Tuesday hikers to enjoy wilderness hikes in smaller groups and hiking at different paces.

We are offering two single van hikes each week for six weeks. These six hikes will be offered twice: once at a relaxed pace and again at a slightly faster pace. The two speeds will be within the range of normal Tuesday hikes.

VAN EXCURSIONS Cascades Raptor Center

Cascades Raptor Center staff will introduce us up-close to Avian Ambassadors who reside at their beautiful, wooded site along the side of Spencer’s Butte near Eugene.

Cascades focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating birds of prey including eagles, owls, hawks, osprey and falcons. We will take part in their “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” program to learn about the work conducted here as well as the important role that raptors play in our ecosystem.

The private, guided program will last about an hour then we’ll have time on our own to explore the rest of the grounds and meet more birds. Dress for the weather and bring money for lunch in Eugene. Fee includes admission and tour.

Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery held their winter encampment at Ft. Clatsop, a replica of which falls within Lewis and Clark National Park outside of Astoria. We’ll take park in a ranger-led Living History program here before heading to Ft. Stevens to explore the fort and battery.

Other highlights of this trip include beach time at the wreck of the Peter Iredale and a stop at the South Jetty to take in the view from the top of the observation tower. Bring a picnic lunch.

Elephant Garlic Festival

Join Senior Recreation as we head to the annual Elephant Garlic Festival in North Plains, Oregon, where the motto is: "Fun Stinks!". Ride the Magic Mile chair lift to 7,000 feet with panoramic views of the Cascade Mountain Range. Tour the majestic 1930s Timberline Lodge or relax on the mountainside. The Magic Mile Chair Lift is an open air ski lift - this is a constantly moving chair and moves slowly but does not stop for boarding.

Bring a sack lunch or money to purchase from one of the restaurants at the lodge. Bring $18 for lift ride ticket.

Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

Ride in style on a historic locomotive along Tillamook Bay from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach. This route travels refurbished rail lines originally from the 1800s. This is a round-trip ride, with a half-hour layover at Rockaway to stretch your legs and enjoy the beach. Choose between covered and uncovered rail cars, and bring your binoculars for bird and wildlife spotting.

Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery held their winter encampment at Ft. Clatsop, a replica of which falls within Lewis and Clark National Park outside of Astoria. We'll take park in a ranger-led Living History program here before heading to Ft. Stevens to explore the fort and battery.

Other highlights of this trip include beach time at the wreck of the Peter Iredale and a stop at the South Jetty to take in the view from the top of the observation tower. Bring a picnic lunch.

Brownsville Hands on History

Linn County Historical Society hosts Hands on History each summer as an opportunity for participants to practice crafts and activities that are historic to the mid to late 1800s. Try out candle making, gold panning, wheat grinding, blacksmithing, weaving, spinning, cider pressing, washing clothes on a washboard and lots of other day-to-day activities. GATEWAY DISCOVERY PARK Daily Drop-In Activities: June-October Daily 11am-6pm All Ages - Hours and days subject to change due to weather, events, rentals and staffing.

Activities include, ping pong, giant Jenga, giant chess, cornhole, bad mitten, board games and more!

Tennis on the Go: Every Wednesday June 5 – September 25 12:30-2:30pm 6 years + - This is an instructor led introduction to the game of tennis through rally & game-based self-discovery with short court boundaries, mini-nets and foam balls. Balls and racquets available to use on-site.

Wednesday Night Groove: Every Wednesday June 12 – August 28 5-7pm All ages - Come out and enjoy music while getting your groove on! DJ’s are spinning beats and taking requests!

Concerts on the Lawn: Thursday, July 18, August 15 6-8pm All Ages - Enjoy a FREE concert on the lawn at Gateway Discovery Park. Bring a blanket or low back chair to enjoy two hours of music, dancing and fun.

Food vendors will be on site throughout the concert. Music: To be announced!

Chess for Success: Friday, June 28, July 26, August 23 10am-2pm 4 years+ - Drop-in and play chess anytime between 10am and 2pm. Chess for Success staff will be on-site to assist players and share the love of the game.

Picnic in the Park: Sunday, June 30th, July 28, Aug 25 Noon-3pm All Ages Activities include music by DJ George, Bubble Soccer, lawn games, Loteria and much more. Food vendors will be on site if you want to buy your lunch or grab a snack!

June Events

All Inclusive Bingo in the Park: Tuesday, June 25 1:30-3:30pm - Bring your lunch or buy something from the food cart. We will be playing bingo while meeting new friends and visiting old ones all while trying to win prizes! This outing is wheelchair accessible.

July Events

All Inclusive Teen Night: Thursday, July 11th 6-8pm - Enjoy a night of music, dancing and fun. DJ George will be on site taking requests to get the party going and the dancing flowing.

Ice cream vendor will be on site.

Movie Night: Friday, July 26 6-10pm All Ages Join us for a movie on the lawn on our 25 ft. inflatable movie screen! We will have a DJ and food vendors prior to the movie.

Bring your blankets and low back chairs, grab a snack and get ready for some fun! The movie will start at dusk.
