HOW TO REQUEST INCLUSION SERVICES • Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and register for that class.

• Contact Inclusion Services at 971-284-5060.

• If this is your first time requesting accommodations through Inclusion Services, you will need to complete either a phone intake or an Accommodation Form that can be sent over email. This process is to help determine what level of accommodation needed for the participant.

• Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

IMPORTANT DETAILS • A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same.

• Accommodations are made as needed and can be flexible, as well creative.

• Participants need to register for activities that are intended for their birth age.

• Personal care is provided for activities for individuals up to age 12.

Sarah has been a writer for more than 40 years and a language arts teacher for 20 years.

Sarah has an M.A. in Psycholinguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University and has written hundreds of published articles for newspapers and magazines. For the last seven years, she has been writing a column on the 60s for The Independent in Livermore, CA. She recently relocated to Portland and is teaching language arts workshops at Oregon Episcopal School. We’re exciting for Sarah to offer her workshop, The Memories Train, through Senior Recreation.

If you enjoy working with crafts, writing poems, short stories, novels or your memoirs, oral storytelling, singing or playing an instrument, or engaging in another creative medium such as photography, painting, clay, drawing, creative stitchery, scrapbooking, etc., this interactive workshop will provide many ideas for future projects. We will look at pictures, listen to music, see clips of films, TV shows and commercials of the decade, and much more, to get the creative juices flowing.

In the process, you will not only journey back through your own life, but you will hear the memories and experiences of others. You will then express your own memories and experiences in the medium of your choice and share it with the class. In addition to having fun reminiscing and sharing in a sense of community, hearing others’ experiences could enhance your own projects and take them to a whole new level of self-expression. The first workshop will focus on the 60's and will end with a decade-themed party!

GOLF Golf Instructor Larry Fleckenstein

Larry has been playing golf since 1968. This is his 14th year providing senior golf instruction at Eastmoreland Golf Course.

Larry has successfully participated in local and statewide OGA, and Senior PGA events. Formerly, as a club member at Heron Lakes G.C., he was an 8-time Senior Club Champion, and was the first player to win the Overall Club Championship and the Senior Club Championship in the same year. Also, Larry won the Clark County Senior Invitational tournament (gross). In 1998, Larry finished second (gross) in the International World Masters Golf tournament held in Portland. Three years later he finished fourth in Australia at Royal Melbourne Golf Course World Masters.

Larry is well known as a player and an instructor. He has two program goals: 1. learn to look like a golfer, and 2. have fun when golfing.

Metro Movers are responsible for their own transportation.

Hike for Health and the Wilderness Hikes are transported in

15 passenger vans.

Primary Pick Up Location: 82nd and Siskiyou. Park facing 82nd. Meet 15 minutes prior to departure time. If indicated, certain hikes will have a second pickup location. Hikers meeting there must have a cell phone number on file and be available by phone the morning of the hike.

Secondary Pick Up Locations: When a secondary pickup location is scheduled (indicated by a bold "E", "S" or "W" in the hike description), participants should arrive at the location approximately 20 minutes after the primary pick up departure time. Van arrival times vary due to traffic conditions.

MILES/ELEVATION Miles are given for a round trip, except for loop or shuttle hikes, which are one-way. Elevation is cumulative elevation gain, adding all uphill portions.

PREREQUISITES The Senior Recreation hiking program offers 3 distinct and sequential levels. As individuals gain strength and endurance they may choose to qualify to longer and more difficult hikes. Hikers can do so either at the quarterly Hike for Health Qualifier or on a designated Metro Mover or Hike for Health hike. The free orientation is also required to all walkers and hikers new to the Senior Recreation program.

Hike Level 1 Metro Movers

Ability to walk a continuous 25-minute mile on uneven surfaces without shortness of breath. Please sign up for walks that you are confident you can complete.

Hike Level 2 Hike for Health

Must attend the Hike for Health Qualifier or a designated Metro Mover to be eligible for Hike for Health. Participants must notify the hike leader before attempting to qualify.

Hike Level 3 Wilderness Hikes

Must attend a designated Hike for Health qualifying hike to move on to Wilderness Hikes. Participants must notify hike leaders before attempting to qualify.

Hike for Health Qualifier

Mt Tabor Park parking lot Next to volcano crater and restrooms April 9 Tuesday, 10:00am-12:30pm #1106375 $6 Panoramic views of the city and Cascade Range, forested corridors, local rivers, native plants, and birds all combine for surprising rewards. Day-hiking is an ideal way to increase fitness levels while enjoying the natural beauty and history within the city and nearby. Walkers and hikers new to program are required to attend the free Walking and Hiking Orientation.

This is a 4-mile qualifying hike for those wanting to move on to Hike for Health. The majority of the hike is uphill and downhill with stair climbing and descending (100 steps) included. Paths are gravel and forest floor and the climb to the summit involves a 370-foot elevation gain. Please be prepared with hiking boots and gear as discussed in the Walking and Hiking Orientation. Internet users please print your confirmation for detailed directions to meeting location.

Prerequisite: Must be able to walk a 25-minute mile on uneven surfaces without shortness of breath. Please sign up for walks that you are confident that you can complete. The group stays together and no participant walks in front of the leader or behind the sweep.

Moderate. Visitors to Cooper Mountain Nature Park will be rewarded with grand views of the Chehalem Mountains, close-up looks at Oregon white oaks and a small prairie that has sat relatively undisturbed for hundreds of years.

Easy. The Refuge is home to nearly 200 species of birds, more than 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. This US Fish & Wildlife Service area is particularly interesting during bird migration.

We will look at pictures, listen to music, see clips of films, TV shows and commercials of the decade, and much more, to get the creative juices flowing. Astoria Cruise Day Adventure

Meet us there! Board the Portland Spirit for an epic, 60 mile luxury cruise down the Willamette and Columbia Rivers to Astoria. "Travel from Portland's vibrant harbor through the forest covered coast range on an adventurefilled day retracing the route of Lewis and Clark." Tour the recently-completed Historical Carousel and Museum where volunteer carvers have restored a 1909 Dentzel mechanism to carousel glory. Pick your favorite animal and take a ride! Lelooska Native American Performance

Set in the fire-lit replica of a Kwa'kwaka'wakw ceremonial house, the living history performance consists of dramatic narration and dance presentations of traditional Northwest Coast ceremonial masks. The performance is designed to give the audience an understanding of Northwest Coast First Nations culture, as well as a feeling of intimate participation in this living history. The Lelooska Museum located in Ariel, WA, houses an immense collection of artifacts from many regions, a replica fur trade store and a gift shop.

Petroglyph Hike, Gorge Discovery Museum

Take an archaeological journey on a ranger-guided hike in the Horsethief Lake area of Washington's Columbia Hills State Park. View the petroglyphs and pictographs at this National Historic Site, including Tsagagalal, "She Who Watches". Afterwards, we'll have lunch in The Dalles and visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center to learn more of the history, flora and fauna, and Native American culture of the Columbia Gorge.

Petroglyph Hike, Gorge Discovery Museum

Take an archaeological journey on a ranger-guided hike in the Horsethief Lake area of Washington's Columbia Hills State Park. View the petroglyphs and pictographs at this National Historic Site, including Tsagagalal, "She Who Watches". Afterwards, we'll have lunch in The Dalles and visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center to learn more of the history, flora and fauna, and Native American culture of the Columbia Gorge.

VAN EXCURSIONS Sheep to Shawl

From sheep to shawl, we'll experience the whole process of shearing sheep, alpacas, llamas and rabbits, and processing their wool into fibers. View displays and demonstrations of spinning, weaving, knitting, rug-hooking, and the production of intricate lace. Come get inspired at this annual event held at the Willamette Heritage Center and Thomas Kay Woolen Mills in Salem. There will be lots to experience and explore, including the open museum buildings, live music and vendors. Bring lunch or money to purchase lunch. We suggest you bring your lunch, as there may be limited food vendors and sometimes a long wait for food.

The Willamette Valley was chosen as an ideal location for this sake brewery thanks to our abundant rain and our geology.

Learn about the process of milling and fermenting rice into Oregon's very own rice wine. Sample from over 30 craft and imported sake.

Lelooska Native American Performance

Set in the fire-lit replica of a Kwa'kwaka'wakw ceremonial house, the living history performance consists of dramatic narration and dance presentations of traditional Northwest Coast ceremonial masks. The performance is designed to give the audience an understanding of Northwest Coast First Nations culture, as well as a feeling of intimate participation in this living history. The Lelooska Museum located in Ariel, WA, houses an immense collection of artifacts from many regions, a replica fur trade store and a gift shop.

Standard Hiking Supplies Standard supplies for Metro Movers, Hike for Health, and Wilderness Hikes • Appropriate Footwear: either hiking boots or equivalent with lugged soles for trails, sturdy shoes for walks • Clothing layers which wick well and allow you to maintain a comfortable temperature in hot and cold conditions, preventing condensation from sweat: - a lightweight, breathable base layer - a middle warmth layer - a rain jacket as third or outer layer (also serves as windbreaker) and optional rain pants • Hat (wide-brimmed in summer, warm in winter) • Gloves (under cold weather conditions, including high altitude in spring/fall) • Water – enough for the hike length, adjusting for temperature, elevation gain and sun exposure.

Recommend a base amount of 8oz per mile plus a spare pint for emergencies.
