VAN EXCURSIONS – SPRING

Petroglyph Hike and Gorge Discovery Museum

Take an archaeological journey on a Rangerguided hike in the Horsethief Lake area of Washington’s Columbia Hills State Park. View the petroglyphs and pictographs at this National Historic Site, including Tsagagalal, “She Who Watches”. Afterwards, we’ll have lunch in the Dalles and visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center to learn more of the history, flora and fauna, and Native American culture of the Columbia Gorge. Fee includes admissions and guided tours. Bring money for lunch in the Dalles. Mobility Rating: This trip is not accessible to those using a wheelchair, walker or motorized scooter. It’s recommended that you bring water, sturdy shoes (not sandals), walking sticks, a sun hat, sunscreen, and a windbreaker or rain jacket. The area can be windy and there is no shade. Bring binoculars if you have them. The hike will take about 1.5 hours and cover .75 miles. It is not strenuous, but there are no places to sit, and there are short sections of rough rock and steep grade. Gaiety Hollow and Salem Area Nurseries

Iris and peonies are the stars of the day in this flower tour to Salem. We’ll start the day with a docent-guided tour of peaceful, inspiring Gaiety Hollow Garden at the Lord and Schryver Conservancy. We will follow this tour up with visits to our favorite iris and peony nurseries, with display gardens bursting with flowers and plants available for purchase. Bring money for lunch and purchases. Mount St Helens Volcano Tour and Picnic

At 8:32 on Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, Mount St Helens erupted and blew down or scorched 230 square miles of forest...30 years later, recovery at Mount St Helens continues. Learn about the blast through stops at the Mount St Helens Visitor Center and Johnston Ridge Observatory, which host interpretive displays that tell the biological, geological, and human story of Mount St Helens. Fee includes admission. Please bring Golden Age Pass if you have one. Bring a sack lunch or money to purchase a sandwich at Subway to enjoy picnic-style. Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge and Lunch

Visit the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and the Chinook Plank House. Learn about Lewis & Clark’s visit to the area, and historic and present day Native American use of the area. Bring your binoculars for spotting spring songbirds! If weather cooperates, we will take a short trail walk to the Plank House. Bring money for lunch in Ridgefield.
