Portland Parks & Recreation - Summer 2014

Educational Preschools Each of our four Community Centers offer an educational preschool program.

Our Educational Preschool Programs are all based on the philosophy that children learn through play, by exploring & manipulating their environment. The goal of our programs is to provide opportunities for children to develop & grow at their own rate. To enhance this experience, our classrooms are set up in learning centers that enable children to explore different areas of development, such as fine motor, socialization, pre-math, p re-reading & listening skills. All of our programs run concurrently with the Portland Public Schools’ calendar. Child must be potty trained & meet the minimum age required for each specific class by September 1st. Once registered, it is assumed your child will remain with the program for the entire school year. For more information on specific programs or to register, please contact the individual site.

The Active Pass

Each of our four Community Centers offer a fitness program and two offer an Active Pass.

Don’t want to fill out paperwork each year to “renew” your Annual Pass? This pass is for you! The NEW Active pass allows YOU to decide how long your pass will last! It could be two months, six months or 3 years. YOU decide! Great option for college students, great for someone who just wants to try us out, great for those that don’t want to bother with the paperwork every year! For your convenience, the Active Pass will auto-renew each month. Simply pay your first monthly fee upon registering and all future monthly payments are deducted directly from your debit or credit card.

Summer Camps

Summer Camps! Unplugged

Structure & Variety

We spend our days engaged in active, creative, and social activities that involve very little or no screen time.

We include a variety of activities to keep young minds and bodies active and challenged. Free choice and relaxation time provides a chance to enjoy lowkey activities between more in-depth, structured projects and games. All children are encouraged to participate, but never forced. Field trips to natural areas, recreation sites, and cultural centers are fun learning experiences. We create an environment that is structured and supportive, but also fun and flexible.

Registation & Payment

Staff & Safety

Camps fill quickly, so register early. If you need to withdraw, a full refund will only be issued if the notice is given by noon on the Wednesday before camp starts. Prorated refunds will be given after that. Withdrawals made less than three days in advance will be assessed a $25 withdrawal fee. Payment is due prior to the camp start date. You may pay the entire balance at the time of registration, or you can pay a down payment of $10 per week and schedule your payments to be due Monday prior to the camp’s start date. 9 Peninsula Park Community Center

503-823-3620

Safety is our number one priority. We hire highly skilled, energetic, and caring people who truly love working with children. All of our staff are First Aid and CPR certified, and must pass a background check.

PEN ROSE GARDEN is

OPEN for BUSINESS!

The business of volunteering, that is. Ever wonder what it takes to keep Peninsula Park Rose Garden looking beautiful all summer for the local community, not to mention being a destination site for national and international visitors? Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden currently support more than two dozen volunteers who donate hundreds of hours during peak season, which runs from June through September. New volunteers are always welcome. No special expertise with roses is required as garden veterans are always on hand to provide guidance and easy-to-follow instructions. That means you’ll have the benefit of working with a friendly team at one of the city’s loveliest public gardens, all while keeping the garden beautiful. From the first week in June until the end of September, volunteers help with deadheading and weeding Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon. All you need are comfortable garden gloves. Pruners are available, but you are welcome to bring you own. On Fridays, veteran Master Gardeners are on site to work with volunteers and host an informal break at 10 a.m. This gives volunteers the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about roses from the park’s horticultural staff and Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden. One-hour orientation sessions are scheduled for June 4 and 6 at 9:00 a.m. If you can’t attend either session, or you want more details about volunteering at the garden, please email volunteer coordinator, Carolyn Bailey, at penrosevolunteers@gmail.com

Portland Parks & Recreation - Summer 2014

Dance • Theatre • Music The Peninsula Performing Arts Academy provides a variety of choices of performance arts to all ages! Our Academy focuses on three mediums: Theatre, Dance & Music.

6 months - 4 years

For the youngest participants we have our “Exploring Movement” classes. These classes are designed to engage parents & children in a positive, fun & active experience. If you & your child are interested in music, be sure to check-out our “Music - Exploring Together!” course located with the Music Program.

3 years - 6 years

At age 3, children are eligible to join our progression based educational arts programs. Students ages 3-6 can work on their balance & coordination with our Level I dance classes. These courses are traditionally some of our most popular courses and they focus on the introduction to various dance mediums, including: creative movement, ballet, tap, and hip-hop.

6 years - 14 years

Students can further develop their dance technique in ballet, tap, or hip-hop. Through our Theater program, students can participate in a performing piece that integrates vocal music, dance and theatre arts. The “American Musical Showcase” class is an interactive and popular program that performs well-known Broadway shows quarterly. Students enrolled in most Level I dance programs or above will participate alongside the theater students to make the show truly the culminating center of the performing arts academy. Children may repeat our classes as new concepts & materials will continue to be introduced. At age 6, students can enroll for private guitar, piano, violin, or vocal lessons held weekly at Peninsula at an incredible value.

14 years & up

For our students who are 14 & up, we offer a variety of courses in every category. Classes include: Guitar, Ballet, Tap and Theatre. In addition the center offers a wide variety of adult fitness courses and courses designed for both parent & child to attend.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Meet our Performing Arts Team! Rebecca Hall began dancing at the age of 13, studying Jazz, Modern, and Ballet. She earned her B.S. in Dance Pedagogy from the University of Idaho. Rebecca has experience studying and performing with notable artists in the NW and nationally. She brings her knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology and artistic talents to the classes she teaches.

Bayley Johnson has had a passion for dance since she was three-years-old. Classically trained in ballet and jazz, she broadened her focus in college at The University of Montana where she studied improvisation, hip-hop, and ethnic dance. She enjoys taking class as often as she can and is excited to share her love of dance with others. She has been teaching for Peninsula Park Community Center for two years and hopes to continue the tradition for years to come.

Adam Brock graduated with a BM in Jazz Performance from PSU in 2011. He’s been teaching guitar and piano lessons for 5 years, and loves showing students how exciting and fun music making is! Adam’s music has been featured on releases by local record label Tender Loving Empire (Radiation City, Typhoon). Adam was selected as a national finalist in the 2013 New Song Contest out of 2,000 entries and received the highest score for emerging artist from the editors of the Deli Magazine. He also has a little ditty that will be accompanying a commercial in the 2014 Super Bowl!

Carlos Lasuncet moved to North Portland from Los Angeles in 2007. He brought with him years of music experience from working in recording studios and performance venues. He is a dedicated educator, working at Open Meadow Middle School as a science and music teacher. He enjoys any opportunity to share his knowledge and lifelong passion for music with children, and hopes to inspire young students to learn how to express themselves though music.

Marissa Manza began teaching at Peninsula Park Community Center this Fall and has been a welcome addition to the team. She will graduate this May with a degree and license in elementary and special education. Originally from Tacoma, Washington, she started dancing when she was three years old and continued to dance in the areas of ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, and contemporary through college. Marissa was part of the Tacoma YMCA dance company and was a dance instructor at the YMCA for five years before moving to Portland. Dancing is one of her biggest passions, and she loves to share that passion with others through teaching. Sandy Shaner has been a director, choreographer, performer and more for over 35 years. She has produced and directed for the Oregon Symphony, as well as been the Artistic Director for the former “Peanut Gallery Theatre”. After receiving training at Portland State University and Portland Community College, Sandy has taught dance, theatre, and infant classes throughout the Portland-Metro area. She continues her education at PSU as a Psychology Major and plans to continue her love of the arts after completing her degree. 25 Peninsula Park Community Center

Facility Rentals

Inclusion Services For People With Special Needs Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in programs offered citywide.

How it Works

1. Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and then the PP&R site where the activity is being offered. 2. Register for the activity. You can do this in person at a PP&R site, or on-line at www. PortlandParks.org. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity (online, check the box.) 3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member. At the end of the phone intake, it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

Important Details Peninsula Park Community Center offers a wide range of rental opportunities. From corporate meetings to private parties, we can accommodate all of your event needs. For more information about facility rentals and party packages, call us at:

503.823.3620 31 Peninsula Park Community Center

A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed, and can be flexible and creative. Participants need to register for activities that are intended for their birth age. Personal care is provided for activities in the preschool and youth category, up through age 12. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required.
