Spring Break Explorations at Leach Botanical Garden Volcanic Bombs and Erratic Cobbles:
Leach Garden Geology Camp Cobbles carried in the Missoula Floods rest on Leach Garden’s creek bank, and a volcanic bomb from the Boring Lava Fields turned up in the meadow. Learn to read the geological landscape with Dr. Michael L. Cummings. He’ll teach you how to use topographical maps, levels, soil probes, compasses and LIDAR to collect and record information, while also sharpening your observation skills. Using your data, you’ll create a map of Leach Garden’s geology. When camp is over, you’ll see geological stories everywhere!
Dr. Cummings is an Emeritus Professor at Portland State University. He enjoys working with kids, using a hands-on, accessible approach to science that creates interest and enthusiasm.

Elk Rock Gardens at the Bishop's Close
Elk Rock is a classic Scottish garden designed by John Olmsted, an influential landscaper in Portland at the turn of the 20th century. Olmsted developed Portland's early park system and landscaped the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905. With any luck, we've timed our visit at the peak of spring blooms, featuring rhododendrons and azaleas as well as beautiful hardscaping and enticing paths to follow. Bring money for lunch at an Italian bistro in Lake Oswego. Mobility Rating: This trip is not accessible to those using a wheelchair, walker or motorized scooter. Paths through the garden are gravel. Tuesday, 5/15 9:30am-3:30pm $19 1086880
Red Ridge Olive Mill Tour and Lunch
Olives are cultivated, harvested, pressed, stored and bottled with as much care and pride as the more locally familiar life-cycle of grapes. A private tasting and tour at this state of-the-art facility teaches your palate about official pairings for olive oils. Rolling hills, breathtaking country scenery and a stocked gift store add another local gem to your list of all things delightful. Fee includes olive oil tasting and catered charcuterie lunch. Bring money for purchases and optional wine tasting, if desired. Mobility Rating: Accessible to walkers, wheelchairs and motorized scooters. Continuous standing and walking, some uneven terrain. Thursday, 4/19 9:30am-3:00pm $45 1086842

Nature Day Camp Volunteer - Jr. Naturalist
Age 13-17 Responsible, patient teens who have experience working with children and enjoy nature are encouraged to apply to be a volunteer Jr. Naturalist with Nature Day Camp (ages 13-17) or the Rockin' Robins Preschool Camp (ages 15-17 preferred). The Jr. Naturalist program requires two days of training at Mt. Tabor Park (June 26 and 28 or June 27 and 29). Teens will be trained in child development, communication skills, role-modeling, and instruction techniques. Jr. Naturalists work directly with the children – supervised by paid staff – and are given opportunities to develop teaching, leadership, and group facilitation skills. Teens accepted into the program must volunteer for at least two (but not more than four) weeks. Hours of volunteering each week of camp: Nature Day Camp—8:45am-3:45pm; Rockin Robins Preschool 8:45am-1:45pm. All teens who apply must possess enthusiasm about nature, patience with children, and the openness to learn new skills. If the fee is a barrier, please let us know, and it will be waived. M-F • 8:45am-3:45pm Mt. Tabor Meet at the covered shelter at Mt Tabor Park—across from the playground. *No class on 7/4 Date
