Citywide Racial Equity Goals and Strategies EQUITY GOAL #1

OVERALL STRATEGIES

We will end racial disparities within city government, so there is fairness in hiring and promotions, greater opportunities in contracting, and equitable services to all residents.

1. Use a racial equity framework: Use a racial equity framework that clearly articulates racial equity; implicit and explicit bias; and individual, institutional, and structural racism.

EQUITY GOAL #2 We will strengthen outreach, public engagement, and access to City services for communities of color and immigrant and refugee communities, and support or change existing services using racial equity best practices.

EQUITY GOAL #3 We will collaborate with communities and institutions to eliminate racial inequity in all areas of government, including education, criminal justice, environmental justice, health, housing, transportation, and economic success.

2. Build organizational capacity: Commit to the breadth and depth of institutional transformation so that impacts are sustainable. While the leadership of electeds and officials is critical, changes take place on the ground, through building infrastructure that creates racial equity experts and teams throughout the city government.

3. Implement a racial equity lens: Racial inequities are not random; they have been created and sustained over time. Inequities will not disappear on their own. It is essential to use a racial equity lens when changing the policies, programs, and practices that perpetuate inequities, and when developing new policies and programs.

4. Be data driven: Measurement must take place at two levels—first, to measure the success of specific programmatic and policy changes; and second, to develop baselines, set goals, and measure progress. Using data in this manner is necessary for accountability.

5. Partner with other institutions and communities: Government work on racial equity is necessary, but insufficient. To achieve racial equity in the community, government needs to work in partnership with communities and institutions to achieve meaningful results.

6. Operate with urgency and accountability: When change is a priority, urgency is felt and change is embraced. Building in institutional accountability mechanisms using a clear plan of action will allow accountability. Collectively, we must create greater urgency and public commitment to achieve racial equity.

We spend our days engaged in active, creative, and social activities that involve very little or no screen time.

Camps fill quickly, so register early. If you need to withdraw, a full refund will only be issued if the notice is given by noon on the Wednesday before camp starts. Prorated refunds will be given after that. Withdrawals made less than three days in advance will be assessed a $15 withdrawal fee.

We hire highly skilled, energetic, and caring people who truly love working with children.

All of our staff are First Aid and CPR certified, and must pass a background check.

Structure & Variety

We include a variety of activities to keep young minds and bodies active and challenged. Free choice and relaxation time provides a chance to enjoy low-key activities between more in-depth, structured projects and games. All children are encouraged to participate, but never forced.

Field trips to natural areas, recreation sites, and cultural centers are fun learning experiences. We create an environment that is structured and supportive, but also fun and flexible.

Experience action packed camps filled with exciting activities. Build cooperation, stimulate imaginations & increase selfesteem while discovering ways to positively use your energy. Spring Into the Rose Garden With birds getting busy and spring bulbs sprouting, now’s the perfect time to think about putting some extra spring in your step by volunteering at Peninsula Park Rose Garden.

New volunteers are always welcome and no special expertise is required.

Come for an hour or come for a whole morning, whatever works best for you between 8 a.m. and noon. Please join our pre-season weed and tidy crew every Friday, April 1 – May 27.

And mark your calendars for the first week in June, when we’ll kick off the official deadheading schedule every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning.

Meet our Performing Arts Team!

Stephanie Ennes

Sandy Shaner

Stephanie was raised in Hillsboro, Oregon. She began her dance training at New Vision Dance Center. Studying under the direction of Heather Renk, Bradian Lien, Lynn Stahr, and Elizabeth Burden. Stephanie received her B.A. in Dance and minor in Business Administration from the University of Oregon in 2015. There she performed in many faculty and student productions, including a piece from award winning choreographer Mark Haim. Now in the Portland area, Stephanie will be teaching for Portland Parks & Recreation, participating with Muddy Feet Contemporary Dance, and 11:Dance Co.

Sandy Shaner has been involved with the performing arts for 40 years. She has extensive dance training at Portland State University, Portland Community College, Billings Dance Studio, Act 1 School of Dance, The Portland Dance Academy, Northwest Dance Academy as well as an abundance of dance workshops. Sandy has worked at several dance studios as an instructor of acting and dance movement, and she continues to instruct at Lake Oswego Academy of Dance, which is regarded as one of Portland’s most reputable and professional dance studio.

Sandy has been teaching at LO for 21 years. Sandy has also received training at PSU in early child development and education.

Eden Baron Trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, Eden is a well rounded professional of the performing arts.

In New York, Eden worked as an assistant choreographer for a theater company, and was a part of many professional dance workshops. Eden sings professionally, has done voice over work, plays guitar, and her hobbies include art and spending time in nature. Accomplished choreographer, dancer, and singer, Eden has turned her love for the craft into teaching and inspiring people of all ages to express themselves through the arts. She is thrilled to share her gift with Portland Parks and Recreation, and hopes be a part of the community for years to come!

Mia Mendicino Mia Mendicino has spent 40 years in the performing arts as a dancer, actor, choreographer, and director. She has toured the U.S. and Canada as a member, choreographer, and assistant director of Hands in Harmony Theatre Company. Mia majored in theatre and dance at the University of Wyoming and served as assistant choreographer/ assistant director of the Wyoming Centennial Ballet. She spent eight years as a director and choreographer for Las Vegas based Sign Design Theatre Company. Mia has served as our Performing Arts Theatre Director for the past two years.

C-c Braun C-c Braun is an educator, choreographer, performer and community arts activist. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from Arizona State University. C-c is a seasoned choreographer and performer who has performed throughout the United States and danced with D.A.R.T. and FLUX Dance Companies from Phoenix, Arizona. From teaching dance in public education to facilitating community arts projects, C-c has enjoyed observing how dance can empower and inspire others towards greater life goals.

6 months - 4 years For the youngest participants we have our “Exploring Movement” classes.

These classes are designed to engage parents & children in a positive, fun & active experience. If you & your child are interested in music, be sure to check-out our “Music - Exploring Together!” course located with the Music Program.

3 years - 6 years At age 3, children are eligible to join our progression based educational arts programs. Students ages 3-6 can work on their balance & coordination with our Level I dance classes. These courses are traditionally some of our most popular courses and they focus on the introduction to various dance mediums, including: creative movement, ballet, tap, and hip-hop.

6 years - 14 years Students can further develop their dance technique in ballet, tap, or hip-hop. Through our Theater program, students can participate in a performing piece that integrates vocal music, dance and theatre arts. The “American Musical Showcase” class is an interactive and popular program that performs well-known Broadway shows quarterly. Students enrolled in most Level I dance programs or above will participate alongside the theater students to make the show truly the culminating center of the performing arts academy. Children may repeat our classes as new concepts & materials will continue to be introduced.

At age 6, students can enroll for private guitar, piano, violin, or vocal lessons held weekly at Peninsula at an incredible value.

14 years & up For our students who are 14 & up, we offer a variety of courses in every category. Classes include: Private Music Lessons Ballet, Tap and Theatre. In addition the center offers a wide variety of adult fitness courses and courses designed for both parent & child to attend.

John Enebrad John has been an active member of the music community since 2009. He is a multi-instrumentalist who has played for Pacific NW bands such as Neighbors (Seattle), Ten Speed Music (Portland), Hauksness (Portland), and many more. He has been playing multiple instruments since the age of twelve.

Caleb Hardy is an experienced children’s choir director and folk dance teacher. He loves to sing and play the violin, and with four younger siblings, knows a lot about helping younger children sing and make music!

Alberta Hardy Alberta Hardy has years of experience teaching music and theater to young people. She has a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Theater from Portland State University. She is a registered Suzuki violin teacher, and teaches music and theater through Portland Parks community centers and other arts organizations.

The Historic Overlook House is just that place, perfect for your wedding, anniversary party, business retreat or any special event that deserves a beautiful and unique setting. Built in 1927, the handsome brick and stucco Tudor residence sits on more than an acre of beautifully landscaped grounds. Views of the Willamette River and Portland’s West Hills span from the grounds as well as the plentiful windows. The house is open for tours every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.

INCLEMENT WEATHER If the City of Portland public school districts (Portland Public, Parkrose, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Centennial) are closed because of weather conditions, PP&R classes and youth basketball in those school districts are cancelled.

However, some sites may be open for drop-in activities. Call the specific PP&R facility for information and opening/ closing times. If inclement weather is forecast on weekends or holidays, call the PP&R facility or program for operating hours and activity cancellations.
