DEAR NEIGHBOR, As you may know, Mayor Wheeler reassigned bureaus in early September. I am honored and excited to step back into the role of Parks Commissioner.

As one of my heroes, former City Commissioner and Portland Parks & Recreation Director Charles Jordan once said, “parks are more than just fun and games.” They are essential to a healthy and thriving city.

PP&R is proud to provide robust, low-cost recreation opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. From swimming to ceramics, basketball to dance, there’s something for everyone.

INCLEMENT WEATHER PP&R classes, activities, rentals, and sports events may be canceled due to inclement weather, such as ice, snow, or extreme heat. Check with your PP&R facility for the most current information via phone or online at portlandparks.org. Some recreation programs may run as conditions and staff availability allow. Safety is a major factor in determining operations at each PP&R facility. PP&R facilities, our social media outlets, and our website will all feature operating information including opening and closing times.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Occasionally, specific facilities within the center (i.e. spa pool, lap pool, etc.) may be closed or have limited operating hours due to repairs, maintenance, inclement weather, holidays, and/or special events. Such closings will not result in a reduction of pass holders’ rates or drop-in admission fees. When possible, the times and dates of closures will be posted in advance.

We request that children age 6 yrs or older use the locker room of their own gender or the family changing room with a parent or guardian. Five family changing rooms are located near the entrance to the swimming pool and are available for families with children and/ or individuals with disabilities requiring assistance or special accommodations.

All other individuals must use gender specific locker rooms. Leave your valuables at home. Do not leave items in unlocked lockers.

Bring your own lock. We sell key locks for $7. We do not have locks to lend.

Cardio Kickboxing: A cardiovascular exercise that involves kicks, punches and core. Full-body toning is also incorporated in every class. This class can be modified to any fitness level.

Nia: Integrates dance, martial arts and healing art forms into a unique program that leaves you feeling exhilarated and powerful.

Increase cardiovascular health, strength, balance, agility and creative expression. All sizes and fitness levels welcome.

PoundTM: Combine cardio, strength training and Pilates with drumming to achieve a full-body workout. Using lightly weighted drumsticks, RipsticksTM, participants can be expected to burn calories in the cardio jam session!

Step 'n' Sculpt: A brilliant mix of step and floor cardio, cardiostrength muscular endurance, core training, Pilates, and balance work.

ZumbaTM: A high energy combination of Latin, Reggae and Salsa dance steps. Routines combine fast and slow rhythms to achieve a balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. Join our certified ZumbaTM instructors; no previous dance experience necessary!

STRENGTH / CONDITIONING

Cardio Shape: Develop your strength, muscular definition and stamina through conditioning drills, calisthenics, cardio and strength all in one class!

Bodyweight (BW) Circuit: 25 minute circuit using nothing but your own bodyweight for resistance. Exercises are simple, yet effective, ways to improve balance, flexibility, and strength without machinery. Your body will get stronger with body resistance alone!

Burn 'n' Firm: Get your sweat on in this intense fat-burning, muscle firming workout! Combine cardio and weight training to become fit inside and out.

Circuit City: Box, pump and jam your way through different workout stations in this awesome circuit training class. Shown to burn more calories and firm-up muscles fast!

Exercise for Every 'Body': A workout for all shapes and sizes, from beginners to regulars looking for a challenge. Provides conditioning in areas of strength using various weights, bars and bands improving cardiovascular endurance and flexibility.

FAMILY FITNESS

These classes will feature two different fitness classes: ZumbaTM and Hatha Yoga, each with different instructors and very unique, age appropriate, and welcoming styles. Please view the individual class descriptions for more information on each style of fitness.

MIND / BODY

Atma Jyoti Meditation: A practice which activates the "Light" of your soul. Atma Meditation focuses on visualizing the flame in between the eyebrows. This meditation helps to strengthen your concentration, reduce your stress, heal your anxiety, and bring peace to your mind.

Hatha Yoga: Focuses on linking gentle postures (asanas) while concentrating on stilling the mind. Bring strength and stamina to your entire body while relieving stress. Great for beginners and continuing students.

Pilates Method: Non-impact exercises work the deep core abdominal muscles to help achieve efficient and graceful movement. Improve balance, posture, flexibility and body alignment.

Slow Flow - Restorative Yoga: For those seeking a quieter practice. Starting with the breath, followed by a sequence of slow, meditative postures and ending with restorative poses.

Allowing your body to be completely supported using props— promoting ease and relaxation. This practice goes beyond superficial muscles to your central nervous system.

Vinyasa Yoga: A moving meditation of asana (postures) and prana (breath). Moving with the prana helps us reconnect with ourselves—body, mind and spirit—so we may deepen the awareness of our strengths and boundaries.

Yoga Basics: Discover the centuries-old practice of posture and breathing started in India. Increase strength and flexibility while relieving stress and tension. An excellent way to learn to gauge and meet the ever-changing needs of mind and body.

ACTIVE AGING

Arthritis FX (Foundation Exercise) Age 60 & up: Learn the role movement plays in managing arthritis. Easy paces class covers range of motion, relaxation methods and special techniques.

Take measures now to relieve symptoms and maintain flexibility. Instructor certified through the Arthritis foundation.

Senior Fit: Chair and standing exercises designed to improve physical and mental health. Workout with hand weights and dynabands. Improve coordination, cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility and balance!

Tai Chi for Seniors: Incorporate slow, gentle movements that increase flexibility, balancing, and lung capacity. Promote stress relief, body awareness, suppleness in your spine and increased stamina.

Yoga in Chairs: Gently works muscles and joints to enhance strength, range of motion, balance, and circulation. Reaches beyond typical exercises as it encourages quiet reflection, proper breathing, and better posture.

EPCC SLCC PERSONAL TRAINING Tommy Thompson III Tommy is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor and also serves on the certification boards for both exam committees. He is certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as a Performance Enhancement Specialist and Mixed Martial Arts Conditioning Specialist and the American Council on Exercise (ACE) as a Certified Health Coach. Tommy graduated with a degree in Exercise and Movement Science as a level 2 Fitness Specialist from Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon back in 2013.

Terri Morse Terri is certified through the ISSA (International Sports Science Association) as a Personal Trainer. She has taught at many different clubs, hospitals and corporate settings, but feels that EPCC is her home and the best place she has been. Terri has fun teaching here because the people are warm and friendly and she is told that the fun she has teaching comes across and is shared by her students. She is always excited helping people achieve their fitness goals. Terri emphasizes core strength for balance, posture and health.

Iris Powell Iris is a certified Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She has a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health and is a PE teacher in Portland Public Schools. Iris believes that everyone can recognize their potential to live a healthy, fulfilling life. She enjoys working with everyone from older adults to younger students to those with special considerations. Most importantly, Iris wants everyone to gain the knowledge to utilize incredibly important, positive health behaviors so that they may live their lives at the highest level. Iris finds serenity in running and is often training for and competing in local road races.

Sara Brittan Sara is a certified Personal Trainer through ISSA and is currently certified in Exercise Therapy. She has been a part of the “fitness community” since she was a teenager. Because of her extensive background in fitness, she is able to design a program that is tailored to each individual’s goals. Sara enjoys working with clients and helping them feel strong, look their best and have fun getting there.

Sheryl Hassett Sheryl is a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor. She has been in the fitness industry for over 27 years as a Group Instructor, 18 years as a Personal Trainer and is ACE (American Council on Exercise) certified in both. She is also a Certified Senior Strength Trainer through the International Weightlifting Association. Sheryl continues to enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of helping others maintain a healthier lifestyle. With a history in running marathons and participating in organized road races, she now enjoys outdoor cycling, gardening and just being outside.

LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE: “Circle Swimming” is a necessity when more than two people are in a lane. Lane lines divide lap lanes, think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway, lap lanes may become crowded and at these times “circle swimming’ is a necessity.

Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmers’ speed; slow, medium and fast. Look at the yellow markers and the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane.

Must be comfortable in the deep water and be able to dive into the pool and swim front crawl for 50yds, swim back crawl for 50yds, and swim breaststroke for 50yds.

This class works towards swimming front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke all for 100yds, swim side stroke for 50yds, do a pike or tuck surface dive to 8ft, underwater swim for 20ft, surface and tread water for 5 minutes, long shallow dive and swim 100 yds individual medley, and compact jump and approach stroke 10yds with rescue tube.

POOL RENTALS

Private and semi-private pool rentals are scheduled after-hours on Saturdays and before/after hours on Sundays. The Poolside Room can be added for an offdeck space for refreshments.

Pool party packages are offered on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays, and take place during regular open swim hours. Pool parties include one hour in the party room and a minimum of one hour of swimming.

TEEN LESSONS Age 11-18 These classes are offered to participants from beginner to intermediate. Depending on your prior swimming ability, taking a “Teen Only Swim Lesson� once MAY or MAY NOT adequately prepare you for the swimming demands required in certification courses.

Don Beadling Don studied Music Theory and Composition at Portland Community College and has performed a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from metal, jazz, acoustic finger-style blues and bluegrass.

Peter Deley He has been active as a teacher and performer for over thirty years in the cities of Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Portland. He has a BFA in Music and Diploma in Education.

William Mehan William is a recording and performing artist—a multi-instrumentalist including strings, woodwinds, percussion and keys. He is a seasoned musician with interests and experience in all genres of music.

Class Structure: Warm-ups, hand techniques, forms, kicking drills, combinations and sparring. Advanced students demonstrate strength through the breaking of wood boards.

Uniforms are not required until time of the first test, purchased through the instructor.

Advanced Class: Students must have permission from Master Williams to register for this class. Class is taught by 3rd degree black belt instructor Mr. Good. This is an extra class for color and black belt students already registered for Master Williams' Monday and Thursday Traditional Tae Kwon Do class. Class format is more technical with a faster pace since there are no beginner students.

Youth Class: Taught by Anne Holm, 3rd degree black belt. Students develop better coordination, strength and flexibility with drills and sparring. Children in this program may graduate to the class taught by Shelby and Ron Williams, at age 8 yrs.

EAST PORTLAND COMMUNITY CENTER TAE KWON DO—CULLEN LOEFFLER | No Class: 1/21, 2/18, 3/18-30 Program: Korean martial art that uses kicks, blocks and strikes, similar to karate. This is a great opportunity to try out a new sport. Taught in a supportive but disciplined environment. Non-contact, non-competitive form of self-defense increases physical strength, coordination and agility, while building self-esteem, concentration and discipline. If you decide to stay with it, you can move up through the ranks in this program.

Testing: Belt promotion takes place the first Saturday of the month at Montavilla Community Center, 8219 NE Glisan. There is no testing fee, though new belts are $5 (basic uniform comes with white belt). Intermediate students have the option of attending tournaments, but it is not required.

Instructor: Cullen Loeffler is a 3rd degree black belt and has taught with PP&R for over 20 years Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothing; uniforms are not required. Uniforms can be purchased through the instructor.

Bring money for lunch at the Baldwin Saloon located in a historic property in downtown The Dalles, where everything is made from scratch, including pasta dishes. Bonneville Damn & Fish hatchery Today's adventures is a trip to the Washington side of Bonneville Dam and the Fish Hatchery! We will tour behind the scenes to watch for any salmon swimming upstream, after lunch we will go back to Oregon and tour around the fish hatchery to see how many different types of fish we can see. They are both practicing artists and creative consultants who met while earning MFAs from Portland State University’s Art and Social Practice program. In addition to being artists, they consider themselves educators, producers, writers, photographers, and storytellers, among other things. This unwieldy path has led them to become pretty good at facilitating dialogue that helps people better understand themselves, and each other. Both have created or produced many projects for, and with, senior citizens. They hold a deep commitment to social justice, which informs their art and life. With 51 community gardens located throughout the city, the Community Gardens program provides gardening opportunities, plus lifestyle benefits, residents in Portland. Developed and operated by volunteers and PP&R staff, this robust program offers individuals and families a place to grow their own healthy food. Plots are assigned to new gardeners for each summer season in February, March and April, and continue through June as plots are available. Plots are assigned on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Parks for New Portlanders (PNP) is a program initiated by PP&R to provide recreation opportunities for immigrant and refugee communities. PNP works with refugee and immigrant partners and city leaders to design culturally relevant programs, making sure services are welcoming to communities of color, new immigrants and refugees. With one in five Portlanders being foreign-born, addressing the needs of this new and diverse population is crucial as they transition to Portland’s community.

The program runs Portland World Cup Soccer, New Portlanders Cultural Celebration and Family Day and other culturally responsive activities.

Portland Parks Golf offers affordable, quality golf to Portland’s residents and visitors alike. Portland’s urban forest consists of 218,000 street trees, 1.2 million park trees, and innumerable private property trees. Urban Forestry is involved in managing or regulating all of these trees to differing degrees.

Urban Forestry staff issue permits for planting, pruning, and removal of all public and some private trees and are on call 24/7 to respond to tree emergencies in public rights of way.

REGISTRATION Receipt of full payment is required for registration, unless otherwise arranged. Please call if you receive a returned check or declined bank card notice, either of which void registration.

RESIDENT / NON-RESIDENT A resident is: • anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the city limits of Portland. At the discretion of a Community Center Director, proof of home address may be required.

Acceptable address verification may include a 1) drivers license, 2) Oregon ID card, 3) property tax statement, 4) utility bill or lease agreement with current home address.

• any child living within the school boundaries of the Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is attending a SUN Community School. Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident surcharge.

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a 40% surcharge. NR surcharges do not apply to drop-in activities. Non-residents who wish to register for PP&R activities may choose one of these options: • Pay the additional 40% NR fee.

• Purchase a NR fee discount pass as either an individual or family for a period of three, six or nine months from the date of purchase. The NR discount pass takes 25% off the NR fee for the activity. Inquire about this option at time of registration. These passes are not refundable.

CLASS ENROLLMENT Our classes must meet minimum and maximum enrollment standards. Classes may fill quickly or be canceled due to low enrollment.

WITHDRAWAL AND REFUNDS Please notify us at least five (5) business days (Monday-Friday), unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee. Pre-paid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded. Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made.

SCHOLARSHIPS City of Portland residents, regardless of age, who require financial assistance may apply for partial scholarships. Contact individual centers for information.

• Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

IMPORTANT DETAILS ABOUT INCLUSION SERVICES • A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same.

• Accommodations are made as needed and can be flexible, as well creative.

• Participants need to register for activities that are intended for their birth age.

• Personal care is provided for activities for individuals up to age 12.

• For sign language interpreter please call 2 working days prior to the class.

• We request at least 5 working days’ notice prior to start of class.

If you do not wish to be photographed, please inform staff and we will make reasonable efforts to honor your request. If you see staff taking pictures, and you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know.

If you see a photo of yourself or a family member that causes you concern, please notify us. As a courtesy, we will make every reasonable effort to dispose of the image, and will not use it in future publications. However, we will not be able to retrieve, destroy or discontinue existing printed publications in which the photograph may have been included.

INCLEMENT WEATHER If the City of Portland public school districts (Portland Public, Parkrose, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Centennial) are closed because of weather conditions, PP&R classes and youth basketball in those school districts may be canceled. We recommend that you check in with your community centers for the latest information about individual registered programs and activities. Some recreation programs may run as conditions and instructor availability allow. Decisions to operate on a specific site basis are made when it is determined that all programs may operate safely. Call the specific PP&R facility for information and opening/closing times.
