Using creations of these artists as a launching pad, students delve into melody, tempo, meter & dynamics by listening, playing instruments, & movement.

has been teaching young children for 30 years.

She has been at CMC for 25 years & Sojourner Elementary for 15. Shera uses the teaching philosophy called Orff Schulwerk, which gradually introduces elements of music while encouraging improvisation, play, creativity, & the joy of making music together. She enjoys connecting her activities to the changing seasons & the natural world that children are exploring.

Chamber Music & Orchestra Summer Program for ages 8-18

Chamber Groups

Play trios, quartets, or other works with string, wind, or piano students at your level! Refine ensemble skills & interpretive abilities through rehearsals & coaching.

Discover the thrill of musical teamwork & accomplishment. Prerequisite: at least 3 years of private lessons on instrument, sight-reading, playing in positions (strings) with vibrato. For intermediate and advanced players with good music reading skills. Groups assigned for two-hour slot within 9am to 1pm; schedule may vary from day to day & is confirmed two weeks before class begins.

Chamber parts available one week prior. Registration & payment required to schedule an audition. Required concert on Saturday, July 26 at 2PM. No refund unless not placed in a group. Violas and Cellists 20% off!

Violinists wishing to switch to viola welcome - instruments available! Make it a CAMP by also enrolling in the Chamber Orchestra (see below). Please bring a nutritious, peanut-free snack each day.

Chamber Music Auditions Call CMC to register & schedule an audition to assist us in creating the most compatible groups. For auditions, prepare a short piece or section of a work that best demonstrates your ability. Sight-reading is also assessed. Participants are notified about group assignment two weeks prior to the start of the class.

Note: We make every effort to place as many enrollees as possible, however due to limits of space & repertoire, it is sometimes not possible to find a group for everyone. In these instances, registration fees are refunded. Registration & payment is required to schedule an audition time.

Chamber Orchestra - Baroque Rules!

When are ‘fast’ notes played slowly, and ‘slow’ notes played quickly? Are all notes which look the same treated the same? Get into the minds of composers like Bach, Telemann & Vivaldi & discover new takes on old rules while playing masterpieces of the era. Prerequisite: at least 3 years of private lessons on instrument, sight-reading skills, playing in positions, and vibrato (Suzuki Book 4 for violinsts). Portland Parks & Recreation

Group Piano for Youth at CMC Group piano instruction at CMC follows a two-year sequential curriculum. Learning in a group setting is a fun way to introduce this fabulous instrument, while getting “hands on” experience, making new friends & gaining musical skills! All classes are held in our piano lab using digital pianos that simulate acoustic grands.  Sequential Classes – Piano Foundations Year 1 & 2, followed by Piano Laboratory. Foundations classes now are clearly labeled by term (1-1 is first year, first term).

Class titles change each term. Continuing students call the office for placement (823-3177).  Clear two-year course curriculum – Students are equally matched for a successful group class experience.

See the chart below for details. Piano Foundations use books in the Piano Adventures series (available at CMC).  Progress Review – With the instructor’s guidance & approval, a student may repeat a term or advance. Two weeks before the end of each term the instructor makes evaluations & forwards them to the office staff. The family will be notified only if a change is required.  Consistent Schedule – During the school year, students continue at the same day & time unless repeating a term or skipping ahead.  Recital Opportunities - Playing music is better enjoyed when shared! While not a requirement, these performances connect us with others & increase confidence.

the following information in mind: (1) The more availibility listed increases the chances of being placed.

(2) For young students, indicate the time the parent & student can attend together. Please provide all information requested on the form. Incomplete forms or those missing a signature will be returned - call the CMC office with any questions you have before submitting.

aWait patiently for a call from the office confirming a lesson time. This will occur about two weeks before lessons begin. aPay tuition at the time of registration. Once tuition is paid, the student is officially registered!

Suzuki vs. Traditional: which method should I choose?

String Lesson Program students at CMC have a choice of two distinct ways of studying their instrument in weekly lessons.

The age of the student, as well as how much the parent is able to attend lessons and work with the student at home will have a large part to play in making this choice.

Traditional (Teacher/Student) Method:

This is the classic one-to-one approach to learning an instrument. The string player will practice every day at home between lessons on assignments given by the instructor. Parent involvement is not required, however parents of young students are often encouraged by the instructor to assist the child in the practice room. Parent observation of lessons is usually optional (but is recommended under age 10). Parents do not have to be musically trained.

Teacher/Parent/Student method (Suzuki):

This is a family approach to music instruction that creates a “learning triangle� between teacher, parent & student. The parent, who does not need to have prior musical training, learns with the student & serves as the role model for the young player between lessons. Parents assist the student in their practice at home each day as assigned by the instructor.

When the student is not practicing the family listens to the recordings of the songs as much as possible to create the immersion that the method requires for the best learning experience. The goal is that music becomes like another language in the home. Parents are required to attend the Suzuki Parent Orientation class in September (see below) prior to placement with their first teacher.

Parent Orientation to Suzuki age: 18 & up Build harmonious connections at home! Discover the important dynamics of student, teacher & parent/ guardian in this method. Observe demonstrations, get insightful information & find the confidence needed to help beginning violin viola & cello students succeed. This class is required for placement with a Suzuki instructor.

CMC has a limited number of violins, violas, cellos & guitars available for enrolled students to rent.

Rental cost is $50 per term, with first term payment due at time of rental. Scholarships are available.

Rental process 1. Call the CMC office (503-823-3177) to get on a waitlist for an instrument. This should be done even if you are not yet confirmed for private lessons (youth), or if you are on a group class wait list (adults). Youth private lesson students may get on the wait list by checking the appropriate box on the Pre-registration Form (page 19).

2. Once payment arrangements are made for private lessons/group class, set a fitting appointment with the instrument rental coordinator.

3. Meet with the rental coordinator. You’ll complete a rental agreement, make payment & receive your instrument (if your size is available). If none is available for your size, you may choose to remain on the waiting list.

Preference is given to scholarship students, then youth, & then adults.

Portland Parks & Recreation Private Lesson Program Policy Information - String, Winds, Brass & Voice CMC’s Private Lesson Program for Youth

strives to provide the highest quality music education to as many dedicated students as possible, regardless of the ability to pay. In a continuing effort to achieve these goals, students & parents should seriously consider the following requirements before committing to take lessons at CMC.

For Registration Process, see Page 15 Practice Requirements It is important that students take lessons seriously, practice every day (at least as long as their lesson length), complete any homework assigned by instructors & progress in-step with their ability to learn.

Students not progressing in-step with their ability to learn will receive instruction on how to improve practice habits.

If no progress is made, CMC will require the student & parent to sign an agreement on how to improve practice.

Musicianship Requirement - Strings only *Applies to School Year Lessons* The CMC String Program for Youth is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster wellrounded musicians. To this end, CMC makes the following requirements for students taking lessons September - June:  Beginning string students age 5 and up are required to concurrently enroll in, attend regularly & do satisfactory work in a Music Skills class (see School Year catalog for information, or inquire at the office). Other Unavoidable Causes - CMC is notified at least one week before the scheduled lesson time. This allows time to notify the teacher and make necessary schedule changes.  Unexcused Absence: Any cause not listed above. No credits or make-ups will be offered for Unexcused Absences.

NOTE: A student may be dropped for two Unexcused Absences a term, three Excused Absences in a row, or four Excused Absences during a term.

Because space is limited, a student may be dropped from the program if any of the above requirements are not met.

Withdrawal Policy Once accepted, the lesson time is reserved for your child through Summer term. CMC understands that extenuating circumstances arise & occasionally a student must withdraw before summer ends. Because of the effort it takes to set up teacher schedules, CMC’s withdrawal policy for private lessons is as follows: Notify the CMC office one full week before the next lesson & a refund of paid fees will be issued for the remaining lessons in the term. Private Lesson Program for Youth – Program Requirements CMC's Private Lesson Program for Youth strives to provide the highest-quality music education to as many dedicated students as possible, regardless of ability to pay. To this end, CMC makes the following requirements, which parents & students should carefully consider before committing to lessons at CMC. 1. Practice Requirements Students should practice daily for at least as much time as their lesson length, complete any homework assigned by instructors, & progress in keeping with their ability to learn.

NOTE: Students who fail to progress to the best of their ability will receive instruction on how to improve practice habits. If progress is still not made, CMC will require the student & parent to sign and fulfill a practice-improvement agreement.

2. Musicianship Requirements Only for String students during School Year - Waived Summer Term The CMC String program is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster well-rounded musicians.

• Beginning string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in Basic Skills, On My Way With Basic Skills, Skills I, or Theory & Practice. Four-year-olds are excused from this requirement, but are encouraged to take Launch Pad to Learning Music or Basic Skills, & are required to take Skills at age 5. String Program students may take these courses at a reduced fee ($15 in 2013-14).

• Continuing string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in an appropriate Skills class, Orchestra, Choir, Voice, Piano, Guitar, Suzuki Group Class, or Chamber Music (fees vary; see school year catalog or ask the office about prerequisites, special requirements, schedules & pricing).

• The musicianship requirement may be satisfied if the student is receiving comparable training elsewhere. This must be documented with an Exemption Form. See the CMC office for details.

• Students who begin in Summer become subject to the musicianship requirement upon enrolling for Fall Term.

Portland Parks & Recreation recognizes that some residents of the City of Portland require lower tuition to attend certain recreational activities. CMC has its own scholarship process, as tuition subsidy is provided by a non-profit fundraising organization through generous donations.

Portland Parks & Recreation About the Community Music Center About the Community Music Center (CMC) CMC is a program of PP&R in partnership with the nonprofit Community Music Center, Inc. It has been a popular place for music lessons and concerts in Portland since 1955, and is now one of several PP&R sites offering music instruction. It is also part of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

About the non-profit organization Community Music Center, Inc. Non-profit partner at the Community Music Center, CMC Inc. is an all-volunteer organization that raises money year-round to increase access to music education through need-based scholarships & tuition subsidy, instrument rentals to students, free or low-cost concerts, and more. CMC Inc. was founded in 1960 by a group of parents and interested citizens to help maintain the Center as a City facility, providing scholarship assistance and tuition subsidy through year-round fundraising. Registration Information Registration: Receipt of full payment is required for registration, unless otherwise arranged. Returned checks & declined bank cards void registration.

Resident / Non-Residents / definitions: A resident is: • anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the city limits of Portland. At the discretion of a Community Center Director, proof of home address may be required.

Acceptable address verification may include a 1) drivers license, 2) Oregon ID card, 3) property tax statement, 4) utility bill or lease agreement with current home address.

• any child living within the school boundaries of the Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is attending a SUN Community School. Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident surcharge.

Special Needs: Within the American with Disability Act (ADA), a person with a disability or special need who desires assistance with registration and/or participation in general PP&R programs can contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328 V/TTY. If you request assistance through Inclusion Services, a minimum of 10 business days (MondayFriday) advance notice is required.

If you need a sign language interpreter or FM loop amplifier, please contact 503-823-4328 V/TTY, at least five business days in advance of the activity or class. Information about programs and services is available online for those needing a voice synthesis; visit our website at www.PortlandParks.org.

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a 40% surcharge. NR surcharges do not apply to drop-in activities. The Non-Resident Pass is not available Summer 2014. Contact individual community centers for more information.

Scholarships: City of Portland residents, & in some

cases, non-residents, regardless of age, who require financial assistance may apply for partial scholarships. Contact individual centers for information.

Withdrawal & Refunds: Please notify us at least

three business (Monday-Friday) days, unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee. Pre-paid materials & admission tickets cannot be refunded. Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made (CMC requires 24 hours notice for group classes, one week for private lessons).

Customer Satisfaction: Your Satisfaction is Our Goal. Portland Parks & Recreation strives for 100% customer satisfaction. If you are not satisfied with a recreation program or service let us know.

Photo policy: Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) reserves the right, and may give permission to the media, to photograph classes, programs, and participants at any of our facilities and properties or any sponsored activity. Please be aware that these photos are for promotional purposes and may be used in future publications and media communications in any format.

If you do not wish to be photographed, please inform staff and we will make reasonable efforts to honor your request.

If you see staff taking pictures, and you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know.

If you see a photo of yourself or a family member that causes you concern, please notify us. As a courtesy, we will make every reasonable effort to dispose of the image, and will not use it in future publications. However, we will not be able to retrieve, destroy or discontinue existing printed publications in which the photograph may have been included.

Class Enrollment: Our classes must meet minimum

& maximum enrollment standards. Classes may fill quickly or classes may be canceled due to low enrollment.

CMC’s office is located at 3350 SE Francis St, 1 block south of Powell Blvd & is open for walk-in registration Monday-Friday.
