Spring Break Explorations at Leach Botanical Garden Volcanic Bombs and Erratic Cobbles:

Leach Garden Geology Camp Cobbles carried in the Missoula Floods rest on Leach Garden’s creek bank, and a volcanic bomb from the Boring Lava Fields turned up in the meadow. Learn to read the geological landscape with Dr. Michael L. Cummings. He’ll teach you how to use topographical maps, levels, soil probes, compasses and LIDAR to collect and record information, while also sharpening your observation skills. Using your data, you’ll create a map of Leach Garden’s geology. When camp is over, you’ll see geological stories everywhere!

Dr. Cummings is an Emeritus Professor at Portland State University. He enjoys working with kids, using a hands-on, accessible approach to science that creates interest and enthusiasm.

Influenced by traditional Yoga, this class addresses coordination, balance, and flexibility. Participants also learn basic breathing and meditation techniques to handle stress and promote relaxation. Pilates Mat Pilates exercises have long been renowned for producing long, lean physiques. Exercises focus on the body’s core muscles (abs and back) and are gentle in nature. Restorative Yoga Freedom of movement is directly related to the ability to relax muscles. When muscles are not able to relax, this resorts in unnecessary pressure on the joints. Through breathing work and gentle stretching, it’s possible to create more comfortable movement. Tai Chi More than 600 years ago this martial art evolved in China as healers searched for a source of physical immortality. Incorporate slow, gentle movements that increase flexibility, balancing and lung capacity. Promote stress relief, body awareness, suppleness in your spine and increased stamina.

PERSONAL TRAINERS Diallo Chambers Growing up in the Northwest, fitness has always been an essential part of my life. Developing a skill and passion for exercise that became a quick lifestyle. A wise person once said do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. It is my goal to spend my life through service. Providing a service to help others reach their physical and nutritional goals. Jutta Reichardt Philosophy: Each day is an opportunity for change and improvement. We make choices that affect our mental and physical well being that define who we are. Making health a priority, creating time for fitness, lets us achieve our goals, step by step. Time spent on self-improvement reflects in our relationships, grounds us and sustains our spirit. I enjoy working with a variety of people at any age or fitness level. Whether you want to be at the gym on a regular basis, or you need a program you can do at home, I’ll be dedicated to helping you achieve a healthy, fit lifestyle and become your personal best. Sara Brittan Fitness has always been a part of my life. It began with my mom taking me every day to our local YMCA to watch her participate in fitness classes. It later evolved to me participating myself to becoming a fitness instructor. At a young age I began to teach step-aerobics, cardio-kickboxing , and spinning. I later took fitness to another level and became a certified personal trainer through ISSA as well as a certification in exercise therapy. Fitness is my passion and my way of life. I enjoy working with people of all levels and helping others feel and look their best.

Nature Day Camp Volunteer - Jr. Naturalist

Age 13-17 Responsible, patient teens who have experience working with children and enjoy nature are encouraged to apply to be a volunteer Jr. Naturalist with Nature Day Camp (ages 13-17) or the Rockin' Robins Preschool Camp (ages 15-17 preferred). The Jr. Naturalist program requires two days of training at Mt. Tabor Park (June 26 and 28 or June 27 and 29). Teens will be trained in child development, communication skills, role-modeling, and instruction techniques. Jr. Naturalists work directly with the children – supervised by paid staff – and are given opportunities to develop teaching, leadership, and group facilitation skills. Teens accepted into the program must volunteer for at least two (but not more than four) weeks.
