June 16, 2023 The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit agreed with the plaintiffs, Maine Lobstermen’s Association, and plaintiff-intervenors the Maine Department of Marine Resources, The Maine Lobstering Union, and the Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association, ruling that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) distorted the science driving the rejection to protect the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, relying improperly on assumptions and worst-case scenarios when determining the risk posed by the lobster industry. The court overturned the Biological Opinion in which NMFS analyzes the risk posed, and requires NMFS to develop a new one. LINDABEANSMAINELOBSTER.COM

Catch a Rising Star

In 1993, I jotted the words “good writer” on the new card I’d just inserted into my Rolodex. (Not a metaphor.) What an understatement! I’d just accepted a short story from Sebastian Junger. Four years later, his marvelous thriller The Perfect Storm crested at No. 1 on the bestseller list. George Clooney starred in the movie.

Last week I had an email exchange with Junger, discussing old times. “Hi, Colin. Yes, indeed, I think that probably would have been my first published short story. Thirty years to the month. Amazing. How funny. I’d completely forgotten about that...Thank you!”

Catch the wave.

Last week we also heard from one of our early columnists, Rick Barton. Properly addressed, he’s Ambassador Frederick D. Barton, former U.S. Representative to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Not only does he remember his roots, he keeps in touch! Thank you, Rick.

How proud we all were when our first intern, Hannah Holmes, rocketed up the bestseller list with The Secret Life of Dust. Prize-winning author Gwen Thompson (Men Beware Women) is still on our masthead after nearly 30 years. Memoirist Mira Ptacin was an intern with us in 2004 (see our interview “Through the Looking Glass” in this issue.

As we sail toward the 40-year mark, we’ve confirmed that we’re the first magazine to publish short stories by many legends, including Joan Connor, National AWP winner in fiction (History Lessons); Morgan Callan Rogers (Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea); and Jason Brown (Driving the Heart). Brenda Sparks Prescott dazzles her audience with her Home Front Lines: “The most rewarding experience I can think of was the first time I had a piece of fiction accepted for publication years ago. Colin Sargent, of Maine’s Portland Magazine, accepted a very short piece and paid me for it—a rarity in the fiction world, and certainly for an unknown author. They also commissioned an artist to paint an illustration for the story. He offered two choices to the magazine, and they wound up publishing both. I was so elated to think that another artist had been in conversation with my work that I bought both paintings.”

Celebrated author and screenwriter Dan Domench, with a unique knack for an edgy quip, has published nearly 100 stories with us—for five decades running!

This magazine is people, not just pages. Sure, we’re quixotic. We’re a dream, not a Ponzi scheme. We’ve always proudly worn the label “quirky” bestowed upon us by Mediabistro, along with “beyond the usual city-magazine fare.” They caught us at it, and we’re catching you on the beach, in the library, at the airport, and at coffee shops across the universe—any spot where you have a chance to take a breath. No electricity needed—it’s already built in. And to all the writers, artists, and photographers we’ve had the honor to work with over the years, we’d like to hear from you too. In this issue, catch some great new fiction by Jason Brown.

...I was away late April into early May on my 14th tour of New Zealand (twelve recitals). I had a recital at the Weston, MA, Public Library on May 14th, then flew to Germany to join Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 in Hamburg for a transatlantic crossing to New York May 16–26 via Southampton and Le Havre in France, playing three recitals on board.

I’m leaving this Saturday on my seventh tour of Alaska, playing recitals in Talkeetna, Palmer, Nome, Petersburg, and Wrangell. I will also conduct master classes for local piano students and teachers in Palmer and Nome.

In July, I have recitals in Livonia, MI, and at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, CA. In late August, I’ll play four recitals in Britain, followed by my 23rd Australian tour, with fifteen recitals.

INTERVIEW BY COLIN W. SARGENT

MARC MONTOCCHIO AND SAIL WHEN AND IF. LEGENDS
The Captain of Her Heart
1912

What are WhenandIf ’s origins?

She was commissioned by then Colonel George S. Patton and his wife, Beatrice, in 1939. Designed by world-renowned naval architect John Alden, she was built by F. F. Pendleton Boatyard in Wiscasset, on White’s Island. She was one of the shipyard’s largest yachts, and nearly one of the last. The island is vacant now, but the railway where she splashed down to launch is still there.

Did WhenandIfhave to go through a screen test to earn

her part in TheMarvelousMrs.Maisel?

Amazon Prime approached us with a contract when we were docked in Key West. The day before that, Jeff Bezos and his new girlfriend at the time [now fiancée Lauren Sánchez] walked the floating dock where we were and checked us out. I have eyewitness accounts. When and If appears a number of times in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in Season 3, Episode 6.

Not to mention, I just saw this Maine girl up in lights at the top of the Tommy Bahama website!

We’ve also done Ralph Lauren and [the website for the Italian fashion house] Etro. She’s a very photogenic boat. We keep the varnish and paint tip-top. We never know when there’ll be a call for a shooting.

Please describe WhenandIf ’s sailing characteristics. My personal take is she’s a very stout, very seaworthy, comfortable ship. She can handle the wild weather, but she can still be a wet and wild ride. The Alden has a special feel to it. Very sea-kindly. Unbreakable. It’s the people who might not be able to handle the voyage as well as the boat. She’s beamier than, say, a Herreshoff might be, and she has more sheer. She’s not a submarine. She prefers to have the wind ahead of the beam.

What kind of sailor was General Patton?

I think his interests drew him toward reading the weather and navigating. He was fascinated with all that. He loved celestial navigation, dead reckoning. He understood

sailing, but the natural sailor was probably his wife, Beatrice.

Ah, so shewas the romantic.

They did most of their sailing in the Gloucester, Massachusetts, region, Manchester-bythe-Sea. They sailed through Cape Cod Canal (General Patton’s log entries still exist) and even into Chesapeake Bay. The Pattons lived in Hamilton, Massachusetts, a North Shore town. The Patton Homestead still stands and is maintained by the Wenham Museum. In the office they have a little shrine to the When and If. Among the exhibits is Beatrice Patton’s sweater, black with gold letters. You can see her aboard in a great historic video sail [https:// www.youtube. com/watch?v=DLHpjI9axwc].

Let’s feel it through her heart. What’s it like at the helm of WhenandIf at night?

At night, under a sweep of stars, when you’re sailing along nicely, wind at sea, there’s no better feeling. You’re an explorer. It’s magical.

What’s the biggest storm When and If has sailed through?

The Nor’easter portion of “The Perfect Storm.”

You mean she left port to brave the storm so she wouldn’t get smashed against her dock, the way the Navy destroyers do?

She was at a mooring. The line didn’t actually part, but it slipped off the bit. She was blown into the rocks and speared a big boulder on her port side amidships at high tide in storm surge. At low tide, she was left on the rocks.

So she’s had a little work done. Yes, at Gannon & Benjamin on Martha’s Vineyard in the 1990s after the storm. The second was at Cayuga Wooden Boatworks [in upstate New York], conducted by Doug Hazlitt and team in 2012. I was part of the team as captain. We hauled out of Cayuga Lake in New York, replaced some timbers, put a new teak deck on her, and pulled out all the wiring and rewired her.

What do most people misunderstand about WhenandIf? Some people ask, “Why’s the steering wheel on backwards?” [On 21st-century yachts the helmsman stands behind the wheel, facing the bow. On this schooner, the

helmsman stands to the side of the wheel in the ancient-mariner style.]

Do they ask, “Why is she called the WhenandIfinstead of the IfandWhen?” One story is that in 1939 Patton said something like, whenthiswar’soverandifIsurvive—knowing another world war was a certainty—that he and Beatrice would celebrate by sailing the world together.

I’ve heard a different explanation: Patton himself had undiagnosed dyslexia. I’ve heard it directly from his family. Perhaps he meant if and when!

When did you first set eyes on the WhenandIf?

I saw her sailing on Eggemoggin Reach when I was 16. I fell in love with the lines of the boat. I kept seeing her after that, dazzling glimpses of her here and there, in place after place. I’ve always wanted to be part of When and If ’s stories. I convinced her owner before me, Doug Hazlitt, to buy her. He made me captain in 2012.

You saw her from the mainland that early on? So you must have a big Maine connection. I have lots of connections to Penobscot Bay. I’ve spent summers and winters in Maine from age 14 to 22, based out of Brooklin. I worked in Rockport and Camden on the Timberwind from age 14. At 16 I was first mate.

When and If is homeported in Salem, Massachusetts, but we generally come to Maine at least once a year. We’ll be up in Boothbay for Windjammer Days this summer. [Stay tuned for another possible stop...]

What’s your favorite libation to toast with aboard WhenandIf, and how can I get hold

Yacht Super

Spotting

Our summer sightings in Portland, Maine.

BOUCHON

Length: 150 feet. Max speed: 20 knots. Bouchon, French for “cork,” is named for Charles R. “Cork” Walgreen III, the former CEO and Chairman of Walgreens and the late husband of the yacht’s current owner, Kathleen Walgreen. Kathleen has mostly stayed out of the news, but following the death of their son, Tad, in 1996, she and her husband fought a vicious custody battle over their grandchildren against their daughter-in-law, Loren. Built by American shipyard Trinity Yachts in 2002 and refitted in 2017, the Bouchon is built with a semi-displacement hull that makes it extra seaworthy and allows it to move through the water at exceptional speeds.

We’ll just look out and go ‘Oh, there’s a big one!’” yacht spotter Jill Blackwood says.

“We keep a camera on our dining room table at all times.” From her home in South Portland with its expansive view of the channel between Portland Head Light and Ram Island Ledge Light, nothing coming in or out of Portland Harbor escapes Blackwood. Some of her highlights from this year? The 241-foot Sherpa “because it actually goes on expeditions,” and the sailing yacht Anne. “It’s impossible to appreciate how tall the mast is until you see it. I mean, the mast is taller than the lighthouses as it passes them!”

ANNE

Length: 172 feet.

Designed by Andre Hoek in 2007 and built by Dutch company Vitters in 2009, the Anne is ranked as the 46th largest sailing yacht in the world by Culturamarinara.com. The mysterious new owner who purchased her as Erica XII from Swedish education billionaire Bertil Hult in 2018 has managed to keep their identity a secret for over five years. Meanwhile, the Anne has been spotted all over the globe, sailing with Blue Too in Stockholm in 2018, weathering a ferocious storm in Cape Town in 2020, and spectating the St.Barths Bucket Regatta this spring.

SHERPA

Length: 241 feet. Max speed: 15.7 knots. With a unique, expedition-style design, the Sherpa was custom built in 2018 by the Dutch company Feadship for Sir James Ratcliffe, the second wealthiest individual in the UK, with a net worth of £29 billion. Ratcliffe, the founder and CEO of INEOS Chemicals Group, is a passionate sportsman and adventurer who has skied to the North and South Poles, ran the 56-mile Comrades Ultra Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in 2013, and is currently in talks to purchase Manchester United F.C. According to Feadship’s website, the Sherpa [italics] was specifically designed to support Ratcliffe’s adventurous lifestyle with “all kinds of transportation and logistics options available as he embarks on his adventures in different parts of the world,” including an icy voyage through the Northwest Passage in 2019.

Naftali, the New York City real-estate tycoon known for renovating the iconic Plaza Hotel, had the yacht custom built by Italian company Baglietto after being dissatisfied with previous boat purchases. AQUARIUS

Length: 154 feet. Max speed: 13.5 knots. “I’m more of a classic guy. I like the wood interiors of the Aquarius and especially the way her sheerline rises up towards the bow, which you don’t see on the more modern boats,” owner Udo J. Vetter told Yachtsinternational.com. Vetter, a German pharmaceuticals executive, bought the Aquarius in 2016 with globe-trotting dreams. Launched in 1990 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi, the yacht has a steel hull that’s easier to repair in faraway places than aluminum or other materials. After undergoing six months of upgrades and participating in the Perini Navi Cup in Sardinia, the Aquarius began a circumnavigation of the world in 2019.

CARSON

Length: 149 feet. Max speed: 12 knots. Owned by Randy Ringhaver, the chairman and CEO of Ring Power Corporation, a Florida-based Caterpillar dealer, the Carson was built by Newcastle Marine at a shipyard in Palatka, Florida, in 2015. The interior, however, was designed by Hodgdon Yachts of East Boothbay, located on the Damariscotta River. One of Maine’s oldest shipbuilding companies, Hodgdon has been building everything from schooners to military vessels to superyachts since 1816. The schooner Bowdoin, built by Hodgdon in 1921 for explorer Donald MacMillan, has made 29 trips above the Arctic Circle, and is now owned by the Maine Maritime Academy.

Through the Looking Glass

Ghostwriter Mira Ptacin dares to camp with ghosts.

Camp Etna is a mystical Spiritualist community in Etna, Maine, that since 1876 has played host to generations of psychics and mediums dedicated to preserving the links between the mortal realm and the afterlife. To wit, Camp Etna is an intentional community for those who believe in communication with the afterlife and dedicate a significant amount of their time to exploring their relationship with life after death.

How did you find out about the camp?

A good friend of mine told me about a special camp where people talk to the dead. I made a road trip up to Camp Etna soon after that with my husband and son, and after ten minutes I knew that this was what I wanted to

dedicate my writing to.

What made you decide you wanted to write a book about the camp?

The initial hook for me was that this is a collective of women who believe they can communicate with the dead. But after that thrill wore off, what kept me so interested and mystified was that Camp Etna was home to a group of people—mostly women—who lived according to their intuition rather than putting their gut instincts aside and becoming cogs in the wheel of a patriarchal capitalist society. What kind of person does this? What kind of life do they lead? What can we learn from them?

Were you a skeptic or a firm believer initially?

I was never a full-on skeptic. I wanted to believe from the start; I wanted to see what they

saw. I told one of the mediums this during an interview where, for her, a spirit appeared. “I just want to see what you see! Why can’t I just see what you see?” is what I said. Her response was, “Be careful what you wish for.” I believe in the women and men of Camp Etna. And I did witness an event that was undeniably otherworldly. [A fellow classmate was visited by one of the author’s ancestors who offered support during a challenging time.] The book is written chronologically, and as luck would have it, the big event came during my last few minutes at Camp Etna.

What was your most memorable moment at the camp?

The most memorable moments were spent getting to know the mediums, developing relationships, and learning about their lives as women, mothers, and careworkers. They are women who run with the wolves, and I

learned a lot about myself as a woman and mother by quietly observing and juxtaposing my world with theirs.

What do you hope you conveyed about the camp in your book?

My hope is that readers will trust themselves more and listen to their quiet inner voice rather than conform. My hope is that the book invites the reader to be a more curious person.

Was there a practice or a healer/medium that resonated with you the most?

Dr. Barbara Williams and I have become quite close. We text frequently, we say “I love you,” and she gives great life advice still. She’s a special woman.

Do you have any intention of writing more stories about Maine?

Yes! I’m currently working on a book project in which I turn inward and examine my own home life, rather than writing

about other communities, although the theme of this memoir is the importance of community-centered living, as opposed to self-appointed silos of self-importance.

What made you decide to move to Peaks Island?

We moved here about twelve years ago from Brooklyn, New York, because we wanted to slow down. We wanted a quieter lifestyle, to live closer to nature, and to be able to afford the cost of living. Although nowadays in Portland, the third option is essentially unattainable.

Were there any camp rules?

The camp rules were essentially the Golden Rule: Do unto others. The only other rule

was that if you wanted to own a cottage at Camp, you had to be a member of the Spiritualist church.

Were there séances at the camp? Please describe.

Many! But rather than séances, the mediums gave individual readings, and some did “table tippings,” in which they used a four-legged wooden table as a device through which to receive messages from the dead. We’d place our hands on the table, and it would move according to “spirit,” tipping to one side to answer yes or no questions.

There is something ‘other’ about water. Did any spiritual experiences happen in the lake, or was the sense of being in another element ever discussed?

I don’t have a great answer for your water question. Though people were welcome to take dips in the lake, the majority of the events took place up at camp, which was a short hike away from the water. Near the water, however, were railroad tracks—remnants of the stop that used to be there, where thousands upon

pinch of sugar. A dash of cinnamon. A swirl of vanilla. And a knockout sprinkle of indica. Cannabis can take on many forms. We dare you to take a taste.

BLAZIN’ BAKERY

In a border state like Maine, it’s a race to create more Franco-American baked goods.

“My mom was quite the baker,” says Cameron Boucher of Medible Delights in Lewiston. “She grew up in a French household. The whole company structure, working with family, really feels like home. It’s what keeps us going. Our whole cooking style is really French. That doesn’t just mean we use a lot of butter. Like our caramels—it’s a family recipe.”

Some of Boucher’s favorite new treats are based on goodies “I remember from my childhood. I grew up eating chocolate-dipped pretzel rods—non-dosed, of course—that Mom would make around Christmas. And now they’re 25 mg edibles.”

Medible Delight’s custom orders give them a Maine edge in the edibles market. “What we do here you can’t do in some other states,” Boucher says. “A customer wants a 500 mg birthday cake? We can do that!”

ETHICAL EDIBLES

“You know, it always struck me [that] indoor cannabis is not environmentally sound,” says Damon Holman of Wind Hill Growers in Fayette. “I know I’ll ruffle some feathers saying that.” Under the hashtag #SociallyConsciousCannabis, Holman and his wife, Sonja Beeker, concoct edibles using sun-grown cannabis from their hilltop farm in western Maine. “We grow organically, we’re single source.”

Holman, a lifelong Mainer, “grew up on an organic farm helping my family produce all of our own food. We tapped maple trees and boiled syrup. So I have a lot of background in higher quality food.

“I’ve been making chocolate since I was a kid. I always made truffles on Christmas for my family.” Today, he and Beeker dazzle customers with an array of gourmet Belgian chocolate bars, as well as grain-free, vegan “Coconutties” and signature bonbons (European-style hard candies).

Wind Hill also sells cannabis-infused coconut oil, maple syrup, and EVOO, inspiring customers to create their own homemade edibles. “We love these products ourselves. We’re big home cooks.”

CANNABIS COCKTAILS

Chef Zack Squier knew he’d struck gold when he first released a cannabis-infused cocktail recipe. “The emails and DMs were pouring in, and that’s when the light bulb went on. I was like, oh, man, there might be something to these drink mixers!”

Portland-based Squier’s Specialty Edibles now boasts a mouth-watering menu of mixers, headlined by the crowd favorite Blueberry Lemon Drink Mixer. “We’re making everything from scratch, with 100 percent real fruit,” Squier says. “We start with 200 pounds of Maine blueberries, fresh lemons, organic blue agave, solventless hash, and that’s it.

“We want to put just as much care into the food ingredients as the growers and extractors put into actually growing the cannabis. People take a beautiful product that someone spent months growing and extracting, then just put in food coloring and artificial flavors. Why would you do that?” n

LOBSTER POUNDINGS

TRUE STORY

When I was nine years old in 1960, I spent most of my summer trying to catch a lobster on a handline baited with clams. After several weeks of frustrating near misses, I finally managed to land the beast. Was it a “short”? All I know is that my mom cooked it and I ate it for dinner.

—Tim Sample

SPEED DATING

In the 2015 dystopian movie The Lobster, the main character, David (Colin Farrell), loses his wife to another man and is sent to a hotel where he has forty-five days to find another partner. If not? He’ll be turned into an animal of his own choosing, which is—you guessed it—a lobster.

BUTTERFLY EFFECT

The origin story of the 1978 hit song “Rock Lobster” by the B-52’s takes place not in Maine, but in Georgia. Band member Rick Schneider told People in a 2018 interview:

“I went to this disco in Atlanta called 2001 and they had no money for a light show I guess, so they had slides of puppies and babies and hot dogs and lobsters on a grill. And I thought, ‘Rock lobster! Rock

this, rock that, rock lobster!’” In his last interview, three days before he was murdered on December 8, 1980, John Lennon told Rolling Stone that “Rock Lobster” inspired him to start recording music again after a five-year hiatus. “I was at a dance club one night in Bermuda. Upstairs, they were playing disco, and downstairs I suddenly heard ‘Rock Lobster’ by the B-52’s for the first time...It sounds just like Yoko’s music, so I said to meself, ‘It’s time to get out the old ax and wake the wife up!’”

SEEING GREEN

My friend Dick told me a story about some people who ordered lobsters and had them shipped by plane. But when the lobsters arrived, they were green, not red, so, thinking that they were spoiled, the people threw them away.

“SHE’S YOUR LOBSTER!”

In the second season of Friends, Phoebe reas-

A man ordered lobster for dinner When it arrived, he complained to the waiter, “Hey, this lobster only has one claw!”

The waiter explained, “That lobster was in a fight.”

“OK, then,” replied the man. “Bring me the winner!”

How much salt do lobsters use when cooking pasta? Just a pinch.

A tourist pulled over at a roadside stand advertising “Lobster Tails, $5” and counted out five singles. The kid in charge of the stand pocketed the money and began, “Once upon a time, there was this lobster...”

sures Ross that Rachel is his ‘lobster,’ because “It’s a known fact that lobsters fall in love and mate for life. You can actually see old lobster couples walking around their tank hold-

ing claws.” While Phoebe’s pronouncements aren’t known for scientific accuracy, if you take a peek in the next lobster tank you see, you just might catch a glimpse of lobster love.

LOBSTERS ON THE LOOSE

In his 1977 comedy Annie Hall, Woody Allen’s character, Alvy, races around the kitchen hiding from half a dozen live lobsters and his teasing girlfriend. As Annie holds one up in front of his face, he says, “Talk to him—you speak shellfish!”

LADY IN THE LOBSTER

For some, breaking open lobster shells isn’t just a hassle—it’s a treasure hunt for the small piece of cartilage resembling a woman with long, flowing hair that’s located just above the lobster’s stomach. One Massachusetts family even wrote a fable about her entitled “Ye Olde Legend of the Lady in the Lobster.” Actor and Portland native Victoria Rowell remembers it as “the Virgin Mary story, introduced to me in Boston in the 1970s!”

SURREALIST SHELLFISH

Salvador Dali seemed to have a special love for lobsters. His most well-known lobster creation is Aphrodisiac Telephone, a rotary phone with a lobster-shaped handset, and he collaborated with Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli to create a lobster dress included in Wallis Simpson’s trousseau for her marriage to the former King Edward VIII. Dali was especially interested in lobster’s erotic qualities, covering the genitalia of semi-nude live models with them at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

GUACA-TOMALLEY

A NARROW ESCAPE

They’re like armored spiders—it’s terrible. My dad bought some live when I was a kid and released them so they could chase me around the kitchen.

Did you see the lobster protesters from California marching at the lobster festival in Rockland? The next day I saw a protester eating a hamburger in McDonald’s, which puzzled me until someone explained that they really don’t contain enough meat to count.

INTRODUCING

Kombucha Krawl

Kourtney Kardashian isn’t the only one to get her kicks with this trendy drink. Here’s where they’re serving it in Portland.

Beer’s not the only thing brewing in town. Gut-sensitive hipsters of the 21st century will be relieved to find two kombucha breweries based in the East End. This fermented drink made of tea, sugar, yeast, and ‘good’ bacteria is often sought out for its health benefits because it contains antioxidants and probiotics. This ancient Chinese drink derives its power from a double fermentation process started by a SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast). But the jury’s still out on any benefit claims. For some, kombucha itself is hard to

swallow. For others, it’s delicious.

THE TWO PILLARS

Root Wild Kombucha is situated on the corner of Washington Avenue, known for its curiously tricky left-hand turn. Usually the food truck of the week (the day we visited, it was Black Salt) is waiting for the hungry in

the parking lot. Portland Pottery across the street tempts with its cream-cheese-

filled everything biscuits. As always, the tables outside are full, and the vibes inside are always groovy. No wonder local markets (like Rosemont Market & Bakery) carry Root Wild brew on their shelves. Bring your ID; unlike Whole Foods, Rosemont does card you to buy kombucha.

The menu has five main flavors in cans: Ginger Cleanse, Wild Blueberry Boost, Vanilla Rooibos, Mint Refresh, and Grapefruit Shine. On draft they have more intense flavors like Beach Rose, Pine & Lavender, and Pineapple Jalapeno. If the traditional brewery is what you’re in the mood for, there’s hard kombucha on draft: Purple Waves and Secret Grove.

WORLD OF FLAVORS

Maybe Kombucha is what you bring to it. As we sip the Spiced Apple Kombucha, full of chaga and chai spices, we can’t help but be reminded of the crisp, cool fall evenings Maine is famous for. Suddenly the leaves are changing colors, and you’re tasting fresh apple cider from your favorite orchard. My favorite is the Grapefruit Kombucha. It’s got the same tart bite that takes me back to my childhood summer mornings when I’d sprinkle sugar over a halved grapefruit in my bowl. The Pineapple Jalapeno has a spicy kick at the end of every sweet pineapple note.

BOOCH BY THE

NUMBERS

Will I get carded going to taste kombucha?

Yes, both Urban Farm Kombucha and Root Wild Kombucha require ID to place an order.

An 8-oz. serving of kombucha typically contains 5–15 mg of caffeine, barely noticeable even if you’re extremely sensitive, compared to:.

coffee: 80–110 mg black tea: 45–75 mg green tea: 25–45 mg Kombucha’s alcohol content typically ranges from 1 to 2 percent ABV as the result of natural fermentation.

Mass-market kombucha is often diluted to below 0.5 percent ABV in order to be sold as a non-alcoholic beverage. You’d have to drink 10 servings at this ABV to feel even the buzz of one beer.

Through an extra round of fermentation, “hard” kombucha may contain as much alcohol as beer (around 5 percent ABV) or wine (around 12 percent ABV).

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to avoid all kombucha with any alcohol content.

Ask questions and read the menu!

MIDDAY PICK-ME-UP

Urban Farm Fermentory is a whole world of different drink experiences. The lime-

green building at 200 Anderson Street is surrounded by many of the breweries Portland is famous for: Hi-Fidelity Brewing in back, Lone Pine and Good Fire across the street, and Belleflower around the corner. The background jazz is always just right. The picnic tables call to you; there’s an occasional Mr. Tuna stand in the parking lot if you’re hungry. We overhear a quip from the next table: “I never feel bad about drinking at noon when I’m here,” followed by roaring laughter.

OUTSTANDING OAK

The Turmeric kombucha has the full earthy flavor, with spicy black pepper to activate all the root’s anti-inflammatory properties. Toasted Oak was the standout flavor. It might seem shocking that a drink flavored with wood leads the pack, but it’s stunning coupled with the vanilla playing behind the scenes.

In addition to kombucha, Urban Farm offers “cidah,” beer, gruit (beer brewed with botanicals), mead, vinegars, and jun (a sister drink to kombucha brewed with green tea and honey rather than black tea and sugar). One of the hang-ups about kombucha is the variable alcohol that comes with natural fermentation, which may stop people from being able to enjoy kombucha’s perceived benefits. Because Urban Farm does not dilute their kombucha, it has a higher alcohol content (1.5 percent) than

ROOT TO YOUR HEALING

Ginger root, a popular flavor across kombucha brands, is the additional digestive aid that makes drinking this fermented beverage even more attractive for those who can tolerate it. Urban Farm Fermentory and Root Wild Kombucha both have ginger flavors on their menus. Urban Farm’s is more intense, with the bite of raw ginger (not far from the pickled ginger placed in the corner of your sushi plate) in every sip. More flavor choices: Chaga Chai, Ghost Chili Pepper, Elderberry, and Cranberry.

If you’re touring Portland with your friends this summer, these kombucha spots offer a laid-back atmosphere with drinks that leave you walking home feeling renewed. n

You Can Go Home Again

Not all memories happen on lanes. This lobster pier isn’t near the water or on the water —it’s in the water!

Remember the late 1960s? To mark the successful finish of Camp Wyanoke’s annual whitewater canoe trip, on the way home our minibus pulled up to the coolest summer attraction ever. I was eleven. It was on a secret creek, so I knew even then that I’d never find it again.

Last night I dined at Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier in Kittery Point. This time with my usual date.

We descend the ramp to the long, low lobster pound (a term coined in Maine that now includes dining) looking exactly as I’ve remembered it: tables painted with thick, glossy coats of red, black, green, yellow, and

gray below post-and-beam rafters hung with fishing nets.

When I place my order in the hut with the lurid green lobster tanks inside, the couple ahead of me

Some miracles take a while to reach the ideal temperature. “This place has been in my family since 1902,” Ron Spinney says. “My great-uncle, Herb Witham, a lobsterman, built the pier so more lobster boats could get oil and gas from him and bring their lobster catches here. The floats were on oil drums back then.”

Herb’s son-in-law, George Spinney, added picnic tables when he returned from the

orders a 2.5-pound hard-shell. Something I’d never do. When they leave to go to their table, I watch the lobster wrangler philosophically walk to the tank on the far right and pull out a monster the size of my Scottish terrier.

Hey, this is the 21st century. Who am I to judge?

war—a game-changing modernization. Ron, Spinney’s son, caught lobsters to help out. “I didn’t have a lobster boat. I had a skiff.

“I can’t remember what I was doing in 1965, but in 1967 I was in Massachusetts studying electronics in technical college. I helped build the high level bridge in Portsmouth in 1971. But I’ve loved working here over the years. I’ve shucked oysters, steamed lobsters, you name it. Looking back at all that time—Jeez! Aw, there’ve been so many people here. They’re so great—they remember my name. Who’s my favorite visitor? My wife, Jean, is my favorite celebrity to visit this place. She worked with me for decades here. She was on the Phantom Gourmet show four times. She died

The couple took over Herb Witham’s Lobster Pier “in 1984.” That’s when they gave it the “new” name.

Is it fair to say your lobster pound never changes? It seems like the lobster pound at the end of the universe.

Yes and no. It hasn’t changed too much. Parts of the older building are here, yes, and a huge lobster tank from way back. I have the business listed on the market this summer, you know.

Why on earth? Seems like a nice retirement job to me. You’re where everyone dreams of being. Or is it hard to be on people’s bucket list when you’re holding the bucket.

I’m 76. I live on a nearby island. I want to do more boating.

The question is, how much more boating?

Last year I got a new 29-foot Sea Ray. All last summer I got to use it for two hours.

edge and are glad we’ve done so. Small boats and kayaks, conversationally close to our table, wave as they pass by. We start out with steamers, freshly dug and piping hot. They come with butter and a clam-broth bath, the perfect ritual experience. Our lobster roll is mayonnaise-based with plenty of meat made distinctive with a sprinkle of celery salt and served with ridged chips. Since the food is presented when it’s ready, our pound-and-a-quarter lobster arrives next, stunningly fresh and sweet. The nostalgic onion rings and fries come later, hot from the fryer. Other side dishes include corn, coleslaw, and potato salad. In the 1960s style, you can also purchase additional varieties of chips. Dessert is key lime pie, not too sweet or sour, a citrusy exclamation point to the buttery dinner.

Then I hear a rhythmic banging cracking hammering. Louder and louder! Must be the twoand-a-half pounder.

This return through time is so magical I look at the other tables to see if Bobby Orr has come in again.

the story of Iordana Borila Ceausescu

A story with international impact and a surprise Maine coast connection (Iordana Ceausescu of Romania hid in secret here, fearing for her son's life and safety after the 1989 Romanian Revolution).

A nonfiction novel by a Maine writer nominated for the Booker Prize.

“Here his story follows a mysterious woman in Maine, so out of place he refers to her as ‘a black swallowtail in the snow.’”

This picture-perfect Colonial Revival in Portland’s West End is ready for a new family portrait.

You’ll know you’re home when you find just the right display spots for your heirloom antiques and armorial Chinese export porcelain in the sanctuary known as 11 Fletcher Street, a classic retreat surrounded by parks and gardens. Your next nest was built in the early 1920s, when Colonial Revival meant unquestionably quiet comfort. “You feel the difference the moment you enter the front door,” says

John Hatcher of Keller Williams, comparing this to later versions of the style. Inside, you’re welcomed by a lovely wide foyer leading to a

hallway with coat closet. Here you’ll linger as you greet family and friends with delighted laughter and hugs. The gracious stairway ascends to an upper gallery; all four corner bedrooms open onto this airy space, echoing with countless “Good mornings.”

WHAT A PLACE TO CURATE YOUR LIFE

The spiral on the graceful turned handrail guides your gaze southeast to the fabulous grand salon that beckons with a central fireplace. A French door opens to a covered veranda on the river side of the house. A few steps lead to the enclosed garden and

patio space paved with bricks. A privacy fence encircles the house, a charming buffer from the park and playground next door.

To the left of the stairway, owner DeCourcy “Dick” McIntosh, 80, has fitted the formal dining room with bookcases. “After I went to Exeter in the late 1950s, I went to Harvard, class of 1965, where I majored in English and read a lot in art history.” He’s the former director of the Frick Art and Historical Center in Pittsburgh, now called The Frick Pittsburgh.

We pass through the butler’s pantry with original cabinetry so inviting it ought to be registered as an entertainment space. The honed granite was installed by Kirsten Pulkkinen and her son, the owners from 2015 to 2020. “The butler’s pantry is my favorite place in 11 Fletcher Street,” Pulkkinen says. “We chose the house because of its location, essentially surrounded by Waynflete, where I’d graduated and wanted to share the experience with my son. We put in new wiring, the new kitchen, the tiled bathrooms, the new brick pathways, and the new fences.”

Pulkkinen purchased the house from the estate of the unsinkable Helen Lolly Webber, according to her obituary an interior designer, gourmet cook, and graduate of the Parsons

School of Design. Webber and her husband, a former naval officer, began their grand tour here in 1967.

Pulkkinen says a stranger once stopped her on the street: “‘You live there now? Oh, the martini parties this house has seen!’”

THE TOUR CONTINUES

You pass a door to a small porch as you enter the sunlit kitchen. The back hallway also leads to this galley with plenty of space for a table and chairs, beadboard cabinetry, and stainless-steel appliances including double wall ovens.

Everywhere you look, the details are dreamy down to the doorknobs. The first two levels glow with original hardwood floors, wainscoting, and chair-rail molding. All 3,000 square feet are well considered: there are 3.5 baths, two with walk-in showers, one en suite. No space is overlarge or overdone.

“The green paint in the kitchen is Farrow & Ball, an English paint,” McIntosh says. “It’s also Farrow & Ball paint in the living room. That shade is called Fowler Pink, named for the 20th-century British decorator John Fowler.”

Asked about the Chinese export armorial

china collection adorning the salon, including a matching tureen, he says, “There’s more in the kitchen. It’s from the Eyre family, my maternal grandmother’s family [who settled on the Virginia Eastern Shore in 1623]. The porcelain was ordered in 1800. There are many, many more pieces. Their source is Eyre Hall [dating to 1760], on Cherrystone Creek across Chesapeake Bay [from Yorktown and Gloucester].”

The uniformed figure in the portrait is “my father, [Major] David G. McIntosh. He participated in the Normandy Invasion. He was in the 29th [Infantry] Division of the U.S. Army, an artillery officer. The portrait was painted after he got home, but places him in Jülich on the [Roer River].”

GETTING YOUR BEARINGS

You’re just a few honks from downtown and the Old Port, but also just off Danforth Street for a quick getaway to I-295.

Glimpses of the Fore River sparkle from the second and third floors (the latter could be a perfect family game room or painting studio with its own full bath); at night you can see the cars traveling over Casco Bay Bridge. Two of the bedrooms have views of Danforth Street and the matching set of stone dwellings nicknamed “Teddy’s Teeth.”

Nothing breaks the spell of Colonial Revival here. Well, almost nothing. You probably wouldn’t be allowed to build it now: “There’s a coveted 1961 two-car garage,” Hatcher says.

MY CELL RINGS

On the screen? Pamelia Strayer. What an honor. One of the original occupants and witnesses to the house’s legacy!

“My parents brought me home to 11 Fletcher Street as a newborn,” says Pamelia Deering Strayer, 93. “I lived there until I was 20.”

TimeCapsuleLetter

Dear Metz: My saga follows: Still making mouldings in a (new in 1938) straight-line production deal here in Portland. It is the only such plant in the East. Has been considerably expanded since the war, but I still work less, having a nice comfy crew of assistants arranged in a neat pile that forms a buffer for me against the long hours and the tedium of bringing on coronaries.

I get to California each winter or spring for two months, which is caused by the need to buy lumber there, and we usually find lots of it around La Jolla, Coronado, and Carmel. My two dotters are 20 and 24, the former being a Junior at Skidmore and rapidly on the way to a cold garret room in the line of making the lights on Broadway. The latter has been married four years plus, and we have two grandchildren, one of each brand, two and three years old, and of course the best such in captivity. I put in almost five years in the Navy, winding up as Asst. Navigator on a baby carrier in the not Pacific.

I missed the 25th due to the marriage on that date of a nephew. I shall be on hand, I hope, for all future seances.

Best regards to you, Metz, and cheerio.

land City Council chairman and chairman of the State Highway Commission Philip J. Deering Sr.), was a rising star, already the president of McDonald Lumber Company of Portland in his 20s.

“Yes, my parents had 11 Fletcher built. We had no nickname for it; it was just home.”

SNAPSHOT IN TIME

The 1940 census captures the young family. Philip Jr. and his wife Audrey were both 37 years old. Pamelia, named for her grandmother, was 11; her sister, the late Margeis Deering, was 15. Completing the family was Ida Davoe, a maid, 32.

In June of 1942, when Pamelia was 13 and (a student) at Waynflete, her father wore the smart uniform of a Navy lieutenant during World War II. Assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence (later to serve on a Navy aircraft carrier) Lieutenant Philip J. Deering Jr. interviewed survivors from two Maine fishing trawlers sunk by a German U-boat. He reached the drenched men while they

were recovering at the Coast Guard Station on Mount Desert Rock. Young Deering’s marvelously exacting notes on the submarine and its maneuvers survive. See the composite sketch, likely drawn by Deering, of the Uboat: https://ericwiberg.com/wp-content/ uploads/2021/03/AEOLUS-Survivor-Statements.pdf.

Among Pamelia’s neighbors was the future actress Phyllis Thaxter, who lived around the corner at 314 Danforth Street. “Yes, I knew her. [There’s a devilish pause on the phone.] She was older!”

According to the Portland Press Herald, March 27, 1949, “Miss Pamelia Deering will be home from Skidmore College [for spring break].” Sadly, she’d been back here just weeks earlier for the funeral of her father, the surprise victim of a heart attack on January 30. “He was just 46.

“My favorite place in the house was on the third floor,” Pamelia says. “I lived at 11 Fletcher till I left to marry. I met my future husband on the tennis court: Herbert Payson III.”

Our daily struggle with digital over-stimulation is continuous and real. With emails, pop-up ads, and notifications, we are often in sensory overload. Reading a print publication is a focused experience outside of the digital realm. Printed content has tested better with brand recall than digital, and is easier on the eyes. catch, where they dropped their oars in the water and exploded backwards again.

hen I was a rower, the last part of the race was the hardest. My vision narrowed toward the vanishing point of pain, and I felt myself floating upward and out of the boat with each stroke. We moved, all eight of us, as a single, unthinking animal. Speed was our only destination. We did not think about where our blades sat in relation to the water, but where they were about to be. After we crossed the finish line, we could not hear the small crowd calling for our attention. Not yet. First the rush of water against the shell and the wind blowing against our tingling skin. The honk of a car horn from across town signaled the gust of oxygen rushing to our brains, and there they all were: launches, family and friends, arms swinging in the air as if welcoming us home from a long journey that had finally come to an end. n

“We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last."

The Rower

The reasons for my wandering mind must be a simple matter: an architect recently retired to our town on the coast of Maine and began to row his single shell in the river that parallels the route I take every morning to drink coffee with the other geezers at the Front Street Diner. The first time I noticed him, I pulled off the road and watched him just long enough to determine that he’d had coaching at some point in his life.

My father was also a rower, at a boys’ boarding school in Massachusetts and later as part of the famous 1938 Harvard heavyweight crew. When I was fourteen, I was shipped off to the same school, where I rowed lightweight in the three seat and later in the four seat at Harvard. Having dodged

Vietnam by applying to graduate school and rushing into marriage and kids, I found myself back at my father’s school as an instructor in English and the coach of the crew. Once I was there, I never really thought of doing anything else until I retired, and my wife Sarah and I moved back to the house in Maine that my parents built when I was young. After Sarah died five years later, my bachelor son said I could join him in California, a place, I told him, that will never, even in the best of times, have enough water.

My life has been straight forward and, in the larger scheme of things, of little conse-

quence. I have no interest in pursuing any evidence to the contrary, but there are moments, especially on my morning drives along the river, when I feel the echo of a shadow life out there on the water. A life I might’ve had, a parallel life that I am still living?

Before racing in six consecutive Oxford–Cambridge regattas, the famous oarsman Boris Rankov would beat the boathouse with his fists as he screamed, “This is the worst day of my life!” He would wail and holler into the open air. After the race he would stay in bed for six days and claim that he could not focus his eyes for five.

I told the boys at school: let each muscle serve its function while relaxing the shoulders and keeping a loose grip on the oar. When their blades dropped in the water, they pulled with such ferocity that their teeth bared and eyes squeezed shut. Each time they finished pulling, their bodies fell gently forward to the
