The late abstractions are Jon Imber’s full-throated affirmation of his being as an artist—about leaving a mark. His sure and gentle touch in the formative subject of his paintings, along with an exquisite sense of line and color that is seemingly born of Maine and, one imagines, of his memories growing up on the South shore of Long Island near Jones Beach where Brooklyn and Manhattan multitudes flocked during the summer months to escape New York heat waves. The jostling forms against the airy ground are a Billy Joel or Harry Chapin ballad of melodic, visual harmonies. Eagle-eyed Maine fans of ’22 Billboard-topper Harry Styles spotted that “Grapejuice,” “As It Was,” “Cinema,” and “Love of My Life” on Harry’s House were all recorded at Highmoor Farm. Though agriculture professor Tori Lee Jackson denies there’s a recording studio at the University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension at Highmoor Farm in Monmouth, one of Styles’s co-songwriters was Windham native Amy Allen, who cowrote his triple platinum Adore You too. Coincidence?

The Alewives Are Coming!

In the 1820s, mapmaker Moses Greenleaf coined the name Ore Mountain for the surface limonite gossan that the First Mainers used as an ingredient for decorative paint. e elevated ore deposits were ve miles east of the four-mile natural gorge. By 1843, the ore was deemed ideal for industry, with the forests here the perfect source of charcoal. Katahdin Iron Works was created as a blast furnace driven by blowers powered by the river. Sixteen stone kilns heated ore to create pig iron and wrought iron. Business picked up during the Civil War David Pingree and his Boston partners ramped up the operation by upgrading the bunkhouse into the Silver Lake Hotel, a tourist trap. And just like that—the Bangor and Katahdin Iron Works Railway brought the world here. In time the Iron Works was cranking out cruiser engines for what would become the United States Navy’s Great White Fleet

e good news is, University of Maine Cumberland Extension educator Kathy Savoie spotted some beach plums right here in town on a walk on Back Cove Trail and embarked on a successful foraging expedition with colleague Kate McCarty to make beach plum jelly in the kitchen classroom at the UMaine Regional Learning Center in Falmouth

When foraging in an urban environment, McCarty says it’s important “to make sure you’re picking in an area that hasn’t been a ected by environmental contaminants like road salt or exhaust, and to wash the fruit well before you begin to prepare the recipe.”

“We haven’t carried wild beach plum jam for at least eight years,” says Maine Maple Products manager Eric Ellis. “Our manufacturer couldn’t get hold of enough beach plums to ful ll our order. Even in the time that we were distributing it, our supply of plums was coming from Cape Cod. at’s about the only area where you’ll nd them plentiful.”

“ e best time to pick beach plums in Maine is August to September,” McCarty says. “You tell when they're ripe based on the color. Depending on the variety, they're either reddish or plum-colored, not green.”

Visitors cite going to a local brewery is their No. 2 activity.

For nearly three decades, this area has been a magnet for beer seekers visiting Allagash and the cluster of other breweries that now ourish around it. Several have moved on—most notably Bissell Brothers, to ompson’s Point—but most remain: Foundation Brewing Company, De nitive Brewing Company, Battery Steele Brewing, and Austin Street Brewery are all worthy stops on an Industrial Way brewery tour.

While staying true to its Belgian roots, Allagash brews such an array of lambics, sours, wheat beers, wild ales, and more that locavore tipplers advise visitors to the tasting room to try anything and everything but the White available nationwide. On a recent visit, we tasted the Allagash Tripel (9% ABV), a strong golden ale that has hints of honey, banana, and passion fruit amongst the hops. We also enjoyed a North Sky (7.5% ABV), a Belgian-inspired stout that’s light and sweet, mildly chocolatey, and darkly fruity with a silky mouthfeel.

outdoor theater seating 2,500, a boathouse, a croquet eld, a petting zoo, a trout pond, and a deer run. With the rise of the automobile, it morphed into an amusement park and eventually closed as a casualty of the Great Depression. Today the park is supported by the Friends of Riverton Trolley Park and Portland Trails, with sponsorship from Adopt-a-Trail partner Allagash Brewing Company.

But in the beginning there were a lot more doubts and a lot less beer. Tod launched Allagash in the corner of a warehouse on Industrial Way in 1995, brewing only Allagash White (5.2% ABV), a classic Belgian-style witbier brewed with coriander and orange peel. It’s both sweet and sour, refreshing and drinkable, but it didn’t look or taste anything like what most American beer drinkers were used to. Nevertheless, Tod persisted.

“In 1995 there were quite a few Englishstyle beers and pale ales around, and [founder] Rob [Tod] didn't see the point in brewing a beer that quite a few other people were already brewing,” says Brett Willis of Allagash. “So he started brewing a Belgian-styleAllagashwitbier.”hascome a long way since then. Although the Portland peninsula boasts many breweries and tasting rooms, the headwaters of cra brewing in Maine lie northwest of the city center. “Visitors cite food and beverage as their No. 1 reason to visit Maine,” says Willis. “Going to a local brewery is their No. 2 activity.” If nature and beer are now the two most recognizable pieces of Maine’s ever-popular and ever-growing brand, both Allagashes have played a major role in that development.

Now, that’s amore.

Its northernmost location at 27 Western Avenue is as beautiful and tragic as an Italian opera. e ghosts of Café Topher, Grissini Trattoria & Pani cio, Abbondante Trattoria and Bar, and Rebecca Charles’s Pearl Kennebunk & Spat Oyster Cellar still whisper their lost menus to us.

WAY OF WISDOM

ia Sophia by the Sea has opened in Kennebunk ’s Lower Village. Its sister restaurant in Washington, D.C. just won Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence. But why have the swells landed here?

We’re nestled outside, embraced by the fragrance of a miniature lemon tree’s delicate owers. Everything and everybody seems new, including our charming server, who’s from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and

We start with a glass of red blend ($13) and the cocktail Sophisticata (limoncello, gin, Salers, Cocchi Americano, orange bitters, $15), in honor of our citrus table companion. Just days into the launch, it’s lovely here under the strings of lights as the moon rises, the vibe exciting though uneven. We thoroughly enjoy the Caprese (heirloom tomatoes, a glistening orb of fresh mozzarella, pesto, $18) in a de ly curved lunar crescent on the edge of a generous white plate, but what really knocks us out are the Fried Squash Blossoms (prosciutto, fontina, romesco, $18). Gorgeous to the eye, lighter than air, with the most delicate tasty crunch, they call us to return for themselves alone. It’s like sampling a work of art.

We choose the tangy Sword ($39), and its background of olives, fregula, fava beans, and pepperonata absolutely satis es and transports us to Italy. e Lobster Agnolotti is another straight-up winner from executive chef (and native Mainer) Luke Sibley. JULY/AUGUST 2022 75 FESTIVALS

Last year we partnered with Portland Stage for a concert that combined the music of Bach with historical works from the likes of Socrates, Gandhi, and Maya Angelou. It was a powerful re-interpretation of the vid eo we did in the summer of 2020 with Jus tice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Amanda Gor man, Senator Angus King, Richard Blan co, and others.

INTERVIEW BY LILY RANDALL

What keeps bringing you back to Maine?

Why did you choose Portland as the home for the Bach Virtuosi Festival?

I co-founded the Bowdoin International Music Festival in 1964 and guided it for 50 years. A er stepping down as Director in 2014, I grew restless. I wanted to devote my self to Bach Portland is a vibrant and grow ing community where the audiences are out standing and appreciative. I felt the festival and Portland were a good match.

What’s your favorite work of Bach’s to play? To conduct? To listen to? Why?

It wouldn’t be summer in Maine without lobster, lighthouses, beaches…and Bach!

Our daily struggle with digital over-stimulation is continuous and real. With emails, pop-up ads, and notifications, we are often in sensory overload. We ended up losing the game, but that was all right. I’ll be back.

It worked. I swung at the rst pitch and hit a little blooper too deep for the shortstop to reach and too shallow for the le elder, the ball miraculously dropping in the grass exactly between them. “Run!” everyone shouted, and I dropped the bat and hurried down to rst base, arriving just in time.
