We are very pleased to offer you an array of programs that seek to illuminate, enlighten, and educate, including the inspiring and multi-talented Mandy Harvey, Ranky Tanky, longtime favorites The Chieftains, and Who I Am: Celebrating Me, which speaks to what we should be doing here in Portland during Black History Month.

Our National Geographic Live lecture series will continue to support our educational programming, transporting patrons of all ages through time and around the world, featuring such luminaries as Cristina Mittermeier, Nizar Ibrahim, and Florian Schulz.

INTO THE ARCTIC KINGDOM Florian Schulz Photographer His multi-year quest to document the Arctic took photographer Florian Schulz to the ends of the Earth. He camped for weeks in jarring winter conditions, accompanied traditional Inuit hunters and sailed the arctic waters, all to get an intimate look at life in the Arctic. There, he tracked families of polar bears, followed the vast caribou herds, and captured the Northern Lights in stunning detail. Through breathtaking imagery, Schulz takes audiences on a legendary journey into the Arctic kingdom—with a special focus on the Arctic Refuge, one of the world’s last great wilderness.

SPINOSAURUS: LOST GIANT OF THE CRETACEOUS Nizar Ibrahim Paleontologist Meet Spinosaurus, the largest predatory dinosaur yet discovered —larger than T. rex—and hear the incredible story of how it was almost lost to science, before being brought back withh the help of paleontologist Nizar Ibrahim.

With amazing video recreating the world of the Cretaceousera Sahara, Ibrahim will tell the story of Spinosaurus’ discovery, loss, and rediscovery, and explain what—other than its size—makes this ancient monster unique.

She learned the concept of responsible earth stewardship from her indigenous nanny as a child growing up in Mexico, and she explores that calling through the ways of life of four communities and their individual relationships with water— the Kayapó in the Amazon, the Inuit of Greenland, the First Nations people of British Columbia, and native Hawaiians.

Silkroad Ensemble Monday, February 4 7:30pm

The Silkroad Ensemble creates music that engages difference, sparking radical cultural collaboration and passion-driven learning to build a more hopeful world. Founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the group has been called “vibrant and virtuosic” by the Wall Street Journal, “one of the 21st century’s great ensembles” by the Vancouver Sun, and a “roving musical laboratory without walls” by the Boston Globe.

Silkroad musicians and composers hail from more than 20 countries, drawing on a rich tapestry of traditions to create a new musical language — a uniquely engaging and accessible encounter between the foreign and the familiar that reflects our manylayered contemporary identities. From soul-encompassing singing and dancing to heartfelt poetry and prose, the production takes you on a cultural journey highlighting a montage of African-American figures and movements.

Formed in 2007 by Shalanda Sims in response to the lack of celebratory events in Portland during Black History month, Who I Am: Celebrating Me dared to fill a void. In an effort to educate youth, show them something they could be proud of, and celebrate all year long, educators, business owners, youth, adults, senior citizens, artists, community members gathered to sing songs, recite poetry, and share oral history. Who I Am: Celebrating Me has helped educate thousands of audience members about the rich history and contributions of African-Americans.

Ranky Tanky

“Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God.” “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It,” or “Get Funky!” In this spirit this Charleston, SC based quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston.

The soulful songs of the Gullah culture are brought to life by this band of native South Carolinians who mix low country traditions with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk, and rhythm and blues. Quentin Baxter, Kevin Hamilton, Charlton Singleton and Clay Ross came together in 1998 to form a Charleston jazz quartet. They have reunited, adding celebrated low country vocalist Quiana Parler to revive a “Heartland of American Music” born in their own backyards.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical The Greek gods are real, and they’re ruining Percy Jackson’s life.

Percy Jackson, a teenager with attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder and dyslexia, has been kicked out schools his entire life for reasons uncontrolled by him. CALLING ALL ARTS ENTHUSIASTS: WE NEED YOU!

For more than 30 years, the volunteers at Portland’5 Centers for the Arts have served as a critical, vital presence for all of our venues, ushering patrons, taking tickets and ensuring that our guests are safe and comfortable. They are the first friendly faces you see when you visit our venues, and the last when you leave us.

Volunteers are active in the Portland’5 community engagement efforts and assist in the efforts of the Portland’5 Foundation. For over 20 years, the volunteers of Portland’5 have collected teddy bears and other stuffed animals in support of the Clackamas County Victims Assistance program. Volunteers lead visitors and members of the community on free tours of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and the theatres in the Antoinette Hatfield Hall.

Our volunteers are caring members of the Portland Metro community and share the desire to widen the access to the performing arts. The volunteer program at Portland’5 is filled with people who share their life and business experiences, fluency in other languages, and their love of live theatre. All training is provided including customer service procedures, ushering skills, ticket reading, safety and evacuation drills. A volunteer application and background check are required.

MUSIC ON MAIN

Celebrate summer at the 14th Annual Music on Main.

This free outdoor concert series features popular local and national bands. Kick back and relax in the sun with dinner and drinks from the ArtBar & Bistro, or grab a partner and hit the dance floor. Either way you choose, Music on Main promises to be a great way to spend a breezy summer night in downtown Portland!

GINA CHAVEZ

Taking the stage at this year’s Music on Main is Austin singer-songwriter Gina Chavez. Gina first found her voice as a Latin folk chanteuse during a year abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her warm, bold, rich voice transports with songs of longing, faith, beauty, and sacrifice. With an intermingling of English and Spanish, Chavez’s music offers a distinct

weave of cumbia, bossa nova, vintage pop, indie folk, and reggaeton. Described by NPR as possessing a voice that will ‘stop you in your tracks,’ 10-time Austin Music Award winner Chavez made the station’s Tiny Desk Concert of 2015 and was hailed by the Austin Monthly as ‘a breath of fresh air.’ Her music is sure to enchant, delight, and get folks kicking up their heels!

SUMMER ARTS ON MAIN Wednesdays, July 10–August 28 11:00am–1:00pm Since 2004, this event has evolved into a rite of summer for Portlanders, offering free music, exciting performances, and children’s activities along Main Street between the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and Antoinette Hatfield Hall. Adjacent to the Portland Farmers Market on the South Park Blocks, Summer Arts on Main is the perfect afternoon family experience.

to a diverse selection of world-class lectures and performing arts. We offer free performances in our venues and in the community, career shadow opportunities, summer internships, and curriculum support.

Our Education Program intentionally seeks and supports teachers and students in Title I schools.

Focusing on Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties, our programs enhance the education and arts experience by providing curricular materials that connect what students see on the stage with what they experience in the classroom. In our inaugural 2015-2016 season the Portland’5 Education Program served over 6,000 students and staff from Multnomah county schools. In our 2017-2018 season, we served over 14,000 students and staff.

Lack of arts education opportunities disproportionately affects students and families from communities of color and low-income households. Many attend schools that do not provide comprehensive arts programming, if any at all. Additional barriers to the arts include limited access to transportation, lack of expendable time, lack of disposable income, little or no exposure to the arts, and a misperception that the arts are exclusive. There is no charge to any school, student, or family to attend an Education Program event.
